EDITOR’s NOTE Dear Readers What an exciting time of year! A time to celebrate all of the positive things in our life and the magic of the season. I love the sights, sounds & smells! We have two girls (9 & 12 years old) who are very excited for Christmas and all of our family traditions. My husband and I enjoy the holidays more each year, as their appreciation for all of our family traditions grows. “When can we set up the Christmas Villages?” “When can we decorate the tree?” “When can we wrap presents?” So much to do & so many memories to make! Of course there is a lot to get done, and not enough time, as usual. But, the excitement of it all is what is contagious & easily pushes the chores to the bottom of the “to do” list! As they get older, they get more pleasure out of giving and sharing, not just receiving. We have always made an effort to buy items for our local charities and donated needed items. The girls pick out gifts for each other and family members with such pride and excitement. I am grateful that they are so giving, and have gratitude for what they receive. The giving is now just as exciting to them and they beg to give those gifts as soon as we leave the store! This holiday season I hope that you will also find joy in the gifts you receive, but also give. Even when we feel that we don’t have much to give, a simple hand written card to a neighbor is as cherished as a tangible gift. Maybe offer to wrap someones gifts who has been ill, or take them shopping. These are gifts that don’t cost anything. We can make a difference in our community with our time, as much as we can with our money & donations. Remember those who are struggling and are alone. Even with the joy that this season brings, it can be a very painful time for those who have lost or can’t be near loved ones. The New Year gives all of us a renewed hope for better. For all of us, we can strive to improve something in our lives. Who we are, what we choose and how we treat others. We can always make just a little more time for those things in life that we value. May 2013 and the Holiday Season bring to light what is most important to you! I wish you a safe, peaceful and joyous Holiday Season and New Year! Best wishes for all that is good and makes you happy. Thank you for reading Our Towne! Jennifer Felts

OUR TOWNE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON... GOLD KREST FAMILY FARM Eight months out of the year, you can depend on Gold Krest Family Farm to supply you with the freshest goods from the land that they call home. Since 1935 the Webb family has provided customers with local homegrown produce. They strive to offer only the freshest and highest-quality produce and provide all of your Fall & Winter decorating needs. A fourth generation farm in East Greenbush, NY, Gold Krest farms 300 acres and is known in the Spring & Summer for its sweet corn, which is sold at local Supermarkets and as far away as Florida. During the Spring & Summer months, Chris Webb & his staff also offer tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, strawberries, raspberries, beans, and the most beautiful annuals. You can purchase mulch & trees, shrubs and hanging baskets. They bring the fresh products from their family land to your home with fair prices and appreciation for your business. Fall brings a selection of thousands of pumpkins for decorating & pie making. The selection of huge colorful Mums, Corn Stalks, Straw & Hay is enough to decorate your home and business for that warm feeling that Autumn brings in the Northeast. And today, you can find a beautiful selection of freshly cut Christmas Trees from their farmland. The staff at Gold Krest Farms have been preparing for the Winter Season- plenty of firewood ready to be delivered to keep your home toasty warm. Don’t forget the fresh kissing balls & wreathsall made by hand by his staff. And if you need Firewood or a Christmas Tree delivered locally, just ask. It is free at Gold Krest Family Farm! Each time that I speak with Chris Webb, I realize he and his family farm are what Our Towne is really all about. Dedication to the roots of our community & small business. Perseverance through ups and downs, looking ahead to prosperity and promise of tomorrow. A humble man, a hard worker and a guy with a big and strong heart. That is the core of Gold Krest Farms and the four generations of farmers that have contributed to Our Towne. ~Jennifer Felts

Happy Holidays to Everyone, with a special note of thanks to our ever expanding list of awesome customers, with many new friendships created as well. I started out in 2010 with one truck (a Ford Ranger, one step above a shopping cart size-wise) and my driveway doubling as scrap metal storage (see Wife: not happy about that). Today Scrapster has 3 employees, 3 trucks and over 6000 SF of warehouse space for our recycling operations. Our growth has doubled every six months and we expect to surpass 700,000 pounds (that’s 350 tons!) of scrap metal recycled in the 30 months since we started (now we are processing over 60,000 pounds a month!). And that total doesn’t include the amount of junk removal, one of the many services we provide to both our business and residential customers. A friend of mine recently asked me if I was â€œâ€Śstill going down into basements?â€?. The answer is and always will be: “YES!!!â€?. “Don’t Worry, We Can Take Itâ€?, isn’t just our slogan, it is the back bone of what we do. Large or small, easy or difficult‌we go where others won’t, to take out the things they can’t, anytime we have to, to get the job done right‌ safely, correctly and on time. Scrapster is local family owned business which provides a NO COST scrap metal, appliance and electronics removal and recycling service. We are fully insured, convenient, and reliable; we aim to provide top Quality work every time you need us. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. Our other services include very reasonably priced Junk Removal, Television Removal, Clean Outs and Moving Items. To schedule an appointment, please call us at (518) 505-5055. Please Like us on Facebook and visit us at www.scrapster.com for news, specials and information about recycling.

Purrfect Kitty of the Month PLEASE ADOPT ME! Meet Cocca! My name is Cocoa. I’m a lovely 6-yearold, female brown tabby cat with white tuxedo markings. The volunteers here say I have pretty eyes, too. I’m an affectionate kitty that just adores adoration! :) I could be a solo pet or share a little of that adoration with another kitty or two. I love my food and I have a little extra weight to show for it. But, hey, it’s the holidays! I’ll have to put that diet on my New Year’s resolution list! Maybe you’d be willing to help me with that? I could really use a good friend to put me on the right track and give me a loving home. It would be my Christmas wish come true! Could my “forever home be with you? Please consider bringing me home! Like all Purrfect Companion kitties, Cocoa is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and spayed. For more information on Cocoa, please contact Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com.

Resolutions By Daryl Bart It’s resolution season for me. Well, everyday is resolution season for me but I’m particularly focused these days. I find that I’m regularly vowing to start something every Monday. Revisit unfinished projects; sort papers and clean out closets; plan vacations and buy holiday gifts early. I swore that by now that those pounds would be lost, my book would be underway, and my list would be well, more complete. But the list gets longer by the day. Some days I’m just so frustrated with how few items actually get crossed off. Time is scarce; kids schedules usurp my workouts and yikes, the prices of airline tickets. So, I resolved that winning something, anything, would make me feel better and added that to my long To Do list. I started entering contests; to win cars, cash & Superbowl tickets. I filled out entries for trips to Thailand, to New Zealand, to Missouri – hey a free trip is a free trip. Someone has to win, right? The other night, after dinner, I submitted my name to a TV show looking for participants. I wrote a brief paragraph, hit enter and left for my son’s basketball tryouts. An hour later, I got home and my husband gave me that look. You know, THE “What did you do?“ LOOK. (I get that a lot) He said, “The Dr. Oz Show just called you.” “WHAT?!? “ I didn’t care that it was almost 9pm, I was on the phone. 4 days & a gazillion emails later, I was heading to NYC to be a guest on the DR. OZ show – sitting knee to knee with the information-guru himself! I took this adventure as a gift. It wasn’t on my original list, but was fun & thrilling and I embraced the experience. Hey, I even got to use up 3 of my supposed 15 minutes of fame on National TV. My brush with greatness (he really is as nice as he seems) hasn’t deterred me. I still refine my ever-changing list so I’m ready for Monday and the “new me”. Hey, I’m a work in progress. I’ve got my eye on the prize and I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting notified about a free vacation or a book deal, any day now. Regardless, 2012 has been a success…my family is healthy and I’m happy and I kinda like having unfinished business. I mean what would I do in 2013 if I crossed it all off? So, I’ll see you Monday and hey, according to my calculations, I still have 12 minutes left.

PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY The attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 is ever etched on the minds of those who are old enough to remember. For the rest, it is the solemn duty of members of the American Legion to bring this horrific day to the attention of those younger and who may not appreciate the meaning of this solemn occasion. At 12Noon, Friday, December 7th, 2012 Melvin Roads Post will hold a moment of prayer and remembrance for veterans and the wider community. This day commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Imperial Japanese Navy. This surprise attack led President Roosevelt to say that “this is a day that will go down in infamy.” 2,345 US military died along with 57 civilians; 1,247 more military were wounded, 4 battleships sunk, 4 more damaged, 2 destroyers sunk, one other damaged. We hold up in prayer those who made the supreme sacrifice 71 years ago on this date. Melvin Roads Post 1231 American Legion is located at 200 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush and counts an active membership of 400 veterans. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join the members of the Post for the December 7th service. A light lunch will be offered after the service.

BUY OR SELL FIRST? BY CATHY GRAZIANO When it comes to home buying, the ideal situation would be to find a new home, just as you receive an offer on your existing home. You would then be able to close concurrently and move into your new home a few days prior to closing on your previous home. This does happen more often than not, but anyone looking to buy a new home needs to consider all the possible scenarios. Should you buy or sell first? There are many schools of thought on this subject. Ultimately, it depends on you and your situation. For instance, can you afford to pay two mortgages in the event your previous home does not sell by the time you move? Are you willing to move twice to find the home of your dreams if you sell first and can't find the dream home fast enough? This is where the advice of a real estate sales professional is invaluable. Real estate sales professionals know the current market conditions. They are experienced in working with home buyers and sellers to determine an ideal time to buy and sell. It is generally less stressful to sell your home first, because you won't have to worry about owning two homes at one time. The market will dictate how long it will take your home to sell, as will your location and the time of year. As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to put your home of the market as far in advance as possible when purchasing a new one. But, if interest rates are good and there is a short supply of available homes, your home will most likely sell faster. In that case, you may want to purchase a new home first.

Contact Cathy Graziano at RE/MAX Capital with all of your Real Estate questions. Office: 518-533-3605 Cell: 518-496-2297 w w w.remax.capital.ny.com cathygraz@gmail.com

RE/MAX The sign you want. The agent you need. In today’s challenging reals estate market, nothing brings a wider smile than a sign that says “SOLD!” And thanks to the experience and productivity of REMAX Capital Sales Associates, that sign is appearing more frequently than you might think. REMAX agents average MORE sales than other agents. They know their markets, and they care to get to know you, too! So if you are looking to buy, sell, or both, call the name that means SUCCESS!

What if your present home sells before you find a new one, putting pressure on you to find the right house for you more quickly? You may then decide to make an interim move or request to rent back your home for a specified amount of time as you continue to look for your new home. Those may be worthwhile options if you have your heart set on a specific location or type of home or if you are purchasing a home that is under construction. If you buy a home before selling your present home, you may end up with two mortgages. So should you buy or sell first? It’s the question of the ages, but your own circumstancES And a knowledgeable real estate professional should be able to help you make the right decision. Cathy is a resident of East Greenbush and is an associate broker with RE/MAX Capital. DEAR ANGIE, My husband always buys me presents that HE wants me to have or wear, not what I would ever pick out. Then he is hurt when I want to return it? Any advice? From, All I want for Christmas is what I would BUY Myself, Dear All I want for Christmas is what I would Buy Myself, Oh boy! This is a tough and touchy subject but I have to say honesty really is the best policy. My husband has picked out some bad sweaters in the past. I had to be honest and tell him that it really isn’t something that I like. He didn’t crumble or stop talking to me but the real question should be what are we women afraid of? Women are always afraid to hurt someones feelings but do you ever notice that men do not have this problem. They are never afraid to say they don’t like - what you made for dinner, the way you clean the house and if you buy something that they do not need. In my own situation, I have just decided that it isn’t worth going back to the store and standing in the return line. Now, while I’m out doing Christmas shopping. I pick up items that I WANT and hand the bag to my husband. Hoping and praying that it will end up under the tree! I know its not much for the Christmas spirit but I really can’t wait for Christmas morning when everyone gets what they want - Including ME!!! Happy Holidays~ Angie

The Inheritance My mom is dead but her cat isn’t. I love Sneaker (wouldn’t have picked that name…) and she has fit right into our hearts and home—but I didn’t choose her. Almost every time I see this cat I think of my mom. That makes seeing this cat sitting on the couch/bed/dresser/window—kind of sentimental. But not just in a good way. On the phone mom would tell me all about the mischievous acts Sneaker was perpetrating—all of the half-dead bugs she’d bring in from outside—and most of all just how much she loved her and how much joy this little creature brings her. Used to bring her. Now I’ve had this cat just over half of her life—she’s 3, and I wonder if she dreams of one day returning to the great outdoors of Oklahoma? To the lap of my mother? Would she remember the way my mom called to her? Her voice? You know, I kind of think she would respond—but possibly that’s just a conditioned response. I really don’t know what she’s thinking. I don’t know what my wife or kids are thinking half the time so it’s no surprise the cat remains a mystery. Sneaker has been really busy with her new life for 2 years, and she’s safe and she’s loved and I’m fairly certain she knows that. Quite a few of the pets I see are inherited. In my case it was a no-brainer. I brought the cat home. Often the transition is thornier than my experience. What about the other pets in your home? What about your life and schedule and plans? Why are you now voted lifelong caretaker of your parents bad decision? What are you going to do with the “sugar” cat that needs the needle every day? You hate needles! When is enough, enough? I have to give a thyroid pill twice daily? To the dog? This big, fat, lazy dog gets expensive arthritis meds? Now I’m buying them? Am I doing my parent or sibling a disservice by not carrying on with an expensive or annoying management plan for their elderly pet? Do I have to keep feeding this expensive food? Now do you get the guilt of euthanasia? Another pickle is the wife who will never forgive you for euthanizing her dead mothers cat because you couldn’t tolerate an 18 year old kidney failure cat urinating all over your home, stinking it up, and causing all kinds of property damage. All this just so it can get up twice a day to eat and puke all over the rugs?! Sorry—I hear this stuff—this life stuff--almost daily. It gets even pricklier when a person doesn’t have very clear lines of inheritance for their pet already established. Or if the association with the former owner is particularly sensitive—the daughter’s dog that helped her tirelessly until the day the little girl was overcome by cancer. Or the faithful companion of the teen who commits suicide. The parents may not be able to bear the agony constantly seeing the pet. Sometimes parents infuse deep meaning in the life of the pet--an extension of their child--and if something were to ever happen to the pet, they tell me they won’t survive. I can only imagine how smashed together life must be when you lose a child—I can’t imagine how a pet might factor in. Veterinary medicine isn’t just popping a dogs and cats with vaccines. I’ll bet my Primary hears some pretty amazing/wonderful/terrible stories as well. Sometimes the handoff is vertical--but upward—kids go to college and leave Rover at home. Kids get married, have allergic children, and grandma gets the cat. Probably 1 or 2% of my clients have pets that their children have “given” them. A surprising number of 1 year old dogs are cared for by mothers of 19 year old girls who’s former boyfriend bought them the puppy for Christmas before they graduated and went off to college. Isn’t that wild? Now grandma’s got this rambunctious dog. What are you supposed to do with the urns and ashes of all 27 of Aunt Thelma’s former cats? Get a bigger casket for Aunt Thelma. I had dinner tonight with a 94 year old woman who happens to be a friend and client. Her very old cat is not thriving—not doing well at all, sadly. During dinner she leans over to me and whispers, “I want a kitten…” I call my dad one night a few months ago and he answers the phone kind of out of breath. He’s up there in years so I say, “Pop, what’s wrong?” He catches up a little and says, “Oh no, I’m alright, I’ve just been chasing the dog.” “Which dog, Pop?” “Oh, I finally went out and got a little Jack Russell puppy—little boy named Jack!” “Wow—a puppy! Now you have 3 Jack Russell’s—Pop, you’re 77 years old…”Sneaker is going to freak out when those dogs get here.

5 Ideas for putting a little Holiday Cheer in every Room of your home The Holidays are fast approaching and nothing is more charming than a bit of the Season to welcome you in each room of the house. Shop your collection of Holiday decorations before buying anything new, you probably have everything you need already! 1. Sway a simple evergreen garland over a window on the stair landing or over a mirror in the foyer or bedroom. Depending on your decorating style, go big – cluster ornaments in each corner and add a wired ribbon bow with it’s tails artfully curled orkeep it simple and organic with a raffia tie. 2. Decorate your dining room chandelier with glitter dusted ornaments. Use a variety of shapes and sizes but keep it one color for the most dramatic impact. 3. Swap out your everyday sofa pillows and replace with Holiday pillows or fresh pillows in Holiday colors – think red, silver, gold. Target always has a great selection of affordable Holiday pillows. 4. Create a tabletop vignette on a chest or console in your foyer. Try this simple idea: group together three different sized crystal vases filled with berry sprigs and sprinkle about a few glitter -dusted pine cones – add one or two votives and voila! instant cheer. 5. Small 6-8” evergreen or grapevine wreaths hung with a festive ribbon can add a bit of Holiday anywhere….on the front of your dining room buffet, hung from the shelves of a bookcase or try hanging them from your window latches. Keep the ribbon length and colors consistent for the best look.
