Storylines • Augustana (24-6) earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Central Region and will face fellow NSIC member No. 3 seed Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, March 15 at 12 p.m. in Topeka, Kan. • The Vikings were guaranteed a spot in the regional after winning the NSIC tournament title • Washburn University notched the top seed and will host the NCAA Central Region Tournament in Lee Arena • If the Vikings win, they will face the winner of No. 2 seed Central Missouri and No. 7 seed Southwest Oklahoma State • On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Washburn faces No. 8 seed Emporia State who won the automatic bid from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association • The winner of that matchup will face either No. 4 seed Minnesota State and No. 5 seed Arkansas Tech

Vikings in the NCAA Tournament • Augustana is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA tournament • This is the second consecutive trip and fourth in five years for Augustana • The Vikings have compiled a 6-12 record over their first 12 trips • Augustana has never advanced past the second round, playing in the daunting Central Region • The Vikings have lost to the eventual national champion in five of their postseason trips (1991, 1993, 1994, 1999, and 2009) and national runner-up on two occasions • Five of those years, the Vikings lost in second round games • Since joining the NSIC for the 2008-09 season, the Vikings have earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament four of the five years, just missing in the 2011 • In 2010 and 2012, the Vikings advanced to the second round before losing to the region champion

First-time conference champions • Augustana’s 81-73 win over Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament Championship gave them their first conference title, regular season or tournament, in the women’s basketball program’s 40th year • The Vikings finished third in the NSIC overall and south division standings in the regular season • After losing to Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State twice each, the Vikings beat both teams on the way to their historic championship • Emily Schulte was named tournament MVP and senior Lydia Nelson and sophomore Andrea Whitney were named to the All-Tournament team along with Schulte • The Vikings beat their opponents by an average of 12.5 points per game despite battling poor shooting • Augustana has finished second in their conference, twice in the NSIC, in regular season play • This was the second consecutive appearance for the Vikings in the NSIC Tournament Championship game

Sure-shootin’ Schulte • Junior guard Emily Schulte was hands-down the best player throughout the NSIC Tournament • Schulte averaged 18.5 points, while collecting 17 rebounds, dishing out 14 assists and collecting nine steals • In the championship game, Schulte scored 19 points, swiped five steals while collecting four rebounds and assists • For the tournament, Schulte made or assisted on 36 of the Vikings 97 field goals, a 37.1 percent mark • Schulte’s previous career-high was 19 points - she hit or exceeded that mark in three of the four tournament games • At the foul line, Schulte was 23-26 on free throws and her consecutive free throws made streak hit 20 before she missed in the first half of the championship contest

• Schulte’s true shooting percentage, a metric that factors in free throws, was an astounding 60.3 percent during the NSIC tournament • For the tournament, Schulte logged a plus-59 scoring rating, meaning when she was on the court for the Vikings, they outscored their opponents by 59 points.

Lock-down defense • Augustana has yet to allow an opponent to shoot over 40 percent from the field this season • The Vikings’ adversaries have collectively shot 33.8 percent from the field, the eighth-best mark in Division II • With Concordia-St. Paul being the latest victim, Augustana has held its opponents below 30 percent shooting on six occasions • The Vikings’ three-point percentage defense has been an achilles heel at points during the season, but in the NSIC tournament, the Vikings held opponents to 15-65 shooting, 23.1 percent • The Vikings have forced double-digit turnovers in all but one game, including 59 over the four-game span of the NSIC tournament • When the Vikings hold their opponents below 70 points, they are 23-1 • The Vikings are allowing an average of 58.9 points per game and outscoring opponents by 16.9 points per contest, a mark that ranks sixth in Division II

Nelson hits a thousand - Augustana records watch • Senior forward Lydia Nelson surpassed 1,000 career points with her eighth point in the NSIC Championship game • Nelson has amassed 1,005 points in her four year career and hit 1,000 when she sank her second free throw with 15:10 left in the game • Nelson currently ranks 27th on the Augustana career scoring list; she is also the 27th member to join the club • Nelson’s front court teammate Alex Feeney ranks fifth with 1,651 points • Feeney is just 16 points behind former Augustana great Cindy Heyden • Feeney ranks fourth in field goals made (620), and third in both three-point field goal percentage (.418) and free throw percentage (.836) • Faith Tinklenberg, the record holder for career games played with 125 after Friday’s contest, has tallied 931 points in her career which ranks 32nd in the annals of Augustana basketball • Feeney will tie former teammate and Augustana great with her 123rd career start in Friday’s contest against Concordia-St. Paul Series Histories - vs. Concordia-St. Paul • This is the fourth time in 2013 that the Vikings have squared off against the Golden Bears • CU holds a 2-1 edge this season, but Augustana is 9-7 all-time against Concordia-St. Paul • This is the first meeting between the two programs in the NCAA Tournament • Neither team has won more than three consecutive matchups against the other - vs. other Central Region Tournament participants • The Vikings have faced three of the possible six remaining opponents in the Central Region bracket • Augustana has never faced either possible second round opponent, No. 2 seed Central Missouri and No. 7 seed Southwestern Oklahoma State • The Vikings have faced No. 1 seed Washburn and No. 8 seed Emporia State each one time. • In the 1985-86 season, the Vikings defeated Washburn 76-65 • One season earlier, Augustana beat Emporia State 92-72 • Also on the top half of the bracket, the Vikings could face NSIC foe Minnesota State • The Vikings own a 39-25 edge over the Mavericks since they first played in the 1983-84 season • Despite the 14-game lead the Vikings have in the all-time series, they are just 2-7 in neutral site games • The Vikings have not faced fifth-seeded Arkansas Tech

Fast paced, exciting, entertaining and winning aptly describe Augustana women’s basketball. Dave Krauth is the architect of the program that is among the most successful in NCAA Division II.

Krauth’s 2011-12 Vikings posted a 24-7 record, marking the eighth consecutive year Augustana has chalked up 20 or more wins in a season.spurred by an 8-3 conference record on the road, the Vikings finished second (18-4).

Three of the Vikings’ season losses were to NSIC regular-season champion Wayne State College. The Wildcats also won the conference tournament and qualified for the Elite Eight. Two of the Vikings’ setbacks to Wayne came by a total of six points, and Augustana defeated the Wildcats in the team’s first meeting during the regular season.

Senior point guard Molly Hayes and junior forward Alex Feeney was chosen to the All-NSIC first team. Hayes was a Central Region all-tournament team pick, while Feeney earned honorable mention recognition on both the Division II Bulletin and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 2012 All-America teams. Feeney is the fifth player to receive All-America recognition during Krauth’s tenure.

The 2012-13 season is Krauth’s 24th as the Vikings’ head coach. His 489-215 career record is the best of any basketball coach in the College’s history. Fifteen times his teams have posted 20-win seasons. Since the 2004-05 campaign, the Vikings have a .731 winning percentage (201-74).

Selection to the NCAA Tournament has been the norm for Krauth and the Vikings. During the 1990s the Vikings earned tournament berths seven times. His ‘90s teams also had five 20-win seasons and never finished below fifth in the nationally renowned North Central Conference.

Krauth’s personal honors include North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1990, the South Dakota Sportswriters’ College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1994, and the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association Women’s College Coach of the Year in 1989-90, 1990-91, and 2004-05. In 2006, he was named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Division II, Region Seven Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to a 25-7 record. Included was a school-record 20-game winning streak. In 2012, Krauth was inducted into the Sioux Falls O'Gorman athletic hall of fame.

Teaching and coaching stints at Tri-Valley High School (Colton, S.D.), and Roosevelt High School (Des Moines, Iowa) preceded Krauth’s Augustana appointment. He compiled a career record of 347-143 as a high school coach, taking eight teams to state tournaments. Krauth received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Sioux Falls in 1974. He earned a master’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from South Dakota State University in 1983. Krauth and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of two daughters, Julie and Katie. They have four grandchildren.

The Augustana women have not been bashful about stating that they should have won the NSIC regular season title this year. They finished third, but now they have their chance at redemption, as the Vikings used an impressive defensive performance to knock off top-seeded Concordia-St. Paul, the NSIC regular-season champ, 55-43 in the NSIC tournament semifinals in Rochester, Minn. The Vikings advance to today’s championship, where they’ll face the one other team that finished ahead of them in the standings, Minnesota State. A win would secure the Vikings (23-6) their first-ever conference title. “I just don’t think we played our best basketball the first two times we played (Concordia),” said Viking guard Emily Schulte, who continued a recent scoring-surge by netting 19 points. “We knew that coming in, so we really wanted to show that we could give them competition. We came out with a valiant team effort and that got it done for us.” Defense was the catalyst, as the Vikings held Concordia (23-6) to just four second-half field goals and 15 points, which helped Augie overcome a rather drab offensive performance of their own. The Vikings made just two 3-pointers in the game, and shot 39 percent from the floor. Augie led 29-28 at half, but a 10-0 run early in the second made it 41-30, and Schulte caught fire from there, stretching the run to 22-4 and the lead to 18. “It was a grinder but we defended real well,” said Augie coach Dave Krauth. “I thought Lydia (Nelson) had two or three steals early in the second half that really helped set the tone.” Nelson had 14 points, five rebounds and four steals for Augie, while Andrea Whitney continued her strong bench play with nine points and five boards. That helped the Vikings survive a quiet night from All-NSIC senior Alex Feeney, who made just one basket for a career-low two points. The win probably ensures that Augie will have a spot in the Division II NCAA tournament regardless of Saturday’s result, but right now the Viking players aren’t thinking about the regionals and they aren’t thinking about revenge on the Mavericks. “We’d be the first Augie team to win a conference championship,” Schulte said. “That’d be pretty sweet. With wife Sandy, daughters (and former Viking standouts) Julie and Katie and a handful of grandchildren in attendance, Krauth finally got the chance to hoist the trophy on Saturday, and the usually stoic coach made no effort to hide a wide grin as he triumphantly cut down the final strand of the net as teary-eyed players looked on. “With all the great teams he’s had and all he’s accomplished over the years, to finally be able to give him a championship, that was really our fuel,” said senior Alex Feeney, who had 10 points and nine rebounds. “We wanted to do it for him, and honestly I think we woke up this morning feeling like we were going to do it.” And no one can say the Vikings didn’t earn it. The third-seed entering the tourney, Augie had to go on the road to face North Division and No. 2 Mary in the second round, then had to take down top-seed Concordia-St. Paul, the NSIC regular-season champions, in the semis. That left MSU, the NSIC’s second-place team. Both Concordia and Mankato swept the Vikings in the season series, which was ultmiately what cost them the regular-season title. This was Augie’s chance at redemption, and they didn’t miss it. “I’m so happy that we did this by getting revenge on them,” said senior Lydia Nelson, who had 13 points on Saturday and was named to the all-tournament team, along with Schulte and reserve post Andrea Whitney, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks against MSU. “We were so focused. We got a chance to prove to ourselves and to the league what kind of team we are, and we were able to win for coach. I couldn’t possibly be happier.” The Vikings (24-6) came out strong, but the Mavs were ready, and it was a back-and-forth game for virtually the duration. Augie led 28-20 midway through the first, but MSU rallied, and appeared poised to take the lead into the half. But Schulte miraculously drained a 55-footer at the buzzer, putting the Vikings back on top, 43-41. “That was a huge momentum play,” Feeney said. “Huge. Instead of going to the half with our heads hanging feeling like we’d wasted a lead, we were in there celebrating.” MSU clawed in front 54-48 early in the second half, but the Vikings used an 18-5 run that was heavy on Schulte and Whitney – at both ends – to go up by six. Again, MSU answered, going up 67-66, but a 3-pointer by a previously slumping Shaunteva Ashley at the end of the shot clock put the Vikings back up 69-67 with just under six minutes to go. The Vikings only tightened their grip from there. The statistics were even, except for at the line, where Augie outscored Mankato, 24-13. Karlee Gengenbacher had 19 points to lead the Mavs (25-5), while seniors Cami Koehn and Faith Tinklenberg each had eight key points for the Vikings. T AUGUSTANA

The win clinches an NCAA tournament berth for Augie, and they’ll be a dangerous team. But the flood of emotions that poured out of the Vikings after Saturday’s win made it clear that the regional wouldn’t have been much of a consolation prize. This was all about winning a championship for their coach. “I appreciate it,” Krauth said of his players’ desire to win for him. “But I feel really good for this team. We have a nice senior class that has done a lot for this program, so I really feel good for all of us. It was hard-fought, but I really had a sense that we were going to circle the wagons and get it done.
