PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dan Bouet
March is a busy month for the club! Our volunteers are in full swing, keeping the events calendar packed. A special focus this month is on our New Members Day event at We-Ko-Pa Casino. This is a great opportunity to meet and greet new members, learn more about the club, and get to know the people behind the efforts. We will also be giving away about $1,000 worth of MSR credits towards activities of one’s choice.
The club is fortunate to have some new enthusiasm from our female members, some of whom have taken the initiative to host ladies-only events. So far, there have been driving tours and social gatherings specifically for this demographic. If you’re interested, check the calendar to see if there’s an event that appeals to you. Jill Wilkerson, Debbie Younger, Rita Sprenkle, and Jeanne Snyder-Baker are the gals that have spearheaded these events so far.
Speaking of event planning, our Social Chair position is currently vacant. Deb Rettew served as our Social Chair for the second half of 2024 and helped plan the Concours and Holiday Party during that time. We appreciate her efforts and the time she dedicated to the club.
Historically, the Social Chair has been responsible for organizing the Holiday Party, Baseball Night Out, and co-organizing New Members Day with the Membership Chairperson, along with other major social events as opportunities arise (such as the 65th Anniversary Party). Considering that members have varying interests in different activities, the club is looking for individuals willing to help event plan one or more of these social events. Additionally, we are seeking a Social Chair to oversee these planning efforts along with other club-hosted social events. If you’re interested in helping plan one of these social events or taking on the Social Chair role, please reach out to me!
Finally, our Board of Directors has approved a Member Appreciation Night, organized by Jim and Carole Bultema. Stay tuned for more details, but it is scheduled for June 30. Best of all, this event will be completely free for our members and will feature both entertainment, food, and socializing opportunities.
Hope to see you at a future event!
Dan Bouet
From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull
As the warmer weather descends upon us, we can look forward to a transition within the Club. The snowbirds begin to contemplate their journey to cooler climates and the diehard locals start to think of driving tours that take them to cooler climates just for the day or weekend.
One thing that both groups of people have to look forward to is the annual New Members’ Day and Dennis’s All Porsche Grand Display up in Carefree, both events are well worth attending.
The New Members’ Day allows new members to AZPCA the ability to meet the Board and all the hard-working individuals that make this great club tick.
The 3rd annual All Porsche Grand display organized by Dennis Rood and supported by all his eager minions is a truly spectacular event and well worth the drive to Carefree.
March also welcomes the MLB Spring training games to the Valley, it gives people a chance to go and watch their favorite Baseball Team right here in Arizona.
Club members can look forward to a host of different activities from the aforementioned New Members’ Day and All Porsche Display along with a driving tour to Lake Roosevelt, the monthly meeting at the Persian Room, Autocross at the AMP Skidpad, a New Members’ drive to Cave Creek, Porsches n’ Pancakes will be held at Harrold’s Cave Creek Corral, we have a overnight driving adventure to Tucson Desert Museum and finally the HPDE gang will be at AMP.
We have a full calendar for April too, make sure to check out Going Places and our AZPCA website for all the details on upcoming events.
If you know someone that doesn’t have a Porsche yet but is very interested in seeing what it’s all about tell them to sign up for the PCA “Test Drive” program (https://www.pca.org/pca-test-drive) or better still ask them to join you as a guest at an upcoming AZPCA event.
Stay safe and hopefully we’ll see you at an upcoming event soon. Cheers,
Gregg & Ali

AZPCA Regional eNEWS
AZPCA REGION eNEWS
AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.
It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.
AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. If you are not receiving any of the emails that are labeled with the above banner, and prefer to receive them, please email the Region’s Communications Chair, Kenny Mitchell at kenmitchell-director@az.pca.org
Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Pat McNamara
1. When did you join PCA?
I joined in late 2024 as I was looking for a 997.2.
2. What Porsche(s) do you have
2009 Carrera 4S Coupe w/ PDK and Sport Chrono in Basalt black with standard black leather
3. Where are you from?
LaCrosse, WI but have lived in AZ for over 20 years
4. Family?
Wife, Joy, who plays her saxophone with various bands around town. No kids but currently have an Irish Setter and 4 cats. Have a nephew who lives in town and I hope to bring him to some events.
5. Work background or trade?
Data Engineering manager for a company that makes SSDs, called Solidigm
6. What makes your car special?
The car I found had 3 previous PCA owners and had great documentation so I know the car’s history.
7. Next upgrade?
The car came with an IPD Plenum and Eibach springs. I was missing PSE, so I added an exhaust by IDE, Only other upgrade I’m planning is switching to a sport steering wheel with paddles instead of the PDK buttons.
8. Have you personalized your car?
It has some custom Fuchs and planning to put on a “Carrera” side decal.
9. Favorite memory with a car?
Haven’t had it very long but picking up in Vegas and driving back early in the morning past Lake Mead was a great first time experience.
10. Where/Why did you buy your Porsche?
Since I was kid I have dreamed of owning a 911. I was drawn to the 997.2 because it was relatively affordable, and for me, is the sweet spot between old and new.
11. High school nickname?
They would call me by my lastname.
12. Top 3 cars you would own?
Tough question. If I could only own 3 cars, I’m pretty happy with my current cars but would go for extreme editions. If I could add 3 additional it would probably be cars from my past because of the memories associated with them.
1. 997.2 Sport Classic
2. Lucid Air Sapphire
3. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392

La Posada, “the resting place,” was one of the finest hotels ever built in the Southwest when it opened in 1930. And this historic hotel on Route 66 is still charming after all this time. Rooms have been restored carefully, and many pieces of the Mary Colter design remain, along with extensive artwork and gardens throughout the property. There is also a large trading post on site full of southwest treasures. Visit https://laposada.org for more info.
After settling in, we will gather for an extended informal Happy Hour, then enjoy dinner at the famous and beautiful Turquoise Room for southwest contemporary cuisine. https://theturquoiseroom.com
On Sunday, we will gather at the legendary landmark, Standin’ on the Corner Park, for a group photo. The park has captured the hearts and imaginations of music lovers and road-trippers alike along Route 66. Made famous by the Eagles’ hit song, it is a must-see!
You may wish to explore downtown Winslow and other Route 66 locations before heading home on your own Event Organizer: Geneva Sorum, GSorum@hotmail.com

Article - A nice chance encounter of a Porsche kind
Eine nette Zufallsbegegnung à la Porsche
(A nice chance encounter of a Porsche kind)
I received an email from Christian and Ortrun, friends from Germany, stating they’ll be in Scottsdale the weekend of January 25, 2025. They asked if I’d be available to meet for a “Porsche Drive” … Naturally, the answer was yes! We agreed on an easy drive up the Apache Trail past Canyon Lake to Tortilla Flat on Sunday January 26th.
Christian and Ortrun are from Leipzig German and are very enthusiastic Porsche drivers. They shipped both of their Porsches from Germany for their drives in the USA.
Christian and Ortrun had purchased a previously owned US-spec 1989 Porsch 911 Turbo (930) in Germany and decided to have it restored by the Porsche Classic shop in Zuffenhausen. After a lengthy review of the available colors in Porsche’s inventory, they chose paint code 39A, Amazon Green. That is the same color as my 1993 928 GTS. We agreed on our mutual admiration of the color.
From the left to right: Rich, Ortrun and Christian
Christian drove his black Porsche 911 type 997.1 Turbo.
Rook and Debbie drove their beautiful Boxster Spyder
It is prettier than the day it first left the factory in 1989
This 911 Porsch Turbo has been repainted and completely refurbished by Porche Classic “Sonderwunsch” [Special Wish] service at the Zuffenhausen Porsche factory.
What a beautiful restoration of Ortrun’s 911
Once we all kicked the tires in the parking lot we drove on toward Tortilla Flat. The Superstition Mountains loom to the east.
What a great look at Porsche’s offerings
From left to right: Rook, Christian, Ortrun, Betsy and Rich
From left to right: Christian, Rook, Ortrun, Betsy and Debbie
We all shared a day of fantastic Porsche fellowship!
Background of my chance meetings with Christian and Ortrun, beginning in 2021
Back in May of 2021 the Arizona Region Porsche Club of America hosted a nationwide Treffen. I volunteered to lead a group drive to Sedona and drove my red 1979 928. There I met Christian and Ortrun, a German couple who each drive their own Porsches (shipped from Germany) to PCA driving events.
This is Christian (lower left) and Ortrun (upper right) taking photos at Cordes Junction, Arizona.
The red car is my 1979 928 that was leading a group, Christian’s Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the blue one and Ortrun’s 911 GT3 RS is the white one. Christian stated they were taking photos of RED, White and Blue Porsches … the colors in the US Flag. Christian, Ortrun and I shared a table at lunch where I learned more of their Porsche passion.
As we entered Sedona I was treated to this rear view from my 1979 Porsche 928 of Ortrun driving her 911 GT3 RS.
We next met Christian and Ortrun at the nationwide June 2023 Porsche Club of America Parade.
Christian’s car was autographed by Porsche racing legend Walter Röhrl https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Röhrl
Christian had a different 911 at this event, a nice green Porsch Exclusive built 911 Speedster
I was invited to display my Amazon Green 1993 928 GTS in the same Parade Historic group as Christian.
I met Ortrun at the display and learned that prior to seeing my GTS, she had picked Amazon Green as the color of her 1989 911 Turbo (930) that was going to the Porsche Classic restoration shop for a rebuild.
Just three months later, I heard the roar of Porsche engines at our hotel in Monterey, and found that Christian and Ortrun had picked the same hotel that we were staying at for the 2023 Rennsport Reunion VII.
Note that these are German registered cars with their German license plates, this is Ortrun’s 911 GT3 RS
This is Christians 911 Speedster. It was a featured display at the Rennsport Reunion VII.
So as not to show favoritism to my 928 family, on this trip I drove my 1987 928 S4.

Ladies Only Drive to Fountain Hills
Article - Ladies Only Drive to Fountain Hills
This was the second drive that Debbie Younger planned for the ladies. I missed the first one but made sure to go on this drive.
We couldn’t have asked for a better day! The sun was shining and it was warm enough to put the Boxster top down. Just love riding with the top down.
On Saturday morning, 2/15, the ladies met up at Talking Stick Pavilion in Scottsdale. There were 20 beautiful Porsches with 27 attendees. As people signed in, Christina McIlvain handed out custom made t-shirts to each of us. Thank you, Christina, for the special shirts. Debbie rounded us up around 9:30 am for the drivers meeting to review all the particulars. We manned our Porsches and we were off on our ride around 10 am. Christina was the lead driver along with Debbie as her navigator (there’s another story behind this) for the first group, Geneva Sorum was the lead driver for the second group with Carole Bultema as her navigator. The sweep for group 1 was Abby Ercoline and group 2 sweep was Judith Hensel. I was very fortunate to have Susan Beer ride with me as my navigator. She was a great navigator and we didn’t miss any turns. It was fun having her with me for the drive.
Our drive took us around Thompson Peak Parkway, Rio and Tonto Verde communities and through Fountain Hills.
The best part of the drive was to Adero Canyon Trailhead in Fountain Hills. This development was something special to see.
After that, we headed to Vincino’s Italian restaurant in Scottsdale for lunch on the patio. The food was great but, the comradery was fantastic!
For a change, all I can say is it was so much fun being the driver instead of the navigator!

AZPCA Ladies Only - Cooking Class and Lunch
About the Chef: Andrew Schmidt (Executive Chef)
Chef Andrew is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with over 10 years of handson kitchen experience, making him the perfect candidate to lead our Porsche Club lunch. Chef Drew has an extensive background in plant-based/seasonal menus, refined and rustic cooking techniques, as well as classical French and Italian culinary training. His passion for, and education of, food history/traditional cultural recipes has opened the door for a deeper understanding and appreciation of recipes, covering not just how we cook great food, but rather why we cook it in a certain, special way. In his own words, “I aspire to share the stories and artisanal crafts that illustrate how food and drink is an eternal bond between us all.”
On Saturday, February 8, 2025, the Arizona Region of the Porsche Club of America embarked on an exhilarating driving tour known as the Maricopa and West Valley Loop. This meticulously planned 150-mile journey offered participants a blend of scenic landscapes, historical landmarks, and camaraderie among Porsche enthusiasts.
Morning Assembly at Porsche Chandler
The day commenced at 8:00 AM sharp at the Porsche Chandler dealership. Members gathered amidst a fleet of pristine Porsches, ranging from classic 911s, Caymans, and Boxsters to the latest Taycans. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as participants exchanged greetings and admired each other's vehicles. After a brief driver's meeting outlining the day's itinerary and safety protocols, the convoy was ready to set off.
Journey to Maricopa
Departing from Chandler, the group headed west along AZ-202 before turning south onto AZ-347 towards the city of Maricopa. This stretch of road, flanked by expansive desert vistas and distant mountain ranges, provided an ideal setting for drivers to appreciate the performance and handling of their Porsches. The early morning sun cast a golden hue over the landscape, enhancing the visual splendor of the drive.
Scenic Route to Gila Bend
Continuing west on AZ-238, the convoy made its way to Gila Bend for the first scheduled break. This quaint town, known for its rich history and unique roadside attractions, offered participants a chance to refuel both their vehicles and themselves. Local cafes served as perfect pit stops, where members could grab a coffee and share their driving experiences thus far.
Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge
One of the highlights of the tour was the drive over the Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge. Constructed in the 1920s, this steel truss bridge was once the longest of its kind in Arizona. Spanning the Gila River, the bridge stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering and offers panoramic views of the surrounding desert. As the Porsches traversed the bridge, the juxtaposition of modern automotive engineering against the backdrop of historical infrastructure was a sight to behold.
Driving Tour Review - West Valley Drive
The next leg of the journey took the group north along Old US Hwy 80, passing by vast stretches of farmland and impressive solar power installations. The route brought an unexpected road closure but the group would be undeterred. After a short break the group took a detour that led to the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the largest power producer in the United States. While access to the facility is restricted, the group paused nearby for a photo opportunity, capturing the impressive facility in the background. The juxtaposition of cutting-edge energy production and the timeless elegance of the Porsches made for a memorable snapshot.
As midday approached, appetites grew, and the convoy made its way east on I-10 to Rudy's "Country Store" and Bar-B-Q. Known for its authentic Texas-style barbecue, Rudy's offered a delectable array of smoked meats and classic sides. The rustic ambiance of the establishment provided a relaxed setting for members to unwind, share stories from the drive, and deepen their connections over a hearty meal.
Reflecting on the Experience
The Maricopa and West Valley Loop was more than just a drive; it was a celebration of the Porsche community's passion for performance, history, and fellowship. Traversing diverse landscapes, from desert expanses to historical bridges, participants were reminded of Arizona's rich tapestry of natural beauty and cultural landmarks.
For many, the highlight was not just the destinations, but the journey itself the thrill of driving their Porsches on open roads, the shared enthusiasm of fellow members, and the discovery of new locales. Events like these underscore the essence of the Porsche Club of America: fostering connections among enthusiasts and creating lasting memories through shared experiences.

Danielle’s Column - Gen AI and You, and Me
STORY BY DANIELLE BADLER
Among the long list of valuable benefits I garner for writing these missives is the ability to be on the release/announcement e-mailing list from Porsche AG. Of course, most of what I get are musings about a tiddledywinks sponsorship or underwriting a pet hotel in Stuttgart, for when you and your SO take your Boxster to the Alps, and you have no room for Rover
But, sometimes, actual interesting documents do slip into the feed. Real interesting documents. Like the one I got a few days ago, listing an evolution roadmap for the incorporation of generative AI in Porsche cars, over the next little while.
Yeah, I know, somebody goofed, big time. And will probably be reprimanded, in real time. We’re not supposed to see this stuff until it’s ready for prime time. Well, it’s time to say too bad, I say. Your humble servant is here to serve… and share what’s just around the silicon corner, in future time! Get ready because, from Porsche’s mouth to mine to yours, it’s time to dream. Here we go.
Sensory Enveloping.
You know how it is when you look out the window. You see … whatever it is you see. Be it, these days, traffic, traffic or more traffic. Especially in urban/suburban areas, where most of us live. Well, with “Sensory Enveloping,” trademark apparently pending, you can “surround” yourself and your car with the vision you’d like to have.
Here's how it will work. You’ll preset the infotainment system with, along with your audio choices, vistas you’d like to see the Pacific Coast Highway, in Big Sur. Or the Robert Moses Causeway, leading to Fire Island. Or the Million Dollar Highway, leaving Durango. Or the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Montana. Or the Tail of the Dragon. And … click on your choice of heavenly runs and … that’s what you’ll see outside your windows! As easy as that. With the actual view out the window stitched seamlessly to your vista.
Sing, Sing, Sing C’mon. We all do it. We sing along with the tunes on the audio system. Of course we do Because, unlike our favorite Karaoke bar, nobody’s listening. Nobody’s there to kibitz, to throw things at us, to tell us to sit back down.
Now, imagine if your rendition could “magically” be added to the tune that’s playing. Harmoniously. And your dulcet tones are perfectly incorporated into the tune. That’s the beauty of Sing, Sing, Sing.
Sorry, no musical instruments are allowed in the first gen. And possibly ever. Or at least until Porsche makes a minivan, which may indeed be never. It’s a space issue. How do you play your clavier when you’re behind the wheel? It’s just not safe.
I am told there will be a surcharge for use of “autotune” on your harmonies. A fee that may be a necessary expense.
Danielle’s Column - Gen AI and You, and Me
Think and Go
Where do you want to go today? Fugetaboutit! Here’s the solution. With Think and Go, you simply clip one of those clothes-pin thingies on a finger and … shazam, the car knows where you want to go, and how to get there! With all your preferences, like left lane domination, or lightlytraveled two-lanes, or lightly patrolled twisties, all programmed in. It’s just that simple.
Plus, the app will calculate time/distance/fuel consumption/rest areas/dining options … automatically! It will access your Open Table patterns, your driving tendencies, how long you can go without taking a bio break. Instantaneously. No more flashes of “are you tired, do you want to take a break?” on your dash. Oh no, it knows … all. Including when the bathrooms were last cleaned!
Virtual Driving
Ok, here’s my favorite. If you’re like me, you like to drive, just for the sake of the experience. But, as the planet fills with more and more people, as traffic builds, as sea levels rise, the world over, the joy of driving gets more and more problematic.
No more. Welcome to Virtual Driving. That’s right. Think the best driving simulator extant … and then think beyond, way beyond, to a transformative experience. Think virtual reality on steroids. With no clunky visor/headband/helmet/what do you call those things? Oh no. Just climb into your daily ride, press a button, and off you go. You’ll be able to shift, to steer, to feel the bumps, g-loads, everything that makes a seat of the pants experience what it is.
Only you won’t actually go anywhere! No fuel consumption, no electric consumption, no wear and tear, no mileage, no accidents, no jacked-up insurance premiums. Just … behind the wheel pleasure. Just the joy of driving, made possible by 0s and 1s and Porsche silicon. And I understand they’re planning a drift mode!
Does it sound like it’s time to embrace the AI-enhanced automotive future? It does to me. Watch this space for updates on timetables for rollouts. I’m sure they’ll be forthcoming, in my feed, any day now.

AZPCA Ladies-only Cave Creek Field Trip – Tour and Lunch
On February 13, 10 members took a field trip to Cave Creek. First stop was ROC2 (Roastery of Cave Creek) followed by a fun lunch at The Grotto Cafe.
ROC2 is a very small coffee roastery located at 7003 E. Cave Creek Rd. Roasting in the Valley since 1997, ROC2 provides Arizona residents, retailers, restaurants and resorts with some of the best fresh and local coffee.
Jared, the ROC2 operations manager, led an educational session on everything you never knew about organic coffee; like all the steps it takes so a coffee lover can have the perfect cup of coffee; from sourcing, storing, roasting, cooling, bagging and delivery.
ROC2 travels the globe in search of the finest organic coffees from the four major growing regions - Central America, South America, Africa and Indonesia with sourcing from a number of Fair Trade and Direct Trade partners
We witnessed state-of-the-art roasting, cooling, and bagging equipment in action.
On our tour, we sampled perfect Black and Tan medium roast hot coffee. ROC2 uses special techniques so not to under roast or over roast; they find the sweet spot where the nuanced flavor profiles of each coffee are revealed. We also we lucky to sample a cold brew nitro coffee. This was a first for all of us.
A few fun facts from our members:
“A lighter roast has MORE caffeine than the darker roasts. Also, there are so few specialty roasters and lucky us we have ROC2 in local Cave Creek”. Audre Kleven
“This was a fascinating tour of ROC2 followed by a delightful lunch at The Grotto. I was thoroughly educated by our guide, Jared, but I was most surprised to know how much metal and other debris is found and extracted when the beans get into the roaster. Their prices are quite reasonable for such specialty coffee. I am planning to bring other friends there when they visit us”. Jeanne Snyder
“Darker roast didn’t mean stronger coffee. Actually, it was smoother and less acidic. Light roast is more acidic” Jill Wilkerson
ROC2 is open Monday through Friday and sells coffee beans to walk-in customers. They also have an outside honor-system rack where you can pick up coffee anytime and deposit your $10 in a slot.

After the tour, we moved onto lunch at The Grotto Cafe, located at 6501 E Cave Creek Rd. The Grotto has been serving counter-service style breakfast and lunch in Cave Creek since 2011. And The Grotto features an excellent selection of locally roasted ROC2 coffees. The Grotto is named for the lush desert oasis its outside patio offers on sunny, warm days. Many of us ordered chicken salad sandwich: chopped chicken breast, red onions, green apple, dried ettuce and mayo on a very yummy cranberry walnut bread.
Jill Wilkerson: We had a perfect day learning about the coffee roasting process with great friends, both old and new. Lunch was a delicious treat!
A good time was had by all. Please be sure to visit these local Cave Creek shops next time you need specialty coffee beans or a delicious breakfast or lunch out.

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event Cancellation Policy
Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.
Event Organizer Responsibilities
Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:
Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”
Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.
IMPORTANT AZPCA Information
Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:
1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.
2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.
3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).
4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).
5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.
Policy adopted by majority vote of the Board of Directors at the June 2023 BOD meeting
McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - New to You - PCA
Next month there is the annual new members event (Mar 15th) at the We-Ko-Pa Casino.
I thought this month’s technical article would be about owning your first Porsche. Most Porsche cars are very different to normal everyday cars. Key placement on the left-hand side of the steering wheel, mid-engine and rear engine sports cars and lots of other Porsche details can make your first few weeks of ownership confusing and sometimes frustrating. Today we will cover the basics of Porsche ownership and get you enjoying your Porsche asap!
As the long-time owner and manager at Mcilvain Motors I get technical questions all the time. Typically, most questions can be answered in the owner’s manual for your Porsche. I look up things all the time. Whether it is how to top off your oil, programming your garage door to what to do in an emergency, it’s all in the owner’s manual. Most Porsche have separate manuals just for the radios. Here is an example of a 997 owner’s manual on how to check the oil level.
The newer Porsche takes different weight of oil depending on the year and equipment, the manual will tell you exactly what oil or let you know where to look for the oil type sticker that is usually in or near the engine compartment. If your Porsche didn’t come with a manual, you can order them from the dealer, online or even on eBay for the older Porsche’s. If you can’t find the information you are looking for online or in the manual don’t hessite to email me and I will do my best to help out.
Typically, when I or a customer purchases a used Porsche, we change the oil/filter and flush the brake fluid so we know it was done correctly. You never know what the previous owner did and having the wrong type of oil can cause problems. Visual inspection is always a good idea for a new car to make sure there are no issues. If you hear, smell or feel something is not right with your Porsche don’t wait for the problem to get worse, get it checked out.
You might have the urge to let the Porsche idle when you first start it to warm up the car. Letting it idle when cold can cause a lot of issues. You want to start the Porsche and get moving while keeping the rpms under 3,000 until the Porsche is warmed up. You also want to use a top tier gas station and ALWAYS fill up with 91 octane, anything less than 91 will severely affect performance and could damage the engine.
Battery voltage is very important on the newer Porsche. If you are going to let the car sit for more than a week or two you should use a battery maintainer. This will keep your battery in good condition.
McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - New to You - PCA
What happens when there is a problem with your Porsche. Say your check engine light is on but not flashing. This could mean there is a problem with the emissions system, and it might be ok to continue to drive. The first thing I would check is your gas cap, that is the number one cause of check engine lights we see. If the light is flashing that means, there is a serious issue, and you should safely stop the car. Checking tire pressure and condition will also help keep tire problems to a minimum.
If you have any different questions, feel free to email me or talk to me at the new members meeting on Saturday March 15th at We-Ko-Pa
Who is Scott McIlvain
The current Mcilvain Motors was founded by Scott Mcilvain, great grandson of E.H “Mac” Mcilvain. Scott was hooked on the family business and performance cars at a very early age. He left Prescott and attended Arizona State University where he earned a degree in business. It was while Scott was an account manager at a top 25 marketing agency that he fell in love with his first PORSCHE, a 1979 930. Fast forward to today and Scott now runs Mcilvain Motors, located in Tempe, Arizona and one of the leading independent and affordable late model PORSCHE service specialists.
The Stuttgart Market Letter
Written by David K. Whitlock
January 2025 kicked off the year with steady, if slightly subdued, results in the Porsche auction market. The 69% sell-through rate across 561 cars brought in a total of $41,125,442, a dip from last January’s $44,026,566 off of 592 units. While the market’s cooling trend continued at the top end, there were still standout moments, including two 928s cresting the $100,000 mark, a rare feat for the transaxle model. Meanwhile, the GT2 RS market showed surprising strength, with multiple sales exceeding recent averages and reinforcing its position as one of the most sought-after modern Porsche models. That dollar volume, however, could have been significantly higher had a certain comedian’s race car found a buyer. Instead, it joined the growing list of highprofile no-sales, a sign that while enthusiasm remains, bidders are getting more selective at the upper tiers.
The 928 market saw one of its strongest months in recent memory, with a 67% sell-through rate across 15 sales totaling $380,713. While the model line has historically lagged behind its air-cooled counterparts, two standout results showed that collectors are willing to pay for rarity and presentation. The star of the month was a 1980 928S 5-Speed finished in Lindgrünmetallic over Brown leather with Pasha velour inserts. With 82,000 miles, this example shattered expectations by selling for $142,069, well above the model’s twelve-month average of $34,000 and recent comps in the $40,000 range. The rare color combination appears to have driven the premium, a trend worth watching in the transaxle segment. Also noteworthy was a 1979 928 5-Speed in Silver Metallic over Cork leatherette with Pasha inserts, which had previously been bid to $68,000 as a no-sale in November. This time, it found a buyer at $100,000, despite the twelve-month average sitting at just $27,500 and its nearest mileage comp selling for $45,100. These results reinforce that when it comes to 928s, spec and presentation matter more than ever.
The 991.2 GT2 RS market had a breakout month, further cementing its place as one of the most desirable modern Porsches. Although only three examples crossed the block, two of them delivered staggering results, far surpassing the model’s late-2024 average of $386,000. Leading the charge was a 2018 GT2 RS finished in Miami Blue over Black, equipped with the Weissach Package and showing just 103 miles. It sold for $594,000 at Mecum’s Kissimmee sale, setting a new high-water mark for a non-Clubsport example. Not to be outdone, another 2018 GT2 RS in Red over Black, also with the Weissach Package and 172 miles, hammered at $605,000 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale. With results like these, it’s clear that low-mileage, highly optioned examples remain in high demand, pushing values well beyond recent norms.
For 911s Reimagined by Singer, January told a different story. Historically, 4.0-liter Ed Pink-powered examples have commanded $1M-plus, while earlier 3.8-liter builds have remained sub-$1M. This month, however, two high-spec 4.0-liter examples sold below expectations. The 1991 "Step On It" commission, finished in Blue over Montecello square-weave leather, with just 68 miles, hammered at $966,000 strong, but short of the milliondollar mark. Likewise, a 1989 commission, finished in Green Blood Dark over Baseball Glove Connolly Monza leather, sold for $935,000. More Singer builds are currently available at auction and privately than ever before, giving buyers greater selection and reducing the urgency to bid aggressively. While 4.0-liter builds still command a premium, the automatic $1M floor may no longer be guaranteed, with buyers scrutinizing specs, mileage, and individual commission details more carefully.
The top end of the market struggled, with only two out of eight million-dollar-plus expected cars selling both 959s. The biggest no-sale was the 1969 Porsche 917K, formerly owned by Steve McQueen and used as the hero car in Le Mans. Recently part of the Jerry Seinfeld collection, this historic machine reached a final bid of $25,000,000 but failed to sell, a surprising result for such a significant race car. A familiar face was the 1959 Porsche 718 RSK center-seat Spyder, which failed to sell for an astounding seventh time in a row, this time
The Stuttgart Market Letter
stalling at $2,500,000. Bidders appear to have lost patience with this one. Other notable no-sales included a 1992 Schuppan-Porsche 962CR ($1.5M), a 1966 910 ($1.3M), a 1976 934 ($1.2M), and the infamous CocaCola 935/84 ($1.1M). These results make one thing clear while rarity remains important, it is no longer enough to guarantee a result at the highest levels.
January’s numbers suggest that the Porsche market remains active but selective, particularly at the top. Buyers are paying up for the right cars, as seen with GT2 RS and 928 results, but they are also picking their battles as evidenced by the Singer softening and high-profile no-sales. With more Singer builds available than ever before, increased supply may continue to shape that segment in the months ahead. Looking forward, February brings the Paris Retromobile sales, traditionally a strong venue for European and competition-focused Porsches, while March will bring major auctions in Miami and Amelia Island both key indicators of where the market is heading. If January was any indication, sellers with high expectations may need to adjust their reserves as we move deeper into 2025.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!
Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.
For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.
Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.
While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.
How is a typical HPDE day structured?
A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.
The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.
The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.
What do you need to bring?
Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)
We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.
Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.
There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.
Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

ARIZONA REGION AUTOCROSS EVENT #5
o you know what Punxsutawney Phil’s predicted on February 2, 2025, when he popped out of his hole in the ground, and he saw his shadow? He predicted that the next Arizona Region Autocross Event will be dry and a tad nippy most of the day, and there will be three more autocross events with Arizona Region weather to the end of the 2024-2025 autocross season
I bet you are wondering what the little furry rodent has to do with anything. Ground Hog Day, in German is called “Grundsaudaag”, brings a unique wintertime tradition, but the roots of this strange celebration can actually be traced back to German settlers many centuries ago. The German settlers built their communities in around Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania. The Germans added their own touch to this celebration; in Germany, is believed that if the sun came out on Candlemas Day and an animal (usually a hedgehog) would cast a shadow, there would be a six week more weeks of cold weather, called a second winter. In Arizona Regionland, it’s called a pre-spring.
On Saturday, February 15, 2025, the Arizona Region held the fifth autocross event of the season at the Arizona Motorsports Park (AMP) in Litchfield Park and forty-four drivers (26 PCA members) took to the challenging course with a counterclockwise loop with a showcase sweeper section Each driver drove three-lap runs in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
There were seventeen Group “P” (Porsche Cars) and nine PCA members competed in a Group “X” (non-Porsche) car. One notable Group “X” driver was Mathias A., with a 52.199 second run that he drove on this second lap driving his basically certified Grocery Getter equipped with an unoccupied Child Safety Seat that was placed in the appropriate seating position, out drove every driver, including the Group “P” drivers, in the first group of the morning session Mathias’ time caught the attention of every driver and that did not settle very well with everyone by being outdriven by a grocery getter with a child safety seat.
However, that really motivated three Group “P” drivers in the second run group of the morning session to not let a grocery getter better their times. James H., driving a 2015 Cayman GTS, on his first two laps were far from being close, but on his third and last lap of the morning session, James was able to pull out a run and best Mathais by .008 second with a 52.191 second run.
Then Eric S., driving his 2006 997 Outlaw, wasn’t going to stand being beaten by a grocery getter and was also behind by a few tenths on his first and second laps, but was able to best both Mathais and James’s times with a 52.087 second run on his third lap.
Everybody was wondering if the Grocery Getter was going to be faster than the GT3 RS driven by Kim K. Kim takes to the course and his first lap was not even close, but his second lap run was enough to best the grocery getter with a 52.117 second run, but as Kim came across the line to begin his third lap, he still didn’t know that he bagged (ooh, that is kind of a pun) the grocery getter. Kim’s third lap run was 51.380 seconds which ended up being the fastest Group “P” time of the day. Could you tell that there was a lot of motivation among these three drivers.
In the afternoon session, Ealing J, driving his 2012 Porsche Carrera “S”, he is also going to be your 2025-2026 Autocross Season Autocross Chair, had a lot to say about Mathias’ time. Ealing was able to answer to the call on his second afternoon session lap with 51.899 seconds to best Mathias’ time, but Ealing wasn’t finished yet because he wanted to go after Kim’s best lap run for the “Top Time of the Day”. Although Ealing was in the same 51 second bracket with Kim’s best run but came up a little short with 51.852 seconds on his last lap. This run put Ealing as the second fastest Group “P” car for the event.
There was some scuttlebutt amongst the paddock during the lunch break about maybe creating a new group that would be designated as Group “G” cars for grocery getters with the Child Safety Seat being an optional equipment. That would be a subject for Ealing, the new Region Autocross Chair, to consider for the next season.
First Timer and new member of barely a month, Doulas G., driving his 2021 Carrera, enjoyed his first autocross event under the tutelage of Rick A. Douglas’ first lap in the morning session would be the beginning point as every first timer autocross driver experiences. Douglas improved his time on every subsequent lap in the morning session. His second lap was 5 seconds faster and his third morning lap was almost three seconds faster than his second lap.
The first lap in the afternoon session, well, let’s say was a learning lap however, his second afternoon lap was a tremendous improvement and he gained 10 seconds from his best morning lap time. On his third and final lap of the day he saw almost a second improvement. Overall, Douglas made an improvement of seventeen seconds from his first morning lap run to his last afternoon lap run. Good going Douglas. Hopefully, he was bitten by the autocross bug, and we’ll see him at the next event.
As most of you are aware, there will be three more autocross events for this season. Also, the last event may be the last and final Arizona Region autocross event to be held at AMP because the property is “For Sale” with a possible party interested in acquiring the property for a future commercial business operation.
The three remaining events are March 8, April 5, and April 26. This information and how to register can be found on the Region’s Event Calendar and Motorsport Reg

Porsche market
Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.
The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.
The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month. In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.
Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.
It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model
The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.
Through the Ages now features the latest club events and programs
New for 2025, the Porsche Club of America History Book contains an overview of the club’s history, followed by individual sections covering specific detailed items. Some sections were designed for use as standalone articles for region newsletters. Individual chapters and page numbers can be “clicked on” from the contents page. Major National Awards are also included.
