Welcome to the 2025 Irish St. Leger...

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the final of the Callaway Pro-Am at Stud Irish St. Leger at Limerick Greyhound Stadium.

This prestigious event is one of Ireland’s top greyhound races, known for its competitive fields and thrilling finishes. The meeting draws leading greyhounds, trainers, and owners competing for glory and significant prize money. As a classic race, it tests the stamina, speed, and skill of its participants.

This year’s Irish St. Leger final promises to be one to remember. Clonbrien Treaty returns not just to defend his crown, but to make history, aiming to become the first greyhound ever to win the classic three years in a row. And what a final to do it in, the calibre of competition ensures a final of the highest quality, with every contender set on including their name on the roll of honour.

I wish to sincerely acknowledge Denis Murphy, the generous sponsor of this year’s event. Denis is not only a proud greyhound owner but also is a passionate and longstanding supporter of greyhound racing. His commitment and dedication to the sport are deeply appreciated and play a vital role in sustaining the success and vibrancy of Irish greyhound racing.

The first half of 2025 has been exceptionally successful for our sport. Rásaíocht Con Éireann recently published its inaugural Industry Activity Report covering January to June 2025, alongside the launch of our ambitious five-year strategic plan (2025–2029). These achievements demonstrate our renewed commitment to growth, sustainability, and excellence within greyhound racing.

During this period, 691 race meetings were held across 14 tracks, featuring 7,201 races and distributing prize money totalling €4,300,564. Additionally, the industry welcomed 526 new owners, with 3,737 existing owners and 295 licensed trainers actively involved in racing.

This vibrant activity reflects not only the passion of those engaged in the sport but also the enduring appeal of greyhound racing throughout Ireland.

As we celebrate the competitors and the community that bring this sport to life, I extend my best wishes to all finalists and look forward to an exhilarating finale.

Thank you for your continued support of Irish greyhound racing. Le meas,

Chairperson

Rásaíocht Con Éireann/Greyhound Racing Ireland

Celtic Park, Belfast, played host to the inaugural Irish St. Leger in 1932 and after being shuffled around a number of venues such as Clonmel, Shelbourne Park and Harolds Cross, it found its home in 1944 in the Treaty County of Limerick.

Since then, it has been firmly established as one of the most prestigious events on the Irish Greyhound racing calendar and is an event that is targeted yearly by the Country’s leading handlers. The legendary Ger McKenna is at the top of the tree in that respect having landed the event no fewer than twelve times, while Matt O’Donnell also proved hugely successful in claiming gold on seven occasions.

As with all of the flagship events, none would be possible without the support of a sponsor and Denis Murphy has played a key role in the 2025 running of the event. Known as the ‘Callaway’ man, Denis has enjoyed huge success in recent years with a number of trackers with Callaway Knegare, in particular, widely seen as one of the fastest in the land at present.

This year, the Irish St. Leger carries the name of another sensational tracker in recent years, Callaway Pro Am. During his time on track, he was the beaten favourite in the final of the 2022 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby, and it’s not a surprise that he has made a powerful start to stud duties with his prodigy just starting to hit the tracks up and down the Country.

We extend our gratitude to Denis for his sponsorship of the classic and wish him every success with this trackers going forward.

The Story So Far….

JOSEPE SETS THE STANDARD

IN ST. LEGER OPENER

With many eyes focused on the reigning and defending champion Clonbrien Treaty in heat seven, it was in fact Toolmaker Josepe that set the standard in round one as the Robert Gleeson-trained star got back to winning

ways after a run of four straight defeats.

A tracker that caught the eye in the Con & Annie Kirby with his devastating finishing power, he again had to come from off-the-pace in heat six to storm past Magical Sapphire in the closing stages and post a rapid 29.68. Next best in terms of the clock was Blastoff Cooper as he posted 29.73 and Philip Buckley, who won this event in 2018 with Blastoff Billy, was to enjoy further success on the night as Blastoff Heffo ran a magnificent race to deny Clonbrien Treaty a comeback win in 29.78.

Paul Hennessy sits third on the list of highest win-

ning trainers of the Irish St. Leger with four prior victories and the strong-running Hello Diego got his campaign off to the perfect start in heat one as he took off at the halfway mark to post 29.81. Ballyhimikin Ben got Graham Holland’s bid for a third successive title off and running in heat two as he displayed all of his battling qualities to land heat two in 29.94, while another standout winner on the night was Daleroad Duke as he put his Dundalk International defeat behind him with a five length victory in 29.74 for Pat Guilfoyle. The ever-reliable Faypoint Harvey was to seal a double for Graham Holland in heat four as he too led from trap-toline in 29.81, and the concluding heat of the night saw Peter Cronin get in on the act as Swithins Jim struck late to see off Drombeg Banner in 29.90.

DIEGO QUICKEST, PROMISING

SIGNS FROM TREATY

While it may have been a case of shadow boxing for many in the opening round, the classic shot into life in the quarter finals with a number of spectacular displays, the fastest of which coming from Hello Diego. Indeed, the Paul Hennessy-trained powerhouse, owned by Paul Hynes, once again showed his appreciation for the Limerick circuit as he took control at the penultimate bend before drawing clear of Drombeg Banner in a rapid 29.41. Incidentally, kennel companion Flight Club would go on to finish third in this contest. Despite the heroics of Hello Diego, those in attendance were left salivating at the performance of Clonbrien Treaty, who very much outlined his intentions with a terrific return to form in the opening quarter final. Jim and Muireann Murphy’s multiple classic winner was amongst a red-hot line-up, however, showed early speed to get loose in the opening exchanges. In doing so, the son of Pestana stayed on much stronger on this occasion to see off Daleroad Duke by one and a half lengths, in 29.48.

Kennel companion and another first round winner in the form of Ballyhimikin Ben claimed the final qualification spot in third. As has become the norm in recent year’s, Graham Holland possessed a magnificent hand ahead of the quarter finals and Faypoint Harvey sealed a double on the night as he won for the sixteenth time in his career.

Although Patricia Flanagan’s star didn’t break too fluently on this occasion, he proved a tough to crack for Blastoff Heffo as he accounted for a one and a half length victory in 29.73. Magical Sapphire ensured Pat Guilfoyle would be doubly represented in the semis as she claimed the final qualifying position in third. While the fancied runners were coming to the fore in the heats prior, this certainly wasn’t the case in the concluding quarter final as 33/1 chance, Flyers Minnie, secured a memorable victory for Colm Fitzgerald and The-Zero-Zero-Syndicate.

In truth, there was nothing fortunate surrounding the

outcome as the daughter of Ballyhimikin Jet pulled out all the stops to deny the incredibly fast Droopys Deploy by a short-head in 29.92. Cagey Billy had rediscovered his very best in recent weeks having been just pipped in the final of the Tipperary Cup at Thurles and he finished two lengths further back to advance into the semi finals.

DIEGO & TREATY CONTINUE

THEIR ASSAULT

The stage was set for two sensational semi final contests last weekend and while Clonbrien Treaty went another step closer to an historic three-in-a-row, Hello Diego was the show-stopper as Paul Hennessy’s charge romped to victory with another phenomenal display from the halfway mark.

Running in the second semi, Hello Diego went to traps as the 13/8 favourite and in truth, there was never any doubt surrounding the victory once the Paul Hynes runner pinged from trap five to post a smart 2.80 sectional. Briefly joined by Cagey Billy as the pair rounded the opening corner, Hello Diego got to work passing the sprint boxes and he was in full throttle midway down the back as he increased his lead to three parts of a length.

In behind at this point was Cagey Billy, however, Blastoff Heffo was showing all sorts of back straight pace to emerge as the most likely candidate to chase home Hello Diego. With the son of Jaytee Yankee was very much in his comfort zone as he revved his engine to go two clear around the penultimate bend, Blastoff Heffo hit the turn at exactly the right time to nudge his rivals aside and go a clear second. The battle was now on for the final qualifying position as both Cagey Billy and Droopys Deploy went toe-to-toe, however, there was certainly no disputing the winner as Hello Diego drew clear to win by an extending five lengths. Blastoff Heffo ran a solid race to ensure Philip Buckley will be represented in the final, while Cagey Billy showed all of his battling qualities to advance in third. The time was a blistering 29.49.

Clonbrien Treaty showed signs of a return to his very best in the quarter finals as he blew holes in his rivals and he was equally as impressive under different circumstances in the opening semi.

A greyhound that we have run out of superlatives to describe, Clonbrien Treaty was installed as the 6/5 jolly and he was to comfortably reward followers for their market support, albeit after an early scare! Much was made of his trap four draw coming into this contest and those doubts looked to have some context early doors as he walked from his middle berth to occupy the rear at traprise.

However, within two strides, the multiple-classic winner was back on terms and he showcased his wonderful early speed to storm between both Flight Club and Drombeg Banner on the run-up. In doing so,

the strapping blue hit the front rounding the opening bend and he held a narrow advantage over ‘Banner’ entering the back straight. Quickly outpacing his rival off the second turn, Clonbrien Treaty manufactured a two and a half length advantage over Drombeg Banner, while Flight Club was also making steady progress in third as he aimed to ensure Paul Hennessy would be doubly represented in the decider.

With Clonbrien Treaty continuing to set a scorching gallop out in front, his petrol gauge was showing little sign of emptying and he powered his way up the Limerick hill to seal a nineteenth career victory. Flight Club came home at speed to finish three and a half lengths back in second, while young handler Evan McAuliffe saw his Drombeg Banner seal the final qualifying position in third. The time was 29.68.

MULTIPLE WINNERS

The names of the legendary Ger McKenna (12) and Matt O’Donnell (7) were spoken of at the start of this piece in regard to accumulated triumphs, however, should either Hello Diego or Flight Club prevail, Paul Hennessy can also claim his seat at the top table.

Larking About, What A Tornado, Locnamon Bridie and Priceless Brandy have all hailed from the Black and Amber kennel and he will bid for a sensational fifth Leger title later tonight. With Clonbrien Treaty claiming responsibility for two victories thus far, Graham Holland is chasing a fourth win in the classic after landing the 2017 running with Clonbrien Hero, while Philip Buckley is another connection hoping to land this event multiple times after the success of Blastoff Billy back in 2018.

The Final Verdict….

There are so many narratives as we head into what is another top-class Irish St. Leger renewal. Of course, Clonbrien Treaty’s bid for three-in-a-row is the headline maker and he is not only bidding for a trio of Leger’s, but should he triumph, he will have also sealed no fewer than five classic deciders after landing the 2023 Con & Annie Kirby Memorial and the 2024 Bresbet Easter Cup.

As so often happens, the trap draw plays an integral role in these big finals and it has again thrown up more questions than answers as to how Clonbrien Treaty can prevail. A trap six draw would have been welcomed with open arms by connections of the fan favourite, however, he will have to negotiate another tricky assignment in trap four. Indeed, the son of Pestana overcame this particular obstacle in the semi finals, however, it wasn’t without drama as he walked from traps before calling upon his explosive early gears as a ‘get out of jail free card’. That said, it is unlikely that Holland’s tracker will trap as poorly two weeks on the trot and he has the invaluable ‘know-how’ in respect of winning big events. As a result, he remains the selection despite the astronomic rise of Hello Diego in this renewal.

The aforementioned is of course the main threat to the crown of Clonbrien Treaty and connections of this runner would have been quietly confident when his name was drawn to run from trap five, sandwiched between Clonbrien Treaty on his inside and kennel companion, Hello Flight, on his outside. ‘Diego’ has really found his trapping boots in recent weeks and although he is unlikely to match his market rival in the early exchanges, connections will hope that he can use Clonbrien Treaty as a buffer to turn in second place. In this eventuality, Hello Diego will be fancied to come through given his sheer power from the halfway mark but this is far from a two-dog affair with threats aplenty that are all capable of writing their own story.

Blastoff Heffo is the beneficiary of a plumb draw in red and he was ultra-impressive in the semis as he flew down the back to finish an eventual second behind Hello Diego. Drombeg Banner could prove the fly in the ointment early on with his early speed and he will bid to give Evan McAuliffe a second major after the triumph of Drombeg Pearl in the 2024 Fonez Galway Oaks, while both Cagey Billy and Flight Club will hope for a little traffic up front in order to capitalize down the back. The former came out the wrong side of a photo-finish defeat in the recent Centenary Agri Tipperary Cup at Thurles for Christopher Delaney, so he would certainly not be begrudged for an event of this magnitude.

Flight Club, meanwhile, is incredibly without a win since debut for Carol O’Riordan, however, his stock has most certainly risen despite that statistic. He too has a chance of nestling into a good position rounding the opening bend and he could be a dark horse at big odds.

A big congratulations is extended to the connections of all finalists in getting this far, and the very best of luck in what has been another terrific renewal. Most importantly, may they all return safe and sound!

Dog with a serious finishing kick which he showed when beating Trap 4 in the opening round in his best run in this competition. One of Philip Buckley’s consistent runners and will be picking off the leaders in the latter stages.

DROMBEG BANNER (M)

Has been very consistent throughout this competition knocking on the door in all rounds. First time to compete in the blue sheet which could make a difference and will also be coming home strong no doubt cheered by Evan McAulliffe.

CAGEY BILLY (M)

May not have won any round of this event but has always kept his rivals on their toes. Probably will be a big price but Christopher Delaney’s runner will be bidding for another late surge hoping for a traffic jam outside.

CLONBRIEN TREATY (W)

This Graham Holand runner has had massive success here at Limerick and is bidding to make history if wins tonight. This James and Muireann Murphy owned three-time classic winner is improving with every round. Not probably his favourite trap but his experience will come into play.

HELLO DIEGO (W)

The only unbeaten finalist in this event and the Paul Hennessy runner is in fine form over the trip. His improved early pace gives him the advantage in a trap he should run well from. Deservingly a favourite and could hand Paul Hynes a classic win on the night.

FLIGHT CLUB (W)

Second of the Hennessy runners is the youngest and least experienced of the pack but is also improving with every round. Enjoys this distance with a very strong run from halfway and any congestion early on could help Carol O’Riordan’s runner take his first win in this event.
