Art Director for feature film directed by Chloé Zhao
Art Direction for Nomadland involved working seamlessly across fictional and documentary-like settings. Frances McDormand’s character, Fern, lives in a van that was built from scratch. I worked closely with the director on art direction as well as set decoration and props for this film. It meant making Fern’s environment at home with van dwellers who had been living that life style for upwards of 30 years. Design also meant working closely with producers and cast to alter existing conditions, and create realistic situations for improvisational scenes to happen.

Production design for this indie feature was based in psychology and character. We favored warm dreamy environments as the main character slowly losing his sense of reality, and stark blues for the surrounding characters who can’t seem to reach him. Small moments of chaos within the frame separated characters within a family who resist communicating with each other.
