FOCUS ON.... Ruby Chase

Ruby Summer Chase, age 10, has been coming to GLP, as many of us have, for her whole life. Ruby is a 5th generation product of GLP. Her great-great grandparents Charles and Maude Wheeler built “Orient” cottage at 152 East Shore in 1923. Her great grandparents on her fatherʼs side met in GLP. At that time her great-grandfather, William Earle Chase, and his family owned Nautilus on East Shore.

Rubyʼs great grandmother, Madelyn Wheeler Chase, and grandfather, Robert Chase, survived the Hurricane of ʼ38 in Nautilus having to retreat to Dr. Williamʼs house on higher ground when the water started to slosh out of the toilet bowl.

Nautilus has since been sold but the Wheeler cottage, “Orient,” remains in the family.

Like many GLP offspring Ruby is an avid fisherman.

(Both she and her sister Macy are ʻOKʼ with being called fishermen). She was often seen

fishing with her dad, sister, brother, cousins, friends and fearless dog, Gibson, in a small green boat around Groton Long Point.

This year Ruby caught a “monster.” She managed to hook, artfully play with and bring the fish to the boat entirely by herself. After Ruby landed the fish she exclaimed, “This is largest fish (striped bass) ever caught by the Chases, Wheelers and everyone before them.” It was caught off Groton Long Point, beware the toes, on Wild Billʼs tube & worm. It was 48” long, weighed 45 lbs. and was estimated to be 17 years old. Like 98% of the fish she caught this summer it was released to seed the ocean for future adventures.

Ruby has exzpressed her thanks to Dave Nickolenko for teaching the Chases to fish and to “Old Slimy” aka Gerry de Labry and Todd Brown for their ever passionate advice.

Speaking of Listening A couple of years ago we introduced a column that dealt with an oral history of Groton Long Point. Residents from many years ago talked about the things they remembered from their days of growing up here on “The Point.”

A collection of these rememberances can be found in the GLP archives. Geneva de Labry has transcribed these spoken stories and we are now able to bring them to you. Because of the popularity of Graham Gavertʼs The Archives column we plan to bring you both Grahamʼs column and Genevaʼs column on a regular basis this summer.

We begin with a repetition of the very first column which will be new to some and familiar to others, and then we will continue on from here with some of the other transcribed stories.

Russell Barber & Fred Clark, III Growing Up as Year-round Residents of GLP in the 1940ʼs and ʻ50ʼs

Fred: My father and mother lived over in the Noank area. My grandfather lived where, as you go North on 215 where they have built some beautiful homes recently, there used to be a big farm up there, and thatʼs where he started.

And then he had a wagon and a donkey, and he used to come down to the Point - especially in the spring - when people would come from Hartford and every other place around here, and heʼd get their suitcases at the train. It used to stop over there by Haley Farm, I understand. The trolley, I

mean not the train. Heʼd put all their gear onto the wagon and deliver them to the few homes that were here at the Point. Then, Bill Wheeler who lived at the gate- before my time, there was a waiting room there - Russell: (Bill Wheeler was my grandfather.) The trolley came through Spicerʼs boatyard in Noank and down from Mystic like the railroad does now, and came past where the Seahorse is now.

The bridge there was all made out of spiles, and it stopped at the grandfatherʼs and people got off or on. And my grandfather delivered the ice, because everybody had an icebox, generally out on the front porch where you could drill a hole through the floor and the melted ice (water) could drip down through. Go ahead.

Fred: So then my parents moved down to Church Street. The family house was straight down by the next street which goes along the water. They lived there for a long, long time. And then they decided, because he liked Groton Long Point, that he should build something down here. Well, the house on 8 Beach Road was built by two friends of his, the Patterson boys from Noank and they were great carpenters. He built that house and at that time there was a building on there. The foundation is still there, part of the house. That was the Casino, if you want to call it, and the post office. And my father put the house up and expanded it and had the two lots, and thatʼs where he started.

Once again we are sad to report to you about the neighbors and friends who have passed away since we last published:

There was just, at that point, the Barber family, the Wheeler family, the McGugan family. The Eric Blomberg McGugan family lived behind Richard H. Brown where I live now (at 22 Beach) in Molly Carr the house which Chum Walker Virginia Cleary finally took over. Thatʼs all we had Lib Colson here as kids growing up. The Robert Cosentino McGugan kids were older than us, Sandy Crouch but it was Russell and I and my Jayson Falcone brother, basically, at that stage of Irene Harvey the game.

Barbara Haviland Russell: We played some with Richard Haviland the Burrowses. They lived up David G. Lattizori above us a couple of houses up Walter Modliszewski from where Gloria Gavert lives Jean Mulligan now. Gloria Gavertʼs house - she Warren Smith wasnʼt around then; the house Robert Starzec was owned by a guy by the name Ellie Steere of Hansley.

Miso-Glazed Fish

Most recipes for miso-glazed fish are for salmon, because fatty fish are well suited for this preparation and salmon is particularly delicious. The famous New York Chef Nobu Matsuhisa is known for his miso-marinated black cod, which he marinates for two to three days. I canʼt imagine finding fish fresh enough to marinate for that long, so in my recipe I marinate the fish for a few hours before broiling and then finishing, if necessary, in the oven. The marinade is based on my interpretation of various ones I have had. Serve with roasted asparagus or bok choy and steamed rice.

1/4 cup mirin 1/4 cup sake 3 tablespoons white or yellow miso paste 1 tablespoon sugar 2 teaspoons dark sesame oil 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 4 salmon, trout, sea bass, Arctic char, mahi mahi or black cod fillets, about 6 ounces each 1. Combine the mirin and sake in the smallest saucepan you have and bring to a boil over high heat. Boil 20 seconds, taking care not to boil off much of the liquid, then turn the heat to low and stir in the miso and the

sugar. Whisk over medium heat without letting the mixture boil until the sugar has dissolved.

Remove from the heat and whisk in the sesame oil. Allow to cool. Transfer to a wide glass or stainless steel bowl or baking dish.

2. Pat the fish fillets dry and brush or rub on both sides with the marinade, then place them in the baking dish and turn them over a few times in the marinade remaining in the dish.

Cover with plastic wrap and marinate for 2 to 3 hours, or for up 12 hours.

3. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Light the broiler or prepare a grill. Line a sheet pan with foil and oil the foil. Tap each fillet against the sides of the bowl or dish so excess marinade will slide off. Place skin side up on the baking sheet if broiling.

4. Place the fish skin side down on the grill, or skin side up under the broiler, about 6 inches from the heat. Broil or grill for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until the surface browns and blackens in spots. If necessary (this will depend on the thickness of the fillets) finish in the oven, for about 5 minutes, until the fish is opaque and can be pulled apart easily with a fork.

Handling the Sweetness

Welcome back! Iʼm looking forward to another summer of sharing with you my passion for wine. And Iʼll be teaming again with cook extraordinaire Katy Reed to provide you with pairing suggestions for Katyʼs delicious recipes.

We start the summer off with Miso-Glazed fish. The wine difficulty with this recipe is how to handle the sweetness that is introduced by the mirin and sugar and the umami brought in by the miso. If you want to go traditional, try a savory, tart Chardonnay from Chablis. If you prefer red, again something that is not too fruity would do the trick such as an earthy Pinot Noir from France.

But thereʼs an ingredient in this recipe which suggests a more exciting, off-the-beaten path pairing. Did you notice the marinade includes sake? How about the famous Japanese “rice wine” as a complement for the fish?

Rice “wine” is a bit of a misnomer as sake is made from a brewing process more akin to beer. Unlike wine where the sugar needed to produce alcohol occurs naturally in grapes, the sugar for sake must first be converted from starch, in this case rice. Sake at roughly 15%

is a touch higher in alcohol than wine.

Thereʼs not much to sake – just rice, water, yeast, and a mold called Koji. The Koji is introduced to break the starch down into sugar. The necessary starch is at the center of the grain of rice and so the rice must be polished to remove the bran and isolate the starch for conversion to sugar. After milling, the rice is rinsed, steeped in water, steamed, and then slowly fermented.

There are two basic types of sake. Futsu-shu is “ordinary” sake, think of it as table wine.

Tokutei meishō-shu is “specialdesignation” sake and is distinguished by the amount of polishing the rice has undergone and the absence of additives. Sake can be served heated, chilled, or at room temperature. The better quality sakes are not served hot as the bouquet and flavors will be muted. Sake can have a multitude of aromas and flavors.

Most common are apples, flowers, herbs, and spices. If you see a sake that it perceptibly cloudy, it is probably Nigori which is unfiltered and subtly sweet.

So, step out of your comfort zone and consider a sake with the terrific miso-glazed fish. You should be able to find a nice one for under $20.

Graham Gavert “FROM THE ARCHIVES”

Many people have helped to inspire interest in the history of Groton Long Point, and our resulting Archives is a direct result of that interest. Perhaps no one was more devoted to the project than Elizabeth “Libby” Colson, who sadly passed away earlier this spring. In an article in the News last summer, I wrote about the original group of residents – Libby & Bud Colson, Helen Ellison, and Helen & Jim Quinn – who started in the early 1980s, before there was even an official Archives, to pull together stories of GLP homes and their occupants. From that small beginning the activity of recording our history developed, and Libby was a hardworking participant, as well as an ever-present cheerleader.

Others came to the project, including Ellenrose Carroll, Cay Doran, Gloria Gavert, Sue Motycka, Fay Taylor, Geneva deLabry, Henrietta Spader & Sally Starzec. The group met faithfully every week during the winter season and their presence is still felt in the notes on the backs of photos and file labels written in various peopleʼs handwriting, not to mention their famous Index that has helped to organize a sizeable volume of material. After “retiring” from the weekly Archives group, however, Libby remained keenly aware of what was going on, and sheʼd make sure to attend some of the events where Archives would set up a display of photos and mem-

My own impression of Libby is of someone who could be depended upon when it came to promoting GLPʼs history, who did big things over the years but without a lot of noise and she never drew attention to herself. She may have envisioned her role as working in the background, but her contribution to what we know about GLP is large. She will remain as one the principal “Godmothers” of the Archives.

According to our history, Groton Long Point: 75 Years and Then Some, Libby and her husband Bud were among the many couples who met here at the beach. “Acquaintances here as children, Lib and Bud Colson met again in 1960, married and worked and lived at the Point ever since…. The Colsons continued an old tradition they began when they were told it was good luck to “stop and kick the wall at either end of the Boardwalk during a stroll.” Weʼve lost another stalwart Groton Long Pointer, but Libby Colson will always be remembered for what she did to preserve our history.

OK, here we go! The tennis tournament season starts off on Sunday, July 6th with The First Niagara Family Classic which will start at 9 am. Last July this tournament was new to GLP and proved to be quite popular.

Those of you who played last year should plan on playing again and those who are unfamiliar with this tournament should sign up for play and give it a try. Itʼs a family tournament so bring anyone who wants to play. The tournament will be completed in one day.

The Womenʼs Draw is scheduled for play at 8 am on Tuesday July 8th with the finals on Thursday, July 10th. The Womenʼs Doubles will start at 8 am on Tuesday, July 15th and finals on Thursday, July 17th.

Womenʼs Singles will be played on Tuesday, July 22nd with finals on Thursday, July 24th. All finals start at 9 am.

Menʼs Doubles begins on Saturday, July 19th at 8 am.

Menʼs Singles play will take place at 8 am on Saturday, July 26.

Mixed Doubles plays on Saturday, July 12th at 8 am.

Menʼs Doubles and Singles finals and Mixed Doubles finals take place on the following Sundays at 9 am.

Dates and times of the tournaments may change because of weather or other scheduling situations but PLEASE donʼt sign up for a tournament if you cannot play both days. You may scoff at the thought that you would ever make the finals but you never know.

Make sure you sign up at the YC the day before tournament play.

Edugardening: the theme garden

These days, my mother and I are the gardeners of the family.

My children have typical teenage interests, mostly athletic and social, which exclude my passion. Ironically, as my dream of growing and preserving enough for year-round consumption is largely realized, my fledglings are preparing to fly the coop.

When they were young and malleable, a bit of gardening was as much a part of summer as going to the beach and playing tennis. I would cart them around with me to various community garden projects, where my daughter would diligently sow beet seeds, to the delight of the do-gooder garden matrons, while my son would play on a nearby playground. At home, at least from a nostalgic distance, fun and learning seemed to flow seamlessly together. We would etch our names into growing pumpkins, graph the height of a sunflower, plant and sample an exotic, unpalatable vegetable featured in a beloved story book. (Bitter Dumplings by Jeanne M. Lee.) A thematic approach to gardening could pique the interest of the reluctant gardener, and add another dimension to gardening for all involved. While

my son would not deign to toil in the dirt as a volunteer, at home, he didnʼt mind exploring botanical themes such as “red!”, “spicy!”, “ouch!” (cacti), and “pizza!”. There is a garden that lingers in my mind, which my daughter and I used to dream about at bedtime, but never did plant. Our fairytale garden would be rosy and fragrant, with a fat Cinderella pumpkin, Jackʼs magic beans, the blue-flowering rampion after which Rapunzel was named. It would have white flowers that glow in the dark, like the shining diamond trees of The Twelve Dancing Sisters.

For now, Iʼm content to plant this garden in my head.

Maybe someday another little girl enchanted with fairytales will come my way.

The crowds along the Mystic & Noank shore cheered loudly as the restored wooden whaler, The Charles Morgan, made its way under the Mystic Bridge and out into the river on its way to New London!

Class A Reports SUMMER SCEDULE

The 2014 Summer racing season for the Fisherʼs Island Sound One Design, otherwise known as the Class Aʼs or Aboats, begins on Saturday, June 28 beginning at 1:30 p.m. off of Main Beach. Most of the remaining 14 boats of this onedesign fleet (all of which reside at Groton Long Point) are expected at the starting line.

The fleet is expected to celebrate the return of two beautifully restored boats: the Gull and Widgeon. Chris Christianʼs Gull was sent up to Rockport, Maine and was totally rebuilt, similar to the most recent restoration of the Kite and Petrel. In addition, Jennifer Bruno (daughter of Brooks Kuhn, and granddaughter of Barbara Young) had the Widgeon restored. Joe Devine led the restoration effort, which included installation of a fiberglass patch, a rebuild of the centerboard trunk, and replacement of the deck hardware and rigging.

This seasonʼs July schedule includes six race days, featuring the annual Vice Commodoreʼs Cup (on Sunday, July 13 beginning at 2 p.m.) and the entertaining Pequot race to Fisherʼs Island (on Saturday, July 26 beginning at 11 a.m.). Optis and Class C-420ʼs (sailed by participants in the GLPYC Junior Sailing program), as well as Lasers and Sunfish are expected to join the A-boats at the starting line to race in separate fleet races at both the Vice Commodoreʼs Cup in July and the Commodoreʼs Cup in August. Other July races include the opener on June 28 (part of the July series), and Point Races on Saturday, July 5 and 12 (beginning at 1:30) and on Sunday, July 20 at 2.

The August schedule includes the annual Commodoreʼs Cup on Sunday, August 10 at 2 p.m. Other August Class A races include Point Races on Saturday, August 2, 9 and 23 at 1:30 and Sunday, August 17 at Personal Banking by your local bank. 2.
