Information for pet owners

Gloucester County’s Department of Animal Control answers lots of calls asking what local laws require for animal welfare. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions. For more information on any of these topics, or to ask a different question, you can contact Animal Control at 804-693-5390 or check out www.gloucesterva.gov/animal-control.

All dogs 4 months of age and older must have a rabies shot and County dog license

Your dog’s license expires on the rabies expiration date

All animals that are penned or chained up must have adequate shelter and water, regardless of how long the animal is outside

Violations of these laws can result in fines of up to $2,500 per violation

Veterinarians are required to report all rabies vaccinations to the County Treasurer

The County license must be attached to your dog’s collar and on the dog at all times (even hunting dogs)

Dog shelters must have a “windbreak at its entrance and provide a quantity of bedding material consisting of hay, cedar shavings, or the equivalent that is sufficient to protect the animal from cold and promote the retention of body heat ”

The Gloucester County Treasurer’s Office would like to remind all county citizens that the second installment of personal property and real estate tax bills will be mailed in November, with a due date of December 5.

Payments made in the Treasurer's Office by, or postmarked with the date of, December 5, 2024 (or before) will be accepted as timely. Accounts remaining unpaid after the deadline will be subject to additional charges as provided by the Code of Virginia and the Gloucester County Code.

From the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office

Gloucester has a Land Use program which allows taxpayers to apply for reduced assessments on certain real estate devoted to agriculture, horticulture and forest uses.

The program requirements include:

5 acres minimum of contiguous land excluding a one-acre home site for Agricultural and Horticultural lands.

20 acres minimum of contiguous land excluding a one-acre home site for Forest Use.

The filing deadline for new applications and Revalidation Forms will be November 1 As a participant in the Land Use Program, the property owner is responsible for notifying the COR Office within 60 days following any change in use.

Dear Gloucester County Community,

The Gloucester County Public Schools (GCPS) July 11 school board meeting showcased significant achievements and updates. The Core 4 Summer Program, which integrated English, math, science, and history into community-based education, featured projects from Page Middle School students Josalynn Carmines and Kingsley Robbins Page Middle School Principal Ms Hendrix, Mathematics Teacher Mr Nealy, and other staff supported the students during the televised presentations (photo to the right) The Core 4 program served twenty-four students recommended by their teachers, making learning fun and relevant through a project-based approach

Peasley Middle School reported impressive gains in English performance for Black/African American students and students with disabilities, attributed to the ALL on Tutoring Program

The board approved the district’s comprehensive K-12 Literacy Plan, developed in collaboration with Region III literacy teams Special recognition goes to Jenn Worrell, Jenna Dominguez, Anna Harwood, Sharon Hendrix, Dr Amy Stamm, Dr Diron Ford, and Dr Jennifer Tingley for their contributions

The Gloucester High School Commons, cafeteria, kitchen, media center, and C-Hall are undergoing major renovations over the summer Major construction will be complete before teachers return from summer break As we approach the last year of construction and renovations, we are grateful for the community's support

The division's strategic plan was also shared with the school board and the public, with updates focusing on improving safety, enhancing student and staff wellness, strengthening communication and community engagement, ensuring efficient operations, and improving student academic outcomes. The strategic plan will be shared with all staff and the public for additional feedback

Additionally, the board approved funding for universal screening and enhanced safety checks for all students and visitors, starting this fall, ensuring a safer environment across all schools

We look forward to sharing the hard work of teachers, students, and staff when the 2023-24 academic results are shared with the school board and the public at the September meeting

According to Virginia Hunger Solutions, CEP is a powerful new tool that allows school divisions which meet a certain poverty threshold to offer breakfast and udents lunch to all at no charge Additionally, the measure streamlines school meal operations by eliminating the need to collect and process applications

Gloucester County’s team of Community Engagement Coordinators works to empower every citizen to engage in building a safe, supportive, and successful community. The County has a coordinator in each of Gloucester's elementary schools and both of our middle schools. They provide a wide variety of resources to school employees, students and families.

Head Start Program

The T. C. Walker Head Start Program is getting ready to receive our students for the new school year 2024-2025 on August 26, 2024.

The students will be so excited to play on their new playground! The teachers and family advocate have been working so hard to make the new school year a success.

The Gloucester NAACP, Gloucester High School, and the W.E.B. Dubois Honor Society are hosting a College and Career Fair on October 17 at Gloucester High School. This event is free and open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors from the Hampton Roads, Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck areas.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently unveiled a $5 1 million grant awarded to the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation, Inc to facilitate the construction of a Health Science building This state-of-the-art facility will play a pivotal role in recruiting, training, and retaining healthcare professionals while creating pathways for ongoing educational opportunities

Supported by $1 3 million in local contributions, the building will include simulation labs, classrooms, study rooms, and administrative offices for nursing, EMS, and other health science programs This expansion to the Warsaw campus will address space limitations and enable RCC to admit and train more qualified applicants With a strong track record of success, RCC aims to enhance its impact on the healthcare sector through strategic partnerships and innovative programming.

A fun learning experience with equal playtime for all participants who attend regularly. Standings are not kept. Practice 1-2 times per week and 1 game per week (on Saturdays). All children should have appropriate footwear & basketball (size 28.5). Practices start after Thanksgiving. Games begin Late Dec/Early January.

Evaluation day is mandatory to form appropriate teams, and is a great way to introduce new players to fundamental basketball skills in a fun, clinic-style setting.

Developmental youth basketball program for 3-5 year olds! Our youngest hoopers will have a fun, introductory experience to basketball with small goals, exciting games, and age-appropriate drills. A parent or guardian must accompany the child at practice. The group will meet once per week on Mondays. We will need volunteer assistance! Volunteer coaches will help with parent communication, practice planning and demonstrations. Parent or guardian participation during the program is mandatory!

Join our Beaverdam Birders for an evening of calling, listening and learning about owls. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MOVE STUDENTS INTO BEGINNER CLASSES IF THEY HAVE NOT ACHIEVED THE INTERMEDIATE REQUIREMENTS. Please be sure that your student should be in “intermediate” before enrolling (look for videos on the registration website). Beginner classes fill up quickly, and we may not have room for students incorrectly enrolled in intermediate classes to be moved into those beginner classes.

4-H Day Camps

4-H Day Camps span the whole summer! A few upcoming camps:

4-H Cloverbud Camp runs Aug. 6-8 in the mornings at Beaverdam Park. This is for children ages 5-8 who have completed kindergarten. Kids enjoy learning all about nature!

4-H Food Challenge Camp runs Aug. 13-15, from 1-4 p.m. at TC Walker. Nine-to-13 year olds will try cooking techniques while challenging their tastebuds and learning about kitchen safety!

Extreme Weather Resilience Camp, Aug. 22-23, from 1-4 p.m., for youth in grades 5-7. Learn how extreme weather impacts Coastal Virginia.

Save the date: the Gloucester County Master Gardeners Plant Extravaganza will be back from September 13-14 at the Moose Lodge. Members have been busy propagating and digging up plants to make your garden beautiful.

Come shop for native plants, shrubs, bulbs, houseplants, herbs and more. The proceeds from this event go to support scholarships for graduating seniors at Gloucester High and children planning to attend 4-H summer camp at Jamestown.

Come out to our 4-H Open House to learn about joining a club, starting a new club, and volunteering as a club leader. We will have information for parents and activities for youth. This will be on Tuesday, September 17 from 6-7 p.m. in the TC Walker Education Center cafeteria. The 4-H Club year starts October 1, so this is a great time to join. There is no cost to join a 4-H club.
