India looking to import uranium from Uzbekistan

NEW DELHI : India is in talks with Uzbekistan for procuring uranium for growing requirement of fuel for its nuclear plants, expected to increase in number in coming years. A delegation of department of atomic energy (DAE) officials travelled to Uzbekistan last week to discuss the modalities of a possible contract, sources said. A contract for procurement of uranium could materialise in the near future. India is looking at importing about 2,000 tonnes of uranium by 2014 from Uzbekistan, which has 1,85,800 tonnes of proven uranium deposits. The visit by the DAE team took place against the backdrop of talks between external affairs minister Salman Khurshid and his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov last month in Tashkent. During the talks, the issue of uranium import to India was discussed. India already has a contract for uranium import from another Central Asian nation Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Apart from these countries, Kyrgyzstan also has rich uranium deposits. DAE officials, however, said that they were looking for uranium across the world to meet the growing demand for the country's nuclear power plants. "It is not that we are focusing on Central Asia only, but the region happens to have proven reserves of uranium. We will try to procure uranium from wherever possible," said a senior DAE official. "We are also looking at Niger and Namibia to get our supply of uranium," the official added. Both these countries have rich deposits of uranium. In 2009, India also signed a civil nuclear cooperation with Namibia. India currently has 19 active nuclear reactors that produce 4,780 MW of electricity. In the 12th Five Year Plan (20122017), Nuclear Power Corporation India Ltd (NPCIL) plans to add 16 more reactors and increase power generation to 16,000 MW and further take it up to 20,000 MW by 2022. In his speech at the 57th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna last month, DAE secretary Ratan Kumar Sinha said India had "limited resources" from which it is trying to "extract maximum energy". Sinha had said with the finding of new reserves of uranium, the total reserves capacity had shot up by five per cent. He was referring to the Tummalapalle mines in YSR district in Andhra Pradesh. Apart from Andhra Pradesh, other active uranium mines are in Jaduguda in Jharkhand. These reserves, however, are not enough to meet the increasing fuel demand. India has already signed a civil nuclear agreement with Mongolia in 2010 while it has a similar agreement in place with Kazakhstan to procure uranium. Kazakhstan has 15 per cent of uranium reserves of the world. India currently gets uranium from Russia, France and Kazakhstan. After the IndoUS nuclear deal in 2009, the 45-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) has been open to sell uranium to India. Countries like Canada and Australia, which were earlier stern over the issue, have expressed willingness to export uranium to India, albeit under the IAEA safeguards.

Sachin Tendulkar reaches 50,000 run landmark across all formats

New Delhi : Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar reached another coveted landmark by completing an astounding 50,000 runs in competitive cricket across all formats. Needing 26 runs on the day to reach the landmark, Tendulkar tucked one towards midwicket for a single off left-arm spinner Yannick Ottley to reach another milestone in his glorious career spanning close to two-and-ahalf decades. He scored 35 off 31 balls before edging one to Denesh Ramdin off Lendl Simmons` bowling. Tendulkar now has 50009 runs in 953 competitive matches, which includes 551 List A matches, 307 First-class matches and 95 T20 games. Tendulkar has so far scored 25,228 runs in 307 First-class matches which includes a staggering 15,837 runs in 198 Tests. The 40-year-old has 21,999 runs in 551 List A

03

matches which includes 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. Having scored 2747 in the 94 earlier T20 matches, the legend scored the necessary 26 runs with consummate ease. Tendulkar has had an ordinary tournament till the semi finals and could score only 20 runs in four matches with a highest score of only 15. The senior batsmen hit Ottley for two successive sixes- one over long-on followed by a maximum over deep extra cover. The best shot, however, was the deft late cut off Simmons` bowling. The maestro is also standing on the cusp of another rare feat of becoming the first player in the history of the game to play 200 Test matches, which in all likelihood will be completed in the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies.

Beauty Tips

Home Remedy for Dark Knees & Elbows Having dark knees and elbows can be rather embarrassing, especially if you are a woman. It can make you self conscious about wearing a dress or short sleeves. The primary reason that your knees and elbows are dark is because oil glands are not present in these areas, causing them to be dry. Also, dirt tends to get trapped in the crevices if not properly cleansed, causing them to look dark and patchy. If you don't take proper care of your knees and elbows, they will become covered by a rough layer of skin. By following a few steps, you can have the even-toned legs and arms that you desire.

Home made remedies Moisturize your elbows and knees. After each shower or bath, apply coconut oil or olive oil to your knees and elbows. Use a moisturizing lotion, throughout the day, or whenever you notice any dryness. In addition, you can cut off the ends of two pairs of socks, and position it over your elbows and knees after moisturizing at night to seal in the moisture and prevent it from being rubbed off. For extra protection, wrap your elbows and knees in plastic wrap prior to covering with the sock. Apply fresh lemon juice to your knees and elbows. Lemon juice bleaches your skin, as it is a natural whitener. Cut a lemon in four sections and rub the juice from one section on the darkened areas. You can store the other sections in the refrigerator for later use. Leave it on overnight, and wash it off in the morning. Exfoliate your knees and elbows two times per week. Make a sugar scrub by mixing sugar and olive oil together. Add enough olive oil to the sugar until you have reached a slushy consistency. Pour the mixture in your hand and scrub the darkened areas. Exfoliating will get rid of dead skin, helping to soften the area and remove any dirt that is present. Make a mixture of almond powder and yogurt. Mix equal parts and apply to your knees and elbows. This mixture can be used to lighten dark areas. Self Care Stop leaning on your elbows and knees and you would see the difference in two days. Lose weight. Weight gain is considered one among the reasons for this problem. Always use a moisturizing scrub. Honey or oils (coconut, almond, sesame and olive) with granules like sugar or rock salt make a wonderful homemade scrub which helps in getting rid of the dead cells. Go for waxing instead of shaving your underarms. Excessive use of deodorants/antiperspirants can darken the skin. Apply a heavy moisturizer on your legs and arms even if your skin type is oily. Keep the elbows and knees moisturized. Aloe Vera (straight from the plant) also shows lightening of the skin. Keep the elbows and knees covered as much as possible. Drink plenty of water. It is great for your skin.

Now, Terminator-style robots that self-assemble

WASHINGTON : Scientists have developed new Terminator-style cube-shaped robots that can leap through the air, jump on top of each other and assemble together to form arbitrary shapes. A more refined version of the robots could temporarily repair bridges or buildings during emergencies, or assemble into different types of furniture or heavy equipment as needed, researchers believe. Developed by scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the robots, known as M-Blocks, are cubes with

no external moving parts. They are able to climb over and around one another, leap through the air, and roll across the ground, and even move while suspended upside down from metallic s u r f a c e s , researchers said. Inside each robot is a flywheel that can reach speeds of 20,000 revolutions per minute; when the flywheel is braked, it imparts its angular momentum to the cube.

On each edge of an M-Block, and on every face, are cleverly arranged permanent magnets that allow any two cubes to attach to each other. "It's one of these things that the [modular-robotics] community has been trying to do for a long time," said Daniela Rus, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). "We just needed a creative insight and somebody who was passionate enough to keep coming at it - despite being discouraged," Rus said. As with any modular-robot system, the hope is that the modules can be miniaturised: the ultimate aim

MIT researchers are now building an army of 100 cubes, each of which can move in any direction, and designing algorithms to guide them. "We want hundreds of cubes, scattered randomly across the floor, to be able to identify each other, coalesce, and autonomously transform into a chair, or a ladder, or a desk, on demand," said John Romanishin, a research scientist in CSAIL, who first proposed the new design for modular robots.

Health is Wealth

Warts are small, non-cancerous growths on the skin that may vary in size, shape and color. Some warts present as small, flat and smooth lesions whereas some may appear as rough and hard growths on the skin. Warts are caused by a virus called human pappiloma virus (HPV). The human pappiloma virus causes the top layer of skin to grow rapidly, thereby giving rise to the formation of a wart.

Warts are generally skin colored though they can be darker or lighter than the skin color. The surface may be smooth or rough. The shapes may also vary significantly, some of the warts being flat, others being larger and fleshy and yet others being thin, long and cylindrical. Although warts can occur on any part of the body, commonly affected areas include: Hands Feet (especially soles) Genitals Face and neck Warts may occur one at a time or in clusters. They are usually painless though in case of affection of soles (plantar warts), pain may be an evident feature. Children and young people are more prone to develop warts and being contagious in nature, they spread easily from one person to another. Warts also tend to spread easily from one part of the body to another in the same individual. One of the common reasons why warts spread so easily is that people try to get rid of them by shaving them off or trying other means by which only part of the wart is removed. A half-removed wart of this kind is more prone to spread the virus to other parts of the body and to other people. Warts often disappear by themselves within a few months or years but this may not be the case always. Some

What are Warts?

warts tend to be very stubborn and in spite of rigorous treatment, take long time to go. Types of Warts Several types of warts are seen in clinical practice and some of the common variants have been described here: Common warts (verrucae vulgaris) Common warts are typically grey to flesh colored, raised lesions varying in size from pinhead to about 10 mm in diameter. They are generally covered with rough, horn-like projections and are commonly seen on hands and feet, especially around the nails. As the names suggests, these are the most common variety of warts and can affect people belonging to all age groups. Flat warts As compared to common warts, these warts are small and only slightly raised above

the skin. They can be flesh colored or whitish and appear smooth (unlike common warts that appear rough). Flat warts are generally the size of a pinhead and may appear in clusters. Common locations of flat warts are face and legs. When they occur on the face, they tend to spread rapidly especially with activities like shaving. Teenagers and adults are more prone to develop flat warts. Filiform warts Filiform warts, as the name suggests, are long, narrow and filamentous warts. These flesh colored growths tend to affect the face and neck more often. They generally appear in clusters and have a tendency to grow rapidly. Filiform warts also spread easily especially by sharing face towels or facial products. If accidentally rubbed or scratched, they may

get irritated and may bleed. Plantar warts One of the painful varieties of warts, plantar warts occur on the soles of the feet. They are often called as mosaic warts due to their mosaiclike appearance. They tend to grow into the skin of the soles and hence are difficult to treat. Plantar warts often have a tiny dot at the centre which is due to clogged blood vessels. Having a plantar wart makes walking around painful since it is constantly subjected to pressure thus rendering it tender. Genital warts / Condyloma Warts that affect the genital region are called genital warts and they are amongst the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Typical locations in male patients include the penis and in case of women, (Cont. on PG. 7)

Appearance-wise, genital warts are seen as flat raised lesions or cauliflower-like bumps that are generally flesh colored. They may be small in size making them difficult to spot at times; in other cases they may be larger and itchy. There may be tenderness or a burning sensation in the affected region. In case of genital warts on the cervix, the woman may experience bleeding after sexual intercourse. Genital warts may occur singly or in clusters. They are highly contagious and they spread easily through sexual contact (vaginal or anal) or oro-genital contact (oral sex). Genital warts do not spread through bodily fluids and a direct physical contact is essential for transmission. After an initial exposure to the partner's genital warts, a person may develop the same weeks, months or even years later. They tend to be recurrent in nature and frequent outbreaks are seen in the affected person.

Causes of Warts Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the primary culprit in the development of warts. There are more than hundred types of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and most of them cause warts to develop on the skin. Some of the types of HPV cause genital warts and these have been implicated in the causation of cervical cancer in women. The Human Papilloma Virus spreads though direct contact and that is the reason why warts spread from person to person as well as from one body part to another in the same individual. The virus finds way into the body through skin that is moist, cracked or is peeling. A site of recent injury is another common entry-point for the virus. Once the virus enters the body, the incubation period begins (during which the virus remains dormant) and this varies from one to eight months. After this period, the outbreak of the wart is seen. Virus that has been shed recently remains alive in a warm, moist environment such as cellars, locker rooms, etc. There are numerous ways in which the virus can spread and these include:

From one part of the body to another (in the same individual) Direct contact with someone else's wart Contact with towel or any other object used by someone who has a wart Genital contact as in vaginal/ anal/oral sex (for genital warts) Genital warts are much more contagious as compared to other varieties of warts. Homeopathic treatment Homeopathic practitioners have time and again demonstrated the success of homeopathy in the treatment of warts for more than 200 years now. Whether it is getting rid of the existing warts, preventing the formation of new ones or healing the tendency to wart formation, Homeopathy has an answer to all of these. At Dr. Batra's, we have been treating patients with warts for 35 years now, and had good results in most cases. Homeopathic treatment helps patients to get rid of warts safely and effectively without the use of any conventional methods. In any case, conventional methods like freezing (cryotherapy or liquid nitrogen therapy),

treatment varies from case to case - some warts disappear readily with medication whereas others require long-term treatment and are slow to disappear. The important thing about Homeopathic treatment is that besides healing them, it prevents the warts from spreading to other parts of the body. Proper constitutional treatment removes the tendency for wart formation from the roots thereby giving lasting results. Overall, the treatment of warts with Homeopathy gives good results in most cases and the best part is that the treatment is safe and without any sideeffects. Homeopathy is strongly suggested for all cases of warts. Self care for Warts Warts can spread easily from one person to another as well from one location to another in the same individual. It is important to take good care so as to avoid the spreading of warts in the aforementioned manner. At Dr. Batra's, we have been treating patients with warts for last 35 years and have had good results in most cases. Based on

07

our vast clinical experience and the expertise of qualified and skilled dermatologists belonging to our team, we have observed that the following tips go a long way in helping patients to deal with their warts: Avoid picking at warts since they spread faster like this. Avoid shaving areas that have warts to keep the virus from spreading. In case of children, cover the warts with an adhesive bandage this will keep them from picking the warts. Children must be encouraged to wash hands properly after they finish playing. Keep the affected area dry since warts tend to thrive better in moist environment. If you have accidentally touched someone else's warts (or even your own) , wash your hands properly after that. If you or your partner has genital warts, abstain from sexual activity since genital warts are highly contagious. Some physicians recommend using condoms but these do not provide complete protection from genital warts (since warts may be in areas not completely covered by the condom). Don’t share personal care objects (such as towel, comb, nail clipper, etc.) with someone who has warts (or if you have warts, do not allow others to use your stuff). This helps to avoid the spreading of the virus. Our qualified and experienced nutritionist recommends the following to deal with warts: Include adequate amount of garlic, onions, eggs in your diet To improve your immunity against development of warts, have amla, guava, citrus fruits (rich sources of Vitamin C) Eat foods rich in vitamin B and calcium such as almonds, beans, whole grains (if no allergy is present), dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, and sea vegetables Reduce or eliminate trans-fatty acids, found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods and margarine. Eliminate caffeine, alcohol, other stimulants, refined foods, sugar and tobacco

India gets first radio station dedicated to gay community

New Delhi : The country`s lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual (LGTB) community can now celebrate freedom of airwaves with a round-the-clock radio station dedicated specifically to them. `Q Radio` which started operating from Bangalore this September claims to be the first radio station in India that is tailored for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender audience. "LGBT is a large special interest group left out of main stream media and social representation and this is a natural fit to our vision. The LGBT need media representation and a common ground to gather their thoughts and spread them from one place," Anil Srivatsa, CEO and co-founder, Radiowalla, the master mind behind the station said in an

interview. Talking about how the idea of having a gay community specific radio station struck him, Srivatsa, says, "This was in 2009 during the time I did my late night talk show `Between the sheets` on which now does not exist, when one of my topics had to do with homosexual experiences." "This call-in talk show apparently made me the Gay Icon among the young Delhi gay population which of course I did not imagine until I was told. If one show meant so much to them then I am sure an entire channel dedicated to their perspectives would be a welcome development," says Srivatsa. According to Srivatsa, there is need for specialised content in the mainstream media but it’s not necessary that the person not belonging to the `target audience`

can`t be a part of it, hence Q radio will also be open to the `non-LGTB` participants. "Our content will focus on life in India from an LGBT perspective where non-LGBT participants can also interact wearing the same shades of the rainbow," he says. The team aims to creating a dialogue between various social groups to enhance the understanding about the LGTB community in the society. "It will be a platform where even homophobes and perhaps fundamentalist groups against the community can get their own show and use that platform to reach out to the LGBT community to begin a dialogue socially," Srivatsa says.

Srivatsa, who was earlier heading the women's only radio station 'Meow FM’, believes that this dialogue is the first step towards creating a better understanding between the various groups and also for the LGBT lot to get a better understanding of where that fear of them emanates from. Srivatsa, who also made an entry in Limca book of Records in 2003 for his radio show called 'Anil ki Awaaz,' which became the largest syndicated South Asian Radio Show in North America. Q Radio had been his ambition since years. "Q Radio idea was born out of an absolute ambition like I said to myself 'one day I will start this” he says.

Palolem beach Palolem beach is largely unspoiled and is inhabited by both local fishermen and by foreign tourists who live in shacks along the shore or in the main village itself. It is about one mile long and is crescent-shaped; one can view the entire beach from either end. Both ends of the beach consist of rocks jutting out into the sea. The depth of the sea increases gradually, being shallowest at the northern end of the beach, making it safe for average swimmers, and the currents are not fast. Palolem Beach is located within 2.5 kilometres of the market town of Chaudi in South Goa, and about 40 minutes from Margao. The nearest airport is Dabolim Airport which is about 67 km away. Margao railway station is at a distance of 43 km. There are bus services at a regular interval of 30 minutes from the beach to the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) Bus Depot in Margao. In the early 1980's, Palolem was not that well known except for the few hippies who began coming to Palolem Island

and staying there for months. Palolem is one of the most beautiful beaches in Goa and as a result, it often becomes overcrowded during the holiday season. Palolem is flooded with a mix of nationalities and has a unique culture of beach cottage accommodation. It is becoming more and more popular as a holiday destination. It has gained so much popularity that even people from India have started visiting this place. Many of the cottages are right on the beach, facing the sea. Accommodation is very cheap and basic, and can't be booked online in most cases. Palolem Beach has often been justifiably dubbed as Paradise Beach. It stretches between two magnificent headlands and the beach is lined with towering coconut palms. Every season bamboo-hut resorts and restaurants are erected along the beach allowing tourists to stay right on the sand, only a few meters away from a swim in the Arabian Sea. Restaurants in Palolem are

You can get anything from local Indian delights to authentic Italian pizza and pasta, and an added bonus is that alcohol is completely legal and very accessible. Sony Xperia Z1 review

The Xperia Z1 is Sony's latest flagship smart phone. It's one of the first phones powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and features a 5-inch full-HD display in a form factor which is in line with Sony's Omni Balance philosophy, but much sturdier, as it's flanked by an all new metal frame. Design/ Build The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a design that's understated yet classy. It takes on where the Xperia Z left off, and improvises on some design aspects. The phone is based on Sony's 'Omni Balance' design philosophy, which has evolved over time, with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra marking the shift in a way. Just like the Sony Xperia Z, the Xperia Z1 looks like a big rectangular glass slab with clean lines that give the phone a minimalistic look. The front of the Xperia Z1 is dominated by a 5-inch display panel. The front camera lens, sensors and a notification LED are placed above the screen along with Sony branding. The earpiece grill lies between the top edge of the front glass panel and the phone's frame. The phone is held together by a sturdy silver-coloured aluminium frame that adds

Display The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, and a whopping pixel density of 440ppi. The display uses Sony's Triluminos technology, which was first featured on the Xperia Z Ultra. The Xperia Z1's display is a mixed bag in terms of performance. On one hand, it's bright and vivid; colours look vibrant, text looks crisp and images look sharp, but the viewing angles are not that wide, and the

to the phone's weight, but does make it feel solid. The phone's edges are more rounded compared to the Xperia Z's edges, and the black fibreglass inserts exude a premium feel. The Xperia Z1 is a bit thicker than the Xperia Z and the Xperia Z Ultra. The right edge of the Sony Xperia Z1 features a lanyard hole, a camera shutter key, a volume rocker key, and a round aluminium power/ screen-lock button towards the middle, in addition to a protective flap that hides the micro-SIM card tray. The volume rocker is not as long as it typically is on other smart phones. The left edge of the Xperia Z1 features a dock connector in the middle and the Micro-USB port and microSD card slot towards the top. The Micro-USB port and the microSD slots are also protected by flaps. The bottom edge of the Xperia Z1 houses the speaker grill, while the top edge features the 3.5mm headset jack. The back of the phone is made of glass and features the 20.7-megapixel camera lens, an LED flash and the Sony branding.

display appears washed-out when you don't look directly into the phone. Camera The Sony Xperia Z1 sports a 20.7-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS image sensor, Sony's G Lens with 27mm wide angle and f/2.0 aperture, and the BIONZ image processing engine. It's for the first time that Sony has integrated these superior imaging features into a smart phone and the Xperia Z1's camera lives up to the expectations. The default mode when you turn on the Xperia Z1's camera is Superior Auto, which automatically optimises the camera's settings according to the ambient conditions. Unless you're finicky about individual settings or want to compose a picture with certain prerequisites in mind, you'd be fine using the Superior Auto mode. You don't have to tinker with any of the

15 settings and the camera intelligently decides what's good for you. The only settings that are displayed are the ones related to the LED flash, self-timer, Smile Shutter, Preview, burst with long press, face detection, geotagging, shutter sound for still and self-timer, Steady Shot, and microphone for video. The stills are shot at a default resolution of 8.3-megapixels while videos are shot at 1080p. The Xperia Z1's camera uses down sampling to offer 8.3-megapixel images from a 20.7-megapixel lens, similar to Nokia Lumia 1020's Pure View camera. You can also set the resolution to 20.7-megaoixel in the manual mode. The other modes offered include manual, Time shift burst, Picture Effect, Sweep Panorama, AR Effect, Info-eye, Social Live and Ever note. The Xperia Z1's camera manual mode offers different scene selection modes, and the option to choose the resolution. The scenes also include anti-motion blur and backlight correction HDR. However, you won't see granular settings related to brightness,

exposure, ISO and other variable components. Info-eye is an augmented reality application that works like Google goggles and offers information related to the objects you point to. The other two modes (Social Live and Evernote) are extensions of other apps integrated with the camera. In terms of picture quality, the Sony Xperia Z1 outshines most flagship smart phones. Images shot with the Xperia Z1 during daylight look great with accurate colour rendering, good contrast and detail. Photos taken indoors in comparatively less light looked good as well. The Xperia Z1 features a 2-megapixel front facing camera capable of recording 1080p videos. Software/ User Interface The Xperia Z1 ships with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which is not the latest version

of Android, but Sony is likely to bring an update soon. The company has promised an Android 4.3 update for older phones like the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra. So it is fair to assume the Xperia Z1 will soon be added to that list. Android 4.2 brings goodies like lockscreen widgets, better notifications, and the Daydream picture frame mode, among others.

Using stone tiles at home has great appeal Pranil Sardessai (Architect /Interior Designer)

The use of stones in its various forms has always been appreciated. This material not only takes you closer to nature but also makes your home look elegant. Stone has been timeless for home improvements and commercial designs alike. The look of the space maybe traditional or contemporary, stone can give your space a natural yet refined and classy look. The earthiness that stones provide to the look of any space is unmatched by other such elements. Today natural materials are a global trend for floor cover and stone is being particularly chosen by discerning customers. There are varieties of stones available like marble, granite, and sandstone among others for interiors. Marble is ideal for flooring, bathroom countertops, stair cases and fireplaces among others. Avoid marble in the kitchen as it catches stains easily. Granite is a hard stone comparatively and can be used for kitchen counters and flooring among others. As Granite is harder and scratch resistant, it can be used for more prominently used areas. Sandstone is a low maintenance stone. It is a durable stone used for flooring, patios, terraces and garden paths among others.

There are also others like Veneer stone, Limestone, Slate and Travertine. These stones also have various other options depending upon the types and colours. The prominent use of stone is more in flooring, kitchen surfaces or a wall. However, it can be used in more innovative ways to highlight your decor. Conventionally thought of as an element for exterior design, stone has been increasingly used to give interior spaces a bold and edgy look. It is also used to add character; stone is being used for in various interior design elements such as floor cover, wall highlighting, area separators, fire places etc. Adding eclectic warmth to interiors, stone is used in kitchens, living areas, lobbies, bedrooms and bathrooms. The versatility of the material makes it an instant favourite. Flooring is the most common area of

stones. However, you can try other interesting stones apart from the usual marble and granite. Kitchen counter tops mostly have granite. Instead of usual black, you can go for different colours to match the theme. There is no need that backsplash especially in the kitchen needs to be in tiles. You can go for stone backsplash in accordance with your wall and cabinets. Countertops, shower enclosures and walls made of stone will make your bath look more aesthetic. The shelves for keeping plants in the patios can be made of stone to lend it an outdoor effect. The artifacts and the show pieces in the house can be of stone to give a good visual appeal. The pathways in the garden are also an option where stone can be used. Even doors or door knobs can be of stone. Stones are so popular that even

tiles with stone effect are gaining popularity in the market. Stone or rock design tiles are most ideal for interiors as well as exterior walls; be it cladding of balconies, facades of houses or compound walls. Earthy colour variations of these tiles can be stunning when paired with the right interior setting and decor items. If you are planning to use these tiles for walls, try lighter colored designs with the occasional splash of darker design combination to get an overall random natural effect. Though not used frequently like stone, rock is also one of the materials used for interiors. It is specially used in large spaces that give an overall effect. It gives a natural yet royal feel to the dĂŠcor. Pebbles are also used in homes as an artifact or a dĂŠcor element in the garden or patio. Stones create a comforting ambience with organic living.

Exercises to Help Reduce Female Upper Arm Fat Combine cardiovascular exercise for fat-burning with biceps and triceps exercises to reduce female upper arm fat. Perform resistance exercises two or three times each week on nonconsecutive days, and use a challenging resistance to see changes in your arms.

BLAST AWAY THE FAT

Unfortunately, you can't spot reduce fat on your body with specific exercises. Instead, you need to do cardio and burn fat from your entire body, including your upper arms. Train three to five times per week for moderate weight loss, or five to seven days per week for more significant weight loss. Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, and keep your intensity moderate to vigorous. Vigorous stationary cycling, elliptical trainers and running are just a few options that can burn 200 to 300 calories in as little as 30 minutes. Pushups are an effective upper body exercise that works not only your chest, but your shoulders and arms as well. Start with a basic pushup on the floor. Kneel down and place your hands on the floor about twice your shoulder-width. Step one foot out at a time so you are balanced on your hands and toes with your body straight. Lower yourself down until your elbows are 90 degrees or your chest is 1 to 2 inches off the floor. Do eight to 12 reps for two to four sets. To hit your triceps a little more do a closegrip pushup. Bring your hands in so they are directly under your shoulders. Balance your body on your hands and toes. Lower down as far as you can, stopping when you

feel a pulling in your shoulders or your chest is 1 to 2 inches off the floor. Press back up for one rep. Do eight to 12 reps for two to four sets.

PUSH YOUR BODY

Aero cross

CURL IT UP Train your biceps to help tone the muscles along the front of your upper arm. Perform a standing biceps curl with a set of dumbbells. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand. Turn y o u r hands so that y o u r palms face forward. Bend your elbows and curl the weight up towards your shoulders, without moving your upper arms. Lower back down to the start position for one complete rep. Do eight to 12 reps for two to four sets.

One-Arm Triceps Dip

Hold a jump rope with an end in each hand, palms facing forward. Begin skipping, hopping up just enough to allow the rope to pass beneath your feet. Once you've got the rhythm, slowly extend your arms out from your sides as far as possible as you skip. The goal is to make big circles with your arms so you feel as if you're rowing a boat backward.

Sit on the floor with your legs and feet pressed together, knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place your hands about a foot behind your butt, palms shoulder-distance apart, fingers pointing toward your butt. Straighten your arms to raise your butt off the floor. Bend your left elbow and lower your butt as close to the floor as possible without actually touching it. Straighten your left arm; repeat, this time bending right arm. Alternate sides for 60 seconds. To make the move a little easier, try spreading your legs up to 2 feet apart.

Wrist Rotation

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and a 1- to 2-pound dumbbell in each hand, arms extended in front of you at shoulder height, palms up. Quickly rotate your wrists inward as far as possible, then outward. Continue alternating for 60 seconds.

SBI gets its first woman chair in 206 years

MUMBAI : One of the last bastions of male dominance crumbled when the government named Arundhati Bhattacharya as the first woman chair of the 206-year-oldState Bank of India, which together with its subsidiaries, accounts for 22% of the country's bank deposits and 23% of total lending. That's not the only record: Bhattacharya is also the first woman to ever lead a Fortune 500 company in India, and the only woman banker on that list of giants anywhere in the world. Bhattacharya (57), who was earlier managing director and chief finance officer of SBI, takes charge at a time the bank faces pressure of rising bad loans as borrowers find it difficult to meet their repayment obligations in a slowing economy. She also has to restore the confidence of investors who have

dragged down SBI's share price in recent weeks because of this deterioration in asset quality. Although Bhattacharya was the only executive in SBI's senior management with a minimum residual service of two years, the government had decided to waive

this requirement and consider all the four managing directors of the bank. They included Hemant Contractor, A Krishna Kumar and S Vishvanathan. Insiders said that Bhattacharya held her own during the interviews. Bhattacharya, who joined as a probationary officer in 1977, has held key positions in SBI in her 36-year career. She was chief executive of the bank's merchant banking arm, SBI Capital Markets; before that, as chief general manager in charge of new projects, she was actively involved in the launch of several new businesses such as SBI General Insurance, SBI Custodial Services and the SBI Macquarie Infrastructure Fund. During her stint at the bank's New York office, she oversaw external audit and correspondent relations. Bhattacharya's appointment, for three years, may not bring any

major surprises, at least to begin with, as she has worked closely with the outgoing chairman, Pratip Chaudhuri. In a recent interview, Bhattacharya had spoken of the need to get out of what she described as a QSQT—quarter se quarter tak—culture and to take a longer term view of four to six quarters. Listing her priorities as MD she had highlighted capital efficiency, improvement in productivity, investor relations and overall liquidity management. Although there are many instances of women occupying the corner offices in Indian banks, SBI has a special place in India's financial sector as the bank. Besides its sheer size and network of over 15,000 branches, SBI plays a strategic role as banker to the government in its defense and crude oil deals.

GSK aims to market world's first malaria vaccine after successful trials LONDON: British drugmaker Glaxo Smith Kline will seek marketing approval for the world's first malaria vaccine next year after trial data showed the shot significantly cut cases of the disease in African children. The vaccine known as RTS,S was found, after 18 months of followup, to have almost halved the number of malaria cases in young children in the trial, and to have reduced by around a quarter the number of malaria cases in infants. "Based on these data, GSK now intends to submit, in 2014, a regulatory application to the European Medicines Agency (EMA)," GSK, which has been developing the vaccine for three decades, said in a statement. It added that the United Nations health agency, the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO), has indicated it may recommend use of the RTS,S vaccine from as early as 2015 if EMA drugs regulators back its license application. Malaria, a mosquito-borne parasitic disease, kills hundreds of thousands of people a year, mainly babies in the poorest parts of sub-Saharan Africa, and scientists say an effective vaccine

is key to attempts to eradicate it. Yet hopes that RTS,S would be the final answer were dampened last year when results from a finalstage trial with 6,537 babies aged six to 12 weeks showed the shot provided only modest protection, reducing episodes of the disease by 30 percent compared to immunization with a control vaccine. GSK is developing RTS, S with the non-profit PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI), with grant funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to MVI.

"Many millions of malaria cases fill the wards of our hospitals. Progress is being made with bed nets and other measures, but we need more tools to battle this terrible disease," said Halidou Tinto, a lead investigator on the RTS,S trial from Burkina Faso. Previous data sets released from earlier parts of the trial showed the vaccine's efficacy was 65 percent in babies analyzed six months after vaccination, and only around 50 percent in five to 17 month-olds. And further data released earlier this year found RTS, S’s

effectiveness wanes over time, with the shot protecting only 16.8 percent of children over four years. Despite these drawbacks, David Kaslow, vice president of product development at PATH, said RTS,S would serve as a useful additional tool alongside other malaria control measures such as mosquito nets, insecticides and anti-malaria drugs. "Given the huge disease burden of malaria among African children, we cannot ignore what these latest results tell us about the potential for RTS,S to have a measurable and significant impact on the health of millions of young children in Africa," he said in a statement. "This trial continues to show that a malaria vaccine could potentially bring an important additional benefit beyond that provided by the tools already in use." If approved, the vaccine is unlikely to be anything other than neutral for GSK's bottom line. GSK has promised that if RTS,S is given the market go-ahead, it will be priced at cost of manufacture plus a 5 percent margin, and the margin would be reinvested in malaria research.

Dussehra

Victory over sin

It is believed that the celebration of Dussehra started in the 17th century, when the king of Mysore ordered the celebration of the day on a grand scale. Ever since, the day is celebrated with great fervor and energy. There are a lot of mythological tales associated with the day. According to Ramayana, Ravana was killed by Lord Rama on this day as revenge against the cruel act of kidnapping Goddess Sita by the former. Mythology also has it that Goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasura after a long spell of cruelty and oppression by Mahishasura. On the day of Dussehra people visit the Pooja Pandals wearing new clothes, prepare traditional food at home and celebrate the festival with their friends and families. In most other parts of India, plays are organized across cities depicting the story of Ramayana which culminates in the killing of Ravana on this day. Largely, the day is celebrated to commemorate the prevalence of good over evil. The day is celebrated on a large scale in India as well as

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashmi, is a major Indian festival celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvin month according to the Hindu calendar. This year it is celebrated on 13th October. The day culminates a 9 day fasting period of Navratri in the Hindu culture. It also coincides with immersion of the idol of Goddess Durga. The day is celebrated to commemorate the killing of Ravana by Lord Rama and also the killing of demon Mahishasur by Goddess Durga. Dussehra celebration spreads the message of the victory of good over sin. Instead in Bangladesh. The most famous Dussehra celebrations in India are those in the city of Mysore. Today across country Indians are celebrating Dussehra festival, it is mark of victory of goodness over evil. Every year on this day burning the demon Ravana, we feel our society is free from evil or sin but we never realise that burning the demon will not eradicate evil around us or from us. Infact on this day we should take initiative to erradicate the injustice done upon women and children.

of merely burning puppets we should pledge on Dussehra that we will try our level best to shun evil or sin from my life, around us & society as much as we can, only then our country will be best place in the universe to live life and motivation to others. Today there are much violence against women and children that are being committed in our society by the Ravana-like demons, disguised as human beings. Even after years of Ravana’s end the demon is still very

much alive within many human beings in our society. Therefore such demons should be eradicated from our society. The erosion of values, morals & ethics and the substantial imbalance in economic growth are the likely causes for the rise in these crimes. Another major evil in our society namely, the corruption has ensured that the perpetrators of these crimes make a mockery of the law and move freely and without any fear. Even after committing such horrid crimes, when the guilty neither feel any remorse nor get their due punishment, their arrogance and daring only get a boost leading to further crimes. We must stand up and be united to say “enough is enough. We must not be mere spectators to these crimes because our acceptance is indirectly promoting the recurrence of these acts of shame. Let us be more compassionate to zero tolerance to these modernday Ravanas. Let us ignite the courage that is inside all of us to fight and burn down these demons of corruption, crime & cruelty. Let us then celebrate the triumph of good over evil in its true sense.
