Take A Kid Fishing!

I taught myself how to use a baitcast reel when I was around 11 years old. I had been fishing since I could walk, but I wanted to fish tournaments with my dad and didn’t want to be limited in my choice of baits or techniques. We went fishing anytime we could. The opportunities for kids, back in the early 1980’s, were limited. I fished with him in a small club and in wildcat tournaments when we could get to them. Those are some great memories from almost 40 years ago. I wish there had been junior and high school fishing back then. I fished against adults in almost every situation.

The advent of the youth fishing teams has opened a lot of opportunities for the young people of today to learn and compete against

people their own age. It is a great thing to see the growth in those areas of our sport. Youth can also benefit from scholarship opportunities to a number of colleges.

I sponsor the high school fishing team at one of the area schools I attended. There are many local companies doing this as well. The young anglers have access to all of the quality fishing gear through many manufacturers who also support the youth initiative. B.A.S.S. and MLF/ FLW have numerous opportunities for them to compete and learn during the course of a season. A lot of the kids today can read a graph better than many adults who aren’t as tech savvy. You can also see the effect of the college programs on the professional level. Jordan Lee came through Auburn on his way to getting a berth from the college championship into the Bassmaster Classic, which he won, back to back, a few years later.

I think it is great for so many young people to be in the great outdoors instead of being glued to the screen of a computer in the house. That is how our beloved sport will grow and continue in the future. The kids on the lake are getting to spend quality time with family and friends. That is actually more important to a lot of parents than the kids realize.

I guess my point is to take a kid fishing. Not only will you enjoy it, most of them will cherish the time spent on the water with friends and family. Very few will make a career out of it, but they will make a lot of memories like I did with my dad.

Remember, it isn’t always how many fish you catch. It is the experience of getting to enjoy God’s creation and savor the great outdoors our area offers.

If you’re a beginner with crank baits, simply parallel the depth line with your cast and retrieve. It doesn’t matter if you fish from the bank, kayak, or a boat. Take a moderate retrieve. Mike DelVisco has been a full-time time professional angler for over 35 years, and competes on the MLF Toyota and Phoenix series – He has also fished Bassmaster, FLW and PAA Tours, and is a 2007 and 2008 Grand Slam and 2009 Bassmaster Series National Championship qualifier, multiple time Regional Championship qualifier and recently finished 4th at the inaugural Ultimate Match Fishing Invitational and won the FLW BFL Super Tournament on Old Hickory Lake. In 2018 Mike was also featured on the cover of Bass Angler Magazine and was one of the stars in country music artists – Smith and Wesley’s music video Hook Line & Sinker. In addition to competing, Mike conducts seminars around the country at many popular sport shows and is a former Bassmaster University instructor. Mike writes for a number of online and print publications and hosts a number of video tip segments on the web and broadcast outlets.

JOHN MURRAY BASS FISHING

John has been a full time professional angler since 1985 fishing local, regional and national tournament circuits like Won Bass, FLW and the Bassmaster Elite Series. At one time, John was being called the ironman since he was fishing both FLW and the Bassmaster Elite Series the same year. John is the only professional angler to win a fully rigged bass boat on every major western waterway from New Mexico to Washington totaling 31. He has qualified for the Bassmaster Classic 7 times and is a 2 time US Open Champion and has earned $3 Million during his career.

I grew up in the Eagle Furnace community of Rockwood, Tennessee. I have always been fascinated with fish and have been chasing them as long as I can remember. I can remember dad making crank baits and putting them in egg cartons to store them and as a young child, every time I would go to the grocery store, I would stand at the eggs and say “fish.” Later, while I was working for the TVA I fished BFL and a circuit call the Hungry Fisherman Series. I quit my job because of a near fatal accident while working for TVA. God had a different plan! I fished my first FLW event in 1997 on Kentucky Lake. I finished 11th just missing the cut by 3 oz. I made enough on that event to pay my deposits and 1 balance for the ’98 season. I couldn’t have done any of this without my mother and father and my strong Christian foundation.

GLENN CHAPPELEAR BASS FISHING

Chappelear, an ordained minister, grew up fishing for catfish near Greenville, S.C. Now residing in Acworth, Ga., Chappelear has fished the FLW Tour every year since 2001. Chappelear also leads the FOCAS Bible Study at every Walmart FLW Tour event, which is attended by anglers, sponsors, families and FLW staff members. Glenn has been married to his wife for almost 20 years, and they currently have three children. When not on Tour, Chappelear enjoys hunting, reading the bible and volunteering at his local Children’s Home and Homeless Shelter. During the late summer and fall Chappelear organizes hunting outreach events for Sportsmen’s Outreach.

CAPT STEVE STUBBE FLY ROD FOR BASS

I have been working and playing on the water since 1977 from the Texas Gulf Coast to the Canadian tundra – hunting, fishing, working, a member of several bass clubs, fishing tournaments, guided for the Sunshine kids fishing tournament (fresh & salt water) for several years and attended seaman schools.

My wife (Tamie) and I were given the opportunity to start our own radio show. I was the host of an AM radio talk show in Houston on Saturday mornings for 52 weeks. This call-in talk show was named TechReps and was based on technical pros talking about mechanical repairs and the outdoor sporting goods industry. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot.

MARK OSBURN FLY ROD FOR BASS

Gypsy Jack, or G-Jack to his friends, began experimenting with different fly rod offerings for bass as a youngster fishing legendary Toledo Bend Reservoir with his dad in the early 1970s. Using conventional bait casting and spinning tackle, G-Jack learned how to catch fish on everything from crank baits and jigs to spinners and top water plugs.

But his hankering for fly rods led him to try casting poppers and large flies on his department store 8’ fly rod.

BARRY WHITE CRAPPIE FISHING

Captain Barry White, a US Coast Guard Certified and fully insured fishing guide on Watts Bar Lake and Lake Chickamauga, has been catching Crappie for over 30 years and he’s back again at the 2023 East TN Fishing Show to share more fish catching tips during his seminars at the show.

Cherry came charging back with a wire-to-wire win in 2020, the historic 50th anniversary of the Bassmaster Classic.

On Lake Ray Roberts, Hank Cherry became one of only a handful of tournament anglers to win 2 Bassmaster Classic world championships. Cherry also joined Rick Clunn, Kevin VanDam and Jordan Lee as the only anglers to win the tournament back-to-back.
