Introduction Greater Manchester Higher is a collaborative network of higher education providers in Greater Manchester who are working together to provide high quality, impartial information, advice and guidance about higher education, with the aim of increasing awareness and raising ambitions amongst talented learners in Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester Higher will be delivering the HEFCE funded National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) in Greater Manchester. The aim of the programme is to work towards the Government’s goal of doubling participation in Higher Education amongst disadvantaged groups by 2020. The programme is highly targeted, working with learners in Y9–13 from electoral wards where participation is lower than expected based on key stage 4 attainment. This day provides an insight to various roles and employment opportunities in the health and public sector industry. Pupils will take part in workshops with current HE tutors, who have all worked previously in industry, along with alumni who are working in industry. These workshops will allow pupils to explore lesser known job roles within these areas and learn about different pathways to them. The workshops are practical and involve specialist equipment. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the day, where students will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Lunch on the day will also be provided.

This day provides an insight to various roles and employment opportunities in the creative and digital media industry. Pupils will take part in workshops with current HE tutors, who all have industry experience. These practical workshops will allow pupils to take part in activities related to film and tv production, graphic design for marketing products, photography and broadcasting. These workshops will give an insight into the types of briefs and projects that current HE students work on in this area. There will be a Q&A session at the end of the day, where students will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Lunch on the day will also be provided.

Let’s celebrate!

This interactive IAG event, offers students the opportunity to learn about a wide range of vocational HE courses an curriculum areas. All areas will be holding activities that students can get involved in i.e. mock court case, fitness tests, make up classes, plus exhibitions of HE work in the form of fashion shows and stalls. These activities will give students the opportunity to find out about the type of work that HE students study, as part of these courses. The students will be able to ask questions and gain advice and information from both HE tutors and HE students. There will also be talks happening in the lecture theatre on HE issues such as applying for HE, Student Finance etc.

Students are preparing to make the transition from FE to HE. Did you know that 8 out of 10 students are worried about moving into HE, which can result in students dropping out. At the HE Preparation Event, students from around Greater Manchester will be inspired and motivated to progress into their chosen HE option. During the event we will showcase key FE achievements from across Manchester colleges and 6th Forms as part of a small graduation celebration. On the day there will be a motivational and inspirational guest speaker who will take about how HE will have a positive impact on their life. Students can attend “skills” workshops to gain the skills required to study in HE – these will include study tips, stress release techniques and workshops on to how to deal with new social situations, how to improve communication skills and how to improve resilience.

Y10 Campus Visit TMC Openshaw Campus 07/06/2017 Year Group: 10 Number of places available: 60 This visit provides learners with the opportunity to visit a HE campus and gain an insight into student life. Pupils will participate in a classroom based workshop, campus tour and a practical activity. Throughout the visit, they will explore the range of options available within higher education and gain an insight into the social aspects of student life and the facilities and support available, including an introduction to the social side of HE and age-appropriate information about student finance. Pupils will work closely with current students from across the partnership to obtain first-hand information about studying at a higher level. Booking reference: TMC07

Y9 Campus Visit TMC Openshaw Campus 15/05/2017 Year Group: 9 Number of places available: 60 This one day event is designed to give Y9 learners an opportunity to reflect on their options for the future, in advance of choosing their GCSE options. Learners will examine the implication of their choices and how these influence their future. The event includes a workshop, campus tour and the opportunity to speak with current undergraduate students from the various higher education providers. Explore Salford: English University of Salford 24/05/2017 Year Group: 12 Number of places available: 40 Taster sessions in both English Language and Literature enabling learners to find out about the different approaches to studying English, how important it is to develop their own writing skills and some of the key skills involved in analysing texts. Explore Salford: Creative Writing University of Salford 25/05/2017 Year Group: 12 Number of places available: 40 Taster sessions in both writing poetry and fiction. In these sessions, learners will learn some basic skills to improve their own creative writing, as well as exploring some of the key ideas around developing characters within fiction. Explore Salford: Society – Riot! University of Salford 07/06/2017 Year Group: 12 Number of places available: 40 This taster day will explore a powerful and infamous instance of street-level disobedience – the riots of 2011 which took place not only in London, but on our doorstep here in Salford and Manchester. Learners will analyse the 2011 riots by engaging in hands-on activities working with eye-witness accounts, reports, and media coverage – just like social scientists do. Exploring Sound will involve demonstrations and experiments involving acoustics and audio. By the end of the session learners will have a better idea of how sound behaves in nature and how we can capture and manipulate sound for various purposes. The session will entail some of our state of the art labs including recording studios, anechoic chamber, surround sound studios, and reverberant chamber. Having completed our Exploring Sound session you will definitely hear the world differently!

Healthcare is one of the most challenging and rewarding careers that people can go into. In this session, learners will use our state of the art simulation suites, which closely replicate a real hospital environment, to learn essential clinical skills. Explore Salford: Sport and Exercise University of Salford 19/06/2017 Year Group: 12 Number of places available: 40 ‘Bruising, balance and blu tack – the road to recovery following a sporting ankle injury’. The session comprises an interactive tour of the anatomy of the ankle, mechanisms of injury, functional deficits and the amazing powers of human recovery back to Sport. The role of Sports Rehabilitation therapists and Physiotherapists is explored with a view to gaining wider appreciation of what their training involves as well as career opportunities.

Explore Salford: Maths University of Salford On request Year Group: 9/10/11/12 Number of places available: 30 This session will see participants completing a Maths Roadshow, solving a series of fun and interactive maths-based puzzles. University of Manchester Year 12 Investment Challenge University of Manchester 29/06/2017 and 30/06/2017 Year Group: 12 Number of places available: 160–180 across 2 days The Investment Challenge is a fast-moving business simulation for Y12 learners. The challenge involves students trading on the financial markets as part of a competitive group learning experience. An academic workshop, campus tour and presentation introducing the Business School’s degree programmes complete the event. We deliver these events across two consecutive days to enable more students to attend (160–180 in total). The events aim to develop students’ awareness of Higher Education opportunities and career options as well supporting the development of their employability skills. The simulations are designed to support students’ work in Economics, Business and Applied Maths and meet the criteria for STEM enrichment and enhancement activities. Year 10 Stock Market Challenge University of Manchester 21/06/2017 Year Group: 10 Number of places available: 125 The Stock Market Challenge is a one day event for 25 teams of five Y10 pupils from schools across the region. The project is delivered in partnership with HSBC and Global Investor Simulations. Each participating school receives a free licence of the Global Investor resource. The event directly supports learning within several areas of curriculum, including Applied Maths, Economics and Business Studies. It also specifically meets the criteria for STEM enrichment and enhancement activities. At the event and with their use of the Global Investor resource in-school, students will develop their skills of communication, using mathematics and using ICT, and the key skills of problem-solving, self-management and working with others – all of which are key employability skills highly valued by employers across many industry sectors. The campus tour includes our Students’ Union, The University of Manchester Library, the Old Quadrangle (the oldest part of the University), some of our teaching buildings and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. We are throwing open our doors for our local neighbours to discover the variety of things we do. Year Group: 11–13 Number of places available: 40 per industry day Taster days to provide learners with the chance to experience first-hand what it is like to study a particular subject in a vocational environment. On the day learners will find out what it would be like to study that course, take part in a sample interactive workshop and do some revision skills. The visits will also include a tour of the campus, an opportunity to meet current students and find out all they want to know about student life. Students will develop a practical understanding of a HE subject area, develop knowledge of the range of courses available within a subject area and make informed decisions about their future.

Royal Northern College of Music Performing Arts Careers Day RNCM 29/06/2017 Year Group: 10–13 Number of places available: 500 This is a one-day conference at the RNCM for up to 500 students in Y10 to Y13 who are interested following a career in Theatre, Music, Dance and Music Theatre. It will also cover related careers such as costume design, sound, stage management, lighting, and production management. The day will include visiting speakers from major Performing Arts institutions such as LIPA, RADA, Central and Trinity Laban. It will also include workshops in areas such as choosing where to study and how to prepare for an audition, as well as performances from RNCM students. The day is designed to raise awareness of careers in the performing arts and appropriate routes through HE. Booking reference: RNCM01

Take to the Stage RNCM May – July 2017 Year Group: 10–13 Number of places available: 50 Take to the Stage is three-month evening programme of skills training in singing, acting and dance for up to 50 students from Y10 to Y13. The students will be mentored by RNCM students and will work alongside industry professionals from directors and choreographers to lighting, costume and set designers. The course will culminate in a full-scale musical theatre production. Throughout the course we will provide training and experience for students interested in musical theatre performance or theatre production. We will raise awareness of career progression and provide opportunities for interested students to act as assistants to the professionals and get direct experience of specific roles, for example Assistant Director and Assistant Stage Manager. For those that wish, the project can lead to a second performance opportunity during the next academic year. Note: Schools nominate students who will then attend the course in their own time. How to get into Pop Music RNCM May – July 2017 Year Group: 9–11 Number of places available: 30 How to get into Pop Music is a twomonth evening programme of training for up to 30 Y9–Y11 pupils with potential in vocals, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums. The students will be mentored by RNCM students following the new RNCM Popular Music degree and will work alongside industry professionals, from performers to sound engineers, event organisers and promoters. This will include opportunities for interested students to act as assistants to the professionals and get direct experience of specific roles. This course is designed to increase the skills of talented popular music performers in local schools by offering a programme of mentoring with RNCM Popular Music students, and training from specialist staff. It will also raise awareness of career progression, including interview and audition process. Note: Schools nominate students who will then attend the course in their own time. Young Explorers Concert RNCM 18/06/2017 Year Group: 7–11 Number of places available: 400 This is a concert for up to 400 pupils from Y7–Y11 designed to support curriculum music and link to BBC Ten Pieces. It will feature music from West Side Story by Bernstein, and also The Firebird by Stravinsky. The concert will be preceded by a morning workshop for all participants in which they will learn about being an orchestral music and pathways to studying music at university. It will also include information on related careers in concert management, stage management and arts administration. Toe by Toe Reading Project Manchester Metropolitan University June – July 2017 Year Group: 9 Number of places available: 10 Pupils will be taken through a highly structured, multi-sensory series of tasks, which will provide strategies to help them to improve their decoding skills when reading. This one day session on quantitative maths will shows participants how numbers work. It will be based at the National Football Museum where students will work on several small projects all of which will have a numbers and footballing theme. Challenges will be set and prizes will be given. It is targeted a Y9/10 pupils and will last for 3 hours, with 20 pupils per session (up to 5 dates will be available). By tailoring materials appropriate to their age and study level, the objective of the day is to embed numeracy into everyday applications. The day will be fun and kinetically active to ensure active attention, engagement and inclusion. The day will be complemented by a tour of the Museum. The intention of this workshop is to provide advice and guidance to young people about the importance of maintaining a professional online/digital profile. The focus will be on professional platforms, such as LinkedIn, rather than other social media platforms like Twitter. However, these social media platforms will still be discussed, as employers can potentially access these pages when researching candidates and the session will explore the significance of an individual’s electronic shadow. Developing networks and how to approach people of interest will also be discussed, as well as positive and experienced language. It promotes sustainable, healthy and nutritious food. It educates, informs and entertains through food and fun, providing skills and training to promote health, wellness and wellbeing. Sessions are available for up to 30 pupils and can be adapted for Y9–13. Sessions can be adapted to meet the needs of schools and topics which can be covered include: • What does realistic healthy eating looks like? • Eat to perform • Mood swings and fluctuations in sugar • Eating breakfast and enhancing mood (composition and portion) • Hydration and why it matters for the brain? • Avoiding simple sugars to keep blood sugars stable • B rain chemicals (neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine and acetylcholine) influence the way we think, feel and behave. Star Student Star Student is a large board game that introduces Board Game KS3 students to university and higher education through an exciting team activity. Human counters move around the board as each team answers a series of questions relating to university. Answers are given through mime, drawing, multiple choice questions and spelling, so there’s something for everyone. This can be delivered to a class of up to 30 at a time and takes around an hour to complete.
