Expanding Our Fleet of Eco-Friendly Buses through an Indiana Department of Environmental Management grant.

Our community is what matters most to us, and an important part of serving the Greater Lafayette area is providing consistent, eco-friendly service to your destination.

To do this, five years ago we began the process of switching some of our fleet to buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), a clean alternative to diesel that’s becoming increasingly common in public transit.

Our New Buses

As our buses exceed their useful life, we will be replacing them with clean-air alternatives.

In 2020, we will replace four diesel buses with CNG-powered vehicles. These changes were the result of a $182,849 grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, which works to promote clean air by funding projects like ours.

“The Committee’s first round of funding is a big step toward reducing diesel emissions in Indiana. These awards are going to improve the air quality for Hoosiers across the state,” said Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner and Committee member Bruno Pigott.

CNG Power

CNG is a cleaner alternative to the diesel used to fuel older buses. We even have a fueling station on-site. CNG-powered buses provide many benefits for CityBus and the community, including: •

Meeting Our Goal In 2013, we developed an initiative to decrease our environmental impact and lower the fuel and service costs of the fleet through the purchase of new buses.

The recent addition to our fleet allowed us to go above and beyond our goal of replacing half our fixed-route fleet with CNG-powered buses by 2025.

CityBus Expands Its Reach 1B , 4B, & 8 Service Extension This fall, we made changes to routes 1B Salisbury and 4B Purdue West to improve service. These updated routes have made our buses safer and more reliable.

What’s new with route 1B? The 1B Salisbury route operates seven days a week. It serves a variety of stops between North 4th Street in Lafayette and Klondike Road in West Lafayette.

The portion of route 1B that previously served Sagamore Pkwy. and Klondike Rd. is now the 8 Klondike Extension route.

Riders traveling to these areas must now transfer to route 8 at Walmart.

What’s new with route 4B? The 4B Purdue West route operates seven days a week. It serves North 2nd Street in Lafayette and Cumberland Avenue in West Lafayette.

Changes to this route, and new stops added to route 1B, mean that 4B Purdue West will no longer serve: •

Meet Our Staff

Amy Burnett

Keeping a fleet of 75 buses on the road requires a lot of crunching the numbers, but when it comes to caring about the community and about CityBus, Amy Burnett makes sure it’s about more than just the figures.

Burnett has been with CityBus since 2007 and has served as the Controller and Manager of Administration at CityBus since 2017. She’s also the Procurement Manager, the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Liaison Officer, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer.

All Areas of Accounting In Burnett’s 12 years with CityBus, she’s held three positions in the accounting department. “I started as the Full Charge Bookkeeper in 2007, was promoted to Assistant Controller in 2012, and was promoted in 2017 to Controller,” Burnett said.

Prior to working at CityBus, much of Burnett’s accounting work had been limited to accounts receivable and product pricing. She was excited about the variety of duties that came with her first position at CityBus. “It was exciting to get to touch all the areas of

accounting,” Burnett said.

In her current position as Controller and Manager of Administration, she essentially serves as the Chief Financial Officer of CityBus.

Room for Creativity While Burnett says that accounting is her passion, she also mentions that it doesn’t always leave her much room to be as creative as she likes. “CityBus allows me to be creative in other areas,” Burnett said.

She often has opportunities to find innovative ways to improve CityBus, like participating in discussions about employee relations, philanthropy, and wellness. Most recently, Burnett was able to kickstart an effort from employees for charitable donations. We call it the Month of Giving, where we pick a different cause to support each month.

Rider Feature Charles Tousant When the company Charles Tousant was working for moved to Indiana in 1996, he was far from familiar with the area but was familiar with public transit after growing up in Chicago. Now, he trusts CityBus to get him where he needs to go in Greater Lafayette every day.

“I’ve been riding CityBus since I got to Indiana,” says Tousant. For the last 23 years, he’s been a regular rider throughout working and retirement.

Tousant enjoys taking route 4A to Tippecanoe Mall, and he often takes the bus to Walmart and Payless for day-to-day errands. “CityBus makes my life easier,” says Tousant. He says CityBus helps him stay off his feet and avoid walking long distances which, at 80 years old, is a big help. The variety of routes helps him stay independent, so he doesn’t have to rely on others to reach his usual destinations.

joy comes from meeting and building relationships with people like Mr. Tousant,” says Manager of Development Bryce Gibson. Tousant appreciates the friendliness of the drivers on his routes, and he enjoys talking with them on his rides. “I know all the drivers, and they know me,” he says.

For fun, he enjoys dancing and listening to music whenever he gets the chance.

He is especially a fan of rock ‘n’ roll and Stevie Wonder, thanks to his diverse group of friends during his time in Chicago. “I went to an international school. They were all listening to rock ‘n’ roll, so I started listening to rock ‘n’ roll, too.”

We’re thankful for Charles and the patronage of all of our longtime riders here at CityBus. They definitely rock!

If you or someone you know needs a little assistance learning to navigate the bus system, Travel Training with CityBus is a great way to get started.

What is Travel Training?

What should you expect?

Travel Training is a free program that teaches people in Greater Lafayette how to ride CityBus, plan trips, and use the MyCityBus app.

You will meet your travel trainer outside your building at the scheduled time.

Your trainer will ride to and from your destination with you if needed.

You will learn how to travel to and from your destination and use the MyCityBus app.

How can you request training?

Riders interested in Travel Training can call (765) 742-7433 or email ridehelp@ gocitybus.com to schedule their training time.

Training sessions can be scheduled Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm.

Appointments should be scheduled at least one week in advance.
