FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumni and Friends of Curley: In recent months we have been through a series of challenging experiences. The coronavirus pandemic has touched everyone, and we have joined in prayer for those who have died, who have lost loved ones, who have been ill, and who are out of work. Our country has also experienced a renewed search for social justice, and how it must apply to everyone without the boundaries prejudice can easily erect. Difficult moments often lead to transformative change and genuine wisdom, and we hope and pray that will be the result. In the midst of all this I have tried to remember: God has not abandoned us; we are blessed to have many ways to stay in touch; and we know that our Curley Family spirit will survive.

It is not unusual to make some changes as an issue of CURLEY gets put together. This issue is probably the most re-worked of all, for so many things were cancelled or changed since it was designed in early March. So we have decided that this issue should capture the Curley response to the pandemic, a most unique moment in modern history. The picture on the cover reminds that the building is closed, but it stands in witness to its mission, and ready to have students re-enter as soon as that is possible. Several articles seek to describe the Curley response to various situations and events. Many of the photos are unique in capturing the alternative way of celebrating a school tradition.

We certainly salute our faculty, students and families for their transition to on-line learning. Over a weekend we went from being in class to having class go into each home. As the initial two-week close became three months in this mode, all have learned a great deal about what works and what doesn’t.

Before the end of the school year groups began developing the best practices for health and safety as well as for effective learning and maintaining school spirit. Schools always use the summer to prepare for the new school year, but this year it has meant preparing for a fully open school, a continuation of on-line learning, or a hybrid of the two. Curley’s 60th opening may be as unique as its first in 1961.

Underlying all this is the goal to deliver to the students the Curley Family tradition, the development of brotherhood, and doing all this within a context of faith. I hope this issue of CURLEY helps share this effort with our readers. Finally, I would be remiss not to mention the continued support of our Curley benefactors, and what a blessing such stable support is during challenging times. We hope and pray we can soon return to the ‘normal’ excitement of a school year, and the many events that bring us together.

CURLEY | CURRENTS RIGHT TO LIFE MARCH ON WASHINGTON Very early on the Friday morning of January 24th, 38 Curley students and their chaperones climbed on buses to make the annual trip to witness to the sanctity of human life at the Right to Life March. The Mass and rally took place in the Capitol One Arena. After a quick lunch, the March began to the Supreme Court.

COUNTDOWN TO COMMENCEMENT This relatively new tradition honors the senior class on the 100th day to graduation. The Class of 2020 enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and dinner with their parents in the gym and moved to the Suehle Auditorium for a brief program.

Senior Alex Petr delivered the “Countdown Address,” which was followed by a video presentation in which every senior thanked his parents.

DEMARCO, FORTE AND HOFFMAN RETIRE Three cornerstones of the Curley faculty retired in June: Michael DeMarco, Philip Forte and Gene Hoffman.

As the face of biology at Curley, Mr. Michael DeMarco retires after 45 years as a science instructor in Room 103.

His contributions to Curley have spanned the gamut from teacher to lacrosse coach to department chair to chessmaster.

He was counsel to twelve principals and three presidents.

Students and faculty honored him as Teacher of the Year in 2005 and 2019.

Mr. Philip Forte began his teaching career at Cardinal Gibbons High School on the westside of town. After 32 years of service as teacher, assistant principal and principal, he came to Curley when Gibbons closed. On the eastside of town, he taught math and theology to Curley students for 10 years.

Forte was always a presence at concerts, plays, Greccio services and the Curley Gala.

“I would coach until I’m 100 if I could,” Mr. Gene Hoffman ’69 said after 44 years leading the Friars’ running program. Gene Hoffman returned to his alma mater to teach health, physical education and math and coach cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field. His cross country and track squads have racked up 19 championships, including one in the MSA, which also boasted top teams from Baltimore City public schools competing against their private school counterparts. Hoffman received the Teacher of the Year award in 1993. He was named Coach of the Year twice for cross country and twice for track & field. Hoffman is pictured with his son, Ian ’20.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND FACULTY SERVICE AWARDS During Catholic Schools Week in January, the Barry Brownlee Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Mr. Jon Pressimone. Pressimone has been a theology instructor at Curley for five years. Outside the classroom he moderates the Ultimate Frisbee Club, co-moderates the Student Government and leads the Praise Band for worship services.

In this year of quarantine and distance learning, we thank all of the faculty and staff who are overcoming unusual challenges to fulfill the mission of Curley and build great Curley men.

Summer Renovation Projects Underway The pointing and caulking of the exterior south wall of the academic building has begun, financed in part by a grant from the Knott Foundation and by an aging school grant from the State of Maryland.

CURLEY | CURRENTS DISTINCTIVE SCHOLARS 2020 The Archdiocese of Baltimore Distinctive Scholars Convocation recognizes and affirms the academic talents and accomplishments of students in the Catholic secondary schools of the Archdiocese. This event would have been held on Thursday, April 23rd. We congratulate the three seniors representing Archbishop Curley High School: Scott Giampa, Hunter Luers and Yazan Sawalhi.

ST. BONAVENTURE SCHOLARS PRESENT CAPSTONE PROJECTS The St. Bonaventure Scholars Program, a subset of the Honors Pathway, challenges top students with Honors or AP-level courses, Dual Enrollment classes, college visits, guest speakers, field trips, and a senior year Capstone Project (academic research paper or 40-hour internship). In the second semester of their final year, the Senior Scholars present their Capstone projects to an audience of faculty, parents and other Scholars.

CURLEY | CURRENTS CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK AND HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION DAY Monday, January 27, 2020 started with Mass in the Suehle Auditorium to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Fr. Mark Bialek ’97, pastor of St. John’s Parish in Westminster, was the principal celebrant and homilist. After Mass, new members of three honor societies were inducted; their parents were invited to attend.

MOTHER-SON DINNER DANCE The annual Mother-Son Dinner and Dance, sponsored by the Parents Guild, was held on March 7th. Over 320 mothers and sons enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing and quality time together.

ALL THAT CURLEY JAZZ

Membership in The Lawrence Cardinal Shehan Chapter of the National Honor Society is based on scholarship, service, leadership and character and is determined by a panel of faculty members.

Mu Alpha Theta, the national high school mathematics honor society, requires students to have completed Algebra 2, be enrolled in an advanced math course, carry a B+ average in math and be recommended by his math teacher.

To be a member of the Spanish Honor Society, a student must take 4 years of Spanish with an A average plus a B average in all other courses.

One of the special events that highlights the musical prowess of Curley musicians is “All That Curley Jazz.” Produced by Dave Makowiecki ’93 and coordinated this year by Frank and Lisa Giampa, “All That Curley Jazz” provided good music and good food catered by Bill’s Seafood.

The Jazz Lab was the first Curley ensemble to take the stage. This group provides younger students with the opportunity to work together as a unit and gain experience.

This year’s guest band was “Junkyard Saints” who played between sets of the Curley bands.

The Jazz Ensemble lived up to all expectations with an energetic set and grateful applause from the audience. This was the 11th appearance of the Jazz Ensemble for the school year, which included concerts at feeder schools and a visit to the Towson University Jazz Festival. The Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Lab are directed by Mr. Christopher Campbell.

The Alumni Band brought this year’s “All That Curley Jazz” to a swinging conclusion. Thanks to all the alums who come back for a great band reunion and performance. Thanks to Dave Makowiecki who gathered the alumni for rehearsals and produced the event.

BLACKFRIARS’ THEATRE PRODUCTION OF “LES MISERABLES” Blackfriars’ Theatre undertook a demanding project for the spring musical.

Les Miserables: School Edition, the classic story of redemption, compassion, and love set in nineteenth century France, is a challenge because all of the lines are sung. The entire cast did an amazing job. The principals, Phil Lohrfink as Valjean and James Sandoval as Javert, were superb. It was entertaining and well-executed, consistent with the best of Blackfriars’ Theatre.

A Call to Action Mr. Ed Flaherty visits with some Curley students who benefitted from the Flaherty Family Foundation.

T

his is the story of two phone calls. The second was received by Fr. Donald at Archbishop Curley High School in 2017, when he was contacted by the Flaherty Family Foundation.

They decided to expand their philanthropic focus beyond Minnesota where they sponsored students in Catholic secondary schools. Following an initial meeting with school administrators, FFF interviewed qualified candidates, offered scholarships, and started a lasting relationship with Curley. To date, the Foundation sponsors 24 students, providing more than $100,000 in scholarship opportunities, and is welcoming five more students next year.

The first of the phone calls was received on Christmas Eve some years ago by Ed Flaherty, then a small business owner in the upper Midwest struggling to find his way. Sr. Roseanne Fox, whose brother, a priest, taught Flaherty during high school, was in immediate need of donations for her ministry. “How much do you need, Sister?” He verbally committed to the $1000 request without an idea of how he could make it work. “I only had $1012 in my account at the time, but how could I lie to a nun?” he says remembering the event. Overcoming his second thoughts he handed over the gift. “In a year’s time, my business was doing better, and I didn’t miss the $1000 a year later,” he admits. “I had enough confidence that I was going to make it.” This call sparked a lifetime commitment to philanthropy.

Ed Flaherty has no connection to Archbishop Curley High School. His professional success occurred in Minnesota, where among other ventures the entrepreneur launched Rapid Oil Change, which he sold years later. “I was 41 years old and had never been around money before,” he says. Since then, he’s lived a comfortable life, but didn’t want that to define him. “My Dad was an example to me,” he offers.

“One dollar went into the envelope every week on a $70-a-week income.” He also recalls how his

parents made sacrifices to send their children to Catholic school. The return on this investment for Ed was a full-scholarship to play football at the University of Wyoming and an MBA from George Washington University.

Mr. Flaherty also emphasizes, “In our partner schools, we don’t have a legacy or a family connection. We believe in Catholic education, and the values system taught in these schools.” The Foundation’s investment in our Curley Men demonstrates confidence in their

a winner; yet his legacy is in the success of his scholarship recipients, which now total 450 in 32 high schools. Each year his foundation provides more than $2 million in scholarships to students who demonstrate academic promise as well as financial need. “I don’t forget that I used to be there myself,” Flaherty states about his own upbringing.

The Foundation takes a personal approach with their recipients and provides support and yearround programming including summer enrichment.

Scholarship dollars follow students for four years as long as they continue to meet academic and financial requirements. The Flaherty Foundation is also working with a number of colleges to provide scholarship opportunities at the next level.

Ed Flaherty’s philanthropy is improving lives. “I see the sacrifices in our scholars’ families as parents hope that their kids will do better than they have done,” he notes. “Now I can’t think of a better way

Mr. Flaherty hopes that his involvement in Curley encourages others within that community to give as well. With that sense of mission also comes a sense of urgency. “If you wait for others to do it, then it will be too late,” he states.

Curley is blessed to have received that phone call from the Flaherty Family Foundation three years ago. The world is blessed that Ed Flaherty answered his phone call decades before.

ur plan was to celebrate the silver anniversary of the Curley Gala on Palm Sunday Weekend, but things changed. In the midst of the pandemic, Gala XXV was initially postponed until June 6th, but the ongoing restrictions ultimately forced a transition from an in-person dinner auction to a virtual event. Not wanting to lose the chance to celebrate that anniversary together, Curley decided to plan Gala XXV for next spring, and to call this year’s virtual auction Gala 24½: The Home Edition.

for the success of Gala 24½. Then Jonathan Melnick, who has volunteered his professional auctioneer services for every Curley Gala, took over and introduced the first three verbal auction gifts. There was a palpable energy in the room as bids appeared on the TV screen. Curley families gathered at home for “Gala-viewing parties” and shared photos of their fun. We thank the technical crew – Jon Gerstmyer ’02, Randy Noppinger ’14, Pablo Sainz ’94, and Patty White – whose talents made the production possible.

Many aspects of the Gala remained the same this year. Generous families hosted gift-gathering parties that allowed Curley to collect auction items.

Barb Suehle, who provides constant support for this event, was busy managing gift intake and other essential event preparations. Mary White and Karen Hundertmark made phone calls soliciting donations from local businesses. Darlene Cuomo and Charlotte Rogers packaged items into decorative gift baskets for display. Kathy Wandishin logged Gala ticket orders – many of which were later generously converted to donations to the school. The talented decorating committee planned a theme and prepared decorations, all of which are in storage and ready for next year!

The event also featured the drawing of the winning ticket in the Gala Jeep Raffle sponsored by Don White’s Timonium Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Fr. Donald and Mr. Melnick asked supporters to consider making a

Bidding on items began on June 3rd and started at a fever pitch. More than 500 bidders participated, many generously overspending on available items. Outbid notices were sent via text message. It was clear that the competitive juices were flowing as bids ticked higher and higher.

Not wanting to lose the feel of the traditional event, Curley decided to live stream a Gala program on June 6th. It began at 6 p.m. with Mass followed by a video of Curley trivia and Gala sponsors until 7 p.m.

Jeremy Joseph and Barry Stitz opened the show with a welcome to the viewers and a tag-team explanation of how the auction would unfold. Fr. Donald said a prayer

direct donation to Curley and the response yielded $19,000 in support. Four student testimonial videos were incorporated so that our donors could hear the appreciation from our Curley Men. All told, the transition to a virtual Gala in this unique time was a success. The Gala and the Gala Raffle combined to raise more than $225,000 for the school.

The money raised is part of the school’s operating budget, and lowers the tuition rate for our families.

To The Virus Fr. Donald Grzymski, OFM Conv ’70

N

ew Images and New Vocabulary: An empty parking lot, quiet corridors, unused playing fields—these images are surreal for a school, but part of an international experience in the spring of 2020. When the format of the Summer 2020 issue of CURLEY was being planned there was space to cover all sorts of events. Once COVID-19, coronavirus and pandemic became part of our daily vocabulary that changed. Events were cancelled, or postponed, or became virtual. It seems appropriate to record the school’s response to this unique period in history, to assure posterity there is a record of one school’s response.

“Schools will be closed for 2 weeks.” March 16 was the first day schools were closed in Maryland, and Curley’s first day of on-line education. For several years every Curley student has had an iPad, and both faculty and students have become accustomed to using technology in class, for assignments, for communication, and even for testing. That familiarity with technology, and its availability, assured a smoother start than was the case for many schools and jurisdictions. During that first two-week period of closure the memos from the State and the Archdiocese were rolling in daily, often with revisions on a daily basis as well. The school closure, in fact, ran for the remainder of this academic year. It is perhaps best we didn’t know how long this closure was actually going to last. Looking back, two weeks was a quaint first step.

“We will have a Zoom meeting.” Many individuals had never used Zoom or other meeting apps before, but that certainly changed. From teachers with a particular class, to administrators with others from their building and beyond, the Zoom meeting became a regular part of life. Suddenly we were seeing into homes and offices, and new protocols were being established. On-line meetings are not going to go away.

We will do it in a “virtual way.” What does one do when people can’t gather, but they want to celebrate important days and events? The style quickly became “virtual” events, events on-line, and live-streaming. This included this year’s Cornerstone Day celebration, virtual school tours for prospective Curley students who would otherwise spend a day attending classes, an orientation for the Class of 2024, an on-line auction and related events for what was dubbed Curley Gala 24½, and various salutes to the graduating Class of 2020.

Some events fully cancelled, others postponed. There were a number of events that were completely cancelled as it became clear social-distancing and the limited-size of crowds made certain events impossible to hold. Among those things cancelled: 90% of the spring sports seasons, the Band Trip, Senior Service Week, the sophomore and senior retreats, Gala gift-gathering parties, Career Day, live Stations of the Cross, the Junior and Senior proms, spring concerts, and the

On-line teaching in a virtual classroom. Teachers found a variety of methods to instruct and interact with their classes, and their suggestions to one another during these first weeks also helped learning move forward. From the start it was clear no one could re-capture all of this lost time, students had to keep advancing, and, practically, everyone had time to invest in this enterprise. There is a realization that not everyone can learn as easily in this format, and not everyone’s home wi-fi can handle the load.

Teachers agree that, if they ever have to do this again, they have learned important lessons, they know what works best, and the presence of technology in education is not going to disappear.

Before we went to press, there was no certainty on summer camps and summer enrichment programs.

And now… Even as this magazine goes to press there are uncertainties, and restrictions remain in place. Looking to the future, Curley has formed its own Task Force of some 30 members to lay out plans for what may come in the school year, or beyond. There are three work groups: Academic/Instructional, Facilities/Logistics, and Catholic Identity/Communication/Engagement, and each has been working with a tight time-table. These groups are also using the expertise and suggestions of the CDC, other local, state and federal government agencies, the Archdiocese of Baltimore, and best practices of other institutions to form the most viable Curley plan.

On one of the days seniors came to pick up their yearbooks and clean out their lockers, they were greeted with signs of congratulations. They had learned to wear their masks and practice social distancing.

As a school, and as the Curley Family, we have gotten through a very unique moment in world history, we’ve learned new ways of doing things, we have been creative, and we have been humbled by the continued support of the Curley Family.

It is quite clear that, if needed, we will use all the educational tools available, but in a more synchronous way than they were used for the fourth quarter of the school year. With God’s help may we remain adaptable, may health be preserved, and may our institutions thrive once again. A new school year will open, whether in the traditional way, on-line, or in a hybrid form, because life goes on. Wear your mask.

Wash your hands. Stay safe. And say your prayers.

Brotherhood Br. Emmanuel Wenke, OFM Conv.

I

This is the brotherhood that makes Curley what it is - a reason for celebration on the one hand, but also a solemn responsibility on the other. Our world, our nation, our city, our homes, and our hearts desperately need us to be committed to spreading the light of this God-given brotherhood that goes beyond natural or circumstantial bonds and associations.

began my teaching career at Curley in August of 2017. I will be honest and admit that the first month or so of teaching is just a blur of exhaustion in my memory. I could not have imagined how draining it would be to try to keep up with dozens of teenage boys for hours each day: planning, preparing, presenting, problem solving, grading, disciplining. I felt like I was doing more in a week than I did in three weeks in any previous work or study I had done.

Tough as it was, I loved each of the guys I was charged with teaching even the ones who made a habit of trying my patience at seemingly every turn. Mr. Jamie Long ’98, the longest serving Theology teacher at the time, would often encourage me not to be harsh with myself about my daily struggle to keep up with everything.

At the end of the day, he would tell me “You made it. Now go home and nap like a champ!” And I did.

In the nearly three years since those rather frantic first months, I have grown profoundly in my appreciation for what

Curley is and does. As our Admissions Director, Mr. Nick Brownlee, so often points out, we truly do get to be home away from home for our young men for four of the most critical years of their lives. What happens here can and does have a lasting impact on so many young men, and by extension, on their families and the wider community.

It is a wonderful opportunity and a great responsibility.

To call someone a brother, we mean that they are our sibling, that we share common parentage. In our Franciscan tradition, believing with all our hearts that God is the caring Father of all that exists, that Christ is our brother, and that we are connected with great followers of Jesus like St. Francis through the gift of faith, brotherhood at Curley truly does go deeper and becomes something unique.

Ask just about anyone acquainted with Curley what the school’s core message is, and “Brotherhood” will be the first thing you hear. Everyone knows it, and everything from our school prayers to our advertising emphasizes it. But what makes this sense of brotherhood here unique? There are many all-boys schools in the area. Many of them also raise a sense of fraternity and camaraderie as an ideal. How is Curley different?

Every school has its close knit sports teams, clubs, and music ensembles.

Every school has some sense of pride in its identity and a sense of camaraderie and interconnectedness. But here, in the spirit of St. Francis, we are called and challenged to look at each person we encounter - even those we don’t particularly like - as a child of God, and someone worthy of our care and concern. This brotherhood is a gift from God. It flows from our faith, from our shared hope, from our commitment to generous love.

This is the Curley Brotherhood that I have come to know and love over these years, constantly supporting me and challenging me to grow in my faith, in hope, and in charity for all around me.

I came here with the title “Brother” before my name, and I will be forever grateful that Curley has helped me to understand and live that at a deeper level than I could have imagined.

I pray that everyone who reads this reflection can rise to this holy challenge of brotherhood, of family, in every part of their lives. It may have been some time since we put much effort into living our faith and bringing this sense of brotherhood into our homes, workplaces, and everywhere we find ourselves -but it is never too late to renew and reground ourselves in these values we hold dear! May God bless you and give you peace! Go Friars!

“I Love A Good Story” - Deion Broxton ’11

P

aging through the 2011 edition of The Cord yearbook you will find a section dedicated to the graduating class. Alongside their senior portraits, students were asked to share their future goals. While answers varied, many simply stated, “graduate from college and get a good job” or “be successful in life.” However, Deion Broxton’s response was much more succinct. His ambition was a career in journalism or broadcasting. Nine years later, the Curley grad is fulfilling his dream as a news reporter for KTVM, an NBC affiliate in Butte, Montana.

Broxton knew early on in high school of his aspirations to be on television, preferably as a sports reporter.

His love for sports well exceeded his participation on Curley’s football and track squads. “I was so into following the various teams, professional athletes, and their statistics. It’s all I ever wanted to talk about,” he recalls. “Every day during lunch we would watch ESPN on the TV’s in the Student Dining Room,” Broxton says. His passion for “talking sports” didn’t go unnoticed by his friends who often joked that they would someday be watching their classmate anchor a Sports Center telecast.

After Curley, Broxton attended York College for two years before transferring to Towson University. “I was ready to get more serious about my academics and pursuing a career in sports broadcasting,” he shares.

“I thought I would have more resources at home.”

Little did he know the move back to Baltimore and a course he was taking on news reporting would slightly alter his career path. “One of my class assignments was to cover the protests resulting from the death of Freddie Gray,” shared the mass communications major. Amazed at the media storm he witnessed at the scene, including the numerous reporters, trucks, cameras, and lights, Broxton realized that he wanted to report the news.

His last semester of college offered an internship with WBAL TV. In addition to giving Broxton his first glimpse of what happens in a news room on a daily basis, he also was able to shadow reporters on assignment.

Soon after his graduation from Towson, he landed his first job in the industry as an assignment editor at local station ABC Channel 2 where he was tasked with “pitching” stories to reporters. Broxton would soon move on to another local news outlet, WJZ TV Channel 13, and would serve as a web producer.

Among his responsibilities were gathering information and posting it to the station’s website, Twitter, and Facebook pages.

Broxton’s first job as a television news reporter came in the Summer of 2018 when he was hired

by KTVM, an affiliate of NBC located in Butte, Montana. This opportunity was the result of over two years of preparation and acting on the feedback received from many of the people with whom he had worked. “I knew I wanted to be a reporter and there were things I needed to do to put myself in a better position to get a job,” he reflects. For starters, Broxton hired a speech pathologist to help him lose his “Baltimore” accent, thus making him more marketable in other parts of the country. He continued to work on his craft by regularly shadowing reporters in the field and also gained hands-on experience working with a photographer. Broxton was now ready to post on YouTube a “demo” reel of fake scenes/ stories he had produced. This resulted in a few job offers including one from his current employer.

The 27-year old very much enjoys his job as a news reporter and says the best part is producing emotional stories that hit home with people. Working in a small market with a smaller staff has its perks. “I am considered a general assignment reporter so I get to cover everything. Sometimes this means breaking news but I also have the opportunity to do human interest stories.” He adds, “I love a good story, talking to ‘real’ people, and bringing happiness into people’s lives through the news.”

Recently Broxton was able to put a smile on many faces around the world through what he calls a “blooper” that was an instant hit on social media. The reporter was filming a teaser for a story at Yellowstone National Park when a bison approached and got too close for comfort. His reaction to the uncomfortable situation was caught on tape and he subsequently tweeted it out. “We all have moments on camera that don’t go as expected. I was surprised that it received so much attention,” he says referring to the Twitter clip that had well over four million views. His encounter drew coverage from numerous news outlets including ESPN, The Huffington Post, The Today Show, and the Baltimore Sun. “It was fun while it lasted,” he says with a laugh.

When asked about his future goals, Broxton quickly responds. “I want to be the best story teller I can be.” He adds, “I just want to be happy and be compensated well.” The reporter knows that in his line of work the latter often requires relocating and finding work in a larger market, something he has shown he is willing to do. This summer he will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to work for KGAN-CBS. Broxton eagerly awaits his next stop and expects the transition to be easier than his move from Baltimore to Montana.

“My original plan was to stay close to home, but that didn’t happen,” he explains. “Moving here made me appreciate the different cultures, and I am looking forward to a new experience.”

Twin Pages

id the title spark your curiosity? Twin brothers in Curley’s senior class received an “up close and personal” view of the legislative process when they served as pages. David and Joseph Nakasone applied last year and were accepted into two different page programs.

Before telling that story, we should add that the entire Curley experience has been somewhat unique for these brothers. David and Joseph were accepted to Curley in the spring of 2016, and would have been joining their brother Daniel, a member of the Class of 2017, at the school. Their father’s military assignment changed that plan, and they completed their first two years of high school in Virginia. When their family returned to the Baltimore area in 2018, Joseph and David transferred into Curley, and very rapidly became active members of the Class of 2020 and in a variety of school activities.

David applied to the Maryland Legislature Page Program. All high school seniors who are residents of the state of Maryland, age 16 or over, are eligible to apply.

Student pages work for two non-consecutive weeks at either the House of Delegates or the Senate in Annapolis. It is strongly encouraged that potential pages be enthusiastic about government, politics, law, or community service.

David commuted twenty-five minutes to Annapolis for the week of February 10-14 and was a page in the House of Delegates. He worked on the floor during full sessions and assisted the delegates by making copies, getting water or coffee, and delivering documents. He was also able to observe hearings by various committees.

sponsored by a senator, they must be high school juniors, at least sixteen years old, and attend school. Academic standing is one of the most important criteria used in the final selection of pages. Pages attend classes in the early morning at the United States Senate Page School, a program fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Interested students should contact their senator’s office for more information on applying to be a Senate Page.

Joseph’s experience lasted from July 8 - August 2, 2019. On duty from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Joseph attended to the needs of the senators to whom he was assigned.

This involved preparing the senators’ desks when they needed to speak, running messages among the various buildings, and looking for specific senators when it was time to vote. Other duties include carrying bills and amendments to the desk.

He met numerous senators including Cardin, King, Isakson and Sasse and became acquainted with pages from all across the country.

The Nakasone twins had similar, yet different experiences. Joseph said of his days as a page: “Being a page for the summer was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences that I could have ever hoped for. I was able to be at the forefront of American politics, and experience what the true day-to-day life in the government was like. The job taught me the importance of both discipline and patience, and I highly recommend it to any students interested in becoming civically active.” Joseph will attend the University of Virginia in the fall.

David, whose second week was eliminated due to the pandemic, reflected: “While I didn’t get to experience the second week, I thoroughly enjoyed my time working for the State Legislature. I was able to get a hands-on experience with lawmaking and learned a lot.” David has received an appointment to West Point, where he plans to study International Relations and minor in Counter Terrorism.

CORNERSTONE 0 DAY 2020

n April 17, 1962, Archbishop Lawrence Shehan blessed the cornerstone of Curley. 58 years later, we honor people who are “cornerstones” of Curley and thank all alumni, students, parents, friends of Curley and faculty and former faculty for their support of the Curley mission. This year Covid-19 forced a virtual celebration. Students nominated persons who “make Curley a special place.” The Curley family made gifts honoring specific persons. Alumni, students, parents and friends showed their pride in the school by sending in or posting photos of themselves in Curley gear. (See page 19.)

The Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Foundation has been a force for good in the greater Baltimore community since 1977. In particular, Curley has been the grateful recipient of grants on a number of occasions, but particularly in conjunction with its capital campaigns and for enhanced technology on the campus. Most recently the foundation has awarded the school a $100,000 grant for capital improvements including preparatory work for the air conditioning of the academic building.

Butch and Donna Rosenthal are familiar faces on the Curley campus.

Butch is a ’84 graduate, their son Matthew graduated in 2011, and they have offered countless hours of volunteer work for Blackfriars Theatre, volunteering in the Campus Store, and with decorations and set-up for the Curley Gala. They have been ready to help on so many occasions.

Mr. DeMarco joined the Curley faculty in 1975, and when he retires this year he will hold the record as longest serving member of Curley’s faculty or staff, with 45 years of service. Throughout most of those years Mr. DeMarco has taught biology and other science courses in Room 103, and has served at various times as Science Department Chairperson.

He has also coached lacrosse, guided the Biology and Chess Clubs, and has served on a variety of faculty committees. Mr. DeMarco was honored as Curley’s Teacher of the Year in both 2005 and 2019, and was a runner up for Archdiocesan Teacher of the Year in 2019.

Timothy ’69 & Denise Weglicki Scholarship Donors For almost 30 years Timothy Weglicki, a member of the Class of 1969, and his wife Denise, have been generous contributors to Curley. In 2004 they established the Theodore & Bridget Weglicki Memorial Scholarship, which has continued to grow in value. However, they have also supported each of Curley’s capital campaigns, the annual Alumni Golf Tournament, the Gala with a number of premium auction items, the Annual Fund and the St. Joseph Fund.

Steven Wolf ’78 Unsung Alumnus Steve Wolf is a graduate of the Class of 1978, and is seen on campus for morning and evening meetings, taking in sporting events, or with his wife Margaret supporting the Curley Gala. Steve served on the Alumni Board and as Alumni Association President from 2008-2010. Steve is also in his 7th year on the Curley Board, having spent two years as Chair of the Board, and a number of years as chair of the Board’s Facilities Committee. Steve also serves on the Committee for the current Capital Campaign, Renewing Our Future. A businessman, Steve is a corporate sponsor of Curley athletics, and has helped many individual fund-raising efforts over the years. This gentleman doesn’t officially work for Curley, but he has helped his alma mater in so many different ways.

Class of 2009 Eric Franklin has been named a cornerbacks coach at the University of Pennsylvania. A 2012 graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Franklin was a four-year letter winner for the Terrapins football team. He coached at Curley (2013-15), Wagner, Johns Hopkins and most recently at Washington and Lee.

Class of 1966 Rick Danaher and his wife Darlene (TCHS ’67) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Flag Day, June 14, 2020.

Class of 1970 Dave Danaher became a grandfather for the first time. His granddaughter is Luna Josephine Danaher.

Class of 2014 Colin (CJ) Haslup recently completed his graduate degree in architecture at the University of Maryland-CP. CJ earned his undergraduate degree from Temple University.

Class of 1985 Richard Przybylski was recently honored as the Color Corpsman of the Year by the Maryland District of the Knights of Columbus. He is pictured with Fr. Donald Grzymski, OFM Conv. ’70, Curley’s president, at the presentation. Fr. Donald serves as chaplain for the Maryland District.

Class of 1987 Darrin Dunn and his wife Jennifer celebrated 25 years of marriage on Nov. 4, 2019. They reside in Hanover PA with their three children Brayden, Tyler and Allie.

Class of 1997 Ken Huether recently was promoted to IT Director at Stevenson University. Ken is married to Alisha and has two daughters, Sophia and Ava.

Class of 2016 Trevor Brown, a senior at Kenyon College (OH), was named to the 2020 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society.

His senior season brought career-bests with 35 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks. He also recorded an interception and fumble recovery.

John and Melissa D’Adamo were featured in an article in the February, 2020 Catholic Review, focusing on how their Catholic faith brought them together.

Angelo Petrucci won the Sport Broadcaster of the Year Award at the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University (NC). He called numerous games on the Big South Network.

James Duffy, a junior at Christopher-Newport University (VA), was awarded Student Employee of the Year in the University’s Office of Sustainability.

Delondrae Carter was awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship to continue his education.

Delondrae is currently attending Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ studying physics and astronomy. His stated career goal is a Ph.D. in Theoretical Astrophysics.

He explains: “I hope to conduct research related to dark energy in a national lab and to inspire an astrophysical fascination in the next generation through science communication.”

Ryan Fisher is a senior at Clemson University (SC) studying environmental engineering with a minor in sustainability.

Ryan was recently selected to intern with the U. S. Department of Energy at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina as an Engineer / Scientist (Environmental) Intern. The Savannah River Site today treats and processes waste, works in environmental cleanup and remediation, processes tritium, and protects nuclear material. Ryan will be working in the environmental monitoring department assessing radiological impacts to the environment and public from DOE operations through liquid and air pathways.

Class of 2018 Robbie Commodari, was recently awarded the Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is dedicated to science, service and stewardship. In addition to a monetary award, he receives opportunities to intern at NOAA. Robbie just completed his second year at Millersville University (PA).

Class of 2020 Philip Lohrfink recently received his Eagle Scout Award, one of twelve members of the Class of 2020 to receive the prestigious honor. Philip will be attending Le Moyne College (NY) in the fall.

Archbishop Gregory Hartmayer, OFM Conv. was installed as the new Archbishop of Atlanta on May 6th. Archbishop Hartmayer was assigned to Curley in 1974-75 and again from 1979-88, serving as principal from 1985-88. He became Bishop of Savannah in 2011.

+JAMIE LONG ’98 (1980-2020) On January 16, 2020, Jamie Long passed away after a long struggle with brain cancer.

Having earned degrees from LaSalle University and Loyola University Maryland, he shared his knowledge and insights with the students of Curley for 14 years as a theology instructor and later as chair of the theology department. He is survived by his wife Amanda and their children, Jude and Cora.

CURLEY TRAINER ENTERS BLAST HALL OF FAME On February 29th, Curley’s athletic trainer, Marty McGinty, was inducted into the Baltimore Blast Soccer Hall of Fame. Marty was the Blast trainer from 1989-2000 and is the only non-player, besides legendary coach Kenny Cooper, to receive the honor.

Marty received his B.S. in Athletic Training from Salisbury University and a M.A. in Education Guidance and Counseling from Loyola University. He initially worked at the Union Memorial Sports Medicine Center before taking the job with the Blast. He has been Curley’s trainer since 2000, a job he really loves. “Curley is the perfect place for me. I could laugh and cry everyday helping our kids. I would not trade it for the world. The Franciscan Friars have become a special part of my life. My heart will always be warm here at Curley.”

New School Records Set Caleb Johnson ’20 set the school record for most points scored in a basketball career: 1,123 points.

Ian Hoffman ’20 set the school record for the javelin throw at 145 feet.

Joseph Baranoski ’23, Reed Barra ’20, Chris Knorr ’20, Nick Petrick ’23 set the school swimming record for the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:50.47).

Congratulations to Coach Hopkins and the Friars basketball squad on their 64-54 victory over St. John’s Catholic Prep in the championship game held at Harford Community College. Senior Caleb Johnson, the school’s all-time leading scorer, led the way with 19 points. Dinari Boykin and Josh Knapp also finished in double digits. The team dominated conference play with a 12-2 record and finished 23-6 overall.
