FC gridders looking for more consistency, wins

FOREST CITY - Forest City High football coach Chad Moore classifies the 2011 Indians as in a rebuilding phase, even though the team returns seven starters on offense and five on defense.

“Any time you go 1-8 the previous season, the next season is automatically a rebuilding year,” Moore said. “Our goal is to be more competitive in both our non-district and district games this season.

“We’re looking for more consistency on both sides of the ball, and we just want to improve with every practice and every game.”

The Indians return the main cog of their offense in quarterback Kyle Rosacker.

Last season, Rosacker established himself as a prolific passer and a strong runner. An all-district selectee, Rosacker completed 99 of 206 passes for 1,340 yards and nine touchdowns in the Indians spread offense.

He was also Forest City’s rushing leader, rushing for 618 yards on 157 attempts. Returnee Ben Collins was next in line, running for 114 yards on 33 attempts.

“We need to run the ball better this season and take pressure off our passing game,” Moore said.

Up front, the Indians return four offensive lineman, including Justin Putney, Nathan Friedrich, Riley Scharper and Seth Brown.

Also returning is wideout Parker Farland, who wasn’t a starter in every game, but saw considerable varsity action. Last season, Farland caught seven passes for 37 yards.

“Both are lefthanded, can play well in the back row and are good lefthanded hitters. They’ll be hitting on the right side.”

In seniors Ahna Bruns and Brooke Heusinkveld, the Eagles will return two players who should be some of the better middle hitters in the conference.

“Both have come a lot way since last year,” Freesmann said.

“Ahna and Brooke have good height at the net and should be strong in both hitting and blocking.

“Ahna is very athletic and has improved her hitting swing since last year. She also has a good vertical leap.

“Brooke has improved on knowing where to hit the ball on

the other side of the net and has also made strides in knowing what to do on both sides of the court.”

Both Bruns and Heusinkveld are six feet or just a bit over.

Bruns led the Eagles in kills last year with 133, an average of 1,5 per game. Heusinkveld finished with 76 kills.

The Eagles also return outside hitter Carlee Christianson. She was second on the team in kills last year with 98, an average of 1.2 per game.

“Carlee is another tall girl who has a unique swing and has also come a long way since last season,” Freesemann said.

Also seeing time at outside hitter will be junior Melissa Loeschen.

“She also has a unique swing but a good swing,” Freesemann said. “She has a lot of potential as

a hitter.”

The Eagles will miss Formanek in the back row, but return defensive specialists Katelin Willert, Courtney Zadow and Marcy Mayland.

Last season, Willert finished with 60 digs, an average of 1.3 per game.

Freesemann added that depth with be a strongpoint with the 2011 team. And that depth is weighted toward juniors and seniors.

She said 17 out for the team are either seniors or juniors, and 35 athletes out for volleyball from grades 9-12.

“The key to our season this year will be finding more consistency,” Freesemann said. “We have all the pieces of the puzzle in place. Now it’s just a matter of putting it all together.”

By the end of the season, Eekhoff was consistently the Cardinals’ third-place runner behind Toppin and Kronemann.

“We’re looking for good things from Kori,” Short said. “She’s a talented runner and had a

great season last fall.”

Jakoubek took 99th last year at state while Stokka took ran a personal best time and finished 103rd.

Zamago, a sophomore, and freshman Nicole Burgardt will be vying for spots on the varsity roster.

“Those are two quality runners who can go fast,” Short said. “But in order to reach our goal

of getting on that balcony, I figure we’ll need three runners in the top 13. The key for us will be to run well as a team.”

The Cardinal boys cross country team will return just one runner from West Hancock in senior David Schreuer.

The top runners for the Cardinals each of the past three seasons, Aric Siegrist, graduated last spring.

“David will vye for a spot on the varsity roster as well,” Short said.

“He also put a lot of miles on this summer.”

Short added that both this year’s Cardinal teams have outstanding chemistry.

“The kids all get along great and are pulling for each other, just like they did last year,” Short said.

EAGLES: FROM 3 this year,” Sanger said. “But we know teams are going to load up the box with nine people and we will be prepared to use some play action passing.

“We did that successfully last year and are looking for more of the same this season.”

On offense up front, returning starters include Jonny Eekhoff at center, Ben Ruter and Seth Goepel at the guards, Colbie Harms and Pat Smith at the tackles and Jacob Patterson at tight end, Smith, at 240 pounds, was an all-district pick at tackle last season.

Last season, Ruter and Harms were injured much of the season, but they return in good health this year.

It’s on the defensive side of the ball where the Eagles might make the most improvement this season.

Smith and Goepel return as the tackles with Ryder Clark and Patterson at the defensive ends.

The Eagles will not only be tough on defense up front, but their linebacking crew will be a big strength.

Zac Schleuger returns as the roving linebacker, while Gunnar Clark and Ibarra return as the outside backers.

Last season, Gunnar Clark was an all-district pick, as were Patterson and Goepel.

At a cornerback, Ryan Fedders returns as a starter.

Sanger said several players are battling for positions at the other corner and the safety positions.

“Defense has been our strongpoint over the years,” Sanger said. “And we should be tough there this season. Our offense may sputter at times, but our defense, I think, will be solid.”

The Eagles should be the favorite for a district title, but the coach said he expects North Iowa to return a lot of talent.

“They have a lot of kids back, and we’ll have a tough game with them,” Sanger said.

Other teams to look out for include Algona Bishop-Garrigan and Northwood-Kensett.

“Our goals are high, but they always are,” Sanger said. “Every year we want to be in that state championship game but we always take it one step at a time.

“We want finish first in the district and go deep into the playoffs.”

BRITT - After finishing 8-4 last season, making it to the Class A State Quarterfinals and with plenty of returning starters, expectations are high this fall for the West Hancock football team.

“I feel pretty good about this group and the way they’ve been practicing so far,” said West Hancock football coach Bob Sanger, who just started his 44th season as the Eagle coach.

“We lost two all-district people last year but we have five returning.

That tells you a little of the story right there.”’

The Eagles return eight starters on offense and seven on defense.

“We’ve got a lot of skilled kids back at a lot of positions on both sides of the ball and that will be a big factor for us,” Sanger said.

strongpoint of the Eagle team, as they return junior fullback Chris Schleuger and senior halfback Zac Schleuger.

Both were all-district picks last season and with good reason. Chris was one of the leading rushers in the area, running 279 times for 1,567

yards and 20 touchdowns. He averaged almost six yards per carry.

His older brother Zac was nearly as productive, gaining 1,252 yards on 131 carries for an average of over nine yard per rush. Zac also rushed for 15 touch-

downs.

Chris is more of a grinding runner, while Zac, a sprinter in track, will give defenses a breakaway threat to deal with.

For the past two seasons, Gerardo Ibarra has been the Eagles’ quarterback. But Sanger said

the senior will be moved to a tailback spot this season with senior Eric Cox taking over the quarterback position.

Indian spikers have new coach, but high expectations

FOREST CITY - The Forest City volleyball team lost its standout middle hitters, libero Natessa Bartleson and setter Alyssa Bredeson to graduation last spring, but the Indians return plenty of talent.

The Indians also have a new coach, after longtime coach Paula Rotta retired from that position last fall.

New coach Lacy Jerome thinks this year’s team will be successful.

“We lost a lot to graduation, but we have some good players coming back,” Jerome said last week. “We know we’ll have some tough matches this season, but this is a team that could surprise some people, too.”

Last season, the Indians had over 30

wins but lost five times to Lake Mills, including in tournaments.

“Lake Mills is tough again,” Jerome said. “But we may have developed more of a mental block with them than anything. We think we can do well against them, but they’ll be the type of games that will be won or lost before we play them.”

Lost to graduation were middle hitters Lauren Martin and Bailey Gilbertson. Last season, Martin finished with 312 kills, or 3 per game. Gilbertson added 264 kills, an average of 2.5 per game.

The Indians return three starters in senior outside hitter Amanda Busta, senior outside hitter Miranda Bartleson and outside hitter Tab Blaser.

The Indians, at least early in the season, will rely a lot on the hitting of Blaser, Busta and Bartleson.

Last season, the Indians suffered a key

loss when Blaser went down with a ligament tear in her knee and was lost for the season. That happened in the first game of the 2010 season, a loss to Lake Mills.

“Tab is healthy this season but we’ve got to be careful with her in practice,” Jerome said.

“She’s still rehabbing

but overall, she’ll be able to play well with the knee. We just need to keep her healthy.”

Busta will certainly be a key and a team leader along with Blaser and Bartleson. Busta is a versatile player who is an outstanding hitter and plays well in the back row.

In 2010, Busta finished with 185 kills, an average of 1.8 per game.

In the back row, she added 204 digs, an average of 2 per game.

“We’ll look for Amanda to provide some senior leadership for us this year,” Jerome said.

He added that Krein has the potential to be a good runner.

“Jon’s first love is track,” Kappos said. “He loves to run the 400 hurdles and the open 400 meters. But he’s shown promise at times; it’s just a matter of him learning to take to cross country like he did in track.”

Kleveland and Schwartz also have considerable experience as runners, Kappos said.

“Our kids go out for cross country for a variety of reasons.

“Some want to simply get in shape and others want to get in shape for winter sports. The goal is to get them interested in cross country as much as they are for other sports.”

Kappos said he’s liked what he’s seen in practice so far from both teams.

“We’ve been pleased with the effort,” he said. “We want our runners to relax and be smooth when they run. And a real key is getting their breathing under control. We’ll also be looking for some athletes to step up and take leadership roles.”

On the girls side, five athletes are out for cross country, but the only two varsity returnees are Carter Anderson and Quincy Vaagensmith.

“You have to have five girls to score in meets so hopefully everyone on the girls team stays out for the sport and remains healthy,” Kappos said.

Anderson has shown promise in meets the past two seasons and Vaagensmith has as well.

Others out for cross country include Emily Jenson, Stephanie Formanek and freshman Autumn Busta.

“We’ll be looking for solid improvement from the girls as the season progresses,” Kappos said. “As long as the work hard to get better in practice and meets we’ll have met our goals for the season Again, we don’t have anyone who really stands out on the girls team.”

He added that Busta has shown promise as just a freshman.

“She’s running well in practice,” Kappos said.

“She’s shown some strong potential and we look for good things from her as she learns the sport.”

Kappos added that Garner-Hayfield-West Hancock-Ventura is a solid favorite for girls and boys conference titles.

Lost to graduation last spring were the Indians’ two top receiving threats in Cole Anderson and Tyler Harmon.

In 2010, Harmon led the way with 24 catches for 262 yards while Anderson caught 21 passes for 348 yards. Also lost to graduation was wideout Andrew Montgomery, who nabbed 10 passes for 140 yards.

“We lack some depth in our offensive line, but it’s good to have all those kids returning,” Moore said. “And we have a lot of inexperience in our receiving corps and running backs.’

Ben Collins is the top returning running back. Other candidates in the backfield are Ben Nordskog, Colton Westerberg, Riley Moore, Isaac Tuttle and Josh Dakken.

the starter at tight end, while other receiving candidates are Tyler Flugum, Zach Bengston, Jon Mathiasen and Aaron Harms.

Moore said improving the defense will be a priority this season. The returning starters on defense include Matt Snyder and Friederich at the linebacker positions, Westerberg at defensive end and Josh Dakken at defensive back. Also returning is Jon Mathiasen at strong safety.

The Indians will be inexperienced in the defensive line, but Putney may play there along with Brian Brcka, Trent Walrod, Riley Scharper and Brown.

“We’re still a young team but we’ve gotten older this season,” Moore said. “We look for some growth in our play on both sides of the ball.”

The Indians lost all their district games last season and finished last in their Class 2A district. But they lost some close games in district action, including a dramatic comeback against Waterloo Columbus that fell short.

Playoff teams last year in the Indians’ district included Iowa Falls-Alden, Osage, New Hampton, Clarion-Goldfield and Waterloo Columbus.

Moore said Osage looks to be the favorite in the district, but Iowa Falls-Alden, last year’s district champ, could challenge.

“All those returning playoff teams will be tough,” Moore said.

“Obviously, we just want to be more competitive in our district.

Jerome said she could use two setters and go with a 4-2 offense,

but will also go with just one setter in a 5-1.

Natessa Bartleson will also be hard to replace. Last season, she finished with 291 digs, an average of 2.8 per game.

Candidates for back row defense this season include Hailey Church and Victoria Sopko.

Jerome talked about some of the team’s goals this season.

“We’d like to win the North Iowa Conference title after Lake Mills won it last year,” she said.

“Osage should also have a good team and we’ll be right in the mix with all of them.”

Rosacker will be main cog in FC offense

FOREST CITY - Kyle Rosacker has been the go-to guy in both football and basketball for Forest City the past three seasons, and he’s looking for a good football season in 2011.

“I’d like to improve my passing accuracy and limit the interceptions as much as I can,” said Rosacker, a senior quarterback.

“I think I’ve improved my passing over last year and I have better command of our offense and knowing who goes where on what plays.”

Last season, Rosacker was an all-district pick in football and put up some gaudy numbers.

He completed 99 of 206 passes for 1,340 yards.

Rosacker is also an outstanding runner once he gets out of the pocket. He led the Indians in rushing, running 157 times for 618 yards.

“Kyle is the main cog in our offense,” said Indian football coach Chad Moore. “He’s a dual threat with his running and passing and he has a great arm.

“But Kyle knows he made some bad decisions on throwing the ball last season. So far, I’ve seen improvement in his passing. He was sharp in both summer camp and in the practices we’ve had so far.”

Rosacker will also

serve as the team’s leader, especially on offense.

“Kyle leads by example more than anything,” Moore said. “He is a calm guy and not real vocal.

“He just leads with his play. And his teammates trust him. They know he’s going to go out there in every game and give it everything he has.”

Moore also likes Rosacker’s running ability.

“He’s elusive and finds way to avoid the pass rush,” the coach said. “Once he gets going, he has the ability to elude that first tackler and he’s a pretty physical runner who’s tough to bring down.”

Last season, the Indians finished winless in their Class 2A District and were 1-8 overall.

“We were pretty young last season and even though we lost some key players to graduation, we return a lot of experienced guys in key positions.

Rosacker grew up around Indian sports.

His dad Dan is the head Indian basketball coach and his brother Andrew was a quarterback on the Indian football team for a couple of seasons and also a starting guard in basketball.

Dan Rosacker isn’t coaching football this season, but was an Indian assistant under Moore for several years.

In his earlier years in Forest City, Dan coached middle school football.

“Kyle just grew up around sports,” Dan Rosacker said. “He knew at a young age what it’s like to be around sports and the lockeroom and playing field. He and Andrew would often tag along with me to football and basketball practices.”

Kyle says he and his brother Andrew played catch in the backyard and often played football, basketball and baseball with the kids in the neighborhood.

Andrew is at the University of Iowa, where he will be a junior this season.

“Kyle and Andrew were inseparable when they were young, and I

think Kyle really looked up to Andrew.”

Dan says Kyle is looking for a strong season as the Indians’ quarterback.

“He has a great arm and is an outstanding runner,” Dan said. “I think he’s really made a leap in improvement in his passing accuracy so far this season.”

Kyle also plays baseball in the summer and says his favorite sport is whatever he’s playing.

“I really don’t have a favorite sport,” he said.

“I like football in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the summer.”

BRITT - The West Hancock volleyball team will be looking for more wins in the North Iowa Conference this season, but with five starters returning, hopes are high in Britt for the Eagles.

“We were hot and cold last year and this year, we’ll be looking for more consistency,” said secondyear coach Sarah Freesemann.”We lost some close games last year in the conference and we’d like to turn those scores around this season.”

The Eagles have also been moved up to Class 2A after being in Class 1A this year.

“That’s just the way the enrollment lines were divided,” Freesemann said. “We had good competition in Class 1A last year but we know we’ll also see some good teams in Class 2A.” Lost to graduation were two starters in back row player Taylor Formanek and starting setter Amanda Verbrugge. Ashley Grant also graduated off of last year’s team.

Last season, Formanek finished with a team-leading 232 digs per game, an average of 2.2 per game.

Verbrugge was a two-year starter at setter and finished with 233 set assists, an average of 2.7 per game.

The good news is that the Eagles return plenty of talent, including both middle hitters and one outside hitter.

Freesemann will run mostly a 4-2 offense with setters Brookelyn Savoy and Kaylee Weiland returning. Weiland was a setter last year, and finished with 130 set assists, an average of 1.3 per game.

The Garner-HayfieldWest Hancock-Ventura (GH-WH-V) girls cross country team came close to accomplishing it’s most prestigious goal last season, finishing fourth at the Class 3A meet in Fort Dodge last fall.

The goal this year is to get back to state and finish in the top three, and maybe even higher. “Just the top three teams make it to the balcony at the awards ceremony,� Short said. “Our goal was to get to that balcony at state and we were just a point away.�

At state last year, the Cardinals ran well, as four runners had personal record times. “The problem was, three other teams did the same thing,� Short said. “This year, I think we have a great shot at getting to state for the fourth year in a row. But we have to accomplish other goals first.�

Other goals are to equal last year’s meetwin total of six, win the North Iowa Conference race and the district meet in late October.

Lost to graduation last spring were Ventura senior Andrea Toppin and Garner-Hayfield runner Lauren Opp. Toppin was the Cardinals’ top runner last year and took fifth at state overall by breaking the 15-minute barrier for three kilometers.

Indian spikers have new coach, but high expectations

FOREST CITY - The Forest City volleyball team lost its standout middle hitters, libero Natessa Bartleson and setter Alyssa Bredeson to graduation last spring, but the Indians return plenty of talent.

The Indians also have a new coach, after longtime coach Paula Rotta retired from that position last fall.

New coach Lacy Jerome thinks this year’s team will be successful.

“We lost a lot to graduation, but we have some good players coming back,” Jerome said last week. “We know we’ll have some tough matches this season, but this is a team that could surprise some people, too.”

Last season, the Indians had over 30

wins but lost five times to Lake Mills, including in tournaments.

“Lake Mills is tough again,” Jerome said. “But we may have developed more of a mental block with them than anything. We think we can do well against them, but they’ll be the type of games that will be won or lost before we play them.”

Lost to graduation were middle hitters Lauren Martin and Bailey Gilbertson. Last season, Martin finished with 312 kills, or 3 per game. Gilbertson added 264 kills, an average of 2.5 per game.

The Indians, at least early in the season, will rely a lot on the hitting of Blaser, Busta and Bartleson.

Last season, the Indians suffered a key

loss when Blaser went down with a ligament tear in her knee and was lost for the season. That happened in the first game of the 2010 season, a loss to Lake Mills.

“Tab is healthy this season but we’ve got to be careful with her in practice,” Jerome said.

“She’s still rehabbing

but overall, she’ll be able to play well with the knee. We just need to keep her healthy.”

Busta will certainly be a key and a team leader along with Blaser and Bartleson. Busta is a versatile player who is an outstanding hitter and plays well in the back row.

In 2010, Busta finished with 185 kills, an average of 1.8 per game.

In the back row, she added 204 digs, an average of 2 per game.

“We’ll look for Amanda to provide some senior leadership for us this year,” Jerome said.

He added that Krein has the potential to be a good runner.

“Jon’s first love is track,” Kappos said. “He loves to run the 400 hurdles and the open 400 meters. But he’s shown promise at times; it’s just a matter of him learning to take to cross country like he did in track.”

Kleveland and Schwartz also have considerable experience as runners, Kappos said.

“Our kids go out for cross country for a variety of reasons.

“Some want to simply get in shape and others want to get in shape for winter sports. The goal is to get them interested in cross country as much as they are for other sports.”

Kappos said he’s liked what he’s seen in practice so far from both teams.

“We’ve been pleased with the effort,” he said. “We want our runners to relax and be smooth when they run. And a real key is getting their breathing under control. We’ll also be looking for some athletes to step up and take leadership roles.”

On the girls side, five athletes are out for cross country, but the only two varsity returnees are Carter Anderson and Quincy Vaagensmith.

“You have to have five girls to score in meets so hopefully everyone on the girls team stays out for the sport and remains healthy,” Kappos said.

Anderson has shown promise in meets the past two seasons and Vaagensmith has as well.

Others out for cross country include Emily Jenson, Stephanie Formanek and freshman Autumn Busta.

“We’ll be looking for solid improvement from the girls as the season progresses,” Kappos said. “As long as the work hard to get better in practice and meets we’ll have met our goals for the season Again, we don’t have anyone who really stands out on the girls team.”

He added that Busta has shown promise as just a freshman.

“She’s running well in practice,” Kappos said.

“She’s shown some strong potential and we look for good things from her as she learns the sport.”

Kappos added that Garner-Hayfield-West Hancock-Ventura is a solid favorite for girls and boys conference titles.

Lost to graduation last spring were the Indians’ two top receiving threats in Cole Anderson and Tyler Harmon.

In 2010, Harmon led the way with 24 catches for 262 yards while Anderson caught 21 passes for 348 yards. Also lost to graduation was wideout Andrew Montgomery, who nabbed 10 passes for 140 yards.

“We lack some depth in our offensive line, but it’s good to have all those kids returning,” Moore said. “And we have a lot of inexperience in our receiving corps and running backs.’

Ben Collins is the top returning running back. Other candidates in the backfield are Ben Nordskog, Colton Westerberg, Riley Moore, Isaac Tuttle and Josh Dakken.

the starter at tight end, while other receiving candidates are Tyler Flugum, Zach Bengston, Jon Mathiasen and Aaron Harms.

Moore said improving the defense will be a priority this season. The returning starters on defense include Matt Snyder and Friederich at the linebacker positions, Westerberg at defensive end and Josh Dakken at defensive back. Also returning is Jon Mathiasen at strong safety.

The Indians will be inexperienced in the defensive line, but Putney may play there along with Brian Brcka, Trent Walrod, Riley Scharper and Brown.

“We’re still a young team but we’ve gotten older this season,” Moore said. “We look for some growth in our play on both sides of the ball.”

The Indians lost all their district games last season and finished last in their Class 2A district. But they lost some close games in district action, including a dramatic comeback against Waterloo Columbus that fell short.

Playoff teams last year in the Indians’ district included Iowa Falls-Alden, Osage, New Hampton, Clarion-Goldfield and Waterloo Columbus.

Moore said Osage looks to be the favorite in the district, but Iowa Falls-Alden, last year’s district champ, could challenge.

“All those returning playoff teams will be tough,” Moore said.

“Obviously, we just want to be more competitive in our district.

Jerome said she could use two setters and go with a 4-2 offense,

but will also go with just one setter in a 5-1.

Natessa Bartleson will also be hard to replace. Last season, she finished with 291 digs, an average of 2.8 per game.

Candidates for back row defense this season include Hailey Church and Victoria Sopko.

Jerome talked about some of the team’s goals this season.

“We’d like to win the North Iowa Conference title after Lake Mills won it last year,” she said.

“Osage should also have a good team and we’ll be right in the mix with all of them.”

“Both are lefthanded, can play well in the back row and are good lefthanded hitters. They’ll be hitting on the right side.”

In seniors Ahna Bruns and Brooke Heusinkveld, the Eagles will return two players who should be some of the better middle hitters in the conference.

“Both have come a lot way since last year,” Freesmann said.

“Ahna and Brooke have good height at the net and should be strong in both hitting and blocking.

“Ahna is very athletic and has improved her hitting swing since last year. She also has a good vertical leap.

“Brooke has improved on knowing where to hit the ball on

the other side of the net and has also made strides in knowing what to do on both sides of the court.”

Both Bruns and Heusinkveld are six feet or just a bit over.

Bruns led the Eagles in kills last year with 133, an average of 1,5 per game. Heusinkveld finished with 76 kills.

The Eagles also return outside hitter Carlee Christianson. She was second on the team in kills last year with 98, an average of 1.2 per game.

“Carlee is another tall girl who has a unique swing and has also come a long way since last season,” Freesemann said.

Also seeing time at outside hitter will be junior Melissa Loeschen.

“She also has a unique swing but a good swing,” Freesemann said. “She has a lot of potential as

a hitter.”

The Eagles will miss Formanek in the back row, but return defensive specialists Katelin Willert, Courtney Zadow and Marcy Mayland.

Last season, Willert finished with 60 digs, an average of 1.3 per game.

Freesemann added that depth with be a strongpoint with the 2011 team. And that depth is weighted toward juniors and seniors.

She said 17 out for the team are either seniors or juniors, and 35 athletes out for volleyball from grades 9-12.

“The key to our season this year will be finding more consistency,” Freesemann said. “We have all the pieces of the puzzle in place. Now it’s just a matter of putting it all together.”

Zamago, a sophomore, and freshman Nicole Burgardt will be vying for spots on the varsity roster.

“Those are two quality runners who can go fast,” Short said. “But in order to reach our goal

of getting on that balcony, I figure we’ll need three runners in the top 13. The key for us will be to run well as a team.”

The Cardinal boys cross country team will return just one runner from West Hancock in senior David Schreuer.

The top runners for the Cardinals each of the past three seasons, Aric Siegrist, graduated last spring.

“David will vye for a spot on the varsity roster as well,” Short said.

“He also put a lot of miles on this summer.”

Short added that both this year’s Cardinal teams have outstanding chemistry.

“The kids all get along great and are pulling for each other, just like they did last year,” Short said.

EAGLES: FROM 3 this year,” Sanger said. “But we know teams are going to load up the box with nine people and we will be prepared to use some play action passing.

“We did that successfully last year and are looking for more of the same this season.”

On offense up front, returning starters include Jonny Eekhoff at center, Ben Ruter and Seth Goepel at the guards, Colbie Harms and Pat Smith at the tackles and Jacob Patterson at tight end, Smith, at 240 pounds, was an all-district pick at tackle last season.

Last season, Ruter and Harms were injured much of the season, but they return in good health this year.

It’s on the defensive side of the ball where the Eagles might make the most improvement this season.

Smith and Goepel return as the tackles with Ryder Clark and Patterson at the defensive ends.

The Eagles will not only be tough on defense up front, but their linebacking crew will be a big strength.

Zac Schleuger returns as the roving linebacker, while Gunnar Clark and Ibarra return as the outside backers.

Last season, Gunnar Clark was an all-district pick, as were Patterson and Goepel.

At a cornerback, Ryan Fedders returns as a starter.

Sanger said several players are battling for positions at the other corner and the safety positions.

“Defense has been our strongpoint over the years,” Sanger said. “And we should be tough there this season. Our offense may sputter at times, but our defense, I think, will be solid.”

The Eagles should be the favorite for a district title, but the coach said he expects North Iowa to return a lot of talent.

“They have a lot of kids back, and we’ll have a tough game with them,” Sanger said.

Other teams to look out for include Algona Bishop-Garrigan and Northwood-Kensett.

“Our goals are high, but they always are,” Sanger said. “Every year we want to be in that state championship game but we always take it one step at a time.

“We want finish first in the district and go deep into the playoffs.”

BRITT - After finishing 8-4 last season, making it to the Class A State Quarterfinals and with plenty of returning starters, expectations are high this fall for the West Hancock football team.

“I feel pretty good about this group and the way they’ve been practicing so far,” said West Hancock football coach Bob Sanger, who just started his 44th season as the Eagle coach.

“We lost two all-district people last year but we have five returning.

That tells you a little of the story right there.”’

The Eagles return eight starters on offense and seven on defense.

“We’ve got a lot of skilled kids back at a lot of positions on both sides of the ball and that will be a big factor for us,” Sanger said.

strongpoint of the Eagle team, as they return junior fullback Chris Schleuger and senior halfback Zac Schleuger.

Both were all-district picks last season and with good reason. Chris was one of the leading rushers in the area, running 279 times for 1,567

yards and 20 touchdowns. He averaged almost six yards per carry.

His older brother Zac was nearly as productive, gaining 1,252 yards on 131 carries for an average of over nine yard per rush. Zac also rushed for 15 touch-

downs.

Chris is more of a grinding runner, while Zac, a sprinter in track, will give defenses a breakaway threat to deal with.

For the past two seasons, Gerardo Ibarra has been the Eagles’ quarterback. But Sanger said

the senior will be moved to a tailback spot this season with senior Eric Cox taking over the quarterback position.

FC gridders looking for more consistency, wins

FOREST CITY - Forest City High football coach Chad Moore classifies the 2011 Indians as in a rebuilding phase, even though the team returns seven starters on offense and five on defense.

“Any time you go 1-8 the previous season, the next season is automatically a rebuilding year,” Moore said. “Our goal is to be more competitive in both our non-district and district games this season.

“We’re looking for more consistency on both sides of the ball, and we just want to improve with every practice and every game.”

The Indians return the main cog of their offense in quarterback Kyle Rosacker.

Last season, Rosacker established himself as a prolific passer and a strong runner. An all-district selectee, Rosacker completed 99 of 206 passes for 1,340 yards and nine touchdowns in the Indians spread offense.

He was also Forest City’s rushing leader, rushing for 618 yards on 157 attempts. Returnee Ben Collins was next in line, running for 114 yards on 33 attempts.

“We need to run the ball better this season and take pressure off our passing game,” Moore said.

Up front, the Indians return four offensive lineman, including Justin Putney, Nathan Friedrich, Riley Scharper and Seth Brown.

Also returning is wideout Parker Farland, who wasn’t a starter in every game, but saw considerable varsity action. Last season, Farland caught seven passes for 37 yards.
