Get ready for a racing showdown
Les 20 et 21 septembre, les F50 du SailGP régatent en eau douce. Le Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix Geneva est le fruit d’une succession d’idées visionnaires. Faire voler des bateaux, d’abord. Puis lancer une flotte de catamarans survitaminés en plein cœur d’une cité lacustre. En rejoignant le circuit du SailGP, Genève entre dans une nouvelle dimension. Elle s’inscrit parmi les hauts lieux de la voile internationale. Elle met aussi à l’honneur ses enfants du lac : Sébastien, Maud, Arnaud, Bryan et Arno… Ces ambassadeurs planétaires ont usé leurs premiers fonds de cirés dans les écoles de voile du Léman. Depuis des mois, la date est gravée dans leurs cœurs. Mais face à eux, l’élite mondiale n’a pas de sentiments. Il va y avoir du sport.
Traduit en anglais, ce magazine est un outil de compréhension. Il présente les équipes, donne la parole aux organisateurs et accompagne les spectateurs dans la découverte de ce circuit révolutionnaire. Il y a six ans, SailGP n’existait pas. Aujourd’hui, il redéfinit la voile mondiale.

On 20 and 21 September, the SailGP F50s will race on the fresh water of Lake Geneva. The Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix Geneva is the result of a succession of visionary ideas. It started with flying boats and led to a fleet of high-octane catamarans racing right in the epicentre of the lakeside city.
By joining the SailGP circuit, Geneva is elevating its profile to new heights. It is one of the top international sailing venues. It also proudly celebrates the sons and daughters of the lake: Sébastien, Maud, Arnaud, Bryan and Arno. These global ambassadors began their journey in Lake Geneva’s sailing schools, where they first wore through their all-weather gear. They have carried this date close to their hearts for months. But the global elite competing with them will show no mercy. We can anticipate fierce racing. Translated into English, this magazine aims to offer insights into the race. It showcases the teams, offers a platform for the organisers, and guides spectators as they learn about this innovative circuit. Six years ago, SailGP did not exist. Today, it is redefining sailing worldwide.

Le CEO de SailGP évoque son attachement à Genève et sa fierté d’y faire découvrir le circuit international des F50. Il revient aussi sur les enjeux de cette étape suisse du championnat. SailGP CEO Russell Coutts speaks about the excitement of a first event in Geneva, a place where he is always happy to return to. Interview.

Quelle importance revêt pour vous le Rolex
Switzerland SailGP ?
Russell Coutts : Nous sommes très fiers d’amener la ligue en Suisse. L’équipe suisse va pouvoir régater devant son public pour la première fois. Le plan d’eau de Genève est une plateforme parfaite pour faire découvrir notre championnat et tous ses aspects spectaculaires. Les tribunes seront idéalement placées pour que le public vive les courses au plus près. Et les régates seront, comme toujours, très disputées.
How important is it to hold the Rolex SailGP Championship event in Geneva?
Russell Coutts: We are really proud about bringing the league to Switzerland. It’s a home market for the SUI team and to bring SailGP, the most exciting racing, on water right into Geneva is a good opportunity to showcase our league in a great way. We selected a place on the lake where we can build the grandstand and bring the fans really close to the action. I think the venue will be a perfect fit. The racing is hugely competitive. And that’s what the fans want to see. They want to see close races. And in Switzerland, they will probably want the Swiss to do well too.

“Switzerland holds some special memories”
C’est ce que les fans attendent : de l’intensité, du suspense. En Suisse, ils auront aussi à cœur de soutenir leur équipe nationale.
C’est impressionnant à la télévision. Mais en vrai ?
En vrai, c’est tout simplement autre chose. On ne réalise pas à quel point c’est extrême tant que l’on n’y assiste pas. Voir toute la flotte virer à la première bouée, à quelques mètres du rivage, c’est saisissant.
Ce qui surprend souvent les spectateurs, c’est la densité de l’action. Tous les bateaux sont identiques : ce sont les marins qui font la différence. La ligue réunit les meilleurs navigateurs du monde.
It’s spectacular on TV but even more when you see it in person… It transforms the viewing experience. It’s hard to fully comprehend how extreme it is when you watch it on TV. Watching the fleet rounding mark one, right in front of the fans, is spectacular. Most of them are blown away and say that they never expected anything like it. It’s fast, intense,action-packed racing. Every team races on identical boats. So it’s the skill of the sailors and not the technology that determines the outcome. That’s the essence of SailGP. And, of course, we have the best sailors in the world racing on some of the most challenging boats ever designed. That is the way the league is designed and its great racing. And we’re looking forward to bringing this experience to the Swiss fans.
You have raced on this lake. What conditions do you expect?
I did a little bit of racing on the lake when I was living in Switzerland. In September, the wind is a little bit more consistent, and we will proba-

Les F50 sont exigeants, très techniques. C’est ce qui rend les courses aussi spectaculaires. J’ai hâte que le public suisse voit ça de ses propres yeux.
Vous avez déjà navigué sur ce lac. Quelles conditions attendez-vous ?
J’ai fait un peu de régate sur ce lac quand je vivais en Suisse. En septembre, le vent est un peu plus régulier. On programmera sans doute les courses assez tard dans la journée, car c’est à ce moment-là qu’une brise d’été a tendance à se lever.
Nous ajusterons le parcours en fonction de notre expérience, et l’équipe suisse aura un vrai avantage avec sa connaissance du plan d’eau. Nos F50 sont performants même dans le petit temps.
D’ailleurs, un nouveau foil et un nouveau safran, pensés pour les conditions légères, seront probablement utilisés lors du Rolex Switzerland SailGP Grand Prix.
Qu’attendez-vous du public suisse ?
Nous ne nous adressons pas seulement aux initiés. Il n’est pas nécessaire d’être un expert pour apprécier SailGP. La plus grande partie de notre public ne s’y connaît pas en voile. Beaucoup viennent pour l’ambiance. Nous aimons créer une atmosphère conviviale en alliant l’expérience sportive à la culture locale ; permettre au public d’assister à de belles courses tout en passant un bon moment au bord de l’eau. Les fans suisses vont vraiment apprécier cela.
Et pour vous, personnellement, que représente ce retour à Genève ?
C’est toujours spécial pour moi. J’ai vécu ici avec ma famille, j’y ai tissé des liens forts. Mes trois plus jeunes enfants sont nés à Genève. Revenir, revoir des visages connus, me promener dans des lieux qui ont compté… tout cela a beaucoup de valeur à mes yeux. Je suis heureux de pouvoir associer cette dimension personnelle à un événement aussi marquant que le SailGP.
bly schedule the racing quite late in the day when you to tend to get a summer breeze. We will set up the rules based on experiences and, of course, the Swiss team will be able to help as they have the experience of sailing in the championship. The F50’s are designed to perform in light wind. We currently have new light wind foils and light wind rudders in their final stages of development, so these might also be ready for use ahead of the Swiss event.
What do you expect from the Swiss crowd?
SailGP isn’t just for sailing fans. You don’t need to be a sailor to enjoy the action. A large part of our audience is from outside the sailing world. Some fans attend, because they just like the atmosphere. We like people to enjoy the atmosphere, experience great racing, and have fun on the waterside. It’s about combining racing with local culture and good honest fun. The Swiss fans will really love that.
For you personally, is it something special to come back to Switzerland with your SailGP success?
It’s always special for me to come back to Switzerland. I love visiting Geneva. It has some very special memories for me, of course. I feel comfortable in Switzerland. I always enjoy coming back and seeing the people that I became friends with when I was living here with my family. My three youngest children were born in Geneva. It definitely holds some special memories.
