THE YOUNG MAN AND THE SEA!

Quinn Chase caught this fish, a 44”, 30 lbs striped bass, at a top secret spot off Groton Long Point called Quinn's Flat. This fish has only been exceeded by his sisters, Macy Chase with a 46” Striped Bass 3 years ago and Ruby Chase with the 48” family record 2 summers ago. All these fish were released to fight another day.

Quinn was lucky enough to have his great grandparents meet on Groton Long Point in 1930. His great-grandfather, Earle Chase, summered in Nautilus cottage and great-grandmother, Madelyn Wheeler, in Orient cottage both on East Shore Avenue. Quinnʼs grandfather Robert Chase was born in July in 1938. That year Madelyn decided to spend the September Equinox, September 21st, on the Connecticut shoreline and got trapped on Groton Long Point in Nautilus with baby Robert just 2 months old. It was the Hurricane of 1938. As the winds picked up Madelyn asked the yard man to see if he could go and shut the garage doors at Orient. He came back reporting that the garage doors had blown away.

These guys were in the paper last week when they played against each other for the singles trophy and now with each other they won the 15 and under doubles tournament. Shane Smolenski and Jack Antico.

Graham Gavert “FROM THE ARCHIVES” Henrietta Spaderʼs Recollections: Part III

This issue we conclude the history of the Womenʼs Auxiliary of the GLP Fire Dept., written by Henrietta Spader, who passed way in June, for Groton Long Point: 75 Years and Then Some: “In the early 60s, we enjoyed the addition to our community of several English families who were in our country while the men were at Electric Boat negotiating the purchase of high strength steel plates, castings, and other miscellaneous materials for the British Admiraltyʼs nuclear submarine program. The women joined in our activities and our children enjoyed their new friends. It was rather sad to see them leave.

“We purchased a flag for the Fire Department through the American Legion Post #115 of Noank. We also purchased flags and stands for the Police Department and voted to welcome into membership the wives of our police officers. In time, the membership was opened to anyone who had a connection to Groton Long Point….

“Over the years we have sponsored teen dances, aerobics, a Girl Scout Troop and classes in early American art….

A donation to the Groton Scholarship Fund for Fitch High School has been ongoing for years and with the eventual opening of the Grasso Southeastern Tech School it was voted to donate to their scholarship fund also.

“In 1979 a motion was made to disband because of low attendance at meetings…. After a great deal of discussion, however, it was voted to continue with monthly meetings again, after a trial period of quarterly ones were not too productive.

We did vote to dispense with programs. That year we also presented pins to EMTs. “During the last year the organization was known as the Auxiliary, we participated in the refurbishing of the Dodd room in the Casino by furnishing drapes in time for the dedication. The drapery material was donated and several members volunteered to measure, cut and sew them.

“We also donated $200 to the Association toward the purchase of a copy machine and $300 to the PTA towards the playground.

“Finally, at the annual meeting in March, 1982, it was voted to change the name of the organization, henceforth to be known as the Groton Long Point Womenʼs Organization. Also at that meeting, the playground became a priority.

“Throughout the history of this organization, dedicated volunteers along with willing helpers have been largely responsible for the many good things that took place over a span of 40 years.”

What an appropriate way to sum up the support that Henrietta Spader gave to GLP and its various activities.

These past few summers I have been enjoying Rose´s and normally I am a Pinot Noir girl! ( You are thinking this was the cooking column not the wine column) I asked John if he would write a column on a fabulous sparkling Rosé, my new summer favorite. I must say first and foremost this wine goes amazingly well with fresh shucked oysters and seafood. But we are needing to cook up all the zucchini that is growing abundantly in the garden now, so John said zucchini would pair nicely with this wine....so Vegetable Torte and sparkling Rosé will make a delightful dinner or lunch. If you do need a quick zucchini, most Friday nights we put out a bench at the end of our driveway and offer whatever came from our garden back home. The bench is usually cleared within a few minutes....so please feel free to help yourself whenever you see what you like.

1 8oz log of goat cheese, crumbled (optional) 1/2 cup freshly shaved Parmesan cheese DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees 2. Cook the zucchini, onions, garlic and 2 T olive oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat for 10 minutes until zucchini is tender. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Brush the red and yellow peppers and eggplant with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and roast on a baking sheet for 30-40 minutes, until soft but not browned.

4. In a casserole dish, place each vegetable in a single, overlapping layers, sprinkling Parmesan, goat cheese and salt/ pepper to taste between each layer of vegetables.

5. First layer, begin with the half the eggplant, then layer half the zucchini/onions, then all the red peppers, then all of the yellow peppers, the the rest of the zucchini and onions and final layer is the rest of the eggplant.

6. Cover the top with Syrian warp or waxed paper. Place a plate that fits snugly over and top it with heavy jars or soup cans.

Place on a baking sheet because the juices will leak out.

7. Chill completely.

8. Drain the liquids, invert on a platter and serve at room temperature. Slice it like a pie.

Katyʼs Kitchen features a delicious vegetable torte. She mentions an ideal pairing with a Rosé wine. These dry wines are very enjoyable on a warm summer day and pair especially well with lighter meals. These are not serious wines, but rather uncomplicated expressions of red grapes without the tannins, without the heaviness, and without the high levels of alcohol.

Rosé (pronounced roe-zay) wines are made from red grapes. They come in all shades of light red from soft pink to deep salmon. The flesh and juice of almost all grapes is clear. The Roséʼs coloration is created during the vinification process whereby the red grape skins are permitted only to briefly (as short as ten minutes!) come in contact with the grape juice thus imparting the light red hue to the wine. These wines are vinified “dry,” meaning that all of the grape sugars are converted to alcohol. The popularity of dry Rosés is on the rise. The growth trajectory had been stunted by White Zinfandels which are very sweet, pink wines and nothing like the dry Rosé.

However, consumers initially thought of Rosés as similarly sweet.

Rosés are made from a wide range of red grape varietals including Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Franc, Syrah,

Sangiovese, and Grenache.

Each grape imparts its unique flavor profile to the Rosé, but most commonly you will find hints of red cherry, strawberry, or melon. There is also a floral aroma and some herbal notes to lend complexity. The wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks, not oak casks, and so the flavors are clean and fairly straightforward. Rosés are refreshing and typically are medium-bodied. These wines are intended to be quaffed and not analyzed and critiqued.

Their refreshing acidity makes them good accompaniments for appetizers or even light dinner fare. They are best enjoyed slightly chilled, say forty-five minutes or so in the refrigerator before opening.

Purchasing a Rosé wine wonʼt break the bank as they typically retail for under $20.

Even the excellent sparkling Rosé mentioned in Katyʼs column is a $20 wine. On your wine storeʼs shelves youʼll note that Rosés are produced in many countries including France, Italy (where they are called Rosato), Spain (where they are called Rosado), and California. Look for the more recent vintages as these wines are not meant to be aged.

As you head out to the deck on an 80° late afternoon, think pink!

If you can imagine Diary of a Wimpy Kid set in the way-back times, this book is it. My NearDeath Adventures (99% True!)

is about a boy who goes looking for his long-lost father in the wilderness. Along the way, Stan has all kids of adventures learning how to be a lumberjack, and how to roll logs. This book by Alison DeCamp is illustrated with hundreds of funny old-time photos. Itʼs a mischievous and different book for 8-12 year olds.

A tiny magical brownie brownie is assigned to a very messy family. That is great news for the brownie, because he loves to clean. But bad news for the family, they love to be slobs. Told through diary and journal entries, Diary of a Mad Brownie by Bruce Coville, will make middle-graders — or anyone — laugh out loud.

Besides the fact that there were four strong A players in the Womenʼs Doubles tournament, there were other factors at work.

First of all there was a brisk wind from the North throughout most of the match but at times it would calm down and then gust up all of a sudden. A number of shots went way long when hit from that north side of the court.

Secondly, just as play was about to begin, the gentlemen from the Family Night tent crew began to yell, “Yo, Yo, Yo” to each other and then to jackhammer the spikes for the tent into the ground loudly hitting stone a numbeer of times. Kudos to all four players for playing through all that.

So, the “Comeback Kids!”.....

After losing that first set due to Staceyʼs powerful game at net and Tenleyʼs always being in the right place at the right time, Kim and Kate fell behind 2-5 in both the second and the third sets but crept back to 5-5 in both sets and then went ahead to take the the last two sets at 7-5, 7-5.

The turning point came when Kate and Kim began their lob stategy and then all four of the players began to lob. I had such a crick in my neck following all those shots. But it seemed to work. The wind continued to play a factor and a number of shots from north to south went long on those lobs. Players adjusted but the lobs took away Staceyʼs and Tenleyʼs previously strong power shots at the net.

Now that Iʼve embarassed both of them, on to the finals between Steven and Steven Boccia and Adam Hill and Charlie Newell. Iʼm going to have to get someone with better eyesight to report on the Menʼs Doubles because the ball was slammed around so fast and furiuosly that I honestly didnʼt see some of the shots.

Adam serving at 3-2 was the closest the Boccias would get in the first set. Even though Steven, the son, was pounding some strong shots and Steve, the father, was as consistent as he could be against the incredibly powerful forehands and volleys of Adam and Charlie, the Boccias lost that first set 6-2.

The strategy changed a bit in the second set. Steve, the father, started some nice lobs, which temporarily worked but they were held again to two games in the second set. So Adam and Charlie took the July Menʼs Doubles in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Kate, serving at 4-5 in the second set was down 0-40 in a real cliffhanger of a game. The scrappy team fought back to deuce and then took the games to 5-5. That had to help their confidence as they won the next two games to take the set.

Down again in the third set 2-5 Kate and Kim played a more consistent type of game, crept up to 5-5 on some very smart shots using the alleys and down the middle and took it all at 7-5 in the third.

Menʼs Doubles There was some “good guy” stuff going on in Menʼs Doubles this month. Alex Reed was in need of a partner and so his Dad, Jay, stepped up and onto the court for the first time in many years. (Anyone know how many years itʼs been?) After one quick refresher lesson there he was making it all the way to the semi finals. So kudos to “good guy”, Jay. Secondly, Charlie Newell, after playing in the semi finals in blistering humidity, immediately picked up his racket again to play in the Adult/Child tourna-

Through the Eyes of a Sailor Part II by Ali DeCesare Ali and Gordie Croce continue on their quest for a win in the 18 mile 420Ęźs race Leg one: Stonington to Mason Island. The leg was a long ride, and very slow going. My mind was full of, “Uh-oh, I shouldĘźve tacked when they did,â€? and “Oh, great, now those three boats are ahead of us.â€? But I was smiling, laughing, and fulfilling the goal IĘźd set for the day: have more fun than the other boats.

Leg two: A royal mess. Mason Island to Ram Island. Everyone rushing for lunch, everyone excited that the wind was picking up.

We were almost halfway done with the whole course, almost at the precious stash of food, the sacred bottles of water, the safety of solid ground. It was going so well, going so smoothly. A good start, a nice breeze, and we were off.

But wait! What horrors arise? An OCS on boat number 3371? A glance at our sail number confirms our fears: we were over the starting line. In dismay, we recrossed the start line and off we went...... again.

Have no fear, we made it to Ram Island. No, we didnĘźt gain many places back, but yes, there was still food for us. The sailing deities were looking out for our well-being on that day. Thank Poseidon for the gift of lunch and fresh water. One hour for a meal, then just a hop skip and a jump to the next stopover.

Leg three: Ram Island to GLP. With a full belly, satisfactory wind speeds, and some rested sea legs, we finished the leg in the

upper middle of the pack. We took a few minutes to sign autographs for all of our GLP fans, posed for some photos on the sailing red carpet, did a fly-by across East Shore, and we were off again.

Leg four: the final stretch from GLP to Fishers Island. A solid single tack all the way to the island.

An uneventful leg full of reminiscing on the legs past. Conversations starting with, “Remember this morning when‌â€? and ending in laughter.

We finished in 16th place overall out of a total of 40 racers, but we were the #1 fun boat. I enjoyed my day sailing, and even though I love some competition, getting too wrapped up in the final scoring only leads to disappointment and the undermining of an accomplishment.

I am proud of my ranking, and wouldnĘźt change a thing about the day. I enjoyed myself and hope to be able to participate in the second annual SECOR Volvo Fishers Island Sound Race in 2016.

4th of July Road Race

Another Huge Success!!

by Tom Zenowitz To start the day 48 youngsters ages 4 and under took part in the “cone to cone� race. This is a fairly new event to attract an interest in running at a young age. The youngest participants in the race were Rowen Mark (Evans), 15 month old and Abby Zenowitz, 16 month old. Great job to all who competed in this event!

The half-mile race around the inner lagoon was once again popular with 140 finishers. In the 5-12 year old race, Brady Swanson led the way with a time of 3:25. He was followed by Gavin OĘźBrien and Ryan Carroll. On the girlĘźs side, Jane Edwards was the top finisher, followed

by Kerry Walsh and Lily Borowiec.

The annual 5K race easily had its most competitors to date with 288 participants in this years race. The race was a hard fought battle to the end between GLP friendly rivals Matt Murphy and Steve Sargeant.

These two individuals who have dominated the traditional 4th of July race over the past few years was won by Matt Murphy in a time of 18:06, followed by Steve Sergeant in a time of 18:20. Pete Driscoll took third overall in a time of 20:09. On the womenĘźs side, Callie Breiter (9th overall) led the way in a time of 20:59. Liz Krenicky was the second female finisher (26th overall) in a

time of 22:19. Chris Dumais rounded out the top three female finsishers in a time of 22:37.

Thank you to all who participated in what has become the traditional way to start off the 4th of July in Groton Long Point. Participants donated over 500 non-perishable food items as the “registration fee� and the staff at The Groton Human Services Food Locker was extremely appreciative of the generosity of the Groton Long Point runners. A special thanks goes out to all members of the Groton Long Point community who make this annual race a success. Thank you to Prudy Hignett who once again donated the prizes of gift certificates to her local paint your own pottery studio. We thank the GLP Police Department for providing a safe race course for all runners to compete. The following people should also be recognized for their dedication and commitment to volunteering each and every summer for the races: Race committee members Joanne and Gary Zenowitz, John Lalima, Sally Huss, Anne Horbatuck and Maeve Defronzo. Lastly, it should be noted that Race Director Tom Zenowitz has worked tirelessly in volunteering his time over the past seventeen years to make this race the success it has become. Thank you!

Top 30 overall Finishers

Just like in many other sports, itĘźs never over til itĘźs over.

That was certainly the case during SundayĘźs A-boat Point Race when no fewer than five of the nine boats were in the lead at some point during the windwardleeward course off of Main Beach.

The race, sailed in a very light southerly breeze, was eventually won by Kip Wiley, his guest skipper, Gritia Wiley, and crew on Ginger. After rounding the final temporary buoy off of Main Beach, several boats, including Ginger, Cormorant, Pelican, and Kite, had a chance to steal a victory during the short upwind leg to the finish line.

But it was Ginger that was best able to navigate the very spotty breeze and strong East-to-West tide, barely edging Laura and Rick Grondin, and Dave Burkard in Cormorant and Jay Washburn, Bo McBee and Doug Hope in Kite at the finish line.

At the start of the race, a windward leg to a temporary mark West of Horseshoe Reef, Chris and Kristen ChristianĘźs Gull and Jay and Suzy FisherĘźs Pelican jumped out to an early lead. On the downwind sail from near Horseshoe to the temporary mark off Main Beach, several of the boats, including Petrel, sailed by Connie Young with son Joe and two grandchil-

dren on board, Sanderling, skippered by Doug Rose with Myles Hanson as crew, and Swallow, with Nuffy Murphy and Darcy Watson sailing, jockeyed for position. After the downward leg, it was Cormorant, which led the fleet as it headed for a second time around the windward-leeward course.

At the windward mark, only a couple of boat lengths separated Cormorant, Ginger, Pelican, and Kite. The wind lightened and the tide strengthened on the downward leg towards Main Beach. Pelican and Cormorant rounded the final mark first on their way to the finish line. But it was the WileyĘźs Ginger that came from behind to earn the first-place whistle, followed closely (in order) by Cormorant, Kite, Petrel, Swallow, Gull, Skimmer, Sanderling, and Pelican.

The fleet will hold itĘźs annual race to the Pequot Inn on FisherĘźs Island on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. off of Main Beach. In addition, Point Races are scheduled for the following day beginning at 2 p.m.

FYI BOATERS

A new bill has been signed into law in honor of a teenage girl, Emily Fedorko, who died last summer in a tubing accident off Greenwich, CT. On June 4, Gov. Dan Malloy signed “EmilyĘźs Law,â€? which establishes a minimum age for towing people behind a boat. It also requires boaters to complete safe towing instruction before earning a boating certificate.

Boat operaters must be at least 16 and have a valid operatorĘźs license, unless someone over the age of 18 who has had a valid safe boating certificate for at least two years is present to supervise. The law goes into effect on October 1, and fines for violating the law would range from $60 to $250.

The law previously stated that you needed to be just 13 years old to operate a private boat in Connecticut, so long as you have a safe boating certificate.

Emily Fedorko was 16 when she was killed last summer. Another teen was seriously injured as well after the boat they were tubing with hit them. The operator did have a certificate to operate the boat. So please be aware of this when tubing with your own friends and families.
