GILLIAN MENICHINO – MUSICIAN INTRODUCTION
EXPERIENCE
As a dedicated composer at the very early stage of my career, I believe it is crucial to my development, both creatively and professionally, to work interactively with highly experienced performers during the processes of writing new music. I completed my PhD in music composition and contemporary music at the Royal Northern College of Music (2010 – 2014) and during the course I concentrated primarily on composition as form, process and product. In the processes of writing I am concerned with the development of expressive narrative musical structures. This is achieved through the creation of distinctive sound-worlds within two specific areas of compositional activity, these being original compositions and re-compositions.
My work has been featured in the Steve Mackey Festival in June 2008, the James MacMillan Festival in April 2009, the Judith Weir Festival in March 2011, the St. Magnus Festival in June of 2011, the Reflections of Debussy Festival in June of 2012 and in the Beethoven Festival in June of 2013. In addition, I have twice written for the BBC Singers where they showcased and recorded my works at the Maida Vale Studios in London. I have also written for the RNCM Symphony Orchestra and had works premiered on Composer's Brand New Days at the Royal Northern College of Music and collaborated on dance projects with the Northern Ballet School in Manchester. As a Royal Northern College of Music Gold Medal composer, I was commissioned to write a new work to be premiered in the Gold Medal Competition in June of 2009. I undertook collaborative workshops with the London Sinfonietta in creating a work for small chamber ensemble that was premiered on June 22 at the St. Magnus Festival. Further notable engagements include a premiere of two of my new works at the British Museum, London in July of 2013 during the Royal Northern College of Music Sound Histories Project and a premiere of my baroque trio written for Trio Aporia and performed at the Martin Harris Centre in the University of Manchester in October of 2013. Masterclasses: Nigel Clark, Kenneth Hesketh, Kalevei Aho, Oscar Edelstein, Simon Bainbridge, Steve Mackey, James MacMillan, Brian Ferneyhough (March 1, 2011), and Judith Weir (March 2011), Fredric Rzewski (Mar. 21, 2011), Tim Garland (June 2012).
