SKIN FOOD

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Have you heard of the old adage, "you are what you eat"? Apply that same principle to skin and haircare, and what you get is double benefits. We've rounded up some foods that not only taste great, but also make us look and feel great all over. www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag | 3

Acai Berry

Avocado

Brown Sugar

BENEFITS:

BENEFITS:

BENEFITS:

Acai contains substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are powerful antioxidants that interfere with aging by neutralizing harmful free radicals produced by the body.

Avocado is in virtually every sandwich for a reason – the fruit is chock full of nutrients and tastes great to boot. Avocado oil has many benefits, one of which is hair nourishment and growth. It is particularly useful for people who have dry hair.

Sugar is a natural humectant and source of glycolic acid, which means it not only helps hydrate skin by keeping moisture in, but also encourages cell turnover for younger-looking skin. Its small particles make excellent exfoliators.

BENEFITS:

A natural sweetener that's a healthy (and tasty!) alternative to processed sugars. It contains natural antioxidant properties that provide anti-aging benefits.

The vitamin C in lemons is a powerful antioxidant that speeds up cell turnover and improves your skin’s ability to heal. Lemon juice is also a natural antiseptic, which helps clear dirt and bacteria when applied to skin.

Soy is rich in antioxidants and nutrients such as isoflavones and lecithin that work together to smooth skin texture and improve radiance. Soy lipids also help regenerate damaged tissue, which encourages healthy skin healing.

OUTDOOR VOICES Finding the perfect gym outfit that keeps us looking chic while sweating away is no small feat. That is, until we came across Outdoor Voices. Co-founders Tyler Haney and Matt McIntyre first met at Parson's the New School for Design, where they crossed paths more often at the gym than in classes. Aside from exercise, both also have a mutual interest in style and recognized an opportunity in the marketplace for technically-advanced activewear with high design principles in mind. We sat down with Tyler and Matt to learn more about their line.

GLOSSYBOX MAG: What is it like working together? OUTDOOR VOICES: We have a lot of fun. Up until now it’s just been the two of us, which gets a bit difficult in terms of managing everything that needs to be done, but we have a lot of energy and use it to the fullest. We just delivered our first collection to retail stores (phew!) and are now hiring a few key people and bringing on interns to start expanding the Outdoor Voices team. GM: What inspired both of you to start your own clothing line? OV: We’re influenced by time spent on tracks, courts, fields, paths, and on the streets of New York City. We decided that we’ve got the energy, vision, and motivation to make waves in the activewear world so we spent the last year researching fabrics, getting acquainted with production processes, and selling product. We’re 8 | www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag

as enthused as ever to be bringing Outdoor Voices to life. The name of our line is rooted in the childhood memory of your mom telling you to “use your indoor voice.” Outdoor Voices represents the spirit, energy, and impulse you have as a child to release your inner wild side. Shout it out! We’re creating a sophisticated urban style that you can happily move and sweat in. GM: Your clothes strike the perfect balance between chic and sporty. Is it difficult to navigate that? OV: First things first, we’re an activewear brand. Many brands are trying to strike this fusion between casual “fashionable” style and technical functionality, we’re really branding ourselves as an activewear brand with a focus on quality, fit, function, and aesthetic in a simple well-designed brand package.

Glossy Crush GM: I'm sure you guys are an active bunch. What is your favorite exercise/ sport and why? OV: We are involved in a diverse group of activities to stay active—some more casual than others. Firstly, when we started OV we both bought bikes and biked through the city rather than take the subway. We’d show up at meetings with our helmets in hand and I think that’s part of the Outdoor Voices lifestyle. I [Tyler] find myself at Soul Cycin NYC or Yas in Venice, CA as often as possible. I love the quick dose of high intensity energy and the tunes are hard to beat. We also love to hike. Anywhere we travel for business, we try to find the best hiking spots.

le

GM: Any tips on staying healthy? OV: For us, it’s balance. Work as hard as you can at something, but remember, you have to have fun while you’re doing it. Otherwise, it's not worth it.

KRISTEN JAMES

As a master teacher in the field of fitness and wellness for the past 20 years, Kristen James knows about working out and staying healthy. Her 50 Shapes Workout (inspired by, you guessed it, 50 Shades of Grey) is a resounding success, attracting the attention of Huffington Post, Fitness Magazine, Katie Couric, and many more. Below, we find out this fitness guru's daily habits.

GLOSSYBOX MAG: What do you have for breakfast everyday? Kristen James: My go-to breakfast is a “Van’s” waffle with natural peanut butter and organic jelly on top. GM: What are your favorite foods for snacking? KJ: Favorite snacking foods - carrots and hummus, Skinny Pop popcorn, edamame, and fresh fruit. GM: Do you have any tips for eating tasty and healthy? KJ: Eat flavorful foods and you'll reduce your risk of overeating later in the day. Eat breakfast and keep carbs limited to daytime instead of the evening. GM: What are the main areas women want to tone? KJ: Women all want tight abs and lean legs! GM: What is your favorite part about working out? KJ: My favorite part about working out would definitely be the endorphin rush I get. GM: Tell us more about the 50 Shapes Workout. KJ: It's a workout created for everybody! It's geared toward bringing women results inside and outside of the bedroom and done three times a week. You're definitely going to see improvements in all areas of your life! GM: How do you think fitness relates to beauty? KJ: Being fit makes you feel more confident and in turn you'll feel even more beautiful from the inside out. 10 | www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag

Fitness Bloggers GM: Describe your beauty routine. KJ: I am a big fan of moisturizer. I love working out with a clean, fresh face and body. Afterwards, I love getting dressed using serious moisturizers and minimal makeup. My only coverage during the day, is from a tinted moisturizer. GM: Do you wear makeup at the gym? What is your stance on that? KJ: I do wear make up to the gym! I love to look my best all the time, and if it makes me feel better, then I do it. While I workout, I wear (and I am actually obsessed with) my Peter Thomas Roth "brightening" tinted moisturizer and some waterproof mascara, clear lip balm and that's it. GM: What are the myths surrounding working out/fitness you would most like to dispel? KJ: Years ago, I would have said the greatest myth is that women will bulk up if they weight train, but I think we've gotten over that one. Now I would say the greatest myth is that you have to work out for hours a day to have a great body. Its simply not true. 45 minutes to an hour and that's it for a seriously toned, lean body. Any more (unless you're training for an athletic event) is just damaging to your body. I think so many people work out for hours because they're trying to work off all of the junk food they eat. Instead they should focus on getting their diets correct and use exercise to strengthen and tighten the body.

MIZZ FIT BIANCA JADE

Bianca Jade aka MizzFIT loved working out so much that she left a successful advertising career to create MizzFIT.com, and never looked back. Since then, she has been on The Today Show, Shape Magazine, People Style Watch, and scores of other publications as a fitness style expert. Her ultimate goal is to motivate women to feel healthier and look better.

GLOSSYBOX MAG: What do you have for breakfast everyday? Bianca Jade: When it comes to breakfast, I’m not really a creature of habit. I like variety (that’s why I change my workouts every day). Some days I’ll have oatmeal with fresh fruit, honey and almond butter on top. Some days it’s a fluffy scone from Sarabeth’s NYC and sometimes I’ll make myself a green or berry protein packed smoothie. I usually wake up hungry with a craving and go from there. But the one thing that never changes is that I need coffee every morning! GM: What are your favorite foods for snacking? BJ: I have to admit, I used to snack on candy for years! But I’m proud to share that I kicked that problem. I went without it for 21 days and let go of my addition. I turned my sweet tooth into a green tooth. Now I love to snack on raw veggies with a sinful dressing or dip. I think it’s good to feel like you’re being a little bad. GM: Do you have any tips for eating tasty and healthy? BJ: Yes! My trick is to educate yourself with cooking books. I’m not much of a cook but when I follow recipes I get a really great sense of fulfillment. My

12 | www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag www.glossybox.com/magazine

two favorite cooking books right now are “Salad For Dinner” and “Crazy Sexy Kitchen”. I also subscribe to Health Magazine and tear out all the amazing recipe pages so I can recreate them at home. For me, cooking is a fun challenge since I’m not naturally skilled at it. And you get to see everything that goes into your dishes because you’re in control. GM: What are the main areas women want to tone? BJ: The women I know and write for want to tone their waistlines, abdominal region, thighs, butt and arms. Pretty much everything! But I think the best part of the body to tone is your mind. When you start by shaping a strong self-image, the body quickly follows. GM: What is your favorite part about working out? BJ: I like the way sweating makes me feel—empowered, passionate and beautiful. But most of all it gives me balance. It helps me go with the flow and let go of stresses that this crazy life brings on. GM: How do you think fitness relates to beauty? BJ: Quite simply, when you feel good on the inside you feel vibrant on the outside. Everything blossoms from within, especially beauty.

YOU CAN EMBRACE YOUR INNER JOCK AND FASHIONISTA AS ONE. JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE GOING TO GET SWEATY DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T LOOK HOT DOING IT.

GM: Describe your beauty routine. BJ: I like to baby my skin, hair and body. I use non-irritating facial cleansers that don’t foam too much since I have dry, sensitive skin. I go to town on moisturizers and especially love creams that are thick and leave my skin feeling dewy. Since I spray tan weekly and wear makeup everyday, I firmly believe in exfoliation and never forgetting to wash my face before I go to bed at night. I swear by my Clarisonic brush! For my hair, I use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and I give it extra shine with Philip B’s Katira Hair Masque. And like any girl, I get mani’s and pedi’s often but since I do a lot of barefoot exercise I make a point to keep my feet and toenails looking their best. It’s how I put my best foot forward in the fitness industry! GM: What are the latest trends in fitness fashion? BJ: Right now I’m loving fitness blazers and sequined weight training gloves. I like to create trends instead of following them!

"

ing to sweat, what parts of your body will be moving the most, how much bending it requires and how fast you’ll be moving throughout the exercise. Not all activewear is built the same. I see women who wear run tights to yoga without realizing how sheer their tights are during bent over poses. I also see people wearing cotton to high-intensity cardio classes. That’s a big nono! Cotton absorbs sweat and becomes super heavy, weighing you down and may even cause chafing against the skin. If you take the time to think about what your workouts entail, you can put together a fit look that’s functional and stylish. GM: What are the myths surrounding working out/fitness you would most like to dispel? BJ: What I’d most like to dispel is the idea that working out is dreadful. I tell MizzFIT insiders and followers all the time: 1. You can embrace your inner jock and fashionista as one. 2. Just because you’re going to get sweaty doesn’t mean you can’t look hot doing it. 3. Easy is coasting. Hard is putting your heart into it.

GM: Tips on working out in style? BJ: My best tip is to dress for the workout you’re about to do, taking into account how much you’re go-

RAE LYU

BLOGGER FEATURE

THERAEVIEWER.COM

Our blogger of the month is Rae Lyu (better known by her screen name RAEview) of theRAEviewer.com. Since 2010, Rae has been running a beauty blog and YouTube how-to and style channel, predominantly reviewing luxury and designer beauty products to an audience of over 100,000 subscribers. In recent months, she started lifting weights (heavier than herself!) and doing hot yoga, as well as modifying her diet to eating clean. We spoke to Rae to get to know her better. Read on to find out her beauty favorites and how she started eating and living healthier and better.

GLOSSYBOX MAG: You've recently delved headlong into fitness — what urged you to do so? RAE LYU: Fitness always had its presence throughout my life since I was an avid runner, but I was plagued by terrible eating habits. I love late night ice cream, sugary candy like Skittles and Starbursts, and any kind of ramen. I decided to delve headlong into fitness last year in November because I was tired of the inconsistencies. I wanted my physical appearance to do justice to my muscular strength, and more importantly, I wanted to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. The heavier I lifted, the more I came to love the challenge of the weight. Then I decided I needed to increase my flexibility, so I started yoga. Powerlifting is all about control, while hot yoga is all about release. It was difficult for me to balance the two initially, but the effort both disciplines demanded was and continues to be worth it! GM: You've also started a clean-eating regime as well? How did you get started? 18 | www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag

RL: I was lucky enough to have a bodybuilder friend get me started on a clean-eating regime. He calculated my macros, I took his advice, and I utilized Google to discover the rest. I now carb cycle, which I had not done previously, and it has worked out very well for me! The key is to keep things simple. No junk food, reduce or eliminate salt, and increase protein intake if you are lifting heavy. I squat and dead lift at least my bodyweight three times a week, so I need the extra protein to ensure my muscles can recover and grow. At the end of the day, it is best to trust yourself and keep an eye out for how your body reacts to determine what produces the best results. GM: Let's talk beauty! What was your introduction to beauty? What made you really obsessed? RL: I was introduced to Lancome cosmetics and Shiseido skincare as a young girl by my grandmother. I remember my first ever Lancome mascara sample (Definicils) and my first Shiseido skin care (Pureness

Blogger of the Month Cleansing Foam). I used a lot of Revlon and MAC when I first started wearing makeup, but I became really obsessed with designer cosmetics at 18, after my sister gave me my first Dior eyeshadow quint, Tropical Light. She had purchased it for herself but found the colors too frosty for her taste. At the time, I loved frosty eyeshadow on the lower lash line so I wore the palette exclusively for three months. Then I found the joy in collecting limited editions and exclusives, which then blossomed into a hoarding problem. Now I just love finding any kind of product that is better or the best!

RL: My favorite beauty product of the moment is Lancome's Baume in Love because it is the first lip balm in bullet form that actually heals my dry lips. The brand I am most addicted to is Tom Ford because I adore nearly everything his beauty brand produces, but I cannot live without my mascaras and eyeliners from Lancome, lipsticks and eyeshadows from Armani, powders and bronzers from Guerlain, and lip glosses and nail polishes from Chanel. I love Jo Malone fragrances and body cremes, but when I want to amp things up, I wear Serge Lutens. In my bathroom, you will always find Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Shampoo, Diptyque Baies candle, and Jurlique Rose Body Oil.

"

I WAS TIRED OF THE INCONSISTENCIES. I WANTED MY PHYSICAL APPEARANCE TO DO JUSTICE TO MY MUSCULAR STRENGTH, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, I WANTED TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY AND FIT LIFESTYLE

GM: What are your favorite brands/products?

GEMS FROM THE

PHARMACY: GERMAN EDITION Forget the beauty level of a department store, often times the best beauty products can be found on the pharmacy shelves. This month, we sift through the pharmacies of Germany in search of beauty treasures.

Global Spotlight GERMANY

Olivenol Lip Balm by Medipharma Cosmetics This olive oil-based lip balm is the German favorite to keeping lips prepped and kiss-ready. Filled with olive oil from Tuscany, this balm will hydrate your lips leaving them supple and smooth.

Louis Widmer Eye Contour Cream When it comes to looking refreshed, German girls know best. Louis Widmer’s eye cream is essential for rejuvenating tired, dehydrated eyes. While it’s designed to treat sensitive areas like the neck and eye regions, it can also be used as an intensive-care facial cream to enhance moisture and soothe irritated skin.

Intensive Creme Hydrolipid Balance A pioneer in skincare, frei founder Walter Bouhon was the first in the industry to add high concentrations of Vitamins A to skincare products, an ingredient that remains relevant to anti-aging skincare to this day. With his love for innovative research, it is no surprise that his skincare line remains a favorite among Germans. This cream contains aloe vera, jojoba oil, urea, and primrose oil, all of which act to soothe and calm the skin.

EUBOS Liquid Skin Washing Emulsion Those with sensitive or dry skin should try this milky liquid cleanser. It’s packed with Allantoin and Vitamin E, so it moisturizes while it cleanses. Many deep cleansing formulas tend to dry out and strip your skin, but this cleanser is the best of both worlds!

Eucerin Redness Relief Daily Perfecting Lotion There’s nothing worse than suffering from red, irritated skin, but the Germans found a cure in Eucerin’s Redness Relief Perfecting Lotion. Containing natural Licochalone, green color neutralizers, and SPF 15, it will not only rid you of irritation, but also prevent you from further skin damage. www.glossybox.com/glossyboxmag | 23
