“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” Dalai Lama

As fall approaches the club’s activities really ramp up. There are events for everyone:

Flight 45- Concours d’Elegance at Porsche Chandler. Abby Ercoline has organized a great event this year, and Andy Cole, Chief Concours Judge is holding the Judging school.

Track Days: Dan Bouet. DE. Chair and John Dowling, Chief Driving Instructor; Kim Kemper, AX Chair with Rick Althouse Co-chair have filled the winter/spring calendar with track day events.

As always check the calendar on the website, which is updated regularly by our fantastic webmaster team of Mike Ferring and Gregg Bookspan. They are also working on updating and improving the website.

On behalf of the Board and entire club, I want to thank Betsy Andrade for 13 dedicated years as the Goodie Store Merchandise Chair. Betsy is stepping aside and we need a volunteer to take on this critical position. The Board has decided, as many other PCA Regions are doing, to utilize the PCA Store for AZPCA logo Apparel, which will make the new Goodie Store Chair’s job less complicated. Here is the job description:

To provide AZPCA members with officially authorized logo apparel, caps, bags, accessories and name badges. Fill special request for logo items to members as needed. Maintain the Goodie Store to sell Porsche-related items to AZPCA members as a low-cost service to those members and to raise money for the Region.

The Goodie Store Chair will still take center role displaying AZPCA apparel at many Club events, especially Flight, New Members’ Day etc.

If you are interested contact me ( president@az.pca.org) or Betsy Andrade (betsy7890@earthlink.net)

It is early October, which means Board of Director Elections. This year we have two Director at Larger Board positions and one-year Treasurer and Secretary positions that were being filled by Marty Ercoline , Treasurer and Gregg Bull, Secretary. Marty was appointed by the Board when our elected Treasure relocated. Marty and Gregg have been terrific at two demanding board positions and they deserve to continue in the role. Gregg has decided to run for the Secretary position for a full two-year term. Please see all candidate bios in this month’s Going Places.

At the beginning of my term as President, one goal was to start an In-person meet a member at the club’s Monthly Member/Dinner Meeting Social. Coming up in the next few months: Jim Bultema will be speaking at the November meeting at Raven Gastropub and Gregg and Ali Bull will be speaking at a future event.

Our members have diverse backgrounds and varied interest. The In-person meet a member provides an opportunity for you to tell us about you, your business career(s), passions, interests and why you decided to own a Porsche, and join PCA .

If you’re interested, please let me know at president@az.pca.org

Make it great month!

PRESIDENT’S NOTE Mark Manente

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

September was another fun filled month for our AZPCA club members.

Members were treated to a car show and great food at Alpio’s Car Barn for our monthly meeting, the catering was done by Sharko’s and Alpio had arranged for us all to dine outside under the stars, very cool indeed, sharp eyes will have noticed the odd new Porsche or two added to Alpio’s simply amazing collection.

Next up was the 10th annual Porsches n’ Pancakes at the Anthem Golf and Country Club, this event is hosted by Frank and Maria Grimmelmann and really is an amazing event, we had over 120 people attend and the car display out front was simply outstanding, see pages 36-37 for a little article we wrote about the event.

A few AZPCA members joined Alpio at Raven Gastropub for an impromptu get together on the 21st evening and it gave us a good idea what will be instore for us at our November Members Meeting, yummy is the word.

Another fan favourite is the annual Cottonwood Charity Drive and Wine tasting, Mark Baker and Jeanne Snyder organized a fantastic weekend adventure that 27 cars and of course their occupants thoroughly enjoyed. The accommodations at The Tavern Hotel were first class as were the selection of places to enjoy a good meal and imbibe in some very debatable Arizona wine, everyone had an opinion which made for some great banter.

As we closed out the month members had the good fortune to get another drive in, this is another Mark B and Jeanne S special to Mt. Lemmon.

Last but not least a few members had the good fortune to take one of Andy Cole’s Concours judges’ class, If I survive the cut, I’ll tell you all about it at our next get together.

“When we show our respect for other living things, they respond with respect for us.” Arapaho

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

PCA AZ Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportuni ty to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly. If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

It’s almost time to VOTE

2024 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CANDIDATES

Marty Ercoline - Treasurer

I am the current Treasurer after stepping in to finish our prior Treasurer’s term who left the area due to a job change. I am asking our members to vote me into this next full two-year term so I can complete my role as AZPCA Treasurer. My wife Abby and I have been AZPCA members since 2014 and we are very active with the AZPCA organization. I bring years of experience serving large social clubs in various operational support positions. In my professional life, I manage my Wealth Management practice and I handle all types of monetary events daily.

When I stepped up to fill in for the prior Treasurer having left the Phoenix area, I got to work looking deep into how we were conducting our financials. I noticed that we were not operating by the PCA National operational guidelines and that we did not have electronic payment capabilities established for paying our vendors quickly and efficiently. I also realized our QuickBooks had been setup in a very cumbersome manner, making it difficult to obtain much needed balances and financial reports when needed. I also realized our club banking account information had not been updated for almost 10 years. First, I cleared up our Bank account profile and officer information. Secondly, I established electronic bill payment and Zelle services for our vendors and members. Third, I put in many hours to get our QuickBooks running much more efficiently and matched our club financial processes to the PCA Operations manual. We are now in compliance with National’s recommendations, we now have the ability to pay our invoices electronically within minutes, our bank accounts are current, and our QuickBooks is easier to manage with our key financial reports being more accurate. I’m planning to setup financial reports for each Director so they can manage their event cash flows with more accurate information.

I’ve been married to my wonderful wife Abby for 36+ years and we are avid Porsche owners. Abby is the current Social Director for the Club. I love to drive my 911’s and she loves her Macan. We have two grown children, who live and work in the Phoenix valley and are working hard to become Porsche owners. Abby and I like rescuing dogs and support multiple no-kill pet shelters.

Gregg Bull - Secretary

I am currently the Club Secretary and have been in the role on an ‘interim’ basis for the past year, when the position was vacated early. I was happy to quickly step up and support our Club.

During the past year I have become very involved in our Club administration, activities and have helped foster the culture of the club. By day I am an Aerospace Engineer and have been in the aerospace industry for over 35 years.

I have had the opportunity to work on some fascinating projects over the years from Mars Rovers to Asteroid sampling missions and future Moon missions. My attention to detail has always served me well in my career and I believe it is a fundamental skill to fulfill the role of Secretary for the club.

I have been happily married for over 30 years to my beautiful wife Alison, and we have a daughter, who is currently studying to become an Engineer. We moved from Canada to Arizona in July of 2019 and have loved every minute of it. We purchased our 1995 Porsche 993 Cabriolet in May of 2021 and quickly joined AZPCA. During this time, we have thoroughly enjoyed participating in AZPCA events, volunteering (Ali and I are the Going Places newsletter editors) and we have met many wonderful members, many of whom have become close friends.

I believe that continuing in the position of Club Secretary would benefit both the club with continuity and would allow me to continue to develop even greater connectivity with our board and membership. I look forward to the opportunity to serve the club in the near future.

2024 DIRECTORS AT LARGE CANDIDATES

Aloha - I enjoyed my first Porsche, a 1974-914, back in 1979-1982 and right here in Tempe during 1980-1982. Life and career left a big gap until I purchased a 1982-911SC Targa in 2005. I joined PCA in 2006 as a member of the Nordstern region in Minnesota Shortly after that I moved to Hawaii and have been a member of the Hawaii region. When I relocated to Maui in 2015, I became the Maui liaison for the HI region. I was the one man show for the Island and grew the membership from the 12, that didn't even know each other, to 53 members. There are hundreds of Pcars on the island however it was always a hard sell to get people to join. I planned and organized four driving events every year and wore all hats as the liaison, president, membership chair, social chair etc. In 2020 during Covid I retired and we left the Islands and relocated back here in Arizona . Thanks for your consideration

I am a semi-retired Medical Physicist and have been active in the PCA for 30 years. I have been President of the Southern Arizona Region and twice President of the Arizona Region. I have been an editor of Going Places and have organized Flight twice. I have been an instructor for DE including setting up our first classroom program for DE. I have organized many tours over the years including Hot Air Balloon Tours to New Mexico and Off-Road tours. I currently own seven Porsches (but only 4 are running). I believe my historic experience would be of benefit to the board and I would be honored to serve.

I have been an active member of the Arizona Region of PCA for 7 years, and currently I am seeking the position of Director at Large. I have been past Sponsorship chair, and for the past 3 years, to the present, I have served as your Membership chair. During that time, we have increased our club by 30%. I have engaged potential members in every type of surrounding imaginable with remarkable success. At meetings and events, I have spoken to and welcomed new as well as existing members by discussing members’ benefits and questions. There has not been a time that I have not had one sort of sports car or exotic car in my garage. It was in 2015 that I found an unusual empty spot in the garage. Remembering the first time seeing a Porsche 944, I started researching Porsches and asked myself, why haven’t you had a Porsche? Well after owning my first, I knew this would not be my last Porsche. Four Porsches later I have a Macan and a 718 Cayman T. While the right 944 is still elusive, I am sure one day I will find the one.

I attended the University of Washington and majored in business. I took over a failing business at age 20 while continuing my education at night. As CEO and owner, I took the company to be the largest company of its kind in Western Washington and entered markets in an additional six states. After 26 years I retired in 2001 and became a snowbird in beautiful Arizona and made Phoenix my residence with my better half Jane. In my spare time I buy and remodel homes, enjoy golfing and photography. I ask for your vote to be your next director at large as I continue to help our great club.

We are at Arizona Motorsports Park on Saturday, October 14- just a month away! We are eager to hit the track there and hope we see you there. We have a new program for first timers that would like to just get a feel for a track day but without the full day commitment- it’s called “Track Experience”. If that sounds like something you’d be interested in (or you know someone that would be), register for that ASAP as there are only a few spots available. More details are available on the registration page. Otherwise, we are running the normal Novice, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced groups.

More Details and Registration for AMP: www.msreg.com/10-14

INDE is an amazing track that you have to experience at least once per year, so join us at Inde Motorsports Ranch on Saturday and Sunday, November 4-5! For this HPDE event, we will also be offering optional Time Trials sessions.

What are Time Trials? Leave the excuses at the door and show us your best time! No traffic, just three clean timed laps in the morning and afternoon. Times are broadcast for bragging rights. Transponders are available to rent if you need one. With enough participants, hey, maybe we’ll turn it into a season championship. This is an inexpensive add-on that really adds a lot of fun and competition to the event.

There are one or two day options, and we will be running a different track configuration on each day to keep it fresh. On top of the normal groups (Novice, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced), we will be offering the “Track Experience” program described above to those interested. There are always amazing cars out at INDE, so come join us. It will be a great weekend!

More Details and Registration for INDE: www.msreg.com/inde-2023

Volunteer!

As always, we cannot put on these events without the support of drivers and volunteers. If you would like to volunteer for either (or both) of these events, there are volunteer options available on the registration page. We need corner workers for AMP and that will either earn you a $175 MSR credit you can use toward a future track day or $100 cash. Otherwise, if you can help with safety inspections, check-in, lunch pickup, etc etc, feel free to check out the options on the registration.

Hope to see you soon!

Dan

AZPCA REGION eNEWS

AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.

It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.

Upcoming AZPCA Off Road Tour

AZPCA Four Peaks Off Road Tour (for Cayennes and Macans – and other 4 wheel drive vehicles) Oct 8 2023 8:30 am

Join us in your 4-wheel drive Porsche for an off-road tour across Four Peaks to Roosevelt Lake. We will meet at the Sunnyside Breakfast Lounge by 8:30am for a drivers meeting (come earlier of you want a great breakfast) and we will plan to leave by 9:00am. We will drive up Ellsworth Rd to the Beeline Highway to the entrance to the Four Peaks trail (Forest Road 143). The drive will take us across Four Peaks mountain range to State Route 188 at Roosevelt Lake where we will have lunch at the Butcher Hook Restaurant (State Route 188, Sign #259, Tonto Basin, AZ). We will then return to Phoenix via the Beeline Highway. The tour will be on unmaintained dirt roads and trails for about three to four hours through beautiful backcountry and should be manageable by everyone.

This will be a sometimes very bumpy but relatively easy road for your Cayenne or Macan (or any other four-wheel drive vehicle) Street tires will be fine but expect to get your car very dirty! It is recommended (not essential) to reduce your tire pressures to about 28-30 psi for a more comfortable ride but you will need a way to refill them when we reach Roosevelt Lake. Remember to bring plenty of water! All drivers will be required to download, print, complete and bring the PCA Off-Road SelfInspection Checklist All registrants will receive more detailed instructions about a week before the drive.

Meeting Start location:

Future AZPCA Drive : Fall Colors Tour

Fall Colors Tour to Flagstaff

October 29-31, 2023

Note that this is a 3-day Sunday-Tuesday event.

After last year’s overnighter to Flagstaff, the consensus was that our stay at Little America was too short! So this year we are adding a day, with options on the second day planned to satisfy anyone’s interest in the historic and scenic sights in and around Flagstaff.

The fall colors in late October should be out in all their glory, through Oak Creek Canyon and around Northern Arizona. Our drive on Sunday follows the Red Rock Scenic Byway to Sedona, where we will have lunch together and then take the beautiful drive through Oak Creek Canyon, where the leaves should be putting on their show!

On arrival in Flagstaff we will check into the Little America Hotel, Flagstaff’s only AAA approved Four Diamond hotel. “Set in 500 acres of Ponderosa pine forest, Little America Flagstaff combines inviting hospitality with the natural beauty of Northern Arizona.” A special group rate has been arranged, which you can take advantage of when you register for the event. Everyone will be on their own for the rest of the day, to explore the Flagstaff area or just hang out at the hotel. Chances are just about guaranteed that there will be an impromptu happy hour gathering sometime before dinner (on your own).

On Monday morning various destinations await, where you can join others to explore attractions in Flagstaff and Northern Arizona. We will organize groups to head out together to destinations including:

• Riordan Mansion (if you didn’t join the tour last year, this is a must-do!)

• Lowell Observatory

• Museum of Northern Arizona

• Flagstaff Area National Monuments: Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki

• Meteor Crater (if you missed this on the overnighter to La Posada in August)

After a day of sightseeing, we’ll gather for a casual dinner at Grimaldi's Pizzeria, a very short drive from Little America. Or if you wish, you can dine at the Silver Pine restaurant at the hotel, or go elsewhere.

On Tuesday after breakfast we will take the scenic drive to the Snowbowl. The fall colors should be dazzling as we head up toward Arizona’s tallest peak Your return home is on your own.

Future AZPCA Drives - Tour around the City

Valley View Dinner Drive

Sunday, November 12, 2023

Take a leisurely in-town tour to some iconic locations in the Phoenix area where you can enjoy scenic views in perfect top-down weather.

The route will take us from Scottsdale to the Arizona Biltmore area via Lincoln Drive, where the view of downtown Phoenix appears from the top of 24th Street. After a loop around Biltmore Estates we will head up Camelback Mountain for views of the Valley from several perspectives.

Next, we will drive through Papago Park across town to South Mountain, where the spectacular panoramic views of the Valley from Dobbins Lookout are always impressive.

Finally, a dazzling view will be seen from our dinner destination at Rustler’s Rooste, above the Arizona Grand Resort. The lights of the Valley will be gleaming as we enjoy a dinner of beef brisket and BBQ chicken with all the fixin’s.

An alternative to our usual out-of-town drives, this one is at the start of the perfect six months of the year that remind us why we make the Valley of the Sun our home.

again this year would be doing them a gross disservice. The venue is a AZPCA Club favourite and the fact we attracted over 120 members and some simply amazing Porsches was great.

The Food was excellent as usual and the additional omelet station meant we had much smaller queues than normal and the food was piping hot, the new location for the savoury station worked so much better this year and if you were so inclined the Mimosa team were conveniently located in the corner of the room facing a beautiful golf course view.

Social Event - Anthem

As usual Frank was left unattended with a microphone in hand and a captive audience, Frank didn’t disappoint us. We had a few new members attend their very first Anthem and by all accounts they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

These events wouldn’t be a success without the amazing staff that helped make everything run smoothly and the faithful AZPCA Members who volunteered their spare time to help out. A special thanks goes out to Richard Bernal from Event Party Photos who again this year donated not only his time but also all those EPIC photos he took.

Stay safe and we’ll see you at an upcoming AZPCA event.

GOING PLACES 10.2023 | 37 |

We gathered together by the McDonald's at Deer Valley Rd and I17 to take on coffee and get rid of the 1st cup of coffee as well as have the drivers meeting.

We had 28 Porsches assembled on this beautiful fall day, well at least the calendar said it was fall.

We set out on the three-hour tour at 8 AM, oops we're not headed to Gilligan's Island. After driving up I17 to Cordes Junction. We turned off towards Prescott.

They really interesting part of the drive began when we hit Highway 89A, we proceeded up over Mingus Mountain towards Jerome, the drive had many twists and turns. We quickly got up into Pine trees and mountain regions. As we dropped down off of the top of the mountain into Jerome, we were greeted almost as a parade would be. A group of kids were sitting on a wall above the road give me the old-fashioned truckers blow the horn signal. You know the one, pulling down with your hand at a 90° angle from your elbow. I gave them a courtesy beep of the horn, and they were very happy and waved back.

But alas, Jerome was not our destination. While it could be a fun one, we were moving on to Cottonwood.

We arrived in Cottonwood to check in at the hotel. The Tavern Hotel was our headquarters it is a very nice modern boutique hotel right in the middle of town. We then took a short walk to Colt barbecue just down the street for a group lunch. They offered an excellent pulled pork sandwich lunch. I can't speak for the part of the group that had salads but the pulled pork was outstanding and I know y'all were jealous looking at my macaroni and cheese as well.

| 38 |
AZPCA Drive - Cottonwood Wine & Charity

With a little food base, we set out for an afternoon of wine-tasting. We had three wine-tasting rooms to visit and we split the group up so we rotated through these rooms. The tasting rooms were Arizona Stronghold Wines, Tantrum Wines and Cellar 433. Each venue provided a different but cozy atmosphere to sit around and taste their wines and get to know our fellow Porsche club members on a more personal level.

We had a great conversation and wonderful wines at each location. Of interesting note is the actual grapevines are primarily grown in the Willcox Arizona area south east of Tucson. This seemed to be a common theme with each of the wine tasting rooms, the higher elevation in climate of South East Arizona, lends itself to producing grapes. For the Arizona History buffs, Cochise Stronghold was the area that Cochise used to elude the US Calvary while making raids in the Southeastern Arizona area, I am guessing that was the inspiration for the "Arizona Stronghold Wines" name

After a fun afternoon, the focus change back to food. Our host hotel, the Tavern Hotel owns several restaurants in the area and offered us a discount. Many of our members went to Nick's Italian Steak and Crab House. Judging by the quick sellout of reservations, this was a fan favorite from prior years. Many also went to The Tavern Grill adjacent to the Hotel. Rumor has it that there was one bold couple who went light on the wind drinking so they could drive back up to Jerome and visit The Clinkscale Bar and Grill for an outstanding filet mignon at dinner. Maybe Nicks can do as well but I found the dinner at Clinkscale (oops, I spilled the beans about the mystery guest) to be one of the best I have had in Arizona.

In the morning we were all on our own and some had plans to stay on or continue their journey. We enjoyed a very tasty breakfast at Crema Craft Kitchen across Main Street.

All in all a quick but fun getaway from the valley. Thanks to our organizers and the Tavern Hotel for a great drive.

A little tour of the Petersen Automotive Museum

Porsche exhibit at Petersen impresses

Arizona 356 Outlaws president Bob Mulica and his wife, Susan, recently visited the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles specifically to see the ongoing Porsche 75th anniversary exhibit, titled “We Are Porsche.”

The dazzling show, created in collaboration with Porsche Cars North America, focuses on the early days of Porsche sports cars and racers, with plenty of historic and noteworthy 356s among the group, as well as famed 904 and 907 racers, and memorable 911s.

Other famous entries are the original "Outlaw Porsche," Dean Jeffries’ custom 1957 356 Carrera, and the 1973 917/30 Can-Am Spyder driven by Mark Donohue, one of the most powerful and successful race cars of its era.

The exhibit also highlights some of the important people who helped kick off and continue Porsche’s amazing run, including the seminal New York car dealer Max Hoffman, known for his early marketing of the 356 in the US and conceptualizing the 356 Speedster, and the West Coast entrepreneur Vasek Polak, who helped create Porsche’s hottest market on the planet.

Bob highly recommends visiting the Petersen exhibit, which features historic details that even well-versed Outlaws might not know. The show continues through April 2024. Visit www.petersen.org for more information.

Here are a few other Porsches that caught Bob’s eye, and his camera

Line-Extending in the Ozone Again

If you’ve been following this space, you’ll recall that we’ve periodically chronicled some of the ridiculous and the sublime examples of how our favorite marque has capitalized on its name and reputation.

We’ve written about the high-rise Porsche apartment building in South Florida that features an elevator which whisks your four-wheel baby right up to your aerie, where it then poses, safe and sound, and within drooling distance of your living room. The audio speakers that are fashioned from a GT3 exhaust system. The Airstream silver bullet travel trailer that’s been breathed on by the elves of Stuttgart. The yacht. The runabout. The electric runabout that features tech coopted from the Taycan.

I thought the subject was covered to death. Until write-ups of several new offerings made their way into my consciousness. I’ll get to them in a minute.

Now, I have nothing against line extensions. They’re a time-honored way for companies with established brands to add, not only market share, but new markets to their portfolio. Porsche has been really, really good at it. I mean, just where would our favorite marque be today without the Cayenne and the Macan?

I’ll tell you. I looked it up. And let’s just take Porsche Cars North America (PCNA.) Last year, the last full calendar year, PCNA sold 6,609 911s, 718s, Panameras and Taycans, combined. That’s right, combined. In all variations. Now, that’s against, believe it or not, 6,611 Cayennes, alone, and 7,735 Macans.

Yeah, I know. And here’s the kicker. In all its corporate literature, they’ll start with this phrase; “Porsche, the sports car manufacturer….” Reporting earnings, introducing corkscrews and golf bags. Logo branding irons. Whatever. That’s the halo, the umbrella, that makes it all possible.

And that, dear friends, is the value of a brand. Just how do they do it? Who decides what to get behind? Am I the only one confused by just where all this stuff comes from?

Turns out that, since 2007, it’s all been under the tutelage of Studio F.A. Porsche. Here’s their boilerplate; “We are a premium design agency and the origin of the brand Porsche Design…. Since the foundation of our studio by Prof. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1972, we are striving for the perfect symbiosis of form and function….”

That’s of course Butzi Porsche, one of Ferry’s sons, who designed the 904 and the original 911, and whose first iconic line extensions were the Porsche Design chronograph and the sunglasses.

You should know that the Studio F.A Porsche website lists some 48 companies with whom they’ve worked, designing everything from a washing machine to airport seating to a champagne refrigerator to fitness equipment to a spray gun.

| 56 |

So, I should have not been surprised when I received a link to the “911 Spotlight Classic

Porsche Originals.” It’s a spotlight. And it doesn’t look anything like any headlights I’ve ever seen on a 911. It’s not even close. But, then again, a Cayenne doesn’t look like a Boxster S, either. So, well, uh, whatever.

Now, I’ve come across another new product line, one that made me sit up straight and say, huh? It’s called Porsche x Backdrop. I quote, “Porsche’s iconic car colors, now for your home for the first time in limited-edition premium paint.” Let me continue; “To celebrate 75 years of Porsche Sports Cars, we created a special limited-edition Porsche paint palette. This collection reflects our shared commitment to meticulous quality, an appreciation for color, and exceptional design.”

The iconic colors? There are four. Porsche Irish Green, which looks a lot like British Racing Green, Porsche Speed Yellow, which makes me think of Ferrari’s Giallo Modena, Porsche Riviera Blue, which they also call electric blue, you get the idea, and my favorite, Porsche Ruby Star, which I just call pink, bright pink.

Ok, I’m worried. When I think iconic colors, I think Arctic Silver. I think Guards Red. I think Gulf livery. I think Martini Racing. I think Triple Black, which I believe is the invention of Porsche designer Tony Lapine, who ordered his own 356 that way, and it was sacrilege at the time. Tony, you may recall, oversaw the 928, which actually is acknowledged today as a classic design

What would Tony think? What would Butzi? What do I? Ahh, once again, it all comes back to the phrase, there’s no accounting for taste. Even for line extensions, even from Porsche, the sports car manufacturer. The market votes with its pocketbook.

Whois Danielle Badler? A New York native, Danielle Badler embarked on a writing and communications consulting career in early 2007, following more than 30 years in corporate communications, the last ten years as the chief global communications officer for three Fortune 500 companies, General Instrument Corporation, Unisys Corporation and Western Union.

Danielle now calls Denver home.

TechTime with Scott M - Pre-Purchase Inspections

You may have a Porsche and looking for a second or new to Porsche and want to buy your first. Whatever your situation is when buying a PORSCHE, a “Pre-Purchase Inspection” or “PPI” is something to seriously consider. Having a PPI preformed or looking at the PORSCHE yourself can alert you to potential issues and save you a lot of money buying the wrong car. Think of it as a health check before purchasing the car.

I have done hundreds of PORSCHES PPI’s over the years and seen most every issue you can think of on PORSCHE’s that were for sale. Sone issues are obvious with a quick look and some are more hidden. In this article I will be showing you what to look for with a used PORSCHE. Some items anyone can check which access to the PORSCHE and some a professional will have to handle because you may not have the equipment needed.

First thing I do when preforming a PPI is to look at the body and the paint.

Do the body panels look correctly or is something off. After looking for paint imperfections (rock chips etc.) I look to see if the paint looks original or has something be resprayed. Signs of paint work will include paint with too much clear coat applied that will leave hard drips of clean coat, PORSCHE will not have any drips of clear on body panels.

Other re paint issues can be color that doesn’t match or poor paint spray which will give dry spots or “fish eyes”.

| 60 |

Once the inspection of the body is complete, I move onto the wheels, tires and brakes. Do the wheels have curb rash or cracks, are the wheels factory or aftermarket. There are a lot of good aftermarket wheels out there and some really poor ones. Every tire has a 4-digit date code on the side, first two are the month and the second is the year. You want tires that are four years old or less. Next, I will heck the brakes, does the rotors have more than a 1mm lip on the outside edge and do the pads have more than 5mm or pad left.

Do the struts/shocks show wetness on the outside which typically means they have blown. If it is feasible, I will pull the oil filter and cut it open to look for and metal or plastic that might have been trapped by the filter.

Pulling the filter is one of the best ways to see the internal health of the engine. I will check the engine for any fluid leaks, the same for the transmission. Checking the battery condition is always to good idea if you have a battery tester. While checking the battery in most PORSCHE’s I will take a look at the cabin filter. This filter shows me if it’s been replaced or

GOING PLACES 10.2023 | 61 |

still original. This will give me an idea how the car was serviced in the past. I have even seen cabin filters with big holes in the where a rodent had chewed and made the inside of the dash their home, you definitely do not want to purchase a PORCHE with this issue the first time you turn the heat on.

Having a PORSCHE tester is really important to completing a thorough PPI. Depending on the model of PORSCHE I will check the DME (computer that controls the engine) for any stored codes and if possible, the over rev report.

This report shows how the car was driven in the past and will let you know if the engine has been mechanically over reved above redline. This report cannot be cleared and will stay with the car so it is very important to know the over revs (only for manual cars). After this I will check the cam shaft deviation which tells me if there are any issues with the timing chains or guides. Then a general check of all the other computers that talk to each other and that there are no problems.

One of the last things I do on a PPI is the test drive. I am hyper sensitive to any noises on startup and cold idle. Is there a lifter that has bled down and if so, does the noise go away. Any other engine/driveline noises are noted. While driving does the PORSCHE pull one way or the other? Does it brake in a straight line or pull one way? Wheel bearings and tire noises are best diagnosed while driving so any vibrations or weird noises? Do all the switches and buttons work? Then one last look with the PORSCHE parked in the sun to look for any paint /body work issues.

Now each model has their own issues that need to be investigated and may be out of the scope of your average buyer. Age is another huge factor in the PPI process. Any air-cooled PORSCHE I am going to recommend a leak down test were 100psi of air is injected into each cylinder while at TDC and the amount or air that “leaks out” of the cylinder is measured. This a great tool to check the condition of the valves, rings and cylinder. Most newer cars do not need this test because the DME will keep track of a bad cylinder. Any age of PORSCHE could use a ppi, I have seen almost new cars with body damage the seller was trying to hid. With a sharp eye most buyers can look at most things listed in this article and get a good over all feel for the PORSCHE and its condition. Having a professional preform a quality PPI is going to possible save you a lot of money buying a PORSCHE that has problems.

If you are looking at a specific age of model car, send me a message and I can help tell you what to look for and come up with a plan so you don’t end up like some people that will have to put big money into a PORSHCE that they just purchased.

Have ideas for future technical articles, email them to me at scott@mcilvainmotors.com

Stuttgart Market Letter

As expected, August toppled all previous months of this year in terms of dollar volume and unit volume as 680 cars ran through the various auctions both online and in-person with $58,551,955 in sales thanks to the auctions at Monterey’s Car Week. The real surprise was the 66% sell-through rate, which is the lowest thus far in 2023.

Monterey, by itself, could be classified as a rough week for the Porsche Market, as only 61% of cars offered found new homes. The top of the market took the biggest hit, with cars over $1m selling at only a 50% sell-through rate, with not a single car over $2m hammering sold. We saw similar results online, with only one million-dollar car selling out of the five offered during the month. Only two of the $1m+ cars sold were vintage race cars, with the rest being modern classics, a theme we’ve seen this year played out in auction after auction.

In August, we saw more 356s cross the block than in any other month in memory, with a total of 50 cars, 33 of which sold. After a solid recent price run, the 356 market shows signs of softening as several cars brought final bids on the lower pricing side. One example would be the 1956 356A 1500 GS Carrera Speedster that sold for $850,000 at Mecum. This time last year, we saw a GS/ GT example hammer down at $1,325,000, quite a price difference. We’ve also had several recent online sales on the softer side, with a 1965 356C Coupe in superb condition bringing only $126,000 when these were recently going for over $130k.

911 Turbos were a mixed bag, with only half of the early 930s finding homes and the average price hovering just over $150k, thanks partly to the $405,000 and $267,500 paid for a pair of 1979 examples. Others hovered in the $130k range, with a low of $90,000 paid for a 1978 911 Turbo. Later, 3.3-liter 930s looked flat with an exceptional car, the very first 911 Turbo Slant Nose, failing to sell at a high bid of $181,000. That car was most likely about $100k short of where it needed to be, as it’s such a significant part of Porsche’s Turbo history.

964 Turbos continued their climb, with average prices for 3.3-liter cars cresting the $180,000 mark and 3.6-liter cars over $330,000. Surprisingly, a 1994 911 Turbo S 3.8 only brought $800,000, as these cars have been in the $1m range until the past two months. 993 Turbo and Turbo S’ also had a strong showing, with the lowest price paid being $160,000 for a modified 1996 example repainted in Blue. On the other side of the coin, we had a new record achieved at $810,000 for a sub-2,000-mile 1997 Turbo S finished in Cobalt with racing stripes to match the original owner’s 917 and 935 race cars.

992 GT3s continued their slide with several bids in the $240k range, and only one Touring example selling for over $300k at Gooding & Co. The 991.1 GT3 RS showed some strength with an average sales price of around $200k. Where the GT market looked its softest was with RSRs. Of the three examples offered, none found homes showing that they are either too new to be considered collectible race cars or sellers had hopes of much higher prices. Probably a combination of both.

As I write this, it is still too early to tell what September will bring as we’re in the midst of a holiday weekend. But if August is any indication, I wouldn’t be surprised if our sell-through rate remains below 70% and we start to see some new lows achieved for cars that have been climbing since COVID.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

| 64 |

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!
