FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends of Curley: “Where Brotherhood Begins” has been a tagline used by Curley for a good number of years, and I believe it captures something unique about the school. While we who were in earlier classes did not use that expression, it resonates with us because of the bonds we have experienced over decades. Today, the majority of new students will explain that “brotherhood” is a reason they choose to attend Curley. Over the years, students become even more articulate on this quality which defines a relationship.

St. Francis of Assisi, in the early 13th century noted, “the Lord gave me brothers.” The presence of the Friars at Curley, living a communal life on the property (indeed in a section of the building), I trust has influenced that concept of brotherhood. The Friars themselves are a diverse group, and there is always give-and-take in community living. The Friars believe that is a gift to be shared, helping young men appreciate each one’s unique gifts, while forming first a class, and then an extended student body, and ultimately a brotherhood shared with men as far back as the first graduates in 1965.

“Brother” and “sister” are also terms rich in Christian meaning, for Jesus has told us we can all call his heavenly Father “our Father.” As such, it is not unusual to hear a faith congregation addressed as “sisters and brothers,” and the congregation begins to see itself as a “family.” The spread of the Church around the world has been by bringing new brothers and sisters into the Christian fold. As a Curley family, students not only gather together, but regularly pray, eat, study, compete and recreate together. This is the basis of lasting friendships which enrich life, and often grow outward to include others. On a personal note, I think of how many Curley parents I have also met over the years who have become friends.

This issue of CURLEY has brotherhood as a unifying thread, from how it is explained and celebrated, to how it is lived in different situations. I trust that the Curley brotherhood is an experience that will only grow over time, and continue to enrich lives.

Lastly, the end of this school year saw the regular events unfolding and being celebrated, and all are grateful after the challenges of the past two years. With best wishes to the newest graduates of the Class of 2022, and congratulations to the newest Golden Friars from the Class of 1972, the school is also preparing to welcome its newest brothers, the Class of 2026, and their families. We see God’s blessings in many ways, and surely they will be visible in the pages of this magazine.

BLACKFRIARS’ THEATRE PRESENTED “A SALUTE TO SONDHEIM”

This year the spring musical was “A Salute to Sondheim.” Stephen Sondheim, one of Broadway’s greatest composers and lyricists, passed away on November 26, 2021 at the age of 91. The show was a musical revue highlighting the many works of Mr. Sondheim over the last 60 years.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH ASSEMBLY

HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTIONS

On February 24th, Curley welcomed 31 new members of the Cardinal Lawrence Shehan Chapter of the National Honor Society. Selection for the NHS is based on four criteria: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Also recognized at the assembly were inductees to the Spanish and Math National Honor Societies.

CAREER DAY

The school hosted Career Day on March 11th. Twenty-nine alumni and friends offered their time to speak to Curley students about their careers and career journeys. Delivering the keynote address to the entire student body in the Suehle Auditorium was Rob Commodari ’85 who spoke about listening to the voice inside to help determine what career path to choose.

The Black Student Union of Curley sponsored an assembly to celebrate Black History Month. A small group of students sang with moderator Ms. Grayson “You Have Won The Victory,” accompanied by Mr. Ryan and the Praise Band. Another group recited the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black National Anthem.

LIVING STATIONS Members of the senior class brought to life an ancient Christian tradition, the Stations of the Cross. Walking the final steps with Jesus is a powerful way to enter into the mystery of his death and resurrection. The Curley Schola provided prayerful and poignant music as the stations unfolded.

SENIOR BONAVENTURE SCHOLARS PRESENT CAPSTONE PROJECTS The St. Bonaventure Scholars are a part of the Honors Pathway for students seeking a rigorous academic challenge. Students are required to complete a Capstone project (internship, research paper, etc.) during senior year and make a presentation to the Scholars and faculty.

CURLEY BANDS STRIKE GOLD AND SILVER

Four Curley Bands participated in the Orlando Heritage Music Festival held at Universal Studios, Florida. The Beginning Percussion Ensemble played two selections and was awarded the highest possible score of Gold. The Advanced Percussion Ensemble played two selections and was also awarded Gold, and 1st place among competing bands. Curley’s Symphonic Band performed three pieces and was rewarded with a Silver score and 3rd place ranking.

The Jazz Ensemble was the last of the Curley bands to perform and finished strong with Gold and 1st place.

DISTINCTIVE SCHOLARS

The Distinctive Scholars Convocation for the secondary schools of the Archdiocese of Baltimore took place at Curley on Thursday, April 7, 2022. This annual convocation recognizes the academic achievements of the top students over the course of their four-year high school careers.

BACCALAUREATE MASS AND GRADUATION AWARDS FOR THE CLASS OF 2022

DONATIONS TO UKRAINE HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), a club geared towards students interested in science careers, organized a donation drive to support those affected by the crisis in Ukraine. The Curley community donated over 30 boxes of food and personal care items. The St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church picked up the items and shipped them to Ukraine.

STUDENT ART SHOW For the week of April 30 – May 7, the art students of Curley had their work on exhibit in the auditorium lobby.

The works included paintings, photos, silhouettes, pen/ pencil sketches and many other pieces.

NOTES Gala 2022 “Under The Stars” A Huge Success This year’s dinner-auction was held on Saturday, April 9th. Close to 500 alumni and friends of the school attended the event which was held inperson for the first time in three years. Proceeds from the evening exceeded $224,000, the highest total in the 27 years of hosting the Curley Gala.

Thank you to the numerous volunteers, attendees, sponsors, and those who donated gifts. It certainly was a wonderful night for the school!

Gala Raffle Sets Record

The raffle, held in conjunction with the dinnerauction, also eclipsed its previous high in ticket sales totaling just over $100,000. Curley students did an incredible job selling tickets! 83 students returned $200 or more. The grand prize this year was a 2022 Jeep Compass Latitude donated by Don White’s Timonium Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram. Thank you to Andy and Michelle White for their generous support of this fundraiser.

Two New Named Scholarships Established We are pleased to announce that current and future Curley men will benefit from two recently endowed scholarships. The Jean Vecchiarelli Navitskis Memorial Scholarship was established through the generosity of Tony Navistskis ’65 and his family. The Forsht Family Scholarship will also be awarded thanks to the support of Tim ’67 & Judy Earnest. Grants from both scholarship funds will provide financial assistance to students with need. The minimum amount to establish a named scholarship at Curley is $25,000. The school’s endowment now boasts 61 scholarships.

Alumnus Remembered Through Scholarship Award The Mark Borowy ’72 Scholarship will be awarded annually to a rising sophomore and rising junior at Curley. Criteria for the award includes financial need, good academic standing, and the recipient must be an active member of the school community.

The amount of the grant is $1,000 and will be credited to the student’s tuition for the following school year. Family and friends established the award to honor Borowy who passed away in June of 2021.

JOHN GRUND ’84

John Grund grew up in Frankford Gardens right off Sinclair Lane, and attended St. Anthony of Padua School. While many of his friends were going to local public high schools, John and his three sisters all went to Catholic ones, he to Curley and his sisters to Catholic High. He credits his parents for their commitment to education, as well as encouragement and support from his entire family. While John will admit he wasn’t an overly involved student, preferring to get back to the neighborhood to interact with his friends, he now recognizes how Curley prepared him for college and his career. “I remember the sense of discipline and nightly homework, and the expectations of doing one’s best as we prepared for college. Annoyances at the time, such as having a formal dress code, later helped me appreciate the importance of structure and rules.”

Attending the University of Maryland, College Park, and majoring in business and finance, John recalls, “Curley had me over-prepared.” He did well in school, had the benefit of a professor who offered great career advice, and who introduced him to General Electric where he went to work after graduation, remembering, “they had a reputation for great training programs, and that proved to be the case.” That period had him living in Connecticut for five years, and working there as well as in New York City, San Francisco and Leeds, England. John had a fair amount of travel, even internationally. “It gave me great exposure to different people, paths and career options, but I also realized that I would likely have to move with some frequency if I stayed with GE. That was not very appealing to me.”

Instead, John decided to pursue his M.B.A., and he was accepted at Harvard Business School, from which he graduated in 1995. His goal was then to return to Maryland, and to work for a smaller firm. He started his new career with a small consulting firm (First Annapolis Consulting), progressed to the partner level and sold the company in 2017 after a 20+ year run. He is now working with younger colleagues in a new start-up, finding a very different experience from his first effort some 20 years before given the pace of change with technology advancements 8

and entirely new business models. That said, he enjoys helping his colleagues build a new firm as they were so loyal to him at First Annapolis.

Married for 27 years to Mary, and with a daughter who is a recent graduate of Emory University and now lives in Atlanta, John still has most of his family in the Baltimore area. John lives in the Annapolis area and his new firm has an office in downtown Annapolis. Enjoying sports, John is a fan of the Ravens and Orioles, and of all Terps sports. He strives to exercise as much as possible, particularly enjoys walking, and he does some informal career counseling and mentoring as he has kept in touch with a lot of people he has met and worked with over the years.

Feeling a little too young to retire, and finding he remains curious about so many new things, John also feels a desire to help causes close to his heart, one of which is Curley.

His financial support includes establishing a scholarship in his parents’ names as a tribute to their commitment to education, presenting at Career Day, and serving on the Curley School Board. John observes, “I very much believe loyalty matters, and I wanted to get involved beyond just making a financial contribution. I believe in the values Curley promotes, and I want to help a school that got me on my way. I want other young men to experience the life-changing benefits I have had from my Curley education and the strong foundation it provided as I embarked on my career.”

Asked what he finds most different about Curley, John notes the use of technology, and how that helped the school quickly adapt during the pandemic. “I like the facility upgrades, but I also appreciate that the foundational principles are the same. The school still wants the student to challenge himself and be a solid citizen no matter what path he pursues.”

With the insights of a Board member, John says he has learned “Curley’s strength is its

mission, and it has a proven track record in preparing young men for the future. The Board works with the administration to face the business challenges of a school, and to help assure the resources are there for the school to adapt and stay current. It is good to see so many alumni share these convictions about Curley committing time and effort to pay it forward.”

John urges today’s students to respect the investment their families and the school community are making in them, and to always have a near-term set of goals, which they update on a regular basis. “Make the most of the different activities that are available in high school, build a network with fellow students, faculty and alumni, and develop strong work habits that are valuable in college and beyond. There is a lot to be said for showing up on time, having pride in your work, having effective communication skills, and being a team player. Nailing the basics will have you ready for so many different paths.”

Summarizing the reasons for his commitment John readily states, “I know Curley and Catholic High gave my parents peace of mind that they were offering me and my sisters an opportunity, and that we would be ready for college or whatever path we chose. Looking back, I know Curley was foundational for me, and in more ways than just academics.

I was prepared for the next steps in life, and my parents were correct in stating that an investment in our education was one of the best investments they could ever make. That was a tremendous sacrifice on their part, and I will always be so grateful. I hope to make the same investments for others that my folks made for us.”

What is a “Golden Friar” you ask?

By Greg Loftus ’95 At Curley, a Golden Friar is one who has reached 50 years since graduation. The festivities around this special anniversary and reunion began with the Class of 1965, and have grown into a series of events in which these alumni can participate. To start their celebration, the Golden Friars are invited

to a Mass at the school, joining with the current student body in prayer and thanksgiving. That event also affords an opportunity for socializing, and a tour of the school.

Each year some of the alumni who attend have not been back to the corner of Sinclair and Erdman for a long time, even five decades. Seeing the additions and changes around the building inspire a flood of memories and shared stories. It doesn’t take long to see that the brotherhood is still strong with each class, as they laugh and reminisce with stories of different teachers, various events and the comradery that high school creates. Bob Doerfler ’72, who recently attended his reunion, shared “The opportunity to celebrate Mass with the students, tour the school, and then the evening celebration were wonderful experiences, especially for me who has lived in Colorado for the past 46 years.”

Each class has also had a celebratory dinner, one that was combined for the Classes of 1970 and 1971 because of the pandemic.

This year members of the class of 1972 and their guests gathered at the Boumi Temple for their reunion dinner. With a welcome from the school administration, and a prayer for the deceased members of the class, a class member then shares a few memories. This year

Neil Cashen addressed his classmates, sparking more memories from their times at Curley, and the stories and laughs continued. Every year, following a group photo, the class has been invited to sing the school’s Alma Mater, a song that was new in the 1960s, regularly sung at special occasions, and still known by the current student body.

Doerfler shared, “When Neil reminded us what turbulence there was in the world in 1968 when we met at Curley for the first time as freshmen, from disparate neighborhoods, and probably at Curley because our parents wanted us there, none of us could have dreamed of the Brotherhood that was created. And yet, on May 20th we toasted and celebrated our Brotherhood, now more than 50 years old. It was well worth the trip.”

The Golden Friars are also invited to participate in graduation, following the graduating class into the cathedral, and witnessing a ceremony that has the same basic format as 50 years before. Beginning with the Class of 1965, each Golden Friar class has made a gift of an endowed scholarship, one for which a preference will be given to students who are grandsons of members of that class.

Thanks to all of the Golden Friars who continue to support their Alma Mater. Curley would not be the thriving institution and home to the brotherhood that it is today without the support of its valued alumni. So much has changed, yet so much remains the same.

“Where Brotherhood Begins” proclaims the banner on Curley’s chimney. It’s not just a saying, but a reality that starts with the freshman retreat, builds over the years with special events and growing relationships, reaches a milestone at commencement, and continues for life.

While it is speaking of an intangible quality, it is nonetheless very real. It is something one will notice the moment they step through the doors of Archbishop Curley: a sense of family and brotherhood central to the school’s identity and mission.

One might say the legacy of Archbishop Curley High School is obvious in its more than 8,000 graduates, but the real legacy is when they have truly become men of faith, character, and scholarship, and men who care about others in the world. Brotherhood can and should extend to others over the course of one’s life.

Having a brotherhood one can rely on, gives a perspective about what is important in life, and further enhances everything one has learned. When a young man becomes a part of the Curley Brotherhood, the goal is for him to learn how a man should lead, prepare for a future family, and even advance in his personal and professional lives. The Curley Brotherhood is committed to developing young men with these skills and ideals as part of the school’s mission.

Franciscan PERSPECTIVE Lessons Learned

For forty-two years, planning and teaching lessons has been a major part of my daily life. As young Curley men were learning to conjugate Spanish verbs through my lessons, I was learning lessons from the Friars: what is Catholicism; who was St. Francis of Assisi; what does being “Franciscan” mean; and how do I, as a Curley teacher, instill Franciscan values into my students?

Coming from a small town in western Maryland and growing up in the Methodist church, I had little knowledge of the Catholic faith beyond attending events and the occasional Mass at Bishop Walsh High School (in Cumberland) with my friends. As a result, my first lesson in Catholicism came very quickly as I learned the differences in the titles of “Father,” “Friar,” and “Brother.”

During my first years at Curley, the compassion, kindness, and dedication of the Friars to educating young men taught me, by their example, how to be a better teacher and a better person. I learned the tenets of Catholicism and the beauty of the Mass. As I watched, absorbed, and learned, my desire to convert to Catholicism grew. With the help and guidance of Fr. Michael Sajda, my desire became a reality. As I stood in the chapel at Curley, among the Friars and my friends, and professed my faith, a great feeling of peace came over me—a feeling that still happens every time I attend Mass.

As the years passed, many lessons on St. Francis were taught through homilies, retreats, and conversations with my colleagues and students.

The most impactful and meaningful lessons were given to me while on a pilgrimage to Assisi in 2009. As my fellow pilgrims and I walked the cobbled streets of Assisi, in the footsteps of St. Francis, I finally understood the great impact this one man had on the world and what “being Franciscan” truly meant. Annie’s lessons made St. Francis and his teachings come alive!

While standing and renewing my baptismal vows at the same font where St. Francis and St. Clare were baptized, and while sitting in the Portiuncula for Mass and being able to touch the same walls at St. Francis touched, I experienced the gentleness, the peacefulness, the kindness, and the compassion of St. Francis filling my heart. Walking the paths and living for this brief time the lessons of St. Francis changed me. I returned to Curley wanting to be a better teacher to my students, a better friend, a better colleague and a better person. I wanted to try to instill in my students the wonderful qualities inherent to St. Francis. I am still trying.

As my retirement nears, I am still learning lessons from the Friars, my colleagues and my students. Wherever I go there always seems to be an alum who remembers and reminisces about the lessons he learned at Curley, not only in the classrooms, but from his experiences with the Friars, his teachers, and his classmates.

Curley, imbued with the spirit of St. Francis, teaches all who enter the values of kindness, compassion, brotherhood and love. I am grateful Barry and Pat Brownlee, Kathy Maskell, and Cheryl Jose experience the for the many lessons I have beauty of Assisi while on a Franciscan Pilgrimage learned, for the dedication of the Friars, teachers, and staff with whom I have worked, and especially for the wonderful young men who make Curley a lasting brotherhood.

Permanent Deacons A Brotherhood of a Different Kind In Chapter 6 of the Acts of The Apostles, the Twelve selected upstanding men in the community to serve as deacons. “Deacon” comes from the Greek word for “servant.” It was the work of the deacon to preach the word of God, assisting the Twelve in their ministry, and being a servant, a brother, to the community.

The deacon disappeared from the history of the Church for over a thousand years until the Second Vatican Council, in the early 1960’s, revived this ministry, which has come to be known as the Permanent Diaconate.

Curley has several alumni who have been called and ordained to the Permanent Diaconate including Herman Wilkins ’69, Michael Dvorak ’85, Doug Kendzierski ’83 and John Micciche ’79.

When I asked them how the Holy Spirit prompted them to seek the diaconate, each had a different answer. For Doug, it was a gradual realization, fed by the Franciscan nuns and friars who taught him and priests who befriended him. For John, someone actually asked him if he ever thought about it. For Herman, it was a spiritual experience during the funeral of his ten-month old daughter. The Spirit of God does work in varied and sundry ways.

All these men are involved in parish ministry: Mike at St. Joseph’s in Sykesville; Doug at St. Leo the Great in Little Italy; Herman at St. Margaret in Bel Air; John at the pastorate in Rosedale-Overlea. Although they are in different settings, their ministry revolves around the celebration of the

sacraments, preaching, assisting at weekend liturgies, and walking with the people through the events of their lives.

Wilkins retired from the Maryland Transportation Police and has been a deacon for over 23 years. He is the Faith Formation Director at St. Margaret Church, but finds his most fulfilling moments when he is helping a family grieve the loss of a loved one. He explains that he tries “to be right with the families, knowing that I cannot fix everything, but hopefully by just being present to them will provide some strength and eventually peace.”

Micciche remembers the brotherhood at Curley and feels the same with his brother deacons. For him, “proclaiming the Word, preaching and ministering at the altar for Mass is the height of my ministry.” John also continues with his music ministry at St. Clement’s.

Kendzierski, who works for UMBC, is involved with the adult RCIA program and has hosted the “Theology on Tap” series for young adults where he shares his experience of faith and discusses how God works in people’s lives. “The opportunity to share in parish life,” he says, “and become a member of so many families is the most fulfilling aspect.”

All agree that being a brother to the people they serve is of singular importance in their ministry. Their experiences of work, marriage and family are evident in their homilies and how they witness their faith and relate to others. It is a brotherhood of a different kind.

By Barry Stitz ’87 Curley alumni George ’01 and Pete ’03 Bakoulas are the proud owners of one of the more than 35,000 food truck businesses operating in the United States. The brothers are part of an industry that has grown at an average annual rate of 12.1% since 2016. While their introduction to “food service” began with catering some small events on the side, their dream of giving everyone else the taste of Greece started much earlier in life in their home. “Food was a part of our upbringing, and family dinners are a part of our Greek culture,” George explains. “My brother and I spent countless hours in the kitchen with my mother where we learned many recipes passed down from earlier generations.”

In 2015, despite both working full-time jobs, the brothers decided the time was right to take a leap of faith. The pair had gained experience in sales and marketing through previous jobs, and Pete had worked in the restaurant industry. The siblings also had the support of their parents. “We truly are a family business,” says Pete. “My dad helps us keep our trucks on the road and my mom plays a big role in the food preparation.” George adds, “We designed and built the trucks ourselves and all the recipes are our own.” This approach has proven successful as B’More Greek Grill has continued to expand with two trucks on the road, seven days a week. They also own a third truck used solely for boxed lunches.

A typical day usually begins at 6:00 am, and 15-hour work days aren’t uncommon. Service is the easy part of the job according to the duo. Much more goes into making sure the end product is delicious food for their customers. This includes the prep work. “We do our own shopping and only use quality ingredients,” says Pete. This means having some products imported from Greece. He also stresses the importance of allowing their food to properly marinate for 24-36 hours. Trucks then have to be loaded and driven to the site. Successfully serving lunch and dinner doesn’t conclude the day. They remain responsible for securing new locations for their trucks, obtaining permits, and making sure they properly market their business through various social media outlets as this plays a significant role in attracting customers. “It’s a lot of hours, but we are blessed to have each other,” George offers.

While the pandemic has negatively affected many businesses in the 14 CURLEY Magazine | Summer 2022

food industry, it provided B’More Greek Grill the opportunity to provide a much needed service to healthcare workers and other essential personnel. “The large corporations and college campuses that made up the majority of our business were shut down and people were working from home,” Pete shares. “However, hospitals were in need of a food provider for their doctors and nurses since the cafeterias weren’t open. We were able to answer the call and be onsite,” he declares.

“We also provided boxed lunches to members of the National Guard when they were overseeing the distribution of the vaccine at Ravens Stadium.”

The Bakoulas brothers compare their work relationship to the one they had as teammates playing for the Curley soccer team. “Things can get pretty hectic in the truck. We butt heads sometimes, but when it is ‘game time’ we are one and can count on each other,” says George. Pete agrees, but admits working so closely can have its challenges. “We’re moving 100 miles an hour in a very compact space,” he points out. They both chuckle recounting the story of a customer who was worried when she saw the truck shaking. “My brother and I were bouncing around the truck getting the food prepared when we heard a voice ask, ‘Are you okay in there?’” George recalls.

Not to be lost in the long workdays on the truck is the brothers’ ultimate goal of showcasing their Greek cuisine via a “brick and mortar” establishment. “We want to open a place where our customers are able to get quality food in a timely manner,” notes George. “Similar to a Chipotle,” he adds. However, the brothers plan to continue operating the trucks as they have several long-term contracts with companies in place. Pete also hopes down the road they can act on feedback received from several customers. “Many people have told us that we should bottle and sell our family sauces and dressings. Getting them on a shelf in the grocery store would be outstanding.”

Seeing how much their business has grown in a relatively short period has been rewarding for the Curley alums.

However, this doesn’t compare to that for which they are most grateful for.

“Seeing how proud our parents are of us for starting this business, using recipes The brothers pictured with their mom passed down from them, is the best part,” maintains George. “We’re together as a family every day at work.

This is the true blessing,” the younger Bakoulas concludes.

Varsity Lacrosse finished the season with an overall record of 13-4, including an undefeated record in conference, culminating in a 15-10 victory over Indian Creek in the MIAA Conference championship game played at Navy-Marine Corp Stadium on May 20th. The team finished the season ranked #16 by Varsity Sports Network and named as an Honorable Mention in the Baltimore Sun’s Top 15.

RICKY SCHISSLER NAMED “FR. JULIAN” ATHLETE OF THE YEAR RIcky Schissler was named the school’s Athlete of the Year at the Baccalaureate Mass held on May 25th. Schissler, a four-year starter on the varsity soccer team, concluded his Friar athletic career with a stellar senior season. Jere and Christine Danaher celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 10th with their children and grandchildren. In attendance were four Catholic High women, two Curley men, and one St. Ursula lad. Jere and Christine were married at St. Brendan’s in Riverside, RI in 1972. His best man was brother Rick Danaher ’66, and groomsmen included Gene Grady ’66 and Dave Danaher ’70.

Class of 1969 Larry Crouse celebrated the birth of his 5th grandchild, Garrett Lang, who was born on March 21st. Garrett joins Juliet, Alexander, Owen and Connor as the youngest member of the Crouse family.

Class of 1971 Three Curley alums recently traveled to Florida to play in the JSB Baseball Tournament at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex. Norb Petr ’71, Jeff Siford ’87, and Dom Staiti ’90 represented the Friars well and brought home the championship.

Class of 1974 Congratulations to Mike Lato, who became a grandfather for the first time on January 27th. Clifton McGee could be a third generation Friar.

Class of 1978 Chris Baldwin was inducted into the Maryland Drum and Bugle Corps Hall of Fame on March 26th. Chris marched with the Yankee Rebels Sr. Drum and Bugle Corps while attending Curley and marched and instructed the Appaloosa color guard rifle line from 1975-1980. Appaloosa won the NJA Championship in 1980. He also toured the country as a member of the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 1979.

Class of 1984 Congratulations to Mike Healy for being named Mid Atlantic Section PGA Professional of the Year. This is the highest honor paid to a professional by the MAPGA. Mike is currently the PGA Golf Professional at The Country Club of Maryland.

Mike Pack and wife, Mary, are happy to announce the birth of their first grandchild, Charlie James. He was born on February 5, 2022 to Mike’s daughter, Niki, and her husband, Matt.

Mike Libber, owner of Elite Tournaments, was recently named a FIFA Match Agent.

His involvement with and promotion of the game of soccer has moved to the international level. Mike is involved with the Baltimore/Washington bids for FIFA World Cup 2026.

After graduating from Curley, Ben Trently attended CCBC and eventually transferred to Stevenson University where he majored in Business Administration. After participating in a 24-hour gaming charity to raise funds for his local children’s hospital, he decided to pursue a career helping nonprofits. He’s worked with the Hopkins Children’s Center, the American Diabetes Association, and the Maryland Science Center under Mark Potter ’80. Ben is currently the Development Director at the Franciscan Center of Baltimore.

Class of 2002 Scott Martin and his wife, Jackie, would like to announce their son Asa Thomas to the Curley family. Asa was born in August 2021.

Class of 2007 Congratulations to Donald Kus III. He was recently named Teacher of the Year for Sacred Heart School in Glyndon. Don is the Physical Education teacher for the entire school. The principal at Sacred Heart had nothing but great things to say about Don, including, “He is a great role model for our students and definitely a credit to Archbishop Curley. He finds ways to bring the school community together with fun activities and is a team player among the faculty and staff.”

Class of 2015 Matthew Wolfe recently graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT).

Class of 2016 & 2020 This spring alums, Matt Selba ’16 and Ian Hoffman ’20 crossed paths at a collegiate Track and Field event. Matt coaches throws at St. Francis University while Ian competes in multiple events for UMBC.

Class of 2018 On January 7th, Noah Carter graduated with his class to become a Baltimore City Police Officer.

Josh Laubach finished his sophomore season at Alderson Broaddus University with a 19-3 record and the honor of becoming the school’s first NCAA All-American wrestler.

Robbie Commodari will be attending Texas Tech in the fall to earn his M.S. in Atmospheric Science.

Class of 2020 Chris Knorr had a breakout season in the pool for Salisbury University. This winter saw Chris break multiple personal records as well as set the Salisbury University school record for the 200m Butterfly. He ended the season with the most team points through individuals and relays during meets and the Metropolitan Championships.
