Get ready for a racing showdown

Les 20 et 21 septembre, les F50 du SailGP régatent en eau douce. Le Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix Geneva est le fruit d’une succession d’idées visionnaires. Faire voler des bateaux, d’abord. Puis lancer une flotte de catamarans survitaminés en plein cœur d’une cité lacustre. En rejoignant le circuit du SailGP, Genève entre dans une nouvelle dimension. Elle s’inscrit parmi les hauts lieux de la voile internationale. Elle met aussi à l’honneur ses enfants du lac : Sébastien, Maud, Arnaud, Bryan et Arno… Ces ambassadeurs planétaires ont usé leurs premiers fonds de cirés dans les écoles de voile du Léman. Depuis des mois, la date est gravée dans leurs cœurs. Mais face à eux, l’élite mondiale n’a pas de sentiments. Il va y avoir du sport.

Traduit en anglais, ce magazine est un outil de compréhension. Il présente les équipes, donne la parole aux organisateurs et accompagne les spectateurs dans la découverte de ce circuit révolutionnaire. Il y a six ans, SailGP n’existait pas. Aujourd’hui, il redéfinit la voile mondiale.

On 20 and 21 September, the SailGP F50s will race on the fresh water of Lake Geneva. The Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix Geneva is the result of a succession of visionary ideas. It started with flying boats and led to a fleet of high-octane catamarans racing right in the epicentre of the lakeside city.

By joining the SailGP circuit, Geneva is elevating its profile to new heights. It is one of the top international sailing venues. It also proudly celebrates the sons and daughters of the lake: Sébastien, Maud, Arnaud, Bryan and Arno. These global ambassadors began their journey in Lake Geneva’s sailing schools, where they first wore through their all-weather gear. They have carried this date close to their hearts for months. But the global elite competing with them will show no mercy. We can anticipate fierce racing. Translated into English, this magazine aims to offer insights into the race. It showcases the teams, offers a platform for the organisers, and guides spectators as they learn about this innovative circuit. Six years ago, SailGP did not exist. Today, it is redefining sailing worldwide.

Le CEO de SailGP évoque son attachement à Genève et sa fierté d’y faire découvrir le circuit international des F50. Il revient aussi sur les enjeux de cette étape suisse du championnat. SailGP CEO Russell Coutts speaks about the excitement of a first event in Geneva, a place where he is always happy to return to. Interview.

Quelle importance revêt pour vous le Rolex

Switzerland SailGP ?

Russell Coutts : Nous sommes très fiers d’amener la ligue en Suisse. L’équipe suisse va pouvoir régater devant son public pour la première fois. Le plan d’eau de Genève est une plateforme parfaite pour faire découvrir notre championnat et tous ses aspects spectaculaires. Les tribunes seront idéalement placées pour que le public vive les courses au plus près. Et les régates seront, comme toujours, très disputées.

How important is it to hold the Rolex SailGP Championship event in Geneva?

Russell Coutts: We are really proud about bringing the league to Switzerland. It’s a home market for the SUI team and to bring SailGP, the most exciting racing, on water right into Geneva is a good opportunity to showcase our league in a great way. We selected a place on the lake where we can build the grandstand and bring the fans really close to the action. I think the venue will be a perfect fit. The racing is hugely competitive. And that’s what the fans want to see. They want to see close races. And in Switzerland, they will probably want the Swiss to do well too.

“Switzerland holds some special memories”

C’est ce que les fans attendent : de l’intensité, du suspense. En Suisse, ils auront aussi à cœur de soutenir leur équipe nationale.

C’est impressionnant à la télévision. Mais en vrai ?

En vrai, c’est tout simplement autre chose. On ne réalise pas à quel point c’est extrême tant que l’on n’y assiste pas. Voir toute la flotte virer à la première bouée, à quelques mètres du rivage, c’est saisissant.

Ce qui surprend souvent les spectateurs, c’est la densité de l’action. Tous les bateaux sont identiques : ce sont les marins qui font la différence. La ligue réunit les meilleurs navigateurs du monde.

It’s spectacular on TV but even more when you see it in person… It transforms the viewing experience. It’s hard to fully comprehend how extreme it is when you watch it on TV. Watching the fleet rounding mark one, right in front of the fans, is spectacular. Most of them are blown away and say that they never expected anything like it. It’s fast, intense,action-packed racing. Every team races on identical boats. So it’s the skill of the sailors and not the technology that determines the outcome. That’s the essence of SailGP. And, of course, we have the best sailors in the world racing on some of the most challenging boats ever designed. That is the way the league is designed and its great racing. And we’re looking forward to bringing this experience to the Swiss fans.

You have raced on this lake. What conditions do you expect?

I did a little bit of racing on the lake when I was living in Switzerland. In September, the wind is a little bit more consistent, and we will proba-

Vous avez déjà navigué sur ce lac. Quelles conditions attendez-vous ?

J’ai fait un peu de régate sur ce lac quand je vivais en Suisse. En septembre, le vent est un peu plus régulier. On programmera sans doute les courses assez tard dans la journée, car c’est à ce moment-là qu’une brise d’été a tendance à se lever.

Nous ajusterons le parcours en fonction de notre expérience, et l’équipe suisse aura un vrai avantage avec sa connaissance du plan d’eau. Nos F50 sont performants même dans le petit temps.

D’ailleurs, un nouveau foil et un nouveau safran, pensés pour les conditions légères, seront probablement utilisés lors du Rolex Switzerland SailGP Grand Prix.

Qu’attendez-vous du public suisse ?

Nous ne nous adressons pas seulement aux initiés. Il n’est pas nécessaire d’être un expert pour apprécier SailGP. La plus grande partie de notre public ne s’y connaît pas en voile. Beaucoup viennent pour l’ambiance. Nous aimons créer une atmosphère conviviale en alliant l’expérience sportive à la culture locale ; permettre au public d’assister à de belles courses tout en passant un bon moment au bord de l’eau. Les fans suisses vont vraiment apprécier cela.

Et pour vous, personnellement, que représente ce retour à Genève ?

C’est toujours spécial pour moi. J’ai vécu ici avec ma famille, j’y ai tissé des liens forts. Mes trois plus jeunes enfants sont nés à Genève. Revenir, revoir des visages connus, me promener dans des lieux qui ont compté… tout cela a beaucoup de valeur à mes yeux. Je suis heureux de pouvoir associer cette dimension personnelle à un événement aussi marquant que le SailGP.

bly schedule the racing quite late in the day when you to tend to get a summer breeze. We will set up the rules based on experiences and, of course, the Swiss team will be able to help as they have the experience of sailing in the championship. The F50’s are designed to perform in light wind. We currently have new light wind foils and light wind rudders in their final stages of development, so these might also be ready for use ahead of the Swiss event.

What do you expect from the Swiss crowd?

SailGP isn’t just for sailing fans. You don’t need to be a sailor to enjoy the action. A large part of our audience is from outside the sailing world. Some fans attend, because they just like the atmosphere. We like people to enjoy the atmosphere, experience great racing, and have fun on the waterside. It’s about combining racing with local culture and good honest fun. The Swiss fans will really love that.

For you personally, is it something special to come back to Switzerland with your SailGP success?

It’s always special for me to come back to Switzerland. I love visiting Geneva. It has some very special memories for me, of course. I feel comfortable in Switzerland. I always enjoy coming back and seeing the people that I became friends with when I was living here with my family. My three youngest children were born in Geneva. It definitely holds some special memories.

Un groupe de tête de quatre bateaux (NZL, AUS, ESP, GBR), un groupe central dont l’équipe suisse fait partie (CAN, FRA, SUI) et des poursuivants (ITA, DEN, BRA, GER, USA) : voilà le découpage révélé après la septième étape de Portsmouth. Trois groupes séparés par une dizaine de points. Un classement très parlant qui témoigne autant de la qualité que de la régularité des équipes. À deux manches de la fin de saison, le Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix s’annonce sous haute tension. Les écarts au classement sont infimes.

Le vainqueur de l’America’s Cup, le Kiwi Peter Burling a fermement l’intention d’emporter son premier trophée. Il devra composer avec une concurrence directe affûtée : l’équipe australienne de Tom Slingsby a gagné les trois premières saisons. Diego Botin et son équipe espagnole ont mis fin à cette hégémonie l’an passé. Les Anglais de Dylan Fletcher revendiquent la victoire, eux aussi.

En voile, comme dans d’autres sports, la régularité paie. Du côté des équipes du groupe central, on vise la victoire de Grand Prix. Les Canadiens et les Français ont chacun eu la leur.

La Suisse, elle, a raté de peu la sienne. Une avarie du système hydraulique lui a chipé la première place du podium à Portsmouth, en juillet. Peu importe. L’équipe de Sébastien Schneiter a appris

Following the seventh event in Portsmouth, the standings reveal a leading group of four boats (NZL, AUS, ESP, GBR), a middle tier featuring the Swiss team (CAN, FRA, SUI), and a chasing pack (ITA, DEN, BRA, GER, USA). Three groups separated by around ten points. It is a clear ranking that reflects both the quality and consistency of the teams. With two events to go before the end of the season, the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix is shaping up to be a high-voltage affair. The gaps in the rankings are razor-thin. The America’s Cup winner, Kiwi Peter Burling, has every intention of winning his first trophy. He will face stiff direct competition from Tom Slingsby’s Australian team, which won the first three seasons. Diego Botin and his Spanish team brought its winning streak to an end last year. Dylan Fletcher’s English team is also determined to win. As in other sports, consistency pays off in sailing. The teams in the middle tier are chasing a Grand Prix victory. à gommer ses complexes devant les géants de la discipline. Au moment de boucler ce magazine, rien ne nous dit que les étapes allemandes et françaises n’ont pas réservé de belles surprises helvétiques.

En queue de peloton, les nouveaux arrivants que sont l’Italie de Ruggero Tita et le Brésil de la première femme barreuse du circuit, Martine Grael, gardent leur mot à dire. Idem pour les Danois et les Allemands. Les Américains ont déjà accroché un podium à Dubaï, en tout début de saison. Mais SailGP est aussi une plateforme d’innovation. Bien que monotype, le bateau évolue constamment. L’un des objectifs du circuit est d’améliorer les performances des catamarans dans le petit temps. Cette année, les foils en T ont fait leur apparition, avec plusieurs modèles selon la force du vent attendue. Moins visible, le logiciel de contrôle des fonctionnalités du F50 a également été mis à jour. Selon Julien di

Une prochaine amélioration est déjà dans toutes les têtes, des propulseurs devrait permettre aux bateaux de décoller plus tôt dans les petits airs. Il n’est pas impossible que ces tests aient lieu lors des entraînements, à Genève. À l’image de son créateur Russell Coutts, SailGP n’arrête jamais d’innover.

At the rear of the pack, newcomers Italy, with Ruggero Tita, and Brazil with the circuit’s first female skipper, Martine Grael, are not done yet. The same goes for the Danes and the Germans. As for the Americans, they clinched a podium finish in Dubai at the start of the season. SailGP also serves as a platform for innovation. While the boats are one design, they are continually evolving. One key goal of the circuit is to improve the catamarans’ performance in light air. This year, T-shaped foils made their appearance, with multiple designs tailored to the expected wind strength. Less obvious, the software managing the F50’s functions has also been upgraded. According to Julien di Biase, SailGP’s Chief Operating Officer, “Every Grand Prix is about finding the best solutions. They are then applied uniformly to the twelve competing boats.”

The next anticipated upgrade is already a hot topic: thrusters are expected to help the boats lift off earlier in light air. It is entirely possible that tests could be carried out during training sessions in Geneva. SailGP never ceases to innovate, just like Russell Coutts its creator.

Un championnat global et annuel dans des villes, se disputant à armes égales sur des catamarans ultra rapides. Des régates courtes et dynamiques, un produit TV réussi. La formule paie. Lorsqu’ils ont lancé le projet en 2019 avec le soutien financier de Larry Ellison, Russell Coutts et son bras droit Andy Thompson, directeur général de SailGP, n’auraient jamais imaginé une croissance aussi rapide. Lors de la saison 1, la ligue comptait six équipes et cinq épreuves. Aujourd’hui, la société SailGP est passée de 10 à 250 personnes à plein temps et, pour sa 5e saison, le Rolex SailGP Championship comprend treize épreuves sur cinq continents et réunit douze équipes de nationalités différentes. Une croissance exponentielle. « Tout va beaucoup plus vite que nous l’avions espéré, reconnaît Coutts. Pour ce qui est de l’audience live, par exemple, au départ, nous visions 5 millions de téléspectateurs. Aujourd’hui, nous avons atteint 21,1 millions. De loin, la meilleure pour une compétition de voile. C’est grâce aux atouts de SailGP : un championnat très disputé et la fréquence des épreuves. »

Et du spectacle aussi. Avec des bouées situées à quelques mètres à peine des gradins, le public sur site en prend plein la vue. Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour épater au-delà des amateurs de régates. Rendre la voile accessible au grand public, la sortir de son statut de sport trop longtemps réservé à une élite connaisseuse, c’était ça aussi l’objectif de Russell Coutts. Le quintuple vainqueur de la Coupe de l’America a voulu démocratiser son sport en offrant un produit attractif pour le plus grand nombre, télégénique, et viable commercialement.

Hosted in a variety of cities, this annual global championship is raced on fast high-performance one-design catamarans. The races are short and fast-paced, making for engaging TV that pays off.

When the project launched in 2019 with financial support from Larry Ellison, Russell Coutts, and his right-hand man, SailGP’s Managing Director, Andy Thompson, such swift growth could never have been predicted.

In season 1, the league had 6 teams and counted 5 events. Today, SailGP has grown from 10 to 250 full-time employees. Now in its 5th season, the Rolex SailGP Championship features 13 events on five continents and showcases 12 international teams. Exponential growth.

“Everything is moving much faster than we had hoped,” says Coutts. At the outset, our live audience target was 5 million viewers. This has now grown to 21.1 million. This is by far the largest audience for a sailing race. SailGP’s key strengths are its fiercely competitive championship and the regularity of the events.”

« La voile ne proposait aucun circuit professionnel annuel. Avec Russell, nous avons dirigé la Coupe de l’America pendant plusieurs années et l’on s’est rendu compte qu’il était difficile de fidéliser des partenaires et des sponsors en raison du changement de gouvernance à chaque nouveau vainqueur et des budgets qui souvent explosent, explique Andy Thompson, directeur général de SailGP. Nous voulions créer un championnat régulier basé sur le concept de propriété commerciale créant de la valeur sur le long terme comme il en existe dans la majorité des sports professionnels. Nous avons étudié ce qui se fait ailleurs et avons mis en place un système de franchises. » Des franchises dont le prix aujourd’hui s’élève à 50 millions de dollars. Le but était aussi de contrôler les coûts pour permettre à la ligue de se développer sainement. « Nous avons fixé un plafond budgétaire de 10 millions par équipe par saison, précise Thompson. Nous voulions offrir à chaque équipe les mêmes droits. » Et pour attirer les meilleurs marins du monde, les prize money sont conséquents : 12,8 millions de dollars par saison. Tout cela est possible grâce au soutien des sponsors. En novembre 2024, SailGP a bénéficié de l’arrivée de Rolex comme sponsor titre du championnat. « Rolex est le partenaire de la ligue mais aussi de l’événement de Genève. Ils ont signé un partenariat de 10 ans avec nous. C’est un élément fort de la croissance de SailGP, se félicite encore Russell Coutts. Nous avons des accords à long terme avec nos sponsors, ce qui nous permet de faire évoluer la ligue ensemble sur la durée. On est très fiers que Rolex, marque unique, soit notre partenaire. Et nous travaillons aussi avec d’autres marques de renom comme Oracle, Emirates et DP World. » C’est ce qui s’appelle une success-story !

And an action-packed show. With the markers located just a few metres from the stands, the shoreside spectators get to see quite a performance. It has all the ingredients needed to attract more than the usual regatta fans. Russel Coutts wanted to make sailing something everyone could enjoy, not just a sport for a small group of experts. The five-time winner of the America’s Cup aimed to make the sport popular by creating a product that would appeal to a wide audience, with great TV and commercial potential.

“There were no annual professional circuits in sailing. Russell and I managed the America’s Cup for several years and came to realise that retaining partners and sponsors was challenging, due to the shifting governance with each new winner, and unpredictable budget increases,” explains Andy Thompson, Managing Director of SailGP. We wanted to create a regular championship based on the concept of commercial ownership that creates long-term value similar to that seen in most professional sports. We looked at what was being done elsewhere and introduced a franchise system.” These franchises are currently priced at 50 million dollars. The goal was also to manage costs effectively to enable the league to develop sustainably. “We set a budget cap of 10 million dollars per team, per season,” says Thompson. The aim was to provide each team with equal rights.” And to attract the best sailors in the world. The prize money is substantial: 12.8 million dollars per season.

All of this is made possible by the support of sponsors. In November 2024, SailGP welcomed Rolex as the title sponsor of the championship. “Rolex is both a sponsor of the league and the Geneva event. They signed a 10-year sponsorship with us. This is a driving feature of SailGP’s growth,” continues Russell Coutts. We have long-term agreements with our sponsors. This allows us to develop the league together over the long term. We are proud to count the exceptional brand Rolex among our sponsors. We also collaborate with other well-known brands such as Oracle, Emirates and DP World. Now that is what you call a success story!

De l’Optimist au F50… De la voiture à pédales à la Formule 1. Il y a comme une évidence pour la Suisse à voir ses plus fins régatiers représenter la nation dans l’épreuve de voile ultime. Et qui d’autre que Team Tilt, créé par Alexandre Schneiter, pour relever le défi ? Le circuit correspond parfaitement à l’ADN de cette équipe qui a fait et vu grandir les talents suisses de la voile depuis dix ans. Réunis autour de Sébastien Schneiter, Team Tilt a brillé sur les circuits monotypes lémaniques et internationaux. Des victoires aux Bol d’Or en D35, aux championnats du monde de GC32, des médailles mondiales en 49ers, trois participations aux Jeux olympiques et deux Youth America’s Cup marquées par une superbe 3e place aux Bermudes en 2017. presque logiquement le circuit de SailGP lancé dans la foulée de la Cup de 2019 par Larry Ellison et Russell Coutts. Les garanties financières apportées par le milliardaire et le savoir-faire sportif légendaire du Néo-Zélandais ont très vite convaincu que ce championnat avait un bel avenir. Et que celui-ci passerait notamment par la Suisse, et bien sûr, par Genève. Dès l’annonce de la création de Switzerland SailGP Team, Alexandre Schneiter avait émis l’idée de la venue des meilleurs marins du monde sur le Léman. Le lancement de l’équipe n’est pas facilité par le retour en America’s Cup d’Alinghi Red Bull Racing qui aimante les appétits des jeunes navigateurs. Peu importe finalement. Depuis trois ans, Sébastien Schneiter est fidèle au poste. Il grandit. L’équipe grandit elle aussi. Sur l’eau, bien sûr, et en dehors, également. Le sérieux du projet séduit les sponsors qui s’engagent dans la durée.

À bord, la méthode Tilt est toujours identique depuis plus de dix ans. Avec du travail, de l’humilité, mais surtout pas de complexe. Depuis trois ans, la progression est constante malgré de nombreux changements au sein de l’équipage. La dispersion des talents suisses entre SailGP et America’s Cup à Barcelone n’est désormais plus qu’un souvenir. the moment the creation of Switzerland SailGP Team was announced, Alexandre Schneiter voiced the idea of bringing the best sailors in the world to Lake Geneva, since SailGP is all about flying catamarans battling with each other in iconic locations.

Sébastien Schneiter, a native of Geneva, joined SailGP in 2022—unfazed by the challenge and driven by a passion for speed and high performance, with downhill skiing, paragliding, wing foils and flying boats. His DNA ticked all the boxes. He brought everyone who had been part of the Tilt adventure on board. The launch of the team was not helped by the return of Alinghi Red Bull Racing to the America’s Cup, which attracted significant interest from young sailors. In the end, it did not matter. For three years, Sébastien Schneiter remained dedicated to the team. His experience grew. The team also grew, on and off the water. The project’s professionalism appealed to sponsors, encouraging them to make a long-term commitment.

For over a decade, the Team Tilt approach on the water has remained consistent – rooted in hard work, humility, and, above all, faith in their own abilities. In the last three years, despite a number of crew changes, the team has made steady progress. The scattering of Swiss talent between SailGP and the America’s Cup in Barcelona is now a thing of the past. For its third season on the circuit, the Switzerland SailGP Team has focused its top talent in a single, unified effort. With Sébastien Schneiter as skipper, alongside Arnaud Psarofaghis and Bryan Mettraux, Team Tilt’s key members are back together.

Following a half-season in 2025 marked by some inconsistency, Switzerland currently sits mid-table in a fleet that includes sailors whose achievements extend far beyond world medals, Olympic titles, and wins in the America’s Cup and SailGP. En effet, si l’on excepte une légère ombre occasionnelle en provenance de l’America’s Cup, c’est bien le championnat de Russell Coutts qui prend aujourd’hui toute la lumière des bateaux à foils. De Peter Burling (NZL) à Diego Botin (ESP), en passant par Tom Slingsby (AUS) et Hannah Mills (GBR), les douze équipages nationaux sont devenus le rendez-vous des étoiles de mer. Un miracle que l’on doit à une politique généreuse de prize money – l’an passé, plus de 12 millions de dollars ont été redistribués – mais aussi à l’audience acquise par les équipes de communication du circuit.

Comme dans tous les sports de véhicules, la monotypie fait la part belle aux qualités humaines. Chaque équipe se doit de regrouper les meilleurs éléments autour de son barreur. C’est aujourd’hui chose faite. Issus des séries olympiques comme le 49er, des petits bateaux volants comme le Moth, la plupart des marins SailGP ont désormais plus volé que navigué. Les barreurs ont le sang-froid des pilotes automobiles, les stratèges prennent des décisions à la seconde, les régleurs se préoccupent de la qualité du vol et les wincheurs développent des énergies phénoménales en situation de déséquilibre permanent. En quelques années, la voile sportive a décuplé sa vitesse. Au SailGP, les marins réinventent un métier séculaire. Ils développent de nouvelles aptitudes, étudient des milliers de « datas » pour affiner leurs gestes. If flying sailing yachts were represented by a country, SailGP would be the capital. The America’s Cup might cast a shadow now and then, but Russell Coutts’s Championship is clearly stealing the limelight when it comes to racing foiling yachts. Competitive sailing has become ten times faster in just a few years. Sailors are redefining a time-honoured profession through SailGP. They are building new skills and studying vast amounts of data to perfect their techniques. La série des F50 a été lancée en 2017 pour la 35e America’s Cup. Strictement monotype, la série fait la part belle aux qualités sportives des meilleurs marins du monde. Elle n’a cessé d’évoluer depuis la création du SailGP. Le catamaran tire sa puissance d’une aile principale et d’un foc. Trois configurations d’aile sont possibles en fonction du vent. À partir d’une certaine vitesse, le F50 peut s’élever sur ses foils et quitter le mode archimédien. On dit alors qu’il vole.

The F50 class was launched in 2017 for the 35th America’s Cup. Strictly a one-design class, it highlights the racing skills of the best sailors in the world. TEMPS DE VOL

Le temps qu’un bateau passe à foiler, 100 % du parcours étant le Graal. Lorsque cet objectif est atteint, la coque du bateau ne touche jamais l’eau tout au long du parcours.

FLY TIME

The amount of time a boat spends foiling, with 100 percent being the holy grail around the race course. If this is achieved, the boat’s hull never touches the water.

VIRER DE BORD

Manœuvre visant à changer de bord en passant par la position face au vent. Un voilier ne peut pas avancer face au vent. Il doit obligatoirement changer de bord pour remonter dans l’axe du vent.

TACK

A maneuver to change course. As a sailing boat can’t proceed directly into the wind, the bow of the boat is turned through the wind so that the wind changes from one side of the boat to the other.

Parcours Course

Les parcours SailGP font la part belle aux spectateurs. Volontairement proches des gradins, ils permettent à la foule d’admirer les F50 de près. Les bouées sont placées de manière à favoriser les bords de largue, l’allure la plus spectaculaire avec les foilers. Il y a sept portions de parcours (7 legs). L’arrivée se fait également au reaching. Les courses durent environ 15 minutes. Le vendredi, l’entraînement compte quatre manches. Le samedi, quatre manches également. Trois régates en flotte sont disputées le dimanche avec la finale pour les trois meilleurs au classement du week-end. En cas d’évolution du vent, le parcours est modifié par le comité de course grâce à un système de bouées robotisées.

Le départ

Comme dans toutes les courses à la voile, le départ comprend un compte à rebours avec l’ouverture de la ligne au top. La dernière minute est le moment le plus palpitant. Si un concurrent mord la ligne, il doit se recaler à l’arrière de la flotte.

L’arbitrage

Avec une flotte de douze F50 volants pouvant potentiellement approcher les 100 km/h, SailGP est un circuit sous haute surveillance. Les règles de course y sont primordiales. Une équipe d’arbitres y veille, en direct et à distance. Les catamarans sont équipés d’un système GPS de haute précision qui permet de les localiser en temps réel au centimètre près. Ils annoncent et distribuent les pénalités en direct. Une fois le cas jugé, la réparation sur l’eau est immédiate. L’équipe fautive est obligée de se placer derrière l’équipe lésée où ralentir afin de perdre une certaine distance.

Les pénalités

Au regard de certains faits, l’organisateur peut attribuer des points de pénalité aux équipes. Des comportements dangereux ou fortement dommageables peuvent justifier la diminution des points au classement du Grand Prix et donc, au classement général SailGP.

Le coaching

Chaque équipe dispose d’un coaching à terre. Les coachs peuvent communiquer avec l’équipe. Ils les aident en direct à prendre des décisions tactiques et stratégiques.

The SailGP race courses are great for spectators. Deliberately close to the stands, the crowd can admire the F50s up close. The marks are positioned to encourage broad reaches, the most spectacular point of sail for foilers. There are seven legs in the race. The finish can also be on a reach. The runs last roughly 15 minutes. On Fridays, there are four training legs. There are also four legs on Saturday. Three fleet races are held on Sunday, with the final for the top three finishers over the weekend. The race committee uses robotic marks to change the course in response to changing wind conditions.

The Start

As in all sailing races, a countdown precedes the start, with the start line opening at the starting signal. The last minute is the most exciting part. If a competitor crosses the line prematurely, they must move to the rear of the fleet.

Race Course Marshalls

With a fleet of twelve flying F50s that can potentially reach speeds of 100 km/h (over 60 mph), SailGP is a closely monitored circuit. The race rules are of paramount importance. A team of course marshalls monitors the race on the water and remotely. Each catamaran is fitted with a high-precision GPS system that tracks its position in real time with centimetre-level accuracy. Penalties are communicated and enforced instantly. Once a decision is made, they are immediately applied on the water. The offending team is required to fall behind the disadvantaged team or reduce speed to establish a set distance.

Penalties

In specific situations, the organiser may award penalty points to teams. Behaviour deemed dangerous or detrimental to others may warrant a points penalty in the Grand Prix ranking, thereby influencing the team’s standing in the overall SailGP leaderboard.

Genève, bien qu’éloignée des mers, rassemble une forte communauté de navigateurs. La Suisse a cumulé un nombre de réussites incroyable dans ce sport. » Les mots sont signés Sir Ben Ainslie. Pour les passionnés de voile, la voix du quintuple médaillé olympique britannique fait office d’évangile. Vainqueur de l’America’s Cup en 2013 à San Francisco, Ainslie est Témoignage Rolex depuis 2019. Il incarne à lui seul un demi-siècle de voile sportive, aujourd’hui projeté sur la rade genevoise.

Septante ans de régates prestigieuses

Rolex soutient SailGP depuis sa création en 2019. En effet, cela fait presque septante ans (1958) que Rolex trace son sillage sur les océans,

For sailing fans, the voice of the five-time British Olympic medallist is like gospel. Winner of the America’s Cup in 2013 in San Francisco, Ainslie has been a Rolex Testimonee since 2019. He embodies half a century of competitive sailing, now showcased on Geneva’s waters.

Seventy years of iconic races

Rolex has supported SailGP from its inception in 2019. Since 1958 – nearly seventy years, it has been making its mark on the world’s oceans –from Sydney to Hobart, including the iconic Fastnet Rock off the Irish coast, and the dramatic volcanic surroundings of the Mediterranean’s Middle Sea Race. A longtime sponsor of renowned races, the Geneva-based company has rooted its precision watchmaking in the challenging maritime world, where marine chronometers and stars have guided sailors across the seas since the 18th century. Pioneers Sir Francis Chichester, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Bernard Moitessier each wore a Rolex on their respective circumnavigations. Even today, time is still essential to the start of the F50s competing in SailGP to the hundredth of a second – a timing that Sir Ben Ainslie executes flawlessly.

Impact League and sustainable development

Busy last year winning the America’s Cup preliminary races, Ben Ainslie has handed over the helm. He is now in charge of the GBR project. Aboard the Emirates GBR F50, Hannah Mills, a Rolex Testimonee since 2022, is the strategist. Three-time Olympic medallist, including two gold medals, she is very familiar with the road to Lausanne, just across the lake. She is a sustainable development ambassador for the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Last year, Hannah and her team won the Impact League. Running alongside SailGP, this competition assesses each team’s efforts towards sustainable development. Hannah Mills has nothing but praise for it: “It’s so innovative, there’s nothing like it in the world of sport,” she says enthusiastically. “The desire to drive global change through sailing resonates deeply with me. It’s an honour to help develop this league in collaboration with SailGP.”

Elle est ambassadrice du développement durable au sein du Comité international olympique (CIO). L’an dernier, Hannah et son team ont gagné l’Impact League. Cette compétition parallèle tient compte des efforts de chaque équipe en matière de développement durable. Hannah Mills ne tarit pas d’éloge à son sujet : « C’est tellement innovant, il n’y a rien de comparable dans le monde du sport, s’enthousiasme Mills. L’envie de créer un changement global autour de la voile me parle profondément. C’est un privilège de développer cette ligue aux côtés de SailGP. »

Diversity, sustainability and equality

Together with Ben Ainslie, she co-founded the Athena Pathway programme, a British initiative aimed at breaking down barriers in sailing by championing diversity, sustainability, and equality. A philosophy also embraced by Brazilian Martine Grael, a frontrunner in the championship’s 2025 season.

Cette année, SailGP célèbre l’arrivée de la première femme à la barre d’un des douze catamarans engagés. Nommée « Rolex World Sailor of The Year » à 22 ans, en 2014, Martine Grael n’est pas là pour faire de la figuration. Dotée d’un esprit de compétition hors du commun, elle a été choisie parce que, selon le sélectionneur brésilien, elle était bel et bien « le meilleur marin du pays » au moment de la sélection. Après des débuts difficiles, comme il se doit dans cette série de très haut niveau, elle a brillamment démontré ses capacités en juin dernier, en se classant 4e au Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix. Selon cette battante, « ce championnat prouve que femmes et hommes peuvent concourir à égalité. C’est un énorme pas en avant, et j’espère que cela inspirera d’autres sports à faire de même ». À 34 ans, la fille de la légende de la voile brésilienne Torben Grael s’est forgé un prénom. Elle est Témoignage Rolex depuis l’an dernier. Opiniâtre,

Martine Grael is there to race and not just compete. Driven by an incredibly competitive spirit, she was selected because, as the Brazilian coach put it, she was “the best sailor in the country” at the time. After a challenging start, as expected in such an elite class, she brilliantly demonstrated her talent last June with a 4th-place finish at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix. According to this fierce sailor “This championship shows that women and men can compete on equal terms.” It’s a huge step forward, and I hope encourages other sports to follow suit.” At 34, the daughter of Brazilian sailing legend Torben Grael made a name for herself. She became a Rolex Testimonee last year. Unrelenting and determined, she is a two-time Olympic gold medallist. She also distinguished herself in ocean racing as a circumnavigator in the 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race.

In pursuit of excellence

The relentless pursuit of excellence and perfection is a hallmark of Australian Tom Slingsby. “When I was 15 years old, I wrote down my career goals” I loved ticking them all off as I went along,” recalls the man who ultimately became everything he aspired to be: ten-time world champion, 2012 Olympic gold medallist, 2013 America’s Cup winner, and leader of the first three SailGP seasons. A Rolex Testimonee since 2023, Tom Slingsby recognises strong “parallels” between the Rolex’s philosophy and his own. The athlete has “always been driven by the desire to do better than the day before”. By sailing at an elite level, Slingsby is able to satisfy his thirst for improvement. He was honoured by his peers with three Rolex World Sailor of the Year awards in 2010, 2021, and 2023.

La quête de l’excellence

La quête permanente de l’excellence, la recherche de la perfection, est aussi ce qui caractérise l’Australien Tom Slingsby. « À l’âge de 15 ans, j’avais inscrit mes objectifs sur mon mur. J’adorais les cocher au fur et à mesure que je les atteignais », se souvient celui qui a fini par devenir tout ce qu’il voulait être : dix fois champion du monde, médaillé d’or olympique en 2012, vainqueur de l’America’s Cup en 2013 et leader des trois premières saisons de SailGP. Témoignage Rolex depuis 2023, Tom Slingsby y voit « un alignement des valeurs » entre la philosophie de l’entreprise genevoise et la sienne. L’athlète a « toujours été animé par le désir d’être meilleur que la veille ». La navigation à un niveau élite permet à Slingsby d’étancher sa soif de progression. Il a été reconnu par ses pairs en 2010, 2021 et 2023, avec trois titres de Rolex World Sailor of the Year.

Un accomplissement personnel

Mais qu’est-ce qui motive une telle soif de performance ? À l’évocation de cette question, l’homme se remémore des minutes qui suivirent la victoire de sa médaille d’or olympique, à Londres. Assis sous la douche, seul, dans un moment tranquille de reconnaissance, il avait alors absorbé et mesuré le dénouement de douze années de sacrifices. « Le succès est personnel. Pour moi, c’est reconnaître l’accomplissement, pas seulement avec la reconnaissance publique, mais d’abord en soi. »

A personal achievement

But what motivates such a thirst for performance?

On hearing this question, he recalls the moments that followed his Olympic gold medal win in London. Sitting alone in the shower, during a quiet moment of gratitude, he absorbed and reflected on the results of twelve years of sacrifice. “Success is a personal thing. To me, real achievement starts not just with public acclaim, but with how you acknowledge it personally.”

Randonnée et vélo : le duo gagnant

On chausse ses baskets pour parcourir les quelque 348 km de sentiers de randonnée du canton de Genève dont un tronçon du célèbre chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Celui-ci traverse la région avec la Via Jacobi, étapes 19 et 20, jusqu’à la frontière française. Les randonneurs, débutants ou aguerris, ne manquent pas de choix, mais le « Sentier du Rhône » est l’une des balades les plus célèbres du canton. La promenade se déroule comme un long ruban, entre des villages viticoles, dont Avully et Cartigny, et de magnifiques réserves naturelles. Le parcours suit paisiblement de petits ruisseaux et rivières jusqu’à la Jonction, lieu hautement instagrammable ! À vélo, la balade à partir du quartier des Pâquis jusqu’à Nyon, dans le canton de Vaud voisin, ne manque pas de charme au cœur d’un paysage changeant.

Secrets horlogers

Cadrans, aiguilles, mouvements, complications… Genève est le berceau de l’horlogerie. Les passionnés de belles mécaniques ont rendez-vous à la Grand-Rue, dans la Vieille-Ville, chez « Initium », pour réserver un atelier d’horlogerie. Guidé par un maître horloger expérimenté, chacun réalise sa propre montre, s’initiant de manière ludique aux mystères de la haute horlogerie.

Hiking and cycling, the winning duo

Put on your walking shoes and set off along the 348 km or so of hiking trails in the canton of Geneva, including a section of the famous Way of St James. This runs through the region on the Via Jacobi, stages 19 and 20, as far as the French border. Hikers of all levels have plenty of options, but the “Sentier du Rhône” is one of the canton’s most popular trails. The trail winds like a long ribbon through wine-growing villages such as Avully and Cartigny, as well as stunning nature reserves. The route meanders along small streams and rivers, leading to the highly Instagrammable Jonction! The bike ride from the Pâquis district to Nyon in the neighbouring Vaud canton offers a delightful path through ever-changing scenery.

Watchmaking secrets

Dials, hands, movements, complications... Geneva is the birthplace of watchmaking. Anyone who loves mechanical engineering should go to Initium on Grand-Rue in the Old Town to book a watchmaking workshop. Led by an expert master watchmaker, participants make their own watch, offering a fun and hands-on introduction to the art of fine watchmaking.
