SATURDAY 23RD NOVEMBER

SATURDAY 23RD NOVEMBER
I wish to warmly welcome everyone to Shelbourne Park – the home of Ireland’s richest greyhound event and the historic heartbeat of Irish greyhound racing. This is my first Derby as Chair of the Board of Rásaíocht Con Éireann (RCÉ) and, therefore, it is my huge honour to be able to join colleagues, friends and members of the wider Irish greyhound community for this iconic fixture.
The BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious greyhound racing competition in the country and is considered one of the showpiece events in the international greyhound calendar.
I am delighted to welcome back Virgin Media Television to Shelbourne Park. Ivan Yates and his team of his presenters continue to provide an important national platform for our sport to grow and prosper.
On behalf of the Board, I wish to extend Rásaíocht Con Éireann’s gratitude to our sponsor BoyleSports whose support has ensured the ongoing and future success of this event. The prize money for this year’s final totals €300,000 with a winner’s prize of €125,000, which makes this flagship racing event an attractive proposition for trainers and owners right across the country.
Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium has showcased top tier greyhound racing since 1927 and is affectionately known as the home of Irish Greyhound racing. 97 years on from hosting its inaugural race, the stadium remains a tremendous recreational asset to the people of Dublin and rural Ireland alike.
RCÉ’s ambitious approach to further consolidating the sport of greyhound racing is reflected in its ongoing investment at this venue. The refurbishment of Shelbourne Park is now completed, and the venue is looking majestic with a completely reimagined ground floor, now featuring The Shelbourne Park Sports Bar, 1927 Lounge, South Lotts Terrace Cafe and upgraded Food Hall. These works futureproof the venue and offer plenty of options for business for the year ahead.
The recently established Shelbourne Park Museum and Exhibition space has proven to be a draw for greyhound racing enthusiasts and many of the owners and trainers who have frequented trackside here over the decades. I hope many of the patrons at tonight’s final will take the time to walk through the exhibits which document almost 100 years of greyhound history at this venue.
I wish to thank owners and trainers for their assistance in facilitating the moving of the Derby to November to enable these important works to be completed. I also wish to thank our IRGT Ambassadors Brenda Powderly and Paul Smith and their canine companions Charlie and Jimmy for ensuring all patrons receive a warm welcome to the stadium this evening.
Finally, I want to acknowledge the hard-working members of the Shelbourne Park team for their tireless efforts to ensure this venue always looks its best on and off the track.
I am very much looking forward to sampling the electric atmosphere inside Shelbourne Park as we gather to witness who succeeds last year’s winner, The Other Kobe, in claiming the title.
Is mise le meas,
Pat Flanagan Chairman Rásaíocht Con Éireann
Dear Customer,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the most anticipated event in the Irish greyhound calendar – the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby at the new and wonderfully-refurbished Shelbourne Park.
This is BoyleSports’ eleventh year sponsoring this magnificent event and as Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker, we are very proud and honoured to continue to support Irish greyhound racing and to see the Derby go from strength to strength each year.
It’s been a particularly exciting Derby for me with my own BoyleSports Bob making the final, but we’ve seen some very impressive action over the last few weeks from some top-class dogs, not least the performances of Graham Holland’s Bockos Diamond. He heads the betting by some distance and after an historic, record-breaking win three weeks ago, matched again last week, it’s easy to see why.
However, if greyhound racing has taught me anything over the years, it’s that you need a bit of luck on the night too. I look forward very much to seeing which one of this year’s six finalists will be victorious and be added to an illustrious list of Derby winners.
I’d like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the management and staff of Shelbourne Park, who work tirelessly to make this event a success. Shelbourne Park is now a first-class venue and with twelve races on the card this evening, I look forward to an excellent night of racing.
To the six finalists and their connections – it’s an extraordinary achievement to make it this far and I wish you all the very best of luck. May the best dog win!
Finally, I would like to thank you all for your continued support and valued custom. It is each and every one of you that makes this such a wonderful sport to be involved in. Enjoy the evening.
Yours,
John Boyle

Seven decades since Spanish Battleship did the impossible by capturing a third Irish Derby crown in September 1955, he remains the most legendary name in the annals of Irish greyhound racing.
The O’Connor family have kindly loaned the 1954 Irish Greyhound Derby Final trophy, won by Spanish Battleship in Shelbourne Park. This was the middle year of an historic 3-in-a-row.
2024 marks 70 years since Spanish Battleship’s Derby win and the 1954 trophy will be on display in the Shelbourne Park Museum until Derby Final night on Saturday 23rd November.

Charlie (racing name Razldazl Cha Cha) was born and reared in Kilcolgan Castle in County Galway where he loved meeting visitors and tourists to the castle. He was recently rehomed by the Irish Retired Greyhound Trust (IRGT) and now lives in County Meath near Drogheda. Charlie is a
super friendly chap and just loves meeting people. His best buddy is Buttons a small Jack Russell terrier. Charlie is just a lovely loveable greyhound and during the Boylesports Greyhound Derby he is ready and waiting to give lots of ‘hugs’ for free.
Jimmy (racing name Glenfircal). Jimmy is a super friendly chap who retired earlier this year. He now lives in Mornington Co Meath were he enjoys walks on the beach and a doggy paddle in the sea when the weather is warm. Jimmy loves to meet and greet everyone and give plenty of free hugs. When Jimmy is not posing for photos, he loves to watch the racing action on the big screens in the new Sports Bar here at Shelbourne Park.

Graham aiming to join the greats on 4 wins
Graham Holland has been the trainer to follow in Irish greyhound racing for many years and will have another chance to rewrite the record books this evening when sending out Cheap Sandwiches and Bockos Diamond in the Derby decider.
Graham currently sits on three Irish Derby wins but could create history if either of his finalists, who are the top two in the betting, were to come home in front. His first Derby success came in 2016 with Rural Hawaii providing him with his greatest night in the sport, while three years later it was the turn of Lenson Bocko in 2019. He completed his hat trick the following year with Newinn Taylor.
If Cheap Sandwiches or Bockos Diamond win this evening, he will join two of the true greats of greyhound racing, Tom Lynch and Gay McKenna, on four wins. Lynch trained the great Spanish Battleship to three Derby wins in the 1950s before claiming the last of his four wins in 1967 with Russian Gun, while McKenna’s final success came just over 50 years ago with Catsrock Daisy winning the 1972 decider. His other winners were Ballyowen Chief in 1965, Always Proud in 1966 and Monalee Pride in 1970.
Incidentally, the 1954 trophy won by Spanish Battleship and the 1972 trophy won by Catsrock Daisy are on show in the Shelbourne Park Museum on the ground floor.
Will Diamond be the hottest favourite of all time?
Sponsors Boylesports have introduced Bockos Diamond their 3-10 favourite for tonight’s Derby decider. If he were to be returned at that price, he would be the hottest favourite in the long history of the blue riband. Indeed, there is a suspicion he will go to traps an even shorter price.
But what was the hottest favourite before tonight? Well, a name that is always mentioned in the conversation of the all-time greats is Spanish Battleship, the three-time Derby winner. He claimed his first Derby crown at Harold’s Cross in 1953 and his last in 1955 at the same venue.
His middle victory came here at Shelbourne Park, however, and on that night, the Tom Lynch trained superstar was sent to traps the 4-11 favourite. The extra weight of long odds-on favouritism didn’t concern him and he ran out a comfortable three length winner over Dignity in 29.64.
Will Bockos Diamond also make light work of his task and emerge the shortest priced Derby winner of all time? The odds suggest he will.
Can A Lucky Julie end drought for trap four?
A Lucky Julie is ranked as one of the two outsiders for tonight’s Derby
decider with sponsors Boylesports and, were she to win, it would be something of a shock. It would also be an overdue winner for trap four. You have to go all the way back to 2011 to find the last winner to wear the black jacket. On that occasion, it was Razldazl George that came out on top for Dolores Ruth.
In contrast, the orange jacket of trap five has been the most prolific. Fans of Boylesports Bob will be glad to hear that trap five has won nine Derby finals since the turn of the century. Coincidentally, prior to the 2022 Derby winner Born Warrior, the previous trap five winner came in 2019 when Lenson Bocko raced to victory. He happened to be partly owned by Graham Box, Bev Lochead and Austin Whelan, who also happen to own the hot favourite tonight, Bockos Diamond. He lines out in six and is aiming to become the first winner to wear the stripes since Newinn Taylor in 2020. He too was trained by Graham Holland.
Bob and News aiming to end Derby hoodoo?
So many truly exceptional greyhounds have won the Derby through the years. Many have gone on to have successful stud careers but not since 1969 has a Derby winner sired a Derby champion.
The sire in question was Always Proud. One of four Derby winners for Gay McKenna, he took the greatest prize in 1966. Just three years later, he was sire of the 1969 Derby champion, the Ger McKenna trained Own Pride.
Incredibly, the double was only ever achieved twice. The Billy Quinn trained Tanist captured the 1940 Derby before siring Daring Flash to win the 1947 Derby. Tanist was one of the foundation sires of modern greyhound racing.
Coincidentally, both Own Pride and Daring Flash claimed their Derby victories at Harold’s Cross, while their respective sires did so at Shelbourne Park. It means that 2017 champion Good News is bidding to become the first Derby winner to sire a Derby winner at Shelbourne Park. He is represented by his son Boylesports Bob in tonight’s final.
A new Derby winning sire will emerge
Whatever the result, there will be a new Derby winning sire this evening. None of the sires on show have thrown a Derby winner before, although Droopys Sydney, who has two finalists, is amongst the best and most prolific sires of all time.
There is nothing he hasn’t achieved with the exception of siring a Derby champion. He passed on at a great age in August of this year but his legacy continues to live on. If either Callaway Knegare or Singalong Dolly were to win tonight’s decider, it would complete a full set for one of the truly great sires.
The other sires on show include Burgess Bucks, Ballymac Bolger, Good News and Dorotas Wildcat and each of the quartet have also made a big impact in their time at stud.
It was more than obvious from the outset that this year’s Boylesports Irish Greyhound Derby was packed with exceptionally talented greyhounds, including litter brothers March On Freddie and the hottest ante-post favourite in recent history, Bockos Diamond.
Both were on fire in the opening round. UK raider March On Freddie was majestic as he dominated in a 29.19 return, while Bockos Diamond gave warning to his rivals that he was going to be a real force through the classic, winning with a flawless display in 29.23.
Graham Holland, Paul Hennessy and Pat Guilfoyle had more than one winner with the first named sending out a four-timer. Holland’s other winners included Bombay Pat, who posted 29.34, while Untold Dollar and Clona Duke also impressed.
Paul Hennessy had a hat trick over the two nights, although the standout was Boylesports Bob, who posted 29.25, showing all his power in the process. Jaytee Craze and Dynamic Force also won well for Hennessy.
Carrick Aldo displayed huge early speed to win with a 29.42 return, while Seven Beach and Tarsna Maasai also did everything right from the front.
There was also a noteworthy display from Singalong Dolly. The Cesarewitch winner was a surprise absentee from the opening round draw but came in as a reserve to dominate in 29.39. Just a spot slower was Ballinabola Jim. The massive tracker had been in tremendous form in the previous weeks and again impressed, coming home clear in 29.40.
If the opening round was good, the second was exceptional. There were countless massive performances but that of Bockos Diamond really did set the standard. The Derby favourite absolutely flew in a facile 29.03 success, giving further warning that he was the greyhound to beat.
Ballinabola Jim also continued his incredible run of form, posting a career best effort as he dominated to stop the clock in a sizzling 29.07.
Jennifer O’Donnell, who was seeking a third Derby win in a row, sent out Scooby Pacemaker and Seven Beach to impress.
Scooby Pacemaker doesn’t often lead around the turn so, when he did, it came as no surprise that he clocked a rapid 29.16. Seven Beach displayed all his many qualities in a 29.37 victory.
After a scare in the opening round, Cheap Sandwiches was pretty much foot-perfect as he ran out a ready 29.20 scorer.
There was also a big return to form from English Derby champion De Lahdedah. Liam Dowling’s star was at his very sharpest at trap rise and emerged an easy winner in 29.30.
A few new names threw their name in the hat also. Bubbly Shadow returned to his best form to score in 29.24, while Da Bold Falcon flew home to win in 29.39. Grangeclare Lady, a daughter of 2021 winner Susie Sapphire, was electric in her heat, shooting clear to win in 29.43.
Oaks champion A Lucky Julie followed up an encouraging opening round defeat with a victory a week later. She would storm home to win in 29.54, highlighting her wellbeing. Others to impress included Bombay Pat and Beanos Podge.
As always, the remaining competitors were in action on the one night for the first time in the classic in the third round and Bockos Diamond took the opportunity to create history when lining out a red-hot favourite for the opening heat.
Showing the most incredible pace and fluency, he was absolutely untouchable as he came home three lengths clear of Carrick Aldo in a track record breaking 28.94. He became only the second
greyhound to smash the magical 29 second barrier, again justifying his billing as the one to beat in the classic.
To highlight the strength of his run, runner-up Carrick Aldo was the second fastest qualifier from the entire third round.
Flying female Undulation was the next fastest heat winner for the Newry maestro, Brendan Matthews, as she emerged a ready winner in 29.16, while Cheap Sandwiches again displayed real professionalism to win in 29.18.
Bombay Pat maintained his unbeaten record in the Derby with a fine display. He would lead before the third turn to see off Short Grip in 29.30. Ballinabola Jim also preserved his unbeaten record in the classic with a fine half length success over Da Bold Falcon in 29.39.
Untold Dollar was also starting to catch the attention of a few, winning in 29.34. There were a couple of messy contests with Ballymac Briar emerging triumphant in 29.68 and Extra Gain winning in 29.82.
By quarter final night, the narrative was well and truly established. Bockos Diamond was the greyhound to beat but there were a whole host of exceptionally fast greyhounds waiting in the wings should he make any mistakes.
All four heats were packed with quality and each of the four heat winners were pretty much paw-perfect. These included the hot favourite Bockos Diamond. He would overcome a slightly tardy start to lead before the turn. The Graham Holland trained superstar would eventually race clear to see off Callaway Knegare in 29.19.
However, honour of going fastest went to the David Murray trained Carrick Aldo. The 2023 Irish Sprint Cup champion shot into a commanding advantage to halfway before holding the late charge of Boylesports Bob in 29.15.
Bombay Pat displayed all his early speed to win in 29.19, lowering the colours of Ballinabola Jim in the process, while UK raider March On Freddie progressed in third.
A Lucky Julie was also in tremendous form, showing real strength and determination to pick up Cheap Sandwiches to win by a half length in 29.31.
The Virgin Media cameras were on site to see the Derby field halved for the final time in the semi-finals and those tuning in were treated to another masterclass from Bockos Diamon as he matched his own track record with one of the most perfect displays ever seen at Shelbourne Park.
Exploding from traps, he would leave his rivals stranded on the way to a facile five and a half-length victory in a stunning 28.94. The battle for the remaining qualifying places went right down to the wire. Carrick Aldo had given chase from the early yards with Bombay Pat charging into the third turn to go third but both found themselves under severe pressure as they turned for home.
Callaway Knegare and A Lucky Julie were in full stride and on a mission to make the decider. Callaway Knegare had room up the fence and flew up the straight to grab second with A Lucky Julie coming wide and fast to take third.
The second heat saw Cheap Sandwiches, a kennel companion to Bockos Diamond, win in very similar fashion from the same trap three draw. He too was razor sharp at boxes and would make every inch to get the better of Singalong Dolly by four lengths in 29.13.
Singalong Dolly was left second when Ballinabola Jim lost his stride down the back straight. Much like the opening heat, the battle for third would go right down to the wire. Boylesports Bob dug in deep to hold the fast-finishing Da Bold Falcon, in turn completing the Derby field.

This lady has long been a talent. As a pup she reached the semi-finals of the Juvenile Derby and the final of the Galway Oaks, while emerging a tremendous winner of the Puppy Oaks. She returned this year in even better form, claiming the Champion Bitch Stake at Thurles before claiming classic success in the Cesarewitch at Mullingar. She wasn’t finished there. Ahead of a seasonal rest, she ran up the Tipperary Cup at Thurles. A true all-rounder, she has both the pace and power to get involved.

The Lee Strand 550 at Tralee was the perfect springboard for this talented tracker to announce his arrival on the track scene. He would eventually finish second in the final but had given notice that he was going to be a serious performer. It took some time for him to produce his best at Shelbourne but a return to 550yds did the track. He finished a close second to Bockos Diamond in the TIME Greyhound Nutrition Open 550 before targeting the Derby. Improving with each round he is a real contender this evening.

A third ever finalist for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Melia, she looked a prospect last year but moved to a higher level in 2024, finishing a close second in the Select Stakes at Waterford before journeying back to Dublin for the Irish Oaks. A series of big runs saw her get to the decider where she came from a mile off the pace to dead-heat with Fleadh Saraide. It was obvious from the very earliest days of his career that this powerful galloper was set for big things. Luck wasn’t always his ally in his debut season but he returned a man in 2024, reaching the final of the Easter Cup before embarking on an English Derby challenge. He would display huge pace to finish runner-up in the classic before taking a break ahead of his Irish Derby bid.
