Mandarin Pronunciation

Hanyu Pinyin/ Mandarin Chinese in Romanization(Pinyin)

Benefit

Bopomofo symbols are simplified words and its sound. Hanyu Pinyin’s alphabet is in English, but the pronunciation is different from English.

2. Tones

In common

System names & figures are different, but pronunciation method is near 100% similar. There are 4+1 tones: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5(Neutral tone, rare). Find your own voice range.

Hanyu pinyin Bopomofo ‧

1st tone, Hanyu Pinyin marks – (a line); but MPS doesn’t mark anything.

5th tone, only MPS marks‧(a dot above); but Hanyu Pinyin doesn’t mark anything.

5th tone changes with the front Chinese character, it’s not so commonly used in Taiwan, e.g.謝謝(xièxie)

2nd ˊ(a small slash), 3rdˇ(a check), 4thˋ(a small backslash) , tone marks are the same in both systems.

★Practice 練習: Taiwan 的中文是什麼？

* When you see two 3rd tone words, the first word automatically changes its pronunciation into 2nd tone, e.g.

◎Name of the country, company, person or at the beginning of a sentence, all should be capitalized in Pinyin if written or typed.

★Rules for Mandarin Tone Marking:

1. Always mark on “ ” .

2. No “ ” , go for “ ” or “ ” .

3. “ ” & “ ” together, mark the one behind.

4. No single vowel left behind.
