REPORT FOR ACTIVITIES Name of the organization: Go Green Skopje – Citizens association for sustainable development and nature protection Project name: Platform for youth sustainability Realization period: January – June 2012 The goal of the project is to connect, educate and activate young people on the issues of sustainable development and environmental protection. The Platform serves as a space for young people to learn together and take an active role in the society. The activities realized from the Platform, agreed and supported by the Embassy, were the following: 1. Press conference Date: 1st March 2012 Location: EU Info Centre - Skopje Description: The press conference announced the continuation of the partnership for the Platform and introduced the topic for the upcoming conference on 3rd and 4th March. The topic that H.E. Mr. Jean-Claude Schlumberger and the President of Go Green, Mr. Antonio Jovanovski, spoke was: “The role of young people in creating a sustainable society”. Enclosed in the CD you can find the photos. Results: The event was attended by 2 TV stations, 1 newspaper and 3 internet portals. Enclosed you can find the media snapshots with the published articles. 2. Youth conference “United for tomorrow – zero waste Macedonia” Date: 3rd and 4th March 2012 Location: Economic Faculty – Skopje (Ss. Cyril and Methodius) Description: The goal of the conference was to connect and activate young people in protecting the environment and taking active role in shaping a sustainable society. The main debate was on topic “The role of young people in creating a sustainable society”. Lectures and workshops from professors and trainers were held on the topics of: global warming and climate change, sustainable development, leadership and activism, renewable energy sources and waste management. NGO’s “Lets do it Macedonia” and “OXO” joined the Platform as new members. Enclosed you can find the materials, agenda and photos from the event.

Results: Total 230 people applied for the conferece. On the first day (3rd March) 210 people participated and on the second day (4th March) 182 young people participated. 157 of the participants were high school students coming from 8 schools and 42 were faculty students coming from 5 different faculties. Furthermore, there were 6 pupils from 2 primary schools and 5 adults. This event has been one of the largest youth events organized by the NGO sector in Republic of Macedonia. The event was covered by 2 national TV stations and 4 internet portals. 3. Seminar: Energy independence by 2020 Date: 24th March 2012 Location: Economic Faculty - Skopje (Ss. Cyril and Methodius) Description: The goals of the seminar were to create awareness and challenge young people to learn and debate about energy independence in the European Union, to engage media’s attention about energy independence situation in Macedonia and to activate young people in projects promoting renewable energy sources. The opening ceremony of the event included a key note speech from H.E. Mr. Ambassador Jean-Claude Schlumberger and official signing of the declaration, welcoming two new NGO members of the Platform (Youth Can and AIESEC Prilep). Youth debate followed on the topic: “Europe can achieve energy independence by 2020”. After the debate, lecture on the topic “Building a sustainable energy system” followed, explaining the energy situation in Macedonia. Enclosed you can find the materials and photos from the event. Results: 160 applications received, 75 participated on the event, 3 national TV stations and 3 internet portals covered the event. Date: 5th June 2012 - UN World Environment Day Location: French institute - Skopje Description: The debate marked the UN World Environment day where young people debated on using “internet vs paper” as learning methods. The debate was opened by the host of the event Mr. Jean-Yves Lavoir who addressed the high school students and continued with an address of Mr. Antonio Jovanovski. There were 2 debate teams, one holding the side for using internet and computers, and the others for using traditional paper books for learning. The event was the theoretical part of marking the UN World Environment day. The practical part was collection of used paper from 100 primary schools with cooperation of Media Print Macedonia (the biggest national newspaper agency).

Results: There were 32 young people present on the debate coming from 4 different high schools. The event was covered by the Macedonian National TV station, Radio Skopje, Radio MOF, 1 national newspaper and 4 internet portals. 5. Debate: “Building a sustainable energy system in Macedonia” Date: 18th June 2012 Location: EU Info Centre - Skopje Description: The event represented the official opening of the “EU sustainable energy week 2012” in Macedonia. EU Sustainable Energy Week is Europe’s key event for promoting more sustainable energy future. After H.E. Mr. Jean-Claude Schlumberger gave the key note speech, the President of the Green Party, Mrs. Liljana Popovska made her address. Furthermore, Mrs. Iskra Stojkovska, President of environmental NGO Front 21/42 had her speech. The topics covered by the speakers were: EU directives and Macedonian legislation, Law implementation, present situation and challenges, success stories in practice, priorities and solutions for the country. The conclusions and recommendations from the debate were sent to all relevant stakeholders as policy brief papers. Results: The event was attended by 42 participants coming from different sectors (private, NGO, university, municipalities, state agencies). The event got huge media coverage with 5 national TV stations, 3 newspapers, 3 radio stations, 7 internet portals. Please find enclosed in the CD, photos and other documents. The events organized with the support of the French Embassy directly involved more than 400 people and indirectly reached more than 500.000 people through the national media TV stations, newspapers, radio stations and internet portals. Education and activating young people around the issues of environment is the most relevant theme for building a sustainable society. Through organizing these events we can witness bigger media interest and increased number of young people participation in local and national projects. The results from each event convince us that we are doing the right thing and we believe that the Platform’s activities should continue in the future. We are truly grateful for the on-going support and cooperation and we are hoping to continue the partnership in the next years.
