As we come together for our final concert of season 14, “Pride: Now, Then, And Forever,” I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude for the journey we have embarked upon together this season. This concert is more than just a musical experience—it is a testament to the power of unity, understanding, and celebration of diversity. Our chorus has undergone a transformation in the past three years, symbolizing our commitment to growth and inclusivity. It is essential that we honor the legacy of those who have come before us, appreciate the perspectives of our current members, and embrace the promise of those who will carry our mission forward.

I am thrilled to highlight two exceptional world-commissioned pieces that will be premiered tonight. “Don’t Say Gay” bravely tackles the complexities of our current political climate in Florida, shedding light on important issues with courage mixed in with some comical satire. In contrast, “We’ve Come Through the Storm, “ written by two special friends of mine, Tom Nichols and Dan Chadburn, serves as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the strength we find in unity. This piece encapsulates the very essence of our concert, emphasizing the commonalities that bind us all together.

Through the transformative power of music, we are reminded of our common humanity and the connections that bind us together. Let this evening be a celebration of diversity, a tribute to the bonds that unite us, and a testament to the enduring power of harmony and understanding.

Thank you for being a part of this unforgettable evening. Your support gives us the courage and strength to continue sharing our mission through our music.

Sincerely,

Beyond the artistry of music, GMCSF emerges as a formidable force dedicated to transcending social barriers while visibly and powerfully advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. Being a part of the Chorus is more than simply singing; it’s a profound expression of LGBTQ+ identity. The members become living embodiments of positivity, serving as role models for the younger generation, actively contributing to the community, and helping those in need.

GMCSF’s impact resonates far and wide as it brings live music to the region through grand-scale concerts in prestigious venues, far-reaching community engagements, and meaningful volunteer initiatives. Boasting over 180 talented singing members, GMCSF proudly stands as the top, award-winning LGBTQ+ nonprofit arts organization in the state, the largest gay men’s chorus in the southeastern United States, and ranks among the nation’s top ten LGBTQ+ choruses. Led by Artistic Director Gabe Salazar, more than 25,000 individuals are captivated each year by the Chorus’s performances, solidifying its position as a vital cultural asset within the LGBTQ+ landscape in the heart of South Florida. GMCSF reached a significant milestone in December 2016 when we collaborated with SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO HOLLYWOOD to perform our holiday concert at Hard Rock Live! The two entities have continued this partnership, now in its seventh year. Prior guest artists have included Linda Eder, Alan Cumming, Matthew Morrison, Jordin Sparks, Shoshana Bean, and most recently, Amber Riley.

COMMISSIONED FOR GMCSF

“Don’t Say Gay” Words and Music by Dave Volpe With support from the Svane Family Foundation.

Being in a gay chorus is, among many things, an act of defiance: not only are we not going anywhere, but we’re going to stand firm and sing about our experience so that others can see us and be inspired to rise up. It only seemed appropriate that Don’t Say Gay be a direct calling out of the hypocrisy surrounding these laws and the politicians creating them in a way that only a gay chorus can: with humor, poignancy, and a kick line.

While it’s important to me that the piece be droll and poke fun at our elected leaders, it is equally important that we address the effect on the entirety of our community, not just the gays. So the lyrics had to evolve beyond don’t say gay. First, it becomes “don’t do drag” to address the absurdity of passing laws that ban drag while our children die in their schools at the hands of legally acquired firearms. Eventually, we land on “don’t say they,” a more severe section devoted to our trans brethren, who have arguably endured the most of any of us.

I hope all singers have fun with my songs and arrangments. For Don’t Say Gay, I hope this song inspires everyone to take a stand. What else is art for if not to make an impact and, even in a small way, change the world?

GAY MEN’S CHORUS OF SOUTH FLORIDA
PROGRAM NOTES
“We’ve

Come Through the Storm” Words and Music by Tom

In 2023, the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) performed one of Tom and Dan’s compositions, “I Dream of a Time,” originally written for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington’s 20th Anniversary Concert at the Kennedy Center in 2001. At the time, GALA Choruses around the country had begun to offer a safe space for wandering LGBTQ+ people to find each other and connect as a family of choice. Still, many years before marriage equality, our freedom both to love and marry the person we desired was illegal. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” prevented many of us from serving openly as ourselves in the military. More than twenty years later, the song’s themes of belonging to a family of choice and love’s power to resolve conflicts remain true.

Last fall, the Artistic Director of GMCSF, Gabe Salazar, asked us to write a song for the 2024 June Pride Concert, Pride: Then, Now and Forever. Gabe wanted the song to speak to the multigenerational community of the chorus membership. We began writing down ideas for lyrics about who we are as a community and what makes us unique, strong, and resilient. Lyrics that would remind us:

• We are a diverse community (orientation, identity, expression), yet we are all connected to each other. There is much more that connects us than could ever tear us apart.

• If we help each other and lift each other up, problems that were once impossible suddenly become possible. For example, marriage equality is something many of the older chorus members could never have imagined in their lifetime.

• We are not afraid; Pride started as an act of resistance. We continue this fight today to keep the protections we have gained and to protect our queer youth and trans family members. Our community and its allies fought hard in the 80s and 90s to secure resources for HIV/AIDS research. Treatments were developed so that HIV/AIDS became something we can live with, no longer the death sentence it once was.

• By continuing to work together, we can build a better world for us all.

We’ve come through the storm.

Please take a moment to look around the audience this evening and take in the hundreds of people from a vast range of backgrounds who are assembled here. Some are gay. Some are allies. Some are trans. Some are non-binary. You likely see a variety of races and ethnicities and certainly a range of ages. Still, as different as we all are…tonight, we are one community. Concerts by the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) are not just gathering places for those of us who enjoy quality music but also for those of us who believe in a better future for all people. As a member of the GMCSF family, you belong to a group of amazing individuals who believe in loving freely and living authentically. Our collective strength makes us powerful, and I thank you for being here.

Tonight’s concert is a celebration of Pride across generations and an acknowledgment that our differences should be celebrated, and we have more in common than we sometimes realize. I hope being here this evening with your GMCSF family makes you feel great about who you are. This room of concertgoers is just the tip of the iceberg. In South Florida alone, there are hundreds of thousands in our LGBTQ+ family. Our Chorus serves as the voice for those thousands and you. At a time when people are trying to silence our community, we stand proudly and sing loudly.

Please support our music and our mission with your charitable donation. Admissions cover less than 26% of the work we do, so we need your support to bring our messages of love and inclusion to people throughout the region. We are in the final stages of a matching campaign. If you donate before June 30, your gift will be doubled by generous donors Dan Chadburn and Tom Nichols. What a great time to make sure our community has a voice and that voice is heard in as many places as possible.

Have a wonderful summer. PLEASE VOTE!

GAY MEN’S CHORUS OF SOUTH FLORIDA

WE’VE COME SO FAR IN OUR LIFETIME

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going! So many of us recall when television would never show two people of the same gender sharing a kiss… or holding hands. Now, we live in a time when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. We’ve accomplished so much, yet there is much more to do. Since the late 1970s, the LGBTQ+ Choral Movement has been a crucial tool for advocacy, unity, and education. GMCSF is proud to continue this legacy through our music. We are pleased to serve as cultural ambassadors for our community and provide a voice for those who do not have one. Help ensure this work continues by joining The Pegasus Society’s planned giving program. In addition, by including GMCSF in your estate planning, you can help sustain our organization and keep our voices active long into the future.

We invite you to join the members of The Pegasus Society today. If you want to amend your current estate, contact Fidel Garcia at (954) 763-2266 ext. 111 or fgarcia@gmcsf. org. Establish a Legacy Fund with our community partner, The Our Fund Foundation; contact Mark Blaylock at 954-565-1090 or email MBlaylock@Our-Fund.org.

GAY MEN’S CHORUS OF SOUTH FLORIDA
PEGASUS SOCIETY

1942-2023

Dedicated by his husband

FINDING A DEEP SENSE OF MEANING AND PURPOSE THROUGH GMCSF

Since they met in 1984, LGBTQ+ choruses have been a major part of Fred Boykin and Jack Killen’s lives. Fred was a founding member of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (GMCW) in June of 1981 and served in various leadership positions of GMCW, including board chair for three years in the 1990s. The sense of family and community Fred and Jack both found in GMCW was profound and powerful, especially as GMCW lost 60 members to HIV/AIDS over the early decades of the epidemic.

Upon their relocation to Ft Lauderdale in 2016, Fred and Jack quickly found a new home in the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF). Fred’s leadership journey continued as he joined GMCSF’s leadership team, served as chorus president for two years, and has been chair of the board of the chorus for the past two seasons. Inspired by the GMCSF family, Jack, a former high school band enthusiast, reignited his passion for music by picking up the French horn again. He now proudly serves as a member of the South Florida Pride Concert Band, also taking on the role of their librarian.

Fred and Jack are dedicated supporters and volunteers. They explain, “We feel that the mission of GMCSF – to open hearts and change minds – is as important as ever. Being part of this vibrant and important organization brings a deep sense of meaning and purpose to our lives.” And while this musical couple tells us they are grateful for the hard work and dedication of the chorus’ staff, members, volunteers, and supporters, the truth is our organization is extremely grateful to them for their belief in equality, their support of our Chorus, and their dedication to serving the LGBTQ+ community.
