Peter Saville, The Factory, 1978

Early LIfe Peter Saville was born in Manchester, England in 1956. He is most famously known for his album cover artwork at his time with Factory Records.

He created artwork for both Joy Division and OMD, as well as having many other accomplishments Saville graduated from Manchester Polytech, with his first poster for the Factory club in 1978

In his career and the era that he grew up in, the ‘New Typography’ art movement and the pioneers of the time inspired Saville.

New Typography The 1920s New Typography Movement began as advances in the printing press, allowing designers to escape from the traditional typecase designs.

This movement rejected standard typographic symmetry, allowing art and words to lead the eyes in new and pleasing ways

During his time with Factory Records, he became an art director for Dindisc, a Virgin Records Label, created designs for Ultravox, Roxy Music, WHAM! Dior, Suede, Pulp, Gay Dad, Flora Book, Yohji Yamamoto, Peter Gabriel. And even designed for the Magiciens de la Terre Exhibition in Paris.

Eventually, Factory Records did collapse, causing chaos in his designing career and personal life. He moved to LA and became a partner with Pentagram group, created an on-screen identity for Los Angeles Channel One, and collaborated with Nick Knight and David Chipperfield on a gallery for the Natural History Museum.

Eventually, he moved back to London to open the Apartment in Mayfair with the German agency Meire and Meire, consulting for Mandarina Duck. In 2003, he cofounded the SHOWstudio website, and then created an identity for the Design Museum Website with tours and showings.

Peter Saville eventually published a book in 2003, called Designed by Peter Saville, with a corresponding soundtrack by New Order, and exhibition of The Peter Saville Show.

From 1978–93, Peter Saville produced enigmatic artworks that repurposed images from industrial and cultural history. The chaotic ethos of the label provided him with the freedom to do as he wanted.

Saville is known for learning from other artists and incorporating their ideas into his own work. In 1980, Saville designed cover for Joy Division’s last album, Closer. Although there was some controversy over the last album cover, it was legally cleared up before any damage could become permanent.

Afterhis last work for Joy Division, Saville began re-appropriatigng of historic art works that he used and remade into album covers. For example, he used Fantin-Lour’s ‘Roses’ painting and combined it with a color-coded alphabet that became the seminal album cover for New Order’s Power, Corruption, and Lies(1983).

Jan Tschichold was one of the most influential designers at the time of the New Typography movement, and a great inspiration to Peter Saville. He read about his chapter in The Pioneers of Modern Typography, drawing parallels between it and the New Wave that was emerging out of punk.

Saville’s style is instantly recognizable and he quickly set the standard for New Wave design from the beginning of his career, throughout the ’80s and beyond.

He was known for his cool and disciplined use of typography. In 1978, he was commissioned by Factory Records to create a poster, which became one of his more recognizable pieces (“FAC1”).

Since then his career has flourished, and he has created his own design agency known as Peter Saville Associates. He also worked for the Virgin offshoot, DinDisk, and accepted an offer to join Pentagram, which is one of the few multi-disciplinary design agencies/consultancies in the world. He now continues to work on a freelance basis and is known to have done much recent collaboration with the fashion industry.
