To all our associate companies and nonprofit mission around the world. Go Green Kids & Parents Magazine welcomes your participation in our walk into the journey of restoration. Sometimes in life we can only see our own sustainability, but our mission is to include all faces, shapes and sizes, companies, private and non. We are all a part and residences that are located in the vastness of the world, with many locations to fill the tapestry of green with the like minds of sustainability; waiting to be planted and sowed by their gardeners around the world. In any language, any color, any size, any age; “Green” is the gardens that will join us together to find the many solutions and attributes to go hand in hand to a better day. We will eventually leave our legacy one day and bestow upon our children all that we have worked for so diligently. In this journey of green I find there is a great big world that is in need. In this journey of life we have been given a great

responsibility to honor and care for what was entrusted from the very beginning of time. We must all recognize that our residency is but a moment in time, to he earth we began, and this will be the designation eventually. The destiny of our children around the world will inherit our habits and our concerns, with hard work and dedication their will be your children and mine, gathering many with the footprints we leave behind. Walk softly, speak loud, be mindful of what you leave behind, there is a child somewhere watching and waiting to see what they will do, to become you. Leave a heart filled with green, with traces of good deeds; there you will find many children who will become parents like you and me. Being Green is a state of mind, carried over into the actions and works so that in time-the world will remember “We” all pulled together for this “Green” thing to last a lifetime.... He made us rulers over the works of HIS hands; HE put everything under OUR feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth-Psalm8:6 1

Fit For a Kid

Staying active for children By Naima Woodson

These days, raising healthy children can be quite a task, for both the health-conscious and not so healthconscious parent alike. With so many unhealthy temptations in our environment, it may seem that we’re in constant competition to keep our families on track. While we all support our kids’ physical activities and nutrition goals in different ways, what matters most is that our kids know that we encourage their involvement in constructing the family’s health and fitness goals and activities. Helping our children create goals for their own health is equally as important as our own fitness goals, when you understand that health and wellness begins at home. By involving your children in creating your long term fitness goals as a family, you’ll be sure to

find and commit to activities that will be fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. Keep in mind that for optimum health, children should get at least an hour of physical activity a day. The activity, however, does not need to be all at once, and can easily be spread throughout the day. It’s amazing how doing simple things such as taking a stroll around the neighborhood, or planting an herb or vegetable garden can help promote good health in kids. With minimal effort, you’ll be cultivating a life-long love of fitness with your children, and reducing their risk of becoming overweight, having high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.

Simple ways to keep your family active and healthy... 9

!

• Plan activities everyone can do such as hiking, biking or swimming. • Plan for healthy meals… having an abundance of fresh [or frozen] fruits and veggies on hand conveniently makes a meal healthier with minimal effort. • Go outside and play! Go for an evening stroll before or after dinner. • Replace screen time with active time. Take up a new activity or sport of equal interest with your children. • Make health-conscious choices when eating out. Many places offer a ‘healthy substitution’. • Involve the kids in compiling a fitness "wish list". Allow them to choose activities that they actually want to do, and choose from their list twice a week.

Helping our children create goals for their own health is equally as important as our own fitness goals...

There are so many benefits to these simple choices, which will result in better health and a better quality of life for you and your family. You’ll find that your success will build momentum and continue to motivate your family to stay active and well. Your health is the basis of all things meaningful! www.fitforakidla.com | 888-557-7088 | info@fitforakidla.com | facebook.com/fitforakid |@fitforakidla

Your Carbon Footprint: What Is It? By definition, a carbon footprint is “the total set of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product, or person.” This means that if you live a lifestyle that requires the use of a greater amount of energy and fossil fuels that form greenhouse gases through combustion, the larger your impact on the environment and your carbon footprint will be. Your carbon footprint consists of many activities that can be far less obvious. This may include the fossil fuels used to transport the food that you buy at your local grocery store, or the energy used to dispose of the waste produced in your household. All this comes into account when trying to make an accurate estimate of what impact is left behind by your daily activities and choices.

New York to Florida As a child, I never really considered teaching as a profession. I loved to play school with my little brother on the chalkboard my father made for us, but I never viewed it as a lifelong dream or calling. It was not until I was inspired by my mother when she went back to finish her college schooling in the education field that I really thought about being a teacher. What a gift this inspiration has turned out to be. Moving to South Florida 5 years ago from Upstate New York was quite the culture shock. Teaching in this metropolitan area is much different than in rural New York, and I truly find the daily challenges to be extremely rewarding. One major difference that I can see between the educational opportunities in Florida is the ability to instill the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in my students. In New York, people spend the majority of the year in doors due to the climate. This is not the case in Florida, and it lends the perfect teachable opportunities for me to emphasize and educated on healthy living. Working out and eating healthy is essential in today’s day and age. Requiring my students to make small decisions, such as the snack they eat, the physical activity they expose themselves to at recess, or the choices they make in the lunch line, on a daily basis can have a greater long term effect on living a healthy lifestyle for years to come. !

Chipping In To Save The Planet

“The way we treat our planet is a reflection of our own compassion, our wise use of our minds, our acumen, responsible reasoning, and our ability to act out of higher consciousnessâ€?

By Aymeric Maudous

GoGreen has always been in the forefront of highlighting all efforts which consciously confront environmental challenges, and promote global perseverance in enhancing sustainability. These challenges are numerous in our present times, particularly with no real effort by governments due to political whims. In addition, the global economy is in the doldrums at the present, and this gives the misperception that the environment can take a back seat. This is an absolute fallacy, and need addressing on all fronts. We need to will this planet to our children in a responsible manner, and this starts with efforts now. The Arcadia International Environmental Film Festival (Arcadia Festival) is one such responsible effort. This will be launched at the end of the year simultaneously in over 25 cities worldwide. The intention is to

showcase at least 15 movies, with additional short environmental documentaries. The Focus of the Arcadia Festival will be on environmental protection, food

security, social inequalities, climate change, pollution and eco-activism. The aim is to enlighten and empower individuals and communities globally to take actions, individually and together, which promote responsible and sustainable lives.

annually to showcase businesses and organizations which are in the business of Eco, sustainable or organic wares and services. Aymeric believes in good, honest and ethical trading of service suppliers to meet their equally eco conscious consumers.

This great festival has as its founder a man who is consistent, persevering and visionary in his actions regarding sustainability and the environment: Aymeric Maudous. He is the brains, of course with great assistance of likeminded committed beings of the Festival, and is in the process of raising funds for Arcadia International Environmental Film Festival. Aymeric wears the hat of an all round Ecopreneur, and has laid to green whatever he touches! His credits include creating EcoXpo, an uplifting event which takes place

This unyielding passion for nature was imbued in Aymeric at a very young age when he enjoyed picking the luscious fruits and vegetables on his grandfather's organic farm in South West France. His own tiny plot "loaned" to him by grand dad was also a refuge for all sorts of wounded creatures, from snails with broken shells to birds with broken wings. This instilled responsibility for all living things in Aymeric, and can be seen in his endeavors until now. Aymeric is grateful for the opportunity to have completed his Masters in Environmental Management in Sydney, Australia. This further fuelled his drive to now action this passion for environmental responsibility and ethical living vis-avis the environment. He started with Bonjour Baby, an online site which promotes and makes purchasing

parents would generate using eco nappies, and how much healthier their kids would feel after eating organic baby food… It inspired me to want to do more and more to reach people.” Following this brave venture, Aymeric launched EcoXpo in 2010. To take this vision of responsible living further, Aymeric Maudous has now launched the Arcadia International Environmental Film Festival. This non-for-profit project encapsulates a philosophy of protecting our planet for all, where our thinking and actions create more ecologically viable communities, both locally and globally. ! His drive to reduce “eco-footprints to ecofingerprints” comes from his passion for the environment and films which he goes and see 3-4 times a week. “I have always been fascinated by the power of film and documentaries. They sometimes transport you in a world of unexplored feelings and sometimes make you realize that you are not alone. My breakthrough with this project came after watching a documentary which went completely under the radar about water. I remember some of the facts: of all the water on earth, only 0.003% is suitable for drinking, some villagers in India kidnapped women from neighboring tribes to gain access to water holes. I left the movie deeply moved and started to change my own habits at home by collecting the warm-up water from my showers to use in my washing machine and plants. I then realized the impact of my actions and thought to myself ‘wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone saw this movie?’ So slowly, the Arcadia Festival came to my mind.” ! Aymeric also remembers that solutions to our actual environmental challenges can be and will be found collectively. As Yann Arthus- Bertrand, a French

photographer and one of the world's leading environmentalists puts it: "The Solutions, we will find them together". Yann is one of Arcadia Festival's screening partners. The project is gathering a lot of attention, and has already received the support of leading environmentalists such as Indira Naidoo, Tim Silverwood and David Kennett, all based currently in Australia.

WORKING TOGETHER !

To put this immensely important project together requires working together on this shared vision with all concerned, from responsible businesses to environmental organizations, right up to individual commitments.

Aymeric has already shared his project on a platform called PlanBig which allows community members from all around the world to contribute with their skills and know-how to the project. This has “allowed the project to be under constant feedback from other members who come up with suggestions, encouragements and ideas. I like the fact that a lot of people from all around the world feel the need to be involved.” When I asked Aymeric what were his 3 top things he desperately needed at this stage he replied: “First of we need a quirky logo for the Festival, then we’ll need a brand new website and above all we need financial community support.” Aymeric has also positioned the Arcadia Festival onto Pozible in order to give responsible communities and individuals around the World a chance to make a difference. This constant search for partnership is really something that struck us here at GoGreen, since the Arcadia Festival is a new means for NGOs involved in environmental protection to connect with each other, and then facilitate linkage with communities around the world in other related areas.“We need to work together”, Aymeric seems to be saying all the time. “The way we treat our planet is 14

Children's Fears By: Eva L. Lawton

Whether or not we subscribe fully to that school of psychology which claims that the child is born with no fears except those caused by a loud noise or loss of support, we will probably admit that by the time he has reached the age of 3 or 4 years, he is burdened with a quantity and variety of definitely acquired fears. In most cases, he is afraid of the dark, timid of strangers, subject to bad dreams and occasionally to night terrors, fearsome of animals, both large and small. By the time

he is 9 or 10 years old, he may have added to this list, secretiveness, jealousy, and a feeling of discouragement and inferiority. If one looks these facts squarely in the face, it is hard to attribute this state of affairs to other causes than faulty home or school environment, and faulty parental attitudes and training by nurses, teachers, or parents. From these childish phases, is graduated the adult who is restless, unstable, hypersensitive and neurotic.

Early Years Important

B

More and more is it being recognized that the neuroses and complexes of adult life have their origin in the early years of the child's mental and emotional plasticity. The mother who is so afraid of exposing her child to infection or contagion that she tries to build a wall of security around him by depriving him of the normal companionship of other children, and the nurse who puts a protecting arm around her young charge at the approach of a dog, are both creating feelings of insecurity and timidity. The child will

immediately sense a danger from which it is being guarded. Rather should he be fired with courage to face what he must eventually face if he is to live in the world as it is. This feeling of insecurity seems to be at the base of most fears and extends from the field of the physical into the field of the emotional and psychic. The child's fear of the unknown is exemplified by his fear of the dark, his timidity of strangers and of animals. In the adolescent it takes on the form of fear of being misunderstood and unappreciated. In the adult it leads to bigotry and prejudice—the outcome of his hostile attitude toward that which is strange and foreign to him, whether in ideas or in people. Proper Habit Formation The great European psychologist, Dr. Alfred Adler enumerates three types of children who manifest feelings of inferiority: (1) the child born with defective organs, which cause irritation and discomfort; (2) the "spoiled" child, who is entirely dependent upon a second person (usually the mother) for his happiness and security; (3) the child who is neglected or unwelcome, who seeks satisfaction by becoming a problem to those responsible for him, thus drawing attention to himself. If as parents or teachers we have to combat fears or feelings of inferiority in a child, it is both unwise and unfair to try to ridicule or bully him out of them. Our first task is to get at the fundamental causes, to trace back to the physical or emotional difficulty which is at the base. Where we have created a feeling of helplessness and insecurity, we must build up a courageousness, a facing of situations, self-control and the child's mastery of himself and his environment. This is not difficult if begun early in life, but a most Herculean task if begun after lack of self-confidence and complexes of various kinds have taken hold of the child, and habits of morbidity have become set. Jessica Alba & The Honest Company Set Out To Change The World...One Diaper At A Time New Company Launch a Unique, Eco-Friendly Product Line & Service LOS ANGELES: Today, founders Jessica Alba, Christopher Gavigan, Brian Lee and Sean Kane — Quisque Massa

announce the launch of The Honest Company, an eco-friendly line of family essentials offered through a monthly subscription service at Honest.com. Created for parents by parents, The Honest Company founders say they are committed to making safe, sustainable products more convenient, beautiful and affordable. "I've spent way too many hours researching products and driving around trying to find safer, ecofriendly options for my kids," exclaimed Jessica Alba, President and founder. "I knew that most people didn't have that kind of time, nor the means to pay the premium prices. We had to make it easier." After tirelessly trying out products from all over the world, Hollywood mom Jessica Alba, renowned environmentalist, author, and former Healthy Child Healthy World CEO Christopher 15

Gavigan, along with business partners ShoeDazzle.com founder Brian Lee and PriceGrabber.com executive Sean Kane, decided to take matters into their own hands. "We were all frustrated trying to find products for our own families that were not only safe, but that actually worked," said Gavigan, founder and Chief Product Officer. "I have been hearing similar complaints from parents for the past ten years of my career, so we decided to try to put an end to it – to create some healthy, innovative solutions." They surveyed moms around the country to find out what essential products all families universally need, and launching with a focused product line of diapers, wipes, bath/skin care, and household cleaning products all made from totally natural, non-toxic ingredients and packaged using modern designs. The products are curated into personalized bundles that are automatically shipped every month, and parents can try a FREE Discovery Kit, that includes a sample pack of diapers and wipes, or trial-sized versions of the bath, skin and cleaning products. It's an easy process, and members at Honest.com can purchase a monthly supply of non-toxic stylish diapers competitively priced at less than $20 a week, and can also choose a monthly supply of the body care and home cleaning essentials for under $9 a week. "Parents have so many other issues to worry about beyond shopping for daily essentials," says Brian Lee, founder and Chairman of The Honest Company. "With our easy monthly service, before the thought can cross their mind, a package of amazing family products is delivered to their doorstep." The founders say the initial product suite and service is just the beginning of a much bigger vision that responds to the growing baby care and product needs of today's family, their need for community, and their desire to engage with brands. "Fundamentally, we want to be an honest family brand," says Sean Kane, founder and General Manager, "to be a brand that is a family and treats everyone like family." From giving back (a portion of every dollar The Honest Company earns goes to Baby2Baby, an organization that supplies families in need with baby gear) to claiming their customer support team is more like personal assistants, could they really be on to something new? 16

habits in children

ICEDfruitcups Many lifetime habits are formed at home in early childhood. Parents can confer a great favor on children by using good sense, patience, and tact in teaching children to eat when, what, and as they should. Their health and much of their future happiness may depend on this influence, properly directed.

• • • • • • • • • •

Have meals at regular times. Make them pleasant parts of the daily program. Make the food tasty and serve it in an attractive way. Let young children have their own eating utensils. Allow thirty minutes for a meal. If it is not eaten in that time, take it away. Let the child see you eat (and enjoy) what you expect him to eat. If the child bolts his food, serve only a little at a time; then let him wait awhile for more. Try new foods occasionally. If not acceptable the first time, try again. Start early with the essentials of good table manners.

Things To Avoid

MELONCARROTS BANANAS

Things To Do

Don't allow eating between meals unless for some special reasons, and then only as your doctor directs. Don't talk about fussy eating before the child. Don't suggest that there is such a thing as a poor appetite. Don't worry about the child's eating. If you must, don't let him know it. Don't urge a child to eat when he is overtired or, if you see what may be signs of illness coming on. Don't urge him to eat more than he wants just "to clean up the plate." Don't feed him after he is old enough to feed himself. Don't coax, threaten, bribe, or force a child to eat.

That's where you come in. Make healthy snacks easily available by packing them in their lunchboxes or backpacks or by having them visible and ready-to-eat at home. If you're at home after school, your youngster might enjoy helping you make a creative snack like ants on a log (celery topped with peanut butter and raisin "ants"), egg boats (hardboiled egg wedges topped with a cheese sail), or fruit kabobs. Older kids may enjoy a fruit smoothie, minipitas with hummus dip, or whole-grain crackers topped with cheese and pear slices. Older kids often like making their own snacks, so provide the ingredients and a few simple instructions. If dinner is just around the corner, consider allowing a "first course," such as a small salad or side vegetable while you finish preparing the family meal. For those nights when dinner is hours away, you could opt for a more substantial snack such as half a sandwich or a quesadilla made with a whole-wheat tortilla, low-fat cheese, and salsa warmed in the microwave. Nothing too complicated, though. A good snack should take more time to eat than it does to prepare! If your child goes to an after-school program or to a caregiver's house, find out if snacks are served. If so, what's typically offered? If you don't like what you hear, suggest alternatives or just pack an extra snack your child can eat after school. Easyto-pack snack options include trail mix, nuts, low-sugar whole grain cereal, whole-grain pretzels or crackers, fresh or dried fruit, and cut-up vegetables. What if your child comes home to an empty house? Again, the best strategy is to leave something healthy front and center on the kitchen counter or in the refrigerator. A hungry child, like a hungry adult, is likely to take the path of least resistance. Mary L. Gavin, MD The Nemours Foundation/Kids Health Reprinted with Permission

It does no harm for a well child to miss a meal. The child's likes and dislikes depend much on you. Food fussiness is never inherited, but is often imitated. There are some foods and some children that just can't get together. It may not be stubbornness that makes a child consistently refuse something you think is good for him. Find a substitute for this article rather than get all stirred up about it. Make every effort to keep peace in the family, if for no other reason, because it is a great aid to everybody's digestion. 17 Source:What to Tell the Public About Health. Eight Ways To Go Green

1) Use the power of the sun to make electricity and light up your world.

By: Jeffrey Riley

This article covers eight ways to go green that you can implement right now. You can also save money with these ideas as well as going green. The concept of going green is not new, but it has caught the attention of just about everyone. Even if you donʼt believe that human activity is causing global warming, it is still a good idea to reduce, reuse, and recycle. If nothing else, we canʼt continue to fill up the earth with our waste.

2) Use the power of the sun to cool your attic. You can get a solar powered attic fan that does not use electricity, but it will run and take the hot air out of your attic. This in turn will help lower your cost to cool your house

3) Buy flexible solar panels and install them on your roof or make panels in your yard. You can do this yourself or hire a contractor to hook solar panels to batteries that will run the electrical needs of your home. You can save money this way and you can pay yourself back in less time than you think.

4) Bottled water is very wasteful with 90% of the cost going to make the bottle. Yes, a $1.00 bottle of water costs 90 cents for the bottle. Then, you throw away the bottle and it becomes trash or fills up lands fills.Get a bottle that you can reuse no matter where you are.

5) Filter your own water with a water filter pitcher or a filter on your faucet. Anyone can afford a water filter of some kind. Water filter pitchers can cost less than $10.00 and they will save the use of hundreds of bottles of water. Once you get the filtered water, put it in your own bottle and reduce your cost to drink water and save the environment (even just a little bit).

6)Go green with your pets. You can take care of your pets much better with green methods. Get flea and tick sprays made with natural ingredients that actually kill the fleas and ticks to break the cycle of the pestʼs life. These treatments can be applied over and over because they do not harm your petʼs skin. You can also get organic food that works better with your petʼs digestive system. 7) Going green means more than just changing your environment. It is good to have filtered water and solar lights but you need to take care of yourself. You need to get rest, exercise, and eat the right foods.

8) Give green gifts. It sounds simple but what does it mean? Many businesses use recycled items to make new ones. For example, there are artisans who use newspaper and other types of paper to make plates, pitchers, saucers, and vases. These items look great and seem like they are made of ceramic rather than paper.

"The world was burning and all the animals were running from the fire in terror. Then, a lion turned around and noticed a hummingbird dipping it’s beak into the water and flying over the burning embers again and again. The lion laughed and shouted at the hummingbird: “You are so little, what are you doing?” The hummingbird simply answered: “What I can.” With that the lion paused, turned around, and began to help the hummingbird; soon the other animals joined in. Eventually the fire was put out and the natural balance of the Earth was restored." - Author Unknown

Positive Parenting Oops! I Really Lost My Temper With My Kids, What Now? Ever blown your top to your children, only to regret it ten minutes later?

want to state the bleeding obvious, but constant sudden outbursts of anger are a sign that all is not right

Silly question, it By: Michael Grose happens to us all no matter how wellbehaved our kids or placid and patient we are. At times the general strains and stresses of life wear us down so our emotional responses don’t match children’s behaviors. Or rather, their less than perfect behavior doesn’t warrant the screaming response that you have provided. So what do you do if you with the world. It may mean taking a break, getting some have blown your top and given your children an additional help with your kids or even getting some absolute verbal blast with professional counseling to steam coming out of both your ears? sort out internal or relationship issues. First, check that your rare outburst of anger is just If your outburst is rare rather than pathological then that rare. If you are always the best response is to show angry or over-reacting then this is a fair sign that all is your children that your are human and apologize. Put a not right with you. I don’t little time between your outburst and your apology and consider giving an explanation. “Sorry about yelling at you guys. I have been working so

hard lately. I guess I need a break.†No need to grovel, just reveal your human side to

your family. Your children will take their cues from you and will more than likely talk on an emotional level if they see you go to the same space. Revealing your vulnerability gives children permission to reveal theirs. It is a good anger management practice to check your own anger levels from time to time. When you know you are under stress and feel yourself about to blow your top- take a break, phone someone up (and vent your spleen, if possible), or just to count to 20 (or 100) before you blow your stack unnecessarily to your kids. There is a place for parent anger in the discipline process as long as it is controlled. There are the times when children really

need to know they have crossed a line and your whole voice and attitude needs to convey that a behaviour is unacceptable. Most parents will know the type of response I am referring to. The voice goes steely and the words come out purposefully. Eye contact is strong and body language is direct. The kids aren’t frightened. They just know that that their mum or dad mean what they say! Gulp! It is the type of response that should be saved for times when children put each other down un-mercilessly, or when they show gross disrespect to themselves, others or their environment. We all want to steer clear from angry responses when we interact with those we love. But being human means that our behavior doesn’t always reach the lofty heights that we would like, and at times we lose our cool. So recognize the signs of pending anger and take steps to manage it, and if you do lose the plot, reveal your vulnerability and apologize. Nothing wrong with that! Michael Grose is The Parent Coach.
