Behindthelingo:Whatexactly isa“smallbusiness?”
Gloucester County’s Director of Economic Development, Sherry Spring, gets a lot of questions about small businesses. You can talk to her about how to set them up, what locations are available, what grants exist to help, and lots of other specifics.
However, for this edition of The Beehive, we’re going to take a step back and look at the concept from a 10,000foot vantage point
A small business is a company of relatively limited size, as measured by its revenues, number of employees, or both Often described as the "backbone" of the U S economy, small businesses range from sole proprietorships to corporations with multiple owners and sometimes hundreds of workers According to the U S Small Business Administration (SBA), there are more than 33 million small businesses in the country today, employing close to 62 million Americans
Key Takeaways:
Small businesses are generally defined in terms of their revenue or number of employees.
The criteria for what's considered small can vary from one industry to another.
The SBA sets the revenue and employee limits for specific types of businesses.
Qualifying as a small business can make a company eligible for government contracts and other financial benefits
Small businesses can structure themselves in a variety of ways for tax and legal purposes, including insulating their owners from financial liability
For simplicity's sake, the SBA’s Office of Advocacy generally defines one as "an independent business having fewer than 500 employees " But a small business can have as many as 1,500 employees, depending on the industry, and its annual revenues can range as high as $40 million
Most small businesses, however, are truly small. In 2023, according to SBA data, close to 82% of small businesses in the U.S. were one-person operations, with no employees aside from the owner.
If you’re interested in setting up a small business in Gloucester County, come talk to Sherry first! She enjoys helping people successfully navigate the process

Winter weather can turn roads and walkways dangerous. If you're not able to get around, that can limit access to childcare, schools, work and medical services. It's critically important that you prepare your family before a winter storm sets in. Here are a few tips from Emergency Management about how to secure your home, your car and your health.
Before we even look at those, please make sure you're signed up for the Gloucester County emergency notification system! "Bee Alert" will let you know about possible weather impacts and/or threats to your area. The County may also use the system to announce road closures. If we need to share life-saving information, we turn to Bee Alert. Contact our Emergency Management team at 804-693-1390 to register. You can opt out at any time.
1
During a winter storm, stay off the roads as much as possible Only drive when absolutely necessary Always give snow plows the right of way.
5
Protect yourself from frostbite! Your hands, feet, and face are the most commonly affected areas Wear a hat, mittens (which are warmer than gloves) and cover your mouth with a scarf
2
If you must travel, know the road conditions before you leave home Visit 511Virginia org or call 511 for road condition updates.
6
Snow shoveling is a known trigger for heart attacks! Always avoid overexertion when shoveling
3
Wear several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing (rather than one layer of heavy clothing).
7
Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoalburning device inside your home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or any other partially enclosed area
4
Keep dry! Change out of wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat
8
When severe weather occurs, plan to check on elderly or disabled neighbors and relatives
In November, you might have seen the heartwarming story from Gloucester County Animal Control, where we helped reconnect two dogs who found themselves 1,500 miles from home Sugar and Susie had wriggled out of their backyard in Oklahoma, and two weeks later, showed up in Gloucester!
We don’t know how they traveled so far, but we do know their family was broken-hearted Despite looking all over their neighborhood and town, they weren’t able to find their pups
When Animal Control Officers scanned for microchips,
Typically, it costs between $25 and $60 to get a veterinarian to set up a microchip. Despite the low cost, the peace of mind that microchips provide for pet owners is invaluable If a pet gets lost, animal shelters and veterinarians can scan the chip and obtain the owner’s contact information
Microchips provide a permanent form of identification that is not affected by wear and tear - unlike collars and tags, which can be lost They play a crucial role in safety and management of our beloved pets
When we think about microchips now, we’re always
Microchipping is a simple, effective, and affordable way to protect pets and improve the chances of reuniting them with their families
Animal Control encourages all pet owners to utililizeutilize microchips to ensure the safety and security of their beloved family members.

Spring is the perfect time for Gloucester County residents to prepare for mosquito season. By following these steps, you can help eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
Gloucester County's mosquito control program focuses on certain "Mosquito Control Districts." Within those areas, teams set a schedule to check for mosquitoes and treat as necessary Residents who live in the districts pay a special Mosquito Control Tax to fund the work
Not sure if you live in a mosquito control district? You can visit Gloucesterva gov/mosquito-control to review the map
Remove any type of container that will hold water, like flowerpots, old tires, bird baths, buckets, etc. It only takes a teaspoon of water to become a mosquito larvae hatchery!
Mosquitoes love resting in overgrown shrubbery and tall grasses. Trimming your shrubs and cutting your lawn encourages mosquitoes to rest elsewhere.
If you have any questions, or you would like to report a mosquito problem within the bounds of a Mosquito Control District, please call 804-693-6269 or email us at mosquito@gloucesterva info
In spring, mosquito control staff distribute release forms to residents whose homes are more than 150 feet from a public road within designated mosquito control districts.
district The release forms are required to be completed and returned each year to allow the County to come onto private property and apply adulticide.
Mosquito control staff initiates larval control by placing larvicide briquettes into roadside ditches
Larval control is considered the most effective way to manage the mosquito population. It kills mosquitoes before they become flying, reproducing adults.
Following larvicide distribution, our team will surveil to determine the presence of larvae
This means Mosquito control drivers will take water samples from roadside ditches to determine if larvae are present, and conduct landing counts to determine if adult mosquitoes are present.
If landing counts warrant, mosquito control trucks will initiate adulticide fogging
Adulticide fogging is considered the control method of last resort, since it dissipates quickly and is only effective until the next day. Adulticide fogging cannot be applied when it is raining, or the wind speed is over 10 mph.

Have you ever thought about this? When students walk through our school doors daily, we often have no idea what they've been through. Some may have lost a parent, struggled with anxiety or depression, or stayed awake all night worrying about a loved one's illness. Whether you come from a poor, middle-class, or wealthy family, we all relate to how it feels to be misunderstood, not accepted, or heard.
Each day, in our hundreds of interactions with people, we have the choice to let personal history, self-interests, relationships, politics, and associations cloud our ability to listen, or to reserve judgment and genuinely hear others
Dr Martin Luther King Jr , who has ties to Holly Knoll in Gloucester through his visits to Dr Robert Russa Moton's house on the York River, reminds us of this through his words: "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character " His time spent in Gloucester, seeking solace and connection, underscores the significance of a listening without judgment and embracing others' humanity, not only when it comes to race, but to all differences that make us unique and special as human beings
The older I get, the more I truly understand the importance of listening When we listen, we find solutions When we don't, we create barriers, resentment, and disconnections
This past May, my family celebrated 40 years in the United States, a journey that taught me the profound power of listening. Having served in the U.S. Army and lived in rural, suburban, and urban communities, I've seen firsthand that what truly makes a place special is the community's ability to listen.
Gloucester is one of those places. It's a community where listening is part of who we are. Listening is about understanding, reflecting, and showing kindness. It doesn't mean we must agree on everything, but we accept each other's humanity and seek common ground.
And what is common ground? It's the shared belief that we care for one another, and want the best for our community
As I approach my second anniversary as Gloucester's superintendent, I couldn't be prouder of our teachers, students, families, and school staff Gloucester is a place where we listen; because of that, we can grow together, support one another, and make a difference in the lives of our young people And that is the one job good educators do well remove barriers
By continuing to listen, we will strengthen the connections that make Gloucester a community and a home for all of us Let's keep building bridges, finding solutions, and celebrating the spirit of listening that makes Gloucester unique.
Sincerely,
Anthony Vladu, Ed D Division Superintendent
Our cafeterias are Celebrating National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) from March 3-7, 2025!
NSBW celebrates the importance of a nutritious school breakfast in fueling students for success This special observance during the first week of March celebrates the many ways our National School Breakfast Program gives kids a great start every day
Children who eat breakfast are more likely to:
Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math.
Score higher on standardized tests.
Have better concentration and memory.
Be more alert, and maintain a healthy weight.
When the week gets busy, it’s easy for students to rush out the door without having a nutritious meal That’s why school breakfast is such a great option! Students who participate in school breakfast tend to have better attendance rates and fewer behavioral problems
The School Breakfast Program provides 12 million nutritious breakfasts to hungry children across the country every day These breakfasts tend to be more nutritious than the average breakfast a child gets from home or a convenient fast-food restaurant (School Nutrition Association, Schoolnutrition org)
Be sure to check your student’s School Breakfast Menu to see what we’re serving! You can easily check school menus online. This is not only a “Go Green” initiative, but a powerful interactive tool to learn the nutrition facts of all menu items. It also features an allergies filter tool, which helps students & parents quickly identify foods with specific ingredients; the filter will mark out foods the students should avoid.
You can access our menu with all these features at https://linqconnect.com. Scroll to the bottom and click on “school menus,” then enter Gloucester County for the district Alternatively, you can download the Linq Connect app for your cell phone or handheld device from the app store or Google Play
Our cafeterias feature the “Virginia Harvest of the Month” each month in all of our cafeterias! Be sure to encourage your students to try our featured menu items
The Virginia Harvest of the Month program promotes seasonal eating, increased fruit and vegetable consumption, and supports local economies while providing ready-to-use materials for classrooms, cafeterias, nonprofits, farmers’ markets, and early care centers to educate children about the joys of eating seasonal, local foods.
According to the DOE, the objective of the program is to increase consumption of seasonal, Virginia-grown fresh fruits and vegetables so children establish healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.
