he UBC Rapid (AroCell, Bromma, Sweden; www.arocell.com) is a qualitative test to detect cytokeratin fragments 8 and 18 in urine for bladder cancer (BC) detection. A study led by researchers at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Berlin, Germany; www.charite.de) found that the combined use of UBC Rapid Test with BC risk factors including age, smoking status, and hematuria provides a fast, highly accurate, and non-invasive tool for screening patients for primary low-grade BC and especially primary high-grade BC. Microfluidic Chip Enables Simultaneous Diagnosis of COVID-19 and Influenza

esearchers from the Toyohashi University of Technology (Toyohashi, Japan; www.tut.ac.jp) and Jikei University School of Medicine (Tokyo, Japan; www.jikei. ac.jp) have developed a microfluidic chip that is capable of simultaneous diagnosis of COVID-19 and influenza diseases, by applying microfluidic chip technologies. The team demonstrated that the diagnostic device could perform multiplexed rapid and simultaneous diagnosis within 30 minutes.

First-Ever Blood-Based Test Detects Range of Cancers and Identifies Whether They Have Spread

cientists at the University of Oxford (Oxford, UK; www.ox.ac.uk) have developed a new minimally invasive and inexpensive blood test that can identify cancer in patients with non-specific symptoms.

The new type of blood test can be used to detect a range of cancers and whether these cancers have spread (metastasized) in the body. This is the first such technology that can determine the metastatic status of a cancer from a simple blood test, without prior knowledge of the primary cancer type.

Portable Prostate Cancer Test Uses Single Drop of Blood to Deliver Results in Minutes

highly portable and rapid prostate cancer screening kit could provide early warning to populations with higher incidence of prostate cancer and particularly those with limited access to health care, such as African American men. Fastest DNA Sequencing Technique Diagnoses Rare Genetic Diseases in Mere Hours

A

research effort by investigators at Stanford Medicine (Stanford, CA, USA; med. stanford.edu) has set the first Guinness World Record for the fastest DNA sequencing technique, which was used to sequence a human genome in just five hours and two minutes.

The researchers have developed a new ultra-rapid genome sequencing approach that was used to diagnose rare genetic diseases in an average of eight hours – a feat that’s nearly unheard of in standard clinical care.

Their solution, the autohaem devices, removes one of the biggest bottlenecks preventing quick, reliable malaria diagnosis which is best done by analyzing blood smears through a microscope.

CRISPR-Based Assay Detects Biomarker of Kidney Transplant Rejection in Urine

esearchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY, USA; www.rpi. edu) have developed a CRISPR-based assay that can sensitively and non-invasively detect a biomarker of acute kidney rejection in urine of potential transplant recipients. The assay could someday help diagnose rejection earlier and without a biopsy in transplant recipients. Being able to sensitively and non-invasively diagnose kidney rejection at an early stage would allow doctors to begin anti-rejection medication sooner.

One-Step Test Screens for 3 Rare Genetic Disorders in Newborns

A

study led by researchers at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI; Melbourne, Australia; www.mcri. edu.au) has found that a newly-developed test to screen for three rare genetic disorders simultaneously in newborns was feasible, reliable and scalable. The study found that screening for Prader Willi, Angelman and Dup15q syndromes using the new type of test would open new avenues for earlier diagnosis and treatment.

esearchers at Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ, USA; www.asu.edu) and the University of Washington (Seattle, WA, USA; www.washington.edu) have developed a novel method that uses simple, inexpensive, fast and accurate nano-sensors to pinpoint infectious diseases like Ebola virus and SARS CoV-2. The technology can be developed and produced at very low cost, deployed within weeks or days after an outbreak, and made available for around one cent per test.

n a breakthrough, scientists from the Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT Tokyo, Japan; www.shibaura-it.ac.jp) have developed an open-channel microfluidic device that can efficiently extract and purify tuberculosis genomic DNA fragments from human-plasma samples. Additionally, the reconfigurable device can prepare and analyze liquid biopsy samples with excellent selectivity and reliability, and create a versatile sample preparation platform for analysis techniques such as PCR and deep sequencing.

New Method Determines Optimal Number of Pathologists Needed for Correct Diagnosis

A

new method, named the Observers Needed for Evaluation of Subjective Tests (ONEST), has been developed to determine the optimal number of pathologists needed for a correct diagnosis. The method developed by researchers at the Texas A&M University School of Public Health (College Station, TX, USA; www. public-health.tamu.edu) could improve accuracy of disease diagnosis as pathology tests are mostly subjective, and even trained experts can disagree on results.

Multi-Cancer Early Detection Test Could Become Game-Changing Screening Tool

first-of-kind multi-cancer early detection test can detect over 50 types of cancers with a low false positive rate through a single blood draw. GRAIL’s (Menlo Park, CA, USA; www.grail.com) Galleri multi-cancer test uses next-generation sequencing and machine-learning algorithms to analyze methylation patterns of cell-free DNA in the bloodstream that could indicate the presence of cancer and predict the origin of the cancer signal with high accuracy.

MARCH ‘Fingerprint’ Machine Learning Technique Identifies Various Bacteria in Seconds

esearchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, Daejeon, Korea; www.kaist.ac.kr) have demonstrated a quicker, more accurate process for bacterial identification which can take hours and often longer, despite time being precious when diagnosing infections and selecting appropriate treatments. By teaching a deep learning algorithm to identify the “fingerprint” spectra of the molecular components of various bacteria, the researchers could classify various bacteria in different media with accuracies of up to 98%.

n a large, multi-institutional study, oncologists at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston, MA, USA; www.dana-farber.org) have demonstrated that a blood test to detect circulating tumor DNA can accurately predict recurrence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven oropharyngeal cancer following treatment. Their findings demonstrated the clinical validity and utility of circulating tumor tissue modified HPV DNA (TTMV-HPV DNA) testing in daily clinical practice as an effective surveillance tool for identifying patients with active and occult recurrent HPV-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Antibody Test Diagnoses MS in 20 Minutes

esearchers have validated a new antibody test to diagnose multiple sclerosis (MS) that measures kappa immunoglobulin free light chains in cerebrospinal fluid. The test developed by researchers at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA; www. mayoclinic.org) is labor-intensive and involves subjective visual interpretation.

Their study estimates a significant cost savings for the new test. Better yet, results are available in about 20 minutes.

DNA Test Cuts Diagnosis of Over 50 Genetic Diseases from Decades to Days

linical genomic scientists from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Sydney, Australia; www.garvan.org.au) have developed a single DNA test that can screen a patient’s genome for over 50 genetic neurological and neuromuscular diseases such as Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophies and fragile X syndrome.

The diseases covered by the test belong to a class of more than 50 diseases caused by unusually-long repetitive DNA sequences in a person’s genes that are known as ‘Short Tandem Repeat expansion disorders’.

Ionized Magnesium (Mg++) A Critical Piece of the Electrolyte Puzzle Electrolytes (Na+, K+, Ca++, Cl-) are all measured as ions because that is their only clinically active form. Now Mg++ can be measured the same way.

Ionized Magnesium (Mg++), not Total Magnesium (tMg), is the only physiologically active form of magnesium. Magnesium bound to protein, or chelated to phosphate, citrate, sulfate, or carbonate is inactive. tMg is an unreliable substitute for Mg++. Mg++ may be abnormal while tMg is normal, and vice versa.1,2 Mg++, and Ca++ can now be measured in the lab or at the point of care to provide a complete electrolyte analysis: Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++, Cl-, HCO3 -

If you are measuring K+ and Ca++, you should also be measuring Mg++ Mg++, Ca++, and K+ ion abnormalities are common in critical care medicine.

Mg++, Ca++, and K+ ions are interdependent and play a role in numerous disease processes, including diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, cardiac arrhythmia, and sepsis.

Mg++ is a vasodilator, Ca++ is a vasoconstrictor. Both are synergistic in maintaining vascular and bronchial smooth muscle tone.

Mg++ ion is an antagonist to Ca++ ion entry into cardiomyocytes.3 Serial monitoring of Mg++, Ca++, and K+ ions are all important in correcting or avoiding cardiac arrhythmias and cardiomyocyte necrosis.4,5,6 Hypokalemia may be unresponsive to potassium repletion unless hypomagnesemia is first corrected.7

Multi-Virus Test Offers Results in 30 Minutes

esearchers have developed a rapid test for viruses that can deliver results as accurate as lab tests within 30 minutes.

Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas (Dallas, TX, USA; www.utdallas. edu) demonstrated the method, called DIgitAl plasMONic nanobubble Detection (DIAMOND). The technology is 150 times more accurate than traditional rapid tests and matches the accuracy of PCR tests. The new strategy paves the way for much faster results than PCR tests, which often take a day or more for results to be determined.
