THE CUCKOOS
The club was formed in 1900 with the forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 190203 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came about in 1950-51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950s.
The Club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues which, over the years have been sponsored and known by many names such as Eastern Counties, Jewson, and Peterborough League. The Cuckoo’s finished as runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these being enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975-76 season and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title.
The 1983-84 season was a superb one with the first team win-
ning the treble, the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup, and the Reserves winning the Peterborough Division One Championship. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 1987-88 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season.
1993-94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994-95 season was at that time, probably the most successful in its history. This was the debut season of the illfated West Anglian League (amalgamation of the Hunts & East Northants Leagues) and the first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the championship. The Reserves also won Division One of the same competition thus emulating the feat of 1984-85. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove.
The 2002-03 season saw the Reserve and Youth teams win the lion’s share of league and cup silverware whilst Jim Watson took over the management of the
@GoddyRoversFC 8
9 first team making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities that were part of a five-year objective to take the club into the Dr. Martens (or equivalent) League. Plans were also made to incorporate Yaxley Juniors and establish a new Ladies team to assist in creating a community orientated football club. The ’03-04, ‘04-05 and ‘05-06 seasons have to date been undoubtedly been the clubs most successful ever with the First, Reserve, Youth, Ladies and Junior teams all bringing home trophies including at senior level, the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup and the UCL League Cup in May 2006. the club has maintained FA Charter Club status and was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities (e.g., new clubhouse and additional playing areas) to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development
plan. The dispute was finally settled, and the project restarted in August ’06.
Season 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. The following three seasons proved to be some of the toughest in the club’s history as against the pundit’s opinions; Gary Clipston pulled survival from the jaws of relegation.
The 2012-13 season saw a total rebuild of the First Team and players under the management of former Cuckoos player and Reserve Team manager Brett Whaley (assisted by Chris Lenton) and the reinstatement of the clubs Reserve Team acting as a bridge between our flourishing U18s and First Team. They finished midtable and were joint winners (along with Royston Town) of The Hinchingbrooke Cup, the reserve team were runners up in the league and the league cup and the U18s were league champions and league cup winners (comprehensively beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds). All in all, not a bad season.
2013-14 saw the dismantling of the Reserve Side due to a lack of bodies to manage the team to an acceptable level and a
godmanchesterroversfc.co.uk
brand new U18s team coming up from U16s football – a very tough season ahead. The First Team finished sixth in the league table a highly commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing although we probably created a couple of new records in the process.
2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a fourth position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history compounded by an embarrassing County Cup Final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the “shock” departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the clubs committee which was approved.
2015-16 A new brush and a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an exprofessional with massive experience in semi-pro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch that the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. The club would like to place on public record its deep and sincere appreciation to all those silent partners who have made our dream for growth and sustainability a reality. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return from Wisbech Town of Brett Whaley.
2016-17 Brett Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football by strengthening the squad with some impressive experience whilst retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. Brett brought back players and a great coaching team. In addition to an impressive third place in the league we also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fiercely contested battle.
2017-18 saw our new Chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the clubs target for promotion and building on the success of last season, started what we all hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Our local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed Reserves. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the First Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club. Furn’s led the club again to the league cup final (runners up) but more importantly to the league title and PROMOTION to the Evo-Stik SOUTHERN LEAGUE.
On the back of a tremendous promotion season, in 2018/19 the Cuckoos looked to sustain their rise to Step 4 retaining the complete squad from the previous year whilst bolstering in a couple of areas. The Reserve was led by Lloyd Burton. At Step 4 we entered the Southern League Midland Division and had two seasons there, although because of the covid outbreak the second season was not completed but at the time the club was just above midtable.
2021-22 began another new chapter after the FA reshuffle saw the club moved later-
10
ally to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, where we finished mid-table. 2022-23 was a season to forget as long-serving players moved on, Andy Furnell stepped down and other managerial appointments were unable to stop us from being relegated back to the UCL with just a single league win all season.
2023-24 starts with Simon Roberts at the helm as we look to rebuild with an entirely new squad of players once more.
1: Conor Barton (GK) - A local lad and loves Yaxley, excellent GK with excellent distribution and sharp reactions. Runs the player fines so gets into lots of battles on and off the pitch.
2: Ennis Fyffe (LB) although currently injured “Jamie” is a very fit and physical Left back, great balance and is always smiling.
3: Katiti Hakuria (LB) - Played international football for Namibia in his youth days, Katiti is another athletic player and is very determined in the defensive part of his game has a ridiculously loud whistle too.
4: Jay Chilvers (Capt) (CB) - Chiller is a skipper that leads by example, a quiet lad but always get 8/10 from him. Great in the air and another really great lad to have in your squad.
5: Finlay Henderson (CB) - Having started his football career as a forward player, Fin has shown all the great assets for a CB. Very good in the air, and composed
on the ball. Another of our squad fines committee, so he’s NEVER late for games.
6: Harvey Henderson (CB) - part two of the Twin Peaks defence, “Hendo” is an unreal Centre Half, has it all and will no doubt play higher in his career. Totally opposite to his brother Fin… would be late to his own funeral.
7: Rio Henson (FWD) - unreal talent, on his day probably the quickest and most dangerous player with a ball at his feet, Really quiet lad and if he wanted it, could easily play higher. Needs consistency in his game and he’ll be hot property.
8: Mark Baines (CDM) - Baino has done it all, the old man of the team, but gives a performance week in week out. Never lets you down, wonderful vision and a great asset to have among this young squad.
9: Ryley Nicholson -Barfoot (FWD)Pace, Vision, Touch and a great striker of the ball. Ryley has it all, including Tenaci-
11
ty and a “passion” for winning.
10: Matthew Harris-Hercules (FWD)“Hercs” has had a great season, current top scorer, and a player that Works has great instincts in front of the goal. The boy can rap too and has a tune or two to his name.
11: Kellan Hickinson (FWD) - Former Posh player having come through the academy to sign pro. Injury sadly took that away from him, but hoping to climb the pyramid with Yaxley as a restart point. Wonderful touch and vision. And another great striker of a football.
12: Lewis Baughan : (FWD) - Lew has only been at the club a couple of months after falling out of love with footy. Another great talent who can play s anywhere up top and is full of energy and desire. Will cause problems for lots of defenders. Glad he is back playing football.
13: Samuel Buckland (GK) - Young Sam, turned 16 this year and having been at the club for a while, we had to promote him to the squad to help his development. A huge presence between the sticks, and definitely one to watch.
14: Jez Goldson-Williams (FWD) - seems like he’s played for ever, but still looks young. A quick and experienced number 9, that gives us a different dimension up front. Always gives his all in games and training. Another good person to help this young group.
15: Lil Francisco (RB/RWB) - if common sense made a player, we wouldn’t have signed him. Asks the best questions in the chat group ….but what a player. Great energy, brilliant recovery skills and has really impressed this season. Very funny lad too.
16: Samuel Brooks (CB) - Brooksy started the season really well and cemented a position in the back line, however an ACL
12
injury cut the seadon short for him and hoping he makes a full recovery.
17: Jordan Venters (CB) - another very good defender with good technical ability, however another that has been unlucky with injuries and will be hoping to get into the squad once he is on the mend.
18: Josh Francis (CM) - Josh is a tough tackling midfielder, but can also do a job as RB. Recently joined the Cuckoos from Eaton Socon, having also played for St Neots.
Another great lad and will do well for the club.
19: Efraim Ronaldos (CM) - A strong central midfielder with a big presence. Compliments Baino very well and is box to box. Will surely get a few goals this season as well as helping us prevent them.
20: Julinho Gomes (FWD) - Former Cambridge Utd Academy player, Joa is quick, direct and skillful. He’ll be a threat to defenders in this league, and will get a few goals as well as assists.
21: Kelton Stringer (CM) - Kelts is a very talented box to box midfielder with a great eye for goal. Sadly for Kelts (and us) he’s not fully recovered from a pre season injury and so we haven’t seen much of him yet, but hoping that soon changes.
22: Loui Catt (FB) - Catty, like Lil is great in a chat group. And like Lil is a very fit
and talented full back with unreal recovery skills.
Can play anywhere left or right and has great technique. A great lad, just dont have hom on your quiz team
23: Isaac Kyreme (CAM) - Deffo one to watch. Currently out on loan but impressing in the PDFL Prem for Stanground.
Full of energy and such a polite lad that is willing to learn. Will be very good in time.
27: Sam Adams (RW) - quickest player in the squad, runs all day, unselfish and another really nice lad. Had 10 weeks out injured, but back now and will be hoping to find his pre-injury form.
28: Ryan Thomas (LB) - Currently in year 2 of a USA scholarship but had to sign him for his visits home to the UK. A wonderfully talented player with pace and a great range of pass. Wish he was here all year as he would be a real gem.
30: Quincy Shorunmu (GK) - An experienced GK that has fully supported the management and Conor, accepting the back up GK position with a great attitude. Always at training, has a great touch and is a brilliant shot stopper.
So grateful to have Quincy.
13
Dan Gleeson – Manager
Dan has re-joined us and this time steps into the number 1 seat, Dan is an ex-pro with Luton Town & Cambridge United who brings a lot of experience with him to the club. Dan will work well with the young squad we have for this season and has built a good back-room staff to join him.
Gary Marheineke - Assistant Manager
Gary is a pro-A licence coach who works for the local FA, brings lots of coaching talent to the training ground and to the pitch on match day, one of the most liked people in non-league football and has some England caps to his name as England's number 1 between the sticks. Gary is a great person to have in and around the club.
Paul France – Assistant
Mr Calm in the dug-out passionate as anybody about Godmanchester Rovers Fc, Paul is constantly looking for ways in which he can support the progress of the club, on and off the field. Very popular in the dressing room, the place wouldn’t be the same without him.
Errol McGammon - Fitness Coach
Errol is the beast of the engine room within the dressing room, combining his understanding of sports fitness with his understanding of the game. Errol has been around the non-league game for years and brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching team.
Richard Cosbey – Kit Man
Rich is exactly the sort of person who makes a non-league club run. If there is a job that Rich hasn’t done, we are yet to find it (and if we do, he will no doubt have a go). A top bloke and someone you want fighting for you not against you! Will not be in the dug-out next season as he steps up to his new role within the club.
Ben Newton (GK)
New to Godmanchester this season after we have tried a couple of people to fill this number 1 spot, Ben is just what we have been looking for and we wish we have found him sooner. Ben has immediately showed his quality. we wish Ben all the best for the season and look forwarded to working with over the coming seasons.
Charlie Nicolson (GK)
Charlie joins us from our U18 squad, he has already stepped in and played 90 mins for the first team at only the age of 16 years old. Charlie has been part of our youth set up since he was 13 years old and has worked his way through to our U18 squad, Reserves squad and now steps up as the backup keeper to Ben.
Alfie-Ray Turner
Alfie was part of our youth set up and at only 16 years old is a full-time member of the first team squad this season, he is young fearless and a rock of a defender for someone of his age. Alfie is keen to learn more and is always the first on the
14
training ground and taking information in.
Ruari O'Boyle
Rauri joined us in October from Coventry United, Ruari is a solid left back and a key member to our squad for this season. Ruari is calm on the ball and has a wicked left peg and places a lovely cross from set pieces and corners, we wish Ruari a warm welcome and hope we see him here for a long time.
Tom Spark
Another who played in a variety of positions last season but will be aiming to make a central role his own for the coming season. Sparky has great quality in possession and an ability to glide past players at speed. Will be looking to add more goals and assists to his game.
Owen Wallis
Owen joins us from Sweden in October and after taking 9 weeks for international clearance is was a pleasure to see him grace the field, hardworking centre back who can play some lovely football, won't shy away from a challenge and is a real leader on the pitch. We look forward to having Owen with us for a long time and become a legend of Godmanchester.
Ricki Goodale
Bob the builder, jack of all trades but what a centre back, great lad to have around the changing room, likes to see how far he can kick a ball out of the ground. Ricki is a old school centre back – head & kick it, do the simple things
correct. Ricki joins us halfway through the season and has already made a big difference to the squad.
Ben Arnold
Ben has joined us from just up the A1 and Yaxley Fc, Ben can play either centre back or holding midfield and is a very talented footballer, Ben does not mind a tackle and likes to get stuck in. He is a great talker throughout the game and is great to support the young guns of the squad.
Matt Green (Captain)
Matt is the most experienced player in our squad this season and is the club captain, Matt is a solid player and can play centre back or holding midfield. Matt is very good with the younger ones and is a real leader on and off the pitch. we look forward to seeing Matt lead our team this season and many more to come.
Ben Tait
we chased and chased for Ben's signature last season, but he was loyal to his previous club Ely City Fc (which is good, great guy) Ben is a young centre attacking midfielder who has a great engine to get around the pitch. Ben is a key member of this squad, and he is a very talented young guy. His quick feet and the drop of the shoulder leaves most players on the pitch for dust. Ben oversees the tunes for the dressing room.
Sammy Fisher-Diaz
Another signed for this season who can
Delivering quality Homes
15
play left full back, young and pacey who likes to get forward when he can, Sammy is keen to learn and always first to training and last to leave. Showed a great attitude during preseason, takes responsibility defensively and comfortable in possession.
Sam Tagg
Another signed from this seasons U18's, young centre midfielder who impressed in pre-season and has been called up to the senior squad, has a great left foot.
Mani Gbejuade
Mani rejoins us after having started with us at the beginning of the season, then departing to play step 4 football, after 2 months he is now back where he belongs, good strong forward player. Mani is big and powerful and has full backs running scared all day long.
Ron Sosoli
Ron joins us from local step 3 outfit St Ives Town Fc, Ron is a great lad who can play either side full back, likes to attack as well but is a sloid defender first. Ron is a quite lad off the field but comes out of his shell on the field.
Luke Lindsay
Luke is a big strong centre forward who re-joins us after spending a couple of seasons away at Histon Fc. Luke is big and powerful who can hold the ball up well and wins 99% of his headers. we are very pleased to have Luke back at Godmanchester Rovers Fc.
Hashim Bakar
Hashim is new to the squad for this season and is a striker who can play anywhere across the front three, Hashim is very quiet and keeps himself to himself but out on the pitch he comes alive. Hashim is strong and powerful and likes to run at the defence line of any squad he is facing.
Louis Aftersmith
Louis is from our last season U16 and now in our U18 set up, he is a young strong centre back and has already had 5 run outs in the first team squad. Louis will only get better and better while training and playing with the senior squad. We are super proud to have brought so many of the U18's into the senior side.
Ed Watson
Ed is another young gun from the Royston U18 set up. Ed can play anywhere across the forward line who likes to get in and around the defence of any team we are playing against. Ed is learning every time he steps onto the pitch and is becoming a key member of the senior squad.
Kingsley Bates
Kinglsey is another young gun from the Royston U18 set up. Kingsley is a young quick and tricky winger, drives at defences all day long as is very direct for someone of his age. New to the squad Kingsley has fitted in straight away.

IN FORM TEAMS Lastsixleaguematches
The biggest game in Italy is always a spectacle. Juventus’ matches against Internazionale are nicknamed the Derby d’Italia, and for good reason. The Bianconeri are out in front of all of their domestic opponents, consistently the team to beat on the peninsula and boasting an impressive record of trophies. Inter are their closest rivals, both in terms of titles won (although Milan have now joined them) and in terms of the ferocity of their duels, far surpassing the Turin derby for Italy’s most successful club. You might expect, then, that the record between the two is always close, even if one side gains the ascendency for a period. You might not expect, from a fiercely contested season, for the record result between the teams to be a 9 1 drubbing by Juventus of their
Approaching seven years without a Scudetto, in the summer of 1960 Inter made perhaps the most important decision in their history, approaching Spanish giants Barcelona for permission to talk to their Argentinian manager. The arrival of Helenio Herrera at the San Siro immediately improved their fortunes, and over the course of the 1960s would lead to significant successes, including three league titles in four years and two successive European Cups. But when he arrived in Italy, Juventus were the reigning champions, and were still the side to beat.
Herrera’s rejuvenated Inter held the early ascendency in the season, beating Juventus 3-1 at home before Christmas, but struggled to maintain their form after the
26
Juventus v Inter
into the return fixture in April, and needed a win to maintain their title hopes. Herrera’s new catenaccio would have to be at its absolute best to cope with Juventus hero Omar Sivori, who seemed able to score from nothing.
They started brightly, and were the stronger side against the hosts, whose fans grew more and more enraged at their side’s inability to impress themselves onto the game. At one point, Inter broke, catching Juventus up the pitch, and hit the post with their chance. That was the moment the dam broke, and riotous Juventus fans spilled onto the pitch. Chased from the stadium, the Inter players took refuge in the changing rooms, until the referee decided to abandon the match due to crowd trouble. When Herrera and his players made their way back to Milan, news came through that they had been awarded the match 2-0, closing the gap to within a single game.
Inter used the awarding of the result to spur them on for the rest of the season, which the Italian FA - the FIGC - fell into disarray. Going into the final games of the season, Juventus still led the league, but a loss at Fiorentina would give Inter a chance to secure their first title since the mid-1950s. The FIGC, however, had appointed Umberto Agnelli as its president, and had other ideas. Despite the conflict of interest - the Agnelli family have owned Juventus since 1923 - they announced that the abandoned game would be re-
played, and Inter’s 2-0 victory would be withdrawn. Inter protested that the FIGC were simply handing the title to the team owned by their president, and lost their final game with the distraction. Juventus secured the point they needed anyway, but the decision left an ill-tempered deadrubber between the sides still to be played.
In protest against the decision, Helenio Herrera and the Inter board decided to play the youth team in the 1961 Derby d’Italia. The youngsters simply couldn’t compete with the champions, and succumbed to a chastening defeat. Sivori helped himself to six goals in the game, taking him to within striking distance of the Capocannoniere, the award for the top goalscorer in the season. For Inter, the occasion was marked by a first goal for Sandro Mazzola, who would go on to become something of a legend himself.
27
Omar Sivori
Inter suffered further ignominy the following season, watching their city rivals lift the
er hand, struggled against relegation following the 1961 season. The decade would eventually belong to Inter, but the rancour remained.
As for the corruption at the heart of Italian football, there is a belief that has borne out throughout the following decades: Juventus might not always instigate the scandal, but they are always involved somewhere. And, after the 1961 debacle, who can argue?
Enjoy the game.
