LEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake baseball team was 28-10 a year ago. The Lions placed second in the North Central Conference behind St. Edmond with a 15-3 mark.

And the No. 2 (3A) Lions return eight letterwinners, including six seniors, from that team that bowed out in the Class 3A substate final.

But, Lion fans, don’t make your hotel reservations for Des Moines for the end of July quite yet.

“That doesn’t give us a free ticket,” Clear Lake senior catcher Tanner Tusha said. “We still have to go out there and play.”

Clear Lake coach Seth Thompson agreed.

“We always tell kids whatever you have coming back doesn’t really matter,” Thompson said. “If there are kids out there outworking you, experience doesn’t really matter.”

Returning letterwinners for the Lions are seniors Tusha, Ozzie Adams, Zac Bendickson, Michael Keeran, Jake Kockler and Tanner Truesdell and juniors Gavin Sheakley and Luke Schiller.

Adams, who plays shortstop and pitches, hit .443 a year ago with 14 doubles and 28 RBIs. Truesdell, who hit .427, led the Lions a year ago with 52 RBI. Tusha hit .419 and drove in 40 runs.

“I think our offense could be our strongest point this year,” Tusha said. “We just have to go out there and prove it, really.”

Sheakley, a southpaw, and Adams return to anchor the Lions’ pitching staff.

Sheakley was 9-2 with a 3.66 earned run average in 57 1/3 innings a year ago. He struck out 48 and walked 25.

Adams was 8-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 45 innings of work. He struck out 58 and walked eight in his junior campaign.

“Everyone is really throwing pretty well,” Tusha said. “Ozzie and Gavin are throwing great.

“We have a few other guys that should step up.”

“We felt we had a good outfield last year and they’re all back,” the coach said. “We feel like we’re really athletic in our outfield.

“We feel like we can cover some ground and we have good arms out there. The infield — depending on who’s pitching — is always kind of a puzzle piece to figure out, but we feel comfortable.”

Thompson said St. Edmond has to be looked at as the conference favorite since the Gaels are the defending champion.

He said the rest of the league is a balanced one with no easy victories.

“We hope we’re there at the end near the top,” Thompson said of the NCC. “I think there’s a number of teams that could be there. I think the conference is going to be pretty deep.”

Adams said he’s excited to get his final season as a Lion underway.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for for awhile,” he said. “We’ve been playing together for a long time.

“We’re pretty excited for the season. Hopefully, it goes well.”

And Tusha knows where he wants to play his final game in his Lions’ uniform — Principal Park in Des Moines.

“We don’t really talk about it, but that’s our main goal,” Tusha said. “We have to get there.”

ABOUT THE INFORMATION

CHARLES CITY — If the Charles City Comets are to have the type of year in baseball to which they have become accustomed over the past decade or so, coach Rick Gabel and his staff will have to have some starting pitching emerge quickly.

The Comets were 26-9 in 2011, but they fell short of the state tournament, a situation that has not been common.

The Comets have qualified for five of the past eight state tournaments.

The Charles City offense should be in good shape as five starters return, including Zach Isakson and Jesse Etherington.

Isakson and Etherington hit .379 and .378, respectively, a season ago and combined for 40 runs batted in.

Unlike many teams, the Comets did not rely on the home-run ball to jump start the offense, so the changes in bats at the high school level should not have a profound impact at the plate for Charles City.

Graduated, though, are the top two pitchers from a season ago, and while Isakson and Nick Hageman each logged more than 20 innings on the mound, the key for the Comets’ success this year will be how quickly someone emerges as the dominant starter.

Hageman and Hunter Crawford are likely candidates to step up, but a number of juniors, including Connor Opp, Zach Mitchell and Dylan Montagne, could all take the ball.

The Charles City team has been a monument to consistency recently, so the Comets will not be expected to rebuild as opposed to simply reloading for another run to the top of the Northeast Iowa Conference standings.

The big unknown It’s a new cast of characters for MCHS after run to state title game

ASON CITY — When you ask Ryan Erickson about the season outlook for the Mason City High baseball team, he gives you a sly grin.

He’s quietly confident.

The outside perception is that the Mohawks lost truckloads of talent.

There’s no debating that.

Forty seven of the 2011 team’s 48 home runs graduated.

So, too, did four key starting pitchers from that team.

No returner had more than five at-bats last season. Five.

What remains is a team loaded with seniors but short on game experience.

What does that mean? Nobody seems to know yet.

“I know some people are doubting us,” Erickson said. “But me and the rest of the captains, we know ...”

A team that spent the final day of last year’s prep baseball season playing for a Class 4A state title looks completely different.

It doesn’t take long to list the key returners.

Erickson and Jack Esser combined for 57 innings pitched.

Esser, who will play shortstop, spent time at third base when Aaron Overbeck went out with a broken hand.

Taylor King and Connor DeRoy each pitched more than 10 innings apiece as well.

That’s about it.

These guys have played together for a long time, just never on the varsity.

Des Moines Valley — lacks experience.

Fort Dodge isn’t the Fort Dodge of last year. Ames is young. Marshalltown is Marshalltown and Waukee is going through a coaching transition.

That leaves Valley as the clear-cut favorite with the the rest of the conference up for grabs.

“I don’t think we have any dominant people like we had last year, but together we should be solid and have a lot of potential,” Esser said.

Mason City will not rely on the three-run bomb like it was capable of last season.

Rather, it’s about running the bases,then running a little more.

“We have some kids that can flat-out fly,” coach Troy Rood said. “We have some kids that can run. Those are the ways we can be successful.”

Mason City hopes to run out of the gates to build some confidence.

In all likelihood, Erickson, the talented left-hander, looks to be the ace off the staff.

He’s played in the Perfect Game league, topping out at 87 miles per hour this spring.

A lefty with four pitches, Rood thinks he has all the makings of a staff ace.

“He’s been in Perfect Game and been in the showcases,” Rood said. “He’s had radar guns on him and pitched in the state title game.”

Erickson threw a third of an inning in the Mohawks’ 6-1 title game loss to Dowling last July. Esser was the only other underclassman to play in that game. He was a pinch runner.

But one thing that Mason City has excelled at, despite losing talent over the past decade, is winning.

A big reason has been unexpected great outings from the pitching staff.

Two years ago Lee Gealow came out of nowhere to become an all-stater.

And who saw what A.J. Hrubetz did on the mound last summer coming?

So who is the breakout candidate this season? Rood doesn’t have that answer yet.

“One thing we are going to do is pound the strike zone,” Rood said. “We are inexperienced but we have a bunch of 18-year-olds going out there.”

Who’s back?

Mason City High doesn’t return much experience, but the Mohawks do have four pitchers who logged 10 or more innings last season.

• Jack Esser was 2-0 in 22-1/3 innings and had a 2.82 ERA.

• Ryan Erickson was 4th on the team with 35-1/3 innings pitched.

LATIMER — The CAL baseball team returns nearly its entire roster following last year’s 4-24 record.

The Cadets are still young — they have just two seniors in Alex Dohrman and Joel Johnson — and there is room for improvement.

“We’ll look to continue our rebuilding through a strong and disciplined understanding of the fundamentals,” first-year coach Ralph Bell said.

“Even though we will be a young team (seven freshmen and three sophomores), we do have four returning upperclassmen that are strong leaders.”

Dohrman led the team with a .439 batting average. He also recorded 29 hits, four doubles, a home run and 26 RBIs while also stealing 16 bases for the Cadets.

Meanwhile, Zach Vanness looks to improve on a strong eighth-grade season.

Vanness was third on the team with a .323 batting average, collecting 20 hits along with nine RBIs while Johnson batted .305 with 18 hits, 12 RBIs and scored 14 runs.

On the mound, Dohrman sported a 1-12 record, throwing 55 innings, striking out 54 with an ERA of 13.75.

Junior Ben Fahrman is the only other player on the roster with varsity pitching experience.

He was 1-4, throwing 12 2/3 innings but had control issues, walking 45 batters.

CWL BASEBALL

Panthers look to make move up LUVERNE — There’s nowhere to go but up for the CWL baseball team.

The Panthers won just one game last season, finishing 1-17.

This season, CWL is young as Cody Goetz is the lone senior.

Offensively, Goetz is the top returnee with 16 RBIs. The remaining returnees combined for 21 RBIs as the team sported a .214 batting average.

On the mound, Randy Cram threw 34 innings as a sophomore while Esden Carroll returns for his freshman season after tossing 11 innings as an eighth-grader.

Johnny Studer also figures to be in the pitching rotation after throwing 92/3 innings last season.

Are Indians ready for next step?

FOREST CITY — One win was what kept the Forest City baseball team from playing in the Class 2A state tournament.

Talk about a turnaround.

The Indians went into the postseason with a 1015 record before rattling off three-straight wins to earn a district title before bowing out to Waterloo Columbus in a substate final.

“Our record up to that point wasn’t really showing how good we had been playing,” Forest City coach Jeff Jerome said. “Part of it was having kids that believe.”

Jerome thinks he has a bunch of believers on his team now.

A muddled North Iowa Conference means unpredictability. For Jerome, he’s hoping the one thing that is predictable is the performance of his ace, junior pitcher Isaac Tuttle.

The lefthander Tuttle threw a league-high 75-2/3 innings last season, going 6-6 with a 2.50 earned run average. Opponents hit only .190 off of him. He recorded 77 strikeouts.

Belmond-Klemme’s Elijah Kenseth, who also returns, was second in the NIC with 62 innings pitched.

Tuttle isn’t overpowering — he tops out in the high 70s — but it’s the ability to throw three pitches for strikes that makes him effective.

“I think his ball moves quite a bit,” Jerome said.

“He gets ahead of batters and makes them pay. I don’t think a lot of kids knew his name (at the start of last season). He came out and surprised people.”

There will be no such surprises this season.

The Indians return a hefty core from last year’s team, including seniors Kyle Rosacker, Riley Scharper, Aaron Harms, Parker Farland and Jon Krein.

But as always, the race to win the North Iowa Conference goes through Newman Catholic.

The challenge of beating the Knights is one Jerome embraces.

“It’d be nice to get Newman,” Jerome admitted.

“Or at least play a full game with them.”

Jerome is in his seventh season as the head man for Forest City.

He admits his teams have been slow starters, a trait he hopes to reverse this season.

“The last couple of seasons we’ve put together a really competitive team in the postseason, ultimately, taking those small steps,” Jerome said. “We just need to start that a little earlier.”

Osage lost a host of talent off last year’s secondplace team in the NIC. The Green DevBushbaum ils finished 25-10 and had an 11-3 mark in league play.

Osage returns five seniors — Matt Bushbaum, Chris Weigle, Luke Hanke, Josh Lackore and Tanner Molitor — with Bushbuam being a returning Globe Gazette all-area performer.

“This will be a fun group,” Osage coach Mark Mohl said. “We have lots of positions up for grabs but will have kids that compete and like to win.”

Knights ready to replace power bats, innings eaters off state semifinal team

ASON CITY — The innings eaters and light-tower power guys are gone.

The talent isn’t.

Maybe Newman Catholic doesn’t have the top-end talent as it did a year ago, but the Knights say they still know how to play baseball.

“We don’t have the super-big power hitters but we have a lot of people that can help,” Newman senior Phillip Lapointe said.

“We have a lot of really good young guys and depth everywhere.”

Newman graduated 29 of its 34 pitching victories and 45 of its 50 home runs.

That leaves plenty of opportunities for a team that has dominated the North Iowa Conference to the tune of 109 straight victories.

“We have a lot of question marks,” Newman coach Tony Adams said. “And we don’t have a lot of experience on the mound. That is probably the biggest thing.”

Four starters return from the lineup Newman put on the field in the Class 1A state semifinal.

Jake Adams, Gabe Dunn and Casey Hall help solidify the Knights’ infield, although Adams is versatile enough to roam around in center field.

Alex Weber missed most of last season due to injury but started during the Knights’ run to state. Jack Fitzgerald and Lapointe also saw significant playing time.

Newman has won 33 straight conference titles and played in the state tournament nine of the past 11 years, winning titles in 2002 and 2009.

Newman finished 35-5 last season before losing to Lansing Kee at state.

“Their kids are always geared up and take on any challenge that is coming at them,” Forest City coach Jeff Jerome said.

The Knights’ biggest challenge this season is replenishing the pitching staff.

Newman’s top four arms from last season graduated, leaving Dunn and his 17 innings pitched as the most veteran pitcher on the roster. Dunn went 3-0 last season with a 0.41 earned run average.

No other returnee logged more than six innings a year ago.

“What I like about this group, without even looking at wins, is that it’s a good group and they want to be good,” coach Adams said. “They do the little things, but it is a lot of inexperience. We have a lot of Globe Gazette file photo work in front of us.”

MANLY — The string of Corn Bowl Conference titles sits at three.

For Central Springs, it’s been consecutive years of having allstate players pave the way.

This year, coach Ethan Miller thinks the recipe for success lies in the depth of of the Panthers’ pitching staff and playing small ball.

“We have a lot of kids that can pitch,” Miller said.“And we have guys that have been around a while.”

And that’s where it starts for

the Panthers.

They lost some good arms to graduation but the cupboard isn’t bare.

He lists Tyler Florea, Nick Treloar, Hunter Scholl, Colton Kisner and Kyle White as guys who will log innings.

The offense for the Panthers — like much of the state — revolves around small ball.

“How well can we effectively move runners?” Miller asked.

Central Springs advanced to a district semifinal last season after beating Osage but lost to Forest City with a spot in a substate final on the line.

The Panthers’ 25-6 record was easily the best in the Corn Bowl.

Pitching depth key for Panthers

“It’s seems like we are having to replace an all-state guy each year and we are trying to make up for that,” Miller said. “But I think we can have success.”

Miller said a big reason for the Panthers’ success of late is a winning culture.

“We’ve been around each other a long time,” the coach said. “The nice thing about our structure is that as eight-graders they are automatically infused with our seniors.”

Young Bulldogs must replace seven ALGONA — Algona softball fans can expect to see a bit of a youth movement in 2012 as the Bulldogs look to replace seven players from the roster of last season’s North Central Conference runners-up.

Dan Schreiber, Algona’s eighth-year coach, will have just two seniors amd two juniors on the roster “We will be very young,” Schreiber said. “Some core players and their backups have not played a complete varsity season, so we will have to see how they hold up.”

Sarah Steinman, a sophomore, will likely be the top pitcher for Algona while catching duties may go to a freshman, Justine Yeoman.

The strength of the Bulldogs will be in the outfield where Jeni Zeller and Leah Hamilton, two of the upperclassmen in the program, both return.

For Algona to challenge for a top spot in conference, the youth in the infield will have to develop quickly.

While Bartlett is a key behind the plate, she’s also one of the Lions’ top returning hitters along with Kaitlyn Pitzen, another junior.

Bartlett and Pitzen combined for 54 hits and 19 RBIs last season.

Petersburg said that her team will have to find a way to score runs this season.

“We don’t have the power hitters in our lineup,” the coach said.

“We’ll have to find ways to manufacture runs.”

If the Lions are able to do just that, there’s hope for a finish in the top half of the conference, which Petersburg said should feature St. Edmond and Webster City at the top.

“St. Edmond will be good once again but I think Webster City is also a team to beat,” she said.

“Webster City has Kaitlyn Briere back which will make them tough.”

Petersburg added there’s no easy night in the NCC. “Every night is tough in the conference,” Petersburg said. “No matter who you play you can expect a battle.”

OUT WITH A BANG? With talented seniors, No. 6 Knights have high hopes

MASON CITY — Jessica Balek is trying to make the most of her final season in a Newman Catholic uniform.

The all-state shortstop is one of eight letterwinners returning for the defending North Iowa Conference champions.

“I’m trying to go out with a bang, I guess,” Balek said. “I’m just hoping for the best and playing hard every day.”

Balek hit .375 with six doubles, four triples and 24 RBI during her junior campaign, earning her Class 1A second-team all-state honors by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Newman (27-9 overall a year ago) won the NIC for the first time in school history with a 13-1 mark.

The Knights bowed out in the regional quarterfinals a year ago with a 5-4 loss to St. Ansgar.

Other returning letterwinners for the experienced No. 6 (1A) Knights are seniors Sam Grant, Paige Halsted, Elli Ruen and Jena Stallsmith, junior Micah Chavez and sophomores Meagan Mueller and Sara Tefft.

Grant, a third baseman, said the Knights have high expectations this season but they’re not being talked about quite yet.

“We’re just focusing on the beginning of the year,” she said, “and working on our basics.

“We’re making sure we’re doing everything right the first time.”

Veteran Newman coach Tom Dunn said his team is ahead of where it was a year ago as most of the Knights have been practicing during the preseason.

“Last year, it was June 14,” Dunn said of the first day he had his entire team practice either due to spring sports or injuries, “which is kind of nice.

“They’re really working hard. We basically have our returning infield. At every infield spot we have someone who has started at least 10 games in their varsity career.”

One big question mark is the pitcher as the Knights seek to replace Ali Stearns, who is the school’s all-time wins leader.

Ruen looks to be the favorite to take over for Stearns.

year were to Emmetsburg and Crestwood and she threw a no-hitter against WCLT. “We’re really lucky to have somebody with her experience, and she’s worked really hard in the offseason.”

Balek said she knows nothing is guaranteed in her final season as a Newman Knight.

“We have high hopes again,” Balek said.

“We know we have to work hard to accomplish what we want.”

A quick glance at the Forest City softball team’s record shows the Indians finished with a 17-15 record.

However, those numbers are deceiving.

The Indians were slow out of the gate before finishing strong.

After starting 0-2 in the conference, the Indians won their final 12 North Iowa Conference games to finish 12-2 in the NIC, part of winning 15 of their final 19 games.

Coach Denny Gilbertson expects his team to once again be at the top of the conference race as the Indians return eight letterwinners, including two from WCLT. “The NIC race will be a good one once again with many teams returning quality athletes,” Gilbertson said. “We hope to put ourselves in position to be one of the contenders.”

Part of the Indians’ success will rely on the seniors.

Rachel Price returns in the circle while Maggie Eden, who played for WCLT last season, will be the other end of the battery.

Price went 15-11, throwing 161-2/3 innings for the Indians. She struck out 81 batters with an ERA of 3.98 and hitters had a batting average of .259 against her.

Offensively, Connor Thompson, Amanda Busta and Maggie Shipman all return.

The trio combined for 122 hits, 19 doubles, 10 home runs, three triples and 86 RBIs while each hit at least .374.

While the Indians are expected to compete for the conference title, Lake Mills looks to build off of its 10-3 NIC mark as well.

The Bulldogs, who were 18-15 overall, return nearly their entire team as Lindy Pins was the lone senior last season.

“Having the entire team returning aside from one player, Lindy Pins, I expect the players this year will have great success,” Lake Mills coach Sabrina Roll said. “I am excited as a coach to return for my second year with almost all of the same players from last year. We are always fighting for the conference title as well as making it far in tournament play.”

Lake Mills will once again rely on the right arm of senior Josie Brackey.

She recorded 342 strikeouts in 171-2/3 innings pitched, posting a record of 13-12 in the circle with an ERA of 1.18 and a .128 batting average against for the Bulldogs.

Brackey, who will play next season at Iowa Central, wasn’t just a threat in the circle for the Bulldogs as she collected 35 hits with four runs, 32 RBIs, 11 doubles, one triple and two home run while batting .361 with an on-base percentage of .446 and slugging percentage of .557.

entral Springs has been the dominant force in Corn Bowl softball over the past few seasons.

The Panthers rampaged to a conference title, a 35-3 record and a state tournament berth in 2011.

A number of Corn Bowl rivals will be looking to dethrone the Panthers in 2012, but don’t look for Central Springs to concede much.

While Central Springs graduated a substantial load of talent, the cupboard is far from bare for Belinda Nelson, who enters her 12th season as coach.

Bethany Isaacson saw considerable time in the circle and will likely be the top pitcher for the Panthers, although Lexi Korte figures to log a fair amount of innings as well.

Taylor Yezek, Sam Wurtzel and Nicole Young all return as well and will provide some upper-class leadership for the influx of young talent.

The key for Central Springs’ chances to repeat will be the infusion of youngsters, particularly in the outfield.

St. Ansgar was in the middle of the pack a year ago, but the Saints return 10 letterwinners and could challenge for a spot in the upper echelon.

Head coach Katie Nielsen returns the bulk of her infield — including second-team all-conference performer Lindy Mayer — plus a number of players with pitching experience.

Softball enthusiasts understand the value of the catcher, though, and if the Saints have a position where they need someone to step up, it is behind the plate.

Nashua-Plainfield has a lot of similarities with St. Ansgar.

The Huskies return 12 letterwinners, but they will be young as six sophomores and a freshman will vie for time in the lineup.

The battery will largely be in tact with Kesley Peters in the circle and Miranda Wagner behind the plate.

ASON CITY — The Mason City softball team has its third coach in three years.

Brooke Brunsvold coached the Mohawks in the 2010 season.

Barry Andersen was the coach a year ago.

This year, 22-year old Ashley Stout takes over the Mohawk program.

All of the changes haven’t bothered junior shortstop Cortni Rush.

“Really, we’re just here to play softball,” Rush said. “All of our coaches have known what they’re doing.

“They just have a different style of coaching. It doesn’t take very long to get used to it.”

Stout inherits a Mohawk team that was 19-21 a year ago and returns several starters, including its top two pitchers in sophomores Lexy Pederson and Annika Angell.

Stout said the Mohawks are meshing early in the season.

“We’re really starting to get to know one another,” the coach said. “We’re really starting figuring out where girls are comfortable. We’re starting to get the teams figured out.”

Stout was named the Mohawks’ softball coach in August.

Stout, who teaches science at John Adams Middle School, has junior varsity coaching experience at Highland Riverside, where

she played high school softball.

“I guess it’s kind of come sooner than expected,” Stout said of her initial head coaching position. “But the opportunity was there at this point and I knew I had to take it. It felt like the right time.”

Stout, whose team is 2-0 heading into tonight’s home contest against Urbandale, said she sees plenty of talent on this year’s team.

“We have a lot of experience at a lot of the positions,” she said. “They’ve played a lot of travel ball together.”

Other returning starters for the Mohawks are sophomore second baseman Allison Scott and sophomore outfielder Brittani Sanchez.

Pederson was 9-15 with a 3.02 earned run average in 134 1/3 innings pitched last season.

Angell was 10-6 with a 2.50 ERA in 117 2/3 innings pitched.

“They throw really hard and have a lot of control,” Stout said. “They’re both going to be expected to split time for our doubleheaders.

“Each one of them has their strengths. Lexy has a really good curveball and Annika has a really good riseball.”

Angell said she’s ready for her sophomore season “I’ve gotten a lot more comfortable with my pitches,” Angell said. “I feel Lexy and I will be a good duo out there.”

CHARLES CITY — After a stellar 2011 season that saw the Comets finish 34-8 overall and win the Northeast Iowa Conference title with a 16-2 mark in conference play, there’s plenty of experience back for the 2012 season.

Leading the way will be Kate Kloberdanz in the circle.

Last season, Kloberdanz was a first-team all-Northeast Iowa Conference, Iowa Girls Coaches Association Class 3A North district and IGCA Class 3A third-team all-state selection.

She posted a record of 205 with an ERA of 2.44 and batting average against of .162, striking out 152 batters in 1721/3 innings.

Kloberdanz, when called upon at the plate, wasn’t too shabby, either. She batted .357, collecting 10 hits with five runs, one double, one home run and eight RBIs. The Comets also return Micaela Forsyth, Jackie Foster, Kirby Meyer, Ashley Pahnisch, Mara Forsyth, Abby Staudt and Sydney Etherington, who all hit .300 or better last season.

Steph Barry and Meyer also return for the Comets in the circle after posting records of 8-2 and 6-1, respectively.

However, the Comets will need to replace the production of Lisa Berns, Abby Lasher and Morgan Shrader, who combined for 180 hits and 89 RBIs. Berns was a first-team allNortheast Iowa Conference, IGCA Class 3A North district and IGCA Class 3A first-team all-state selection.

She batted .493, collecting 66 hits with 49 runs, 52 RBIs, 15 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and stole 24 bases with an on-base percentage of .556 and slugging percentage of .896.

Meanwhile, Lasher was a first-team all-Northeast Iowa Conference, IGCA Class 3A North district and IGCA Class 3A honorable mention allstate selection.

She batted .490, collecting 70 hits with 49 runs, 14 RBIs, three doubles and one triple, stole 40 bases, had an onbase percentage of .556 and slugging percentage of .896.
