SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMME 2017

Summer Schools are a fantastic way for your pupils to explore their future options, learn more about subjects that they are interested in, develop their skills, make new friends and have fun!

Mindful Mapping 11th – 13th July Non-Residential 20 places Hosted by The Whitworth Art Gallery (The University of Manchester) with contributions from the RNCM

Are your learners interested in bringing art, music, ideas and people together? This Summer School brings opportunities to work with Manchester International Festival, Royal Northern Music College and the Whitworth Art Gallery working with artists and musicians to explore personal journeys through a variety of mapping workshops. Learners will explore your journeys, compare these with others, make connections and look to the future, working individually and in teams to explore interesting, dynamic and fun ways to document your ideas, providing a framework for you to see where you are now and where you want to be in the future. Learners will see art and performances, as well as learn new techniques working with an artist and a musician. There will be opportunities for them to gain an understanding of different career paths in the arts, and how their potential areas of interest for study may benefit from the arts, whether Engineering, Mathematics or Art History. After three days, learners will get to show their work, whether an installation, performance or mini exhibition in the gallery or the park.

Explore Salford: Y10 Summer School 18th – 20th July (2 nights) Residential 40 places Hosted by University of Salford with contributions from Salford City College

As part of our Explore Salford outreach events, University of Salford are pleased to announce a new and exciting year 10 residential summer school in collaboration with Salford City College. Learners will be able to experience life on campus, meeting new people from different schools and trying out lots of new activities. There will be the opportunity to experience engaging, hands-on activities delivered by academic staff who teach on our degrees as well as the chance to visit Salford City College, where learners will be able to experience a different learning environment and learn about alternative routes within higher education. The summer school also features social activities both on- and off-campus, giving attendees the chance to get to know each other, make new friends and have fun!

As this is a residential summer school, learners will spend 2 nights at University of Salford’s sector-leading accommodation at Peel Park Quarter, with en-suite bathrooms and small double beds, giving them a taste of modern university life. Attendees will be supervised by responsible adults with full DBS checks at all times, including whilst staying in accommodation. All transport and food will be provided.

Trial and Error Non-Residential

This week long Summer School will give students the opportunity to explore risk taking, creative thinking, trialling, design and strategies for overcoming failure. We will develop a platform for generating creative ideas and encourage failing spectacularly to give students the opportunity to celebrate the disasters and acknowledge how “doing it the wrong way” will develop the most innovative creative outputs!

MadSkills @ MediaCityUK 18th – 20th July Non-Residential 60 places Hosted by Salford City College Booking contact: aiden.lucas@salfordcc.ac.uk

Salford City College are pleased to offer ‘Mad Skills @MediaCityUK’, an exciting 3 day summer school for year 10 students specialising in media related offering an insight into a vast array of progression routes in the media sector. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn alongside one of the college’s leading employers Unity Radio, undoubtedly gaining valuable experience and networking opportunities. The three days will consist of three interactive, hands-on activities which will be delivered by industry professionals and academic staff that currently teach on our Higher Education courses. Learners will also take part in projects in the final stages of the summer school, leading on and developing a closing concert and BBQ event for all summer school attendees. Unity Radio’s star-studded contacts will provide the entertainment for what promises to be a spectacular ending celebration! Over the three days we will provide catering, transport and all necessary equipment, attendees will also benefit by experiencing what life is like studying higher education as well as meeting new people from different schools. Learners will also have the opportunity to meet and work with our current Higher Education. They will get to hear about their experiences and routes in to Higher Education, and how much they have gained from studying Higher Education within a local college. All transport and food will be provided.

Salford City College would like to invite year 10 students in Salford and Trafford to attend our summer school MY FUTURE IN FOOTBALL in partnership with the Manchester United (MU) Foundation and the Football Association (FA). As part of this fantastic opportunity students will gain a L1 coaching award, experience of analysing sports performance using cutting edge technology, an understanding of the importance of sports science and nutrition in professional sport and how these areas can be studied on Higher Education courses. This will be delivered by expert coaching and teaching staff from the FA, MU Foundation and Salford City College. This is a 3 day non-residential running from 18 – 20 July at our Eccles Centre. Transport from your school, food, drinks and equipment are all included. Additionally, there will be tour of Old Trafford on the last day and finally a celebration music concert and BBQ at our FutureSkills @MediaCityUK Centre, organised by students on our media summer school. The emphasis is on how important studying at Higher Education is to a future career in professional sport, a better understanding of the career opportunities in sports such as football and how this is an achievable and realistic goal for those that attend. We will be supported by current Higher Education students at Salford City College, who will share their experience of studying beyond Level 3 and the career opportunities now available to them. All transport and food will be provided.

Inspiration.Education 26th – 28th June

At the Inspiration.Education event, your learners will spend three days immersed in life as a College and University student. Each day includes a range of hands-on student life experiences. They may be contemplating decisions about their future, asking themselves:

• “What is College life really like?”

Places limited to 5 per school in the first instance Hosted by Bolton College, Bury College and University of Bolton

• “Is Higher Education right for me?” On day one, they will be at Bolton College discovering what life is like as a College student. Learners will enjoy tasters of Creative/Media or STEM subject sessions, with the chance to seek advice and guidance from subject staff. Day two sees learners at Bury College continuing their discovery of College life, with the additional opportunity to explore Higher Education options. The final day takes learners to Bolton University, completing their Inspiration.Education journey by sampling University courses. In the afternoon there will be a celebration event to affirm and commend their participation.


Minecrafting Ceramic Narratives 7th – 10th August Non-Residential 8 places Hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University

Blurring the boundaries between digital and physical making, this Summer School will allow students to develop skills in researching, translating ideas, and using RaspberryPi. Students will develop new and exciting surfaces for ceramic ware by translating traditional ceramic scenes into innovative modern depictions, utilising Manchester School of Art’s specialist workshops and equipment. Learning outcomes: • To develop skills working both digitally and within traditional hand making. • To develop greater understanding of coding and use of RasperryPi. • To experience workshops available at MMU • Utilise interests in Minecraft to explore creative possibilities.
