WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

2023 STUDENT RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM!

George Mason University, and more specifically, the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), seek to enhance the scope and depth of our research and scholarly activities and foster a culture of student scholarship.

The CEHD Student Research Symposium is back in-person for the 2022-2023 academic year to spotlight and celebrate the research studies conducted by our undergraduate and graduate students, in collaboration with CEHD faculty mentors.

The annual symposium is coordinated by the CEHD Office of Student and Academic Affairs.

6:20 PM -7:00 PM

Each presentation will last 6 minutes. The order of presenters is as follows:

The Effects of a Law Enforcement Duty Belt and Vest on Muscular Activity While Walking

Law enforcement officers are at a high risk for musculoskeletal injury due to the physical nature of their occupation. Anecdotally, carrying their equipment on a duty belt contributes to low back pain and loading that equipment onto a vest, instead, reduces these instances of pain. The purpose of this study was to assess if the muscular activity of the low back, abdominals, and thighs was different between a duty belt and a vest while walking. The results of this study could provide quantitative evidence to support specific types of load bearing equipment used by law enforcement officers.

Perspectives and Experiences of Immigrant Families with Special Education in the United States

The United States is a country representing a diverse population holding a variety of cultural beliefs, practices, and experiences. These populations are present in our public school system and it is likely that special education teachers in the United States will directly support and interact with students and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. In special education the role of culture cannot be minimized, and it is important that special educators are both aware and reflective about cultural differences that may be present among their students and students’ families. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the continuing development of a pilot survey targeted toward developing an understanding of immigrant family cultural perceptions of disability and access to special education in the United States.

Sociocultural Influences on Body Image Concerns in Men of Color - A Structural Equation Modeling Study

Given the consensus that sociocultural experiences may significantly impact the health and well-being of people of color, this study aimed to assess the mechanism through which sociocultural factors influence men of color’s body image perceptions. Specifically, using a structural equation modeling approach, this study investigated how interpersonal and media pressure, as well as ethnic-racial identities and perceptions, impact body dissatisfaction related to muscularity, body fact, and height in men of color. Additionally, this study explored how this mechanism is moderated across different ethnic-racial groups.

An Analysis of Meaningful Work of Hospitality Employees in Relation to Service Robots

With rapid development of AI technology, the use of service robots is expanding in the hospitality industry. Little is known about how employees perceive an actual working relationship with service robots and how robots may impact meaningful work among hospitality employees. We found that experiencing meaning in a job was important to employees and factors that constitute meaningful work remain the same even under the work environment with service robots. This study contributes to the understanding of successful partnership between service robots and human employees.

Community Building in Spanish Dual Language Classrooms During COVID-19

This qualitative research study examines the experiences of Spanish-language and English-language Spanish dual language education program teachers in developing teacher-student relationships during the simultaneous hybrid in-person and online educational structures of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Structured interviews and classroom observations were conducted with one Spanish-language teacher and one Englishlanguage teacher who work with a shared roster of students. Findings reaffirmed the importance of the development of community to increase student engagement and a sense of belonging, while also highlighting a discrepancy in students’ level of engagement in community-building depending on the language of instruction.
