Don’t Quit! Universities’ Responsibility to Creatively Keep Teachers Teaching

Given the teacher shortage in special education, researchers designed a mixedmethods study focused on the lived experiences of special education teachers who teach adaptive curriculum. Study participants are teachers who took coursework through GMU’s Adapted Curriculum licensure program within the last five years. Through a questionnaire and interviews and focus groups, this study discovered: 1) what the university did well in preparing them for their career in teaching, 2) what the university did not prepare them for, and 3) how the university could support them in their first couple of years after they graduated to keep them in their classrooms.

"Am I an important character in other people’s lives?": Influences of Literature and the English Classroom Culture among Black Female Students’ Sense of Belonging

Elements of identity formation and knowledge creation center around literature. Those with power are often amplified in literature, yet where does this concentrated emphasis leave those who may not be as privileged? How does this impact one’s sense of self? Using semi-structured interviews and document analysis, this research explores the racialized and gendered experiences of Black girls in secondary English classes as a result of their assigned literature and classroom culture. Evidence indicates that the lack of representation in literature and the English classroom setting impacts Black female learners. Results and recommendations can be used by educators and researchers to support students’ learning and well-being.

An Informed Exploration of the Technology-Supported Learning Needs and Preferences of First-Time Fathers in the Perinatal Period

The purpose of this study is to understand the learning needs and preferences of firsttime fathers in order to design a technology-supported perinatal learning intervention that is father-inclusive and father-focused. This study will contribute to the existing body of research in the field of perinatal education through an instructional design and design-based research approach, which allows for a learner-focused approach to minimize barriers to access and learner exclusion. Utilizing adult learning theory and principles of andragogy, this study will address the problem of inadequate formal and informal father-inclusive perinatal education by understanding the unique needs and preferences of first-time fathers in the perinatal period.
