TCL Early childhood education students, shown here with Instructor Kelli Boniecki (left), created customized lesson plans last fall for the United Way of the Lowcountry’s Play Partners Program. The early literacy program supports literacy in Pre-K classrooms across Beaufort and Jasper counties.
City of Hardeeville officials presented a $150,000 check to TCL last December to go toward the construction of the college’s Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center to be built at the TCL New River Campus.
Whale Branch Early College High School (WBECHS) students took some time last September to recruit fellow students into the TCL dual enrollment program, which allows students to earn both high school and college credit for the same classes.
“This partnership has given students the unique opportunity to not only develop their own resources for future classrooms but also give back to the community in a meaningful way.”

TCL PLACES IN TOP 100 IN NATIONAL CYBERSECURITY COMPETITION
TCL made the top 100 “power rankings” in late 2024 for its performance in a national cybersecurity competition which included teams from both community colleges and four-year institutions from across the country. TCL’s team was ranked No. 75 out of the 476 colleges and universities that participated in the National Cyber League’s “ethical hacking competition”—or the legal practice of using hacker techniques to test systems for vulnerabilities.

WORKFORCE TRAINING CENTER GROUNDBREAKING DRAWS CROWD
TCL held a groundbreaking celebration for the Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center in April 2024 at the college’s New River Campus. The building’s namesake, retired Gen. Arthur E. Brown Jr., 93, was on hand for the event as well as Beaufort lawmakers, members of TCL Area Commission, Foundation Board of Directors, the S.C. Technical College System, community members, TCL faculty and staff.
When completed, the new facility will sit adjacent to the campus’ Angus Cotton Building and will add 50,000 square feet of space with a capacity for 850 students. New and expanded programs will include manufacturing, automated systems, logistics, business, computer technology and more.

KING ARTHUR BAKING COMPANY VISITS TCL, SPONSORS LIVE COMPETITION
Culinary Dean Jacqueline Orak (left) congratulates Baking & Pastry Student Lauren Wood (right) for her grand-prize winning recipe — “Oscar’s Rum Cake” — in the “Tastes Like Home” Recipe Contest sponsored by King Arthur Baking Company.
The TCL Culinary Institute of the South hosted the King Arthur Baking Company last April for the firstever “Tastes Like Home” recipe competition. The event was opened to area high school and current culinary institute students and held in conjunction with the CIS annual open house. The event drew record numbers and featured cooking demonstrations, tastings and presentations. Seven finalists competed but ultimately, Lauren Wood, a baking and pastry student at the Culinary Institute of the South, took home the grand prize. Wood received an allexpense paid trip to King Arthur’s baking facility in Norwich, Vermont, and her recipe for “Oscar’s Rum Cake” was published on King Arthur’s website.

TCL HOSTS ACCREDITATION COMMITTEE; UNDERGOES REAFFIRMATION PROCESS
After hosting a team of peer evaluators representing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) last fall, TCL went on to make significant progress toward the reaffirmation of its accreditation—a process that colleges undergo every ten years. TCL expects to hear a final decision from the SACSCOC board later in 2025.

Physical Therapist Assistant students practice techniques in the new PTA lab space featuring more storage and this
Students entering the fall 2024 semester of TCL’s physical therapist assistant program were delighted to find a newer, larger lab space. Thanks to renovations on the Beaufort Mather Campus, the new lab in building 6, measures a whopping 1,443 square feet and features an additional extra-large mat table, a laundry area, extra storage space and office space for instructors. The new lab is part of a larger effort underway to improve and enhance classroom and lab space throughout the School of Health Sciences.

BCSD TIDES PROGRAM KICKS OFF AT TCL NEW RIVER CAMPUS
The inaugural Beaufort County School District Tides program is off to a strong start at TCL’s New River campus. The new full-time dual enrollment option allows qualified ninth-graders to take college-level, degree-seeking courses taught by TCL instructors. BCSD Tides students can earn two associate degrees and a technical certificate from TCL in a variety of college and career pathways by the time they graduate high school. The district plans to expand offerings to the TCL Beaufort Campus in the fall of 2025.

TCL LAUNCHES NEW MULTI-CHANNEL “UNWAVERING” CAMPAIGN
TCL’s Marketing and Public Relations team launched a new multi-channel campaign last spring featuring billboards, digital and print ads, mailers and other collateral. The planning and launch of “Unwavering” was timed to follow the announcement of TCL’s new mascot – the Tides. A key aspect of the campaign is the word ‘Unwavering’ which is set against a background reminiscent of waves and paired with specific key messages. The overriding theme is that, like the Tides, TCL students are steadfast and unmoved.

STUDENTS
TCL Class of 2024
TCL recognized more than 300 students at its annual commencement ceremony held in May. Graduates received certificate, diploma and/or associate degrees from more than 60 programs of study including nursing, computer technology, early care and education, business administration, culinary arts and many more. Importantly, most of these new graduates will go to work in local hospitals, construction companies, small businesses and more right here across the Lowcountry. Also of note, 36 graduates were high school students who earned college degrees and certificates through the dual enrollment program, enabling them to graduate college before even officially graduating high school.
“We are testaments to our resilience, dedication and perseverance. We balanced work with family commitments and college-level classes often
juggling multiple responsibilities and commitments.”

The TCL Foundation
Established to serve the Technical College of the Lowcountry, The TCL Foundation is a taxexempt 501(c)(3) organization and accepts contributions on behalf of the college. Like community colleges nationally, TCL relies on local support to advance its mission.
TCL is state-assisted—not state-supported— and receives 18% of its operating budget from the State of South Carolina. In order to keep tuition affordable, the college depends on generous philanthropic support to sustain and expand its facilities, academic programs, student support services and more.
Donor gifts are instrumental in allowing TCL to serve more students and graduate more skilled workers. Thereby, donors who ensure TCL’s future also ensure a stronger local economy and better business climate.

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS:
The 6th Annual Chefs Table Benefit raised more than $210,000 to support TCL and the Culinary Institute of the South. Held last November at the Harbour Town Clubhouse at The Sea Pines Resort, the event brought together 300 guests for an evening of fine dining and community support. The sold-out event featured a five-course dinner and appetizer showcase prepared by approximately 18 Lowcountry chefs, special guests and CIS students. Special thanks to the event sponsors including Gallo Winery, The Sea Pines Resort, US Foods, South Atlantic Bank, Charles Sampson Real Estate Group and Alpha Graphics. Proceeds support students, faculty and programs across the college.

ADVOCATES
Faculty & Staff Donors
TCL SUPPORTING TCL: Each year, TCL Faculty and Staff join together in support of the college and give back. Faculty and staff choose to give to student scholarship, dedicated departmental funds, the President’s Fund and to the Guarantor’s Program—the college’s Student Emergency Fund—just to name a few. Last year’s annual Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign, “I Give,” raised more than $15,000 for TCL students and programs. Thank you to these generous employees for giving back and helping advance TCL’s mission and vision.
“I give because I’m dedicated to helping our community grow and thrive. The expansion of our student body and the development of our college’s programs are truly rewarding to see.”
Ashleigh Williams Administrative Services
