! Class of 2020

We didn’t know. In fact, nobody knew, when the 2019-2020 school year began, that it would be cut short by a pandemic that would cause our schools to shut their doors and send all teachers and students home just after Spring Break to quarantine. A quarantine that would last the remaining school year. The time that is normally given over to saying goodbye to teachers, celebrating with friends and family, and enjoying community events had to be re-imagined and re-engineered. And so they were. Virtual classroom lessons and senior celebrations were created, thanks to passionate school administration and teaching staff, not to mention a good deal of senior ingenuity and determination to connect in new ways. During this challenging time, each school stepped up in a big way to help us put together a tribute to their seniors: running down photos, developing the content and specifics we could use to paint a picture. And all of this work was done on top of everything else they were juggling at the time. So to each of you, thank you for helping get this tribute to press. We couldn’t have done it without your help. I would like to send a special shout out to MHS graphic designer Mary Yazzie, who shared the pandemic graphic with us, and to artist Douglas Miles, who allowed us to use his art with the word graphic inspired by Megan Rapinoe and designed by us. Our tribute is just one of many that will be lasting reminders of this most unusual year and a most exceptional class of seniors. So, while life is never predictable, as this experience has shown us, it is the lessons learned along the way that matter - made better by the presence of family, friends and community. This tribute is for all of you. Linda Gross Publisher of Globe Miami Times

Class of

he 2020 San Carlos High School graduating class is quite special and I have been honored and privileged to work with them for the last three years. The class includes students who aspire to become engineers, scientists, doctors, nurses and teachers. There are so many incredible individuals in this group and I am so proud of them as they progress to the next stage in their bright futures. As a firsthand witness to their enthusiasm, energy and passion I am delighted to celebrate their accomplishments at San Carlos High School. These feats include academic and MISSION STATEMENT WE EXIST TO EDUCATE AND EMPOWER STUDENTS TO BECOME

good role models for the rest of the school and these skills bode well for their future. They are kind, caring, respectful and proactive, engaged learners. The future of these students includes enrolling in four year universities, such as NAU and GCU, and two year colleges, such as EAC and San Carlos Apache College. Still other graduates plan to enlist in the armed services, attend SCTI and join the workforce immediately after graduation. These plans may have been delayed by quarantine, but when we return to normalcy these deferred dreams will be realized with fervor and enthusiasm. The leadership potential for the graduates of our class of 2020 is boundless, thus having a dynamic impact on their families, clans, and the entire San Carlos Apache Tribe. The expectations are high, but I have no doubt that these exceptional young Apache men and women will exceed them and prove to everyone that a graduate of San Carlos High School is up for even the most demanding challenge. Good luck Class of 2020, I love you and will miss you. Susan Poole, Proud Principal San Carlos High School

DEANDRE DUDE: TEAM CAPTAIN Deandre was a true leader, both in his actions and his ideas. He was able to take a complex project with a lot of moving parts, neatly organize it, and drive the team forward until they had the best robot they could muster.

JESSE PATTEN: LEAD PROGRAMMER Jesse was the brains behind the robot’s success. He showed incredible initiative, problem solving, and research skills in order to ensure the robot’s software and electronics worked without a hitch.

ALEXIS PHILLIPS: BUILDER/TEAM GRANDMA Alexis always was the voice of reason for the team. Whether it be speaking up to keep others safe, pointing out a better path forward, or seeking out resources from the school machine shop, the team could always count on Alexis to be a great builder and grandma.

CHRISTIAN BARTLETT: HANDYMAN Whenever the team had an obstacle in the way, Christian could always be counted on to help brush the obstacle aside. He was always ready with a wrench, broom, extra screw, or charger, which made the road easier for the rest of the team.

BRANDON ANDERSON: BUILDER If there was an opportunity to improve the robot, Brandon was right there in the heat of the action. He was always trying new ideas and tinkering until he found the perfect combination of parts.

JASMINE EDWARDS: ENGINEERING NOTEBOOK DOCUMENTATION Every day, Jasmine was ready to work with a pencil in hand. She documented the team’s work on every day of the year, and allowed the team to look back on past successes and failures as they charted their path forward.

Apache Singers Acknowledged in Superintendent’s Statewide Address to the Seniors of 2020 In the Apache Music Appreciation class we graduated four seniors: Josiah Dawahoya, Cole Patten, Q’Rishton Whiterock and Thomas Patten. These young men will be missed by all of our student body, staff and employees. Their singing inspired many, and during the seventh hour and every day it echoed in the hallways of SCHS. We thank them for all their dedication to our school and to the preservation of the sacred songs of the Apache people.

~ THE SUPERINTENDENT SPOTLIGHT AWARD ~ hił Gozhóó is an Apache word that means “I am happy!” In essence, Shił Gozhóó means we are interconnected mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually with beauty and in harmony. Furthermore, our mission at global Nńee.” We also envision “being an effective student focused learning community graduating culturally confident citizens.” Therefore, we strive for balance in all aspects of one’s life by offering the best of both worlds, including enriched academics while being culturally responsive and sensitive to the Apache concepts of Shił Gozhóó. Reaching this state of Shił Gozhóó with our students and staff can many times be difficult in today’s world, especially for Indigenous people who have endured decades of intergenerational trauma, to which, at times, the formal education system based on western education concepts and ideas alone have only added. With the integration of the concepts of Shił Gozhóó, our students have thrived! As one of the few Native American women superintendents in Arizona, I believe it to be very important to recognize students who have reached the milestone of earning their high school graduation despite the challenges stacked against them. Challenges that for many would be too cumbersome to tackle, let alone be able to attend school regularly. Thus the “Superintendent Spotlight Award” is given to a graduating female and male student who have been a San Carlos Unified School District student for all 13 years and have shown resilience in overcoming life challenges through Shił Gozhóó! No doubt this year’s graduating class all have experienced challenging times and have overcome with flying colors! I am super proud of each and every graduate. For the class of 2020 this year’s superintendent spotlight awards go to Tana Kozie and Kijuan Steele. Shił Gozhóó! Dr. Deborah Dennison Superintendent

Dear Seniors, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all the best that life has to offer you, knowing you have already been tested to overcome your last trimester of high school. There are no words to express how much I have missed every one of you during the COVID-19 crisis. This last trimester of school is when we all take the time to celebrate your accomplishments for the last four years. We were unable to have those moments and if I had superpowers, I would grant you the time back, unhampered by the COVID-19 virus, to have you experience the activities that were ripped from your senior year. It is significant that you, the Class of 2020, were born on the heels of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, when America began restricting activities to ensure our freedoms. Now, the present day COVID-19 Pandemic, in your senior year, has restricted our activities, prompting a school closure. But because you are the Class of 2020, you are so resilient, and have already known difficulties beyond measure. I can trust that your futures will have all of you impacting the world in ways that we had never conceived could be done. Class of 2020, the class with perfect vision, go forth and create a ripple in time, conquer the world, and make your goals happen. We will be watching. Principal Armenta P.S. You are my favorite class!

~ ROBOTICS TEAM ~ he Midnight Cicadas, GUSD’s robotics program, has been building and shaping youth robotics teams in K-12 since 2013, when the program was first launched in the school district. The program currently consists of nine competitive teams involving youth ages 5 to 18 and includes several year round classes for grades 6 through 12. This season was one of both great success and obvious disappointment for our robotics teams. Our Lego League and Tech Challenge teams both competed at the state championship level after wins in the regional qualifier circuits. Both our high school and rookie junior high Tech Challenge teams progressed to the playoffs at the Arizona State Championship in Flagstaff. Our high school team 14814 won the Arizona State Skystone FTC 2020 season event, their first ever state win during their three years of competition! Despite the suspension of FRC and FLL Jr. spring competitions due to COVID-19, the Midnight Cicadas were able to put their skill sets to good use and 3D print PPE face shields for our emergency and health workers.

THE FRC TEAM AFTER THEIR WIN AT THE 2019 ARIZONA NORTH REGIONAL COMPETITION

Bradley Pollock and Ricky Das both joined the robotics program during their 8th grade year as members of both the FTC and FRC teams. Bradley has served as the FRC team’s mechanical lead, code lead and team captain and has been on the drive team for the last three years. Nominated in 2018 for the renowned FTC Dean’s List Award, he was also a 2019 FTC Dean’s List international finalist. This spring, Bradley won the AZ FIRST Robotics Steve Sanghi Scholarship. He will be attending ASU this fall.

Digital Communications bids farewell to seniors: Documenting life as a student and covering the news The Globe High School Digital Communications course is a CTE (Career and Technical Education) class which helps prepare our students for careers in journalism. We are proud of our graduates: Evette Nosie, Brianne Hibdon, Ronald Ailak, Courtney Baxter, Katie Boulware, Desiray Purcella, Leticia Nieto and Brianna Perez.

THE 2020 YEARBOOK

It (Covid-19) really disrupted all of our lives by having to move everything around. There are so many changes it’s hard to keep up with everything! – Desiray Purcella, senior with plans to enroll in a nursing program

Despite a pandemic and the deadlines and demands of their senior year, these students were key to putting out the 103rd edition of the GHS yearbook and producing weekly broadcasts through our YouTube channel: https://tinyurl.com/GHS4news, posted every Monday. Brianna Perez, the person behind the camera for our weekly broadcasts, directed the anchors during filming, ran the camera and managed to keep peace and quiet in the newsroom. With skills like that we know she will go far! Both Brianne Perez and Brianne Hibdon competed at the regional conference and were planning to compete at the state level before it was canceled this spring. Our seniors’ accomplishments stand out for their commitment to journalism. It’s been a pleasure working with each of you. I will miss you! Best wishes for a rewarding future where you can dream big! Class of

Dear 2020 Graduates, I’m proud of you and want you to know that you’ll be missed in Miami’s halls. You may recall that we came in together, you arriving as seventh graders just as I was starting as the new principal. We were all a little confused, trying to figure out who was who and where we should be at any particular time. We were all trying on new masks – you had gone from being the big kids in school to suddenly being the little kids in the really big kids’ school, and I was digging to find the strong points in our school that could be used as starting points to improve the education you would receive. It’s easy in small rural schools and communities to focus on the problems, on the resources we don’t have, or on the fact that there aren’t enough good jobs and that too many people drink or use drugs. These are all real problems that can trip us up as individuals and as a community, but these problems don’t define us. These problems are not who we are; they’re just background noise. As the Class of 2020, you didn’t let these things slow you down. You adjusted to your new school and to the new rules and programs we threw at you each year; you grew stronger and faster, earned your way into state playoffs and held the Copper Kettle three of your four years in high school; you worked your way through our beefed-up CTE programs and CVIT classes so you’ll be ready to hold jobs; and, you learned how to behave like adults. You even held yourselves back when kids from across town left their misspelled graffiti on our campus. You still did silly stuff – some I knew about and a lot I probably don’t want to know about – but you mostly learned to stick with the normal teenager stupid stuff and stayed away from the “stoopid” stuff that can really get you hurt or in trouble. As you were growing stronger and smarter and wiser, you helped to change our school for the better. You found masks that fit you – and then you found a different sort of mask this spring – and you helped us leverage great teachers and strong traditions to improve our school. Miami High School is a better place because you spent six years in the building, and I’m grateful for that, because all the kids coming after you will benefit from what you’ve done. Now it’s your turn to go out and improve the world – to educate yourselves, find and hold jobs, raise your own families, defend the Republic. Remember who you are, what you’ve learned, and the importance of Vandals having each others’ backs. The lessons you learn in a small town are like having a spear and a shield out in the larger world, and you’ll be well equipped for success. I’m proud of all of you, and proud that your class is the one I started with. You are true Vandals, so go out in the world and make your mark, and then come home to tell us about it. I love you guys. MHS SKILLSUSA CHAPTER MEMBERS AFTER THEIR 8TH GRADE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE AT MIAMI JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL IN FEBRUARY

he Miami SkillsUSA chapter is bidding farewell to nine of its 14 members, all of whom have just graduated with the Class of 2020: President Alejandro (Alex) Angeles, Vice President Michael Troglia, Treasurer Jayden Goss, and members Danielle Adams, Emilee Harris, Mario Pierce, Janaya Sullivan, Estrella Salazar, and Damian Miranda. These seniors, along with the rest of the chapter, have contributed many volunteer service hours in our community, including time spent with the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, the Dylan Earven Foundation, arranging spirit activities at the high school, and organizing and hosting the chapter’s annual Halloween Trunk or Treat event at the high school.

Alex grow into a leader, guiding our program to connecting with both the community and the student body. Michael came out of his silent shell to help guide the 8th graders during leadership classes. It was a delight to see Jayden grow as a person and become a leader, and watch him expand his knowledge during the Williams workshop. Danielle, Emilee, Janaya, Estrella, and Damian joined for the first time this year, and they really stepped up and became leaders as well, experiencing all the training that SkillsUSA and the Williams Training Camp has to offer in order to do so. All of these students took what they learned and used it to develop their own leadership training for the 8th graders in our school this spring.

Each of my seniors is very special to me. Due to their commitment and energy, they have made Miami SkillsUSA the best CTSO program for which to be an advisor. Most of the seniors joined SkillsUSA their sophomore year, so I got to see them grow into amazing young adults. Being president of the chapter has made

I would like to wish all the seniors a wonderful future. May you always be leaders, because you all have it in you to lead.

~ STREET POETS ~ Since their sophomore year, the Class of 2020 has been spending time with the LA-based group the Street Poets, a non-profit with a mission to save lives, one rhyme at a time. The class of 2020 has now participated in the Street Poets’ classroom writing breakouts, recording sessions and poetry performances for the last three years, learning from adult mentors how to harness their energy as fuel for writing and performing poetry that both captivates and heals.

Sadly, due to COVID-19, we weren’t able to return to Miami for the culminating school-wide student performance we’d planned, but we are grateful that we got to know these remarkable young people before they moved on. Their creativity, imagination and respect for others will serve them and our rapidly changing world well in the years ahead.” –Chris Henrikson, Executive Director, Street Poets Inc.

We made Miami history this year with the appointment of the school’s first state officer for a CTE organization – Madison Palmer was elected as President of the State Ed Rising Organization, becoming directly responsible for the oversight and organization of statewide events. The 2020 seniors involved in both Education Professions and the Early Childhood program will be dearly missed. We wish them the best luck in their future endeavors. Mrs. Oldfield would like to give a special shout out to Obreona Horta, who has chosen to pursue a degree in education.

The seniors of MHS’s Educators Rising Chapter were part of an exciting school year marked with several big events, including the Literacy Lives Event at Chase Field, the Fall Leader Conference, and the state-level competition in March. Our 2020 seniors participated in all of these events; many were involved in all three! We are so proud of Adriana Marinez, Matthew Marin, Estrella Salazar, Danielle Adams, Obreona Horta, and Madison Palmer, who all competed at state this year. Given the opportunity, MHS believes that all these seniors would have passed the state’s completion test this spring.

~COPPER KETTLE~ The Vandals won this year’s rival game against Globe High School in November with a final score of 20-16. Due to that win, the Copper Kettle continues to reside at Miami High School for its second year in a row. The yearly rival game between Miami High School and Globe High School has been an ongoing annual tradition since 1924; the rivalry is one of the oldest in the West. The coveted Copper Kettle has been awarded to the winning team after the annual game since 1947, when the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company first produced the trophy. A string of copper footballs denote each year’s score, so that the trophy becomes a bit heavier with every game. “The seniors worked hard from summer through the fall. The seniors uniquely ranged from 1st year to 4th year lettermen. Regardless of their experience, each and every one of them bought into the coaching philosophy and system and battled every week. They became the first Vandal Senior class in almost 30 years to win the Copper Kettle in back-to-back seasons.” – MHS Football Coach Powell on this year’s season

For a number of these students, attending a four-year university would not be possible without having been granted these awards. The most competitive scholarships received this school year went to our students Danielle Adams, Jayden Goss, and Mycala Stapleton. Danielle was awarded the $20,000 Dell Scholars Scholarship from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, which recognizes students for their unique grit, potential, and ambition in their quest for a college education. Danielle was one of only 500 students selected nationwide from an applicant pool that sees more than 9,000 applicants a year.

A Unique Senior Farewell Amid a Pandemic CLASS OF 2020

SENIORS ADMIRING BANNERS ON THE FENCE OF THE MHS STUDENT PARKING LOT THE WEEK BEFORE GRADUATION

GRADUATE ADAM BEJARANO DELIVERING THE INVOCATION DURING MHS’ 2020 VIRTUAL SENIOR GRADUATION

For years to come, the Class of 2020 will be remembered as the MHS pioneers of the virtual end-of-senior-year experience. The Class of 2020 was the first to finish their senior year classes via remote learning, experience a drive-through diploma pick-up, and take part in a virtual graduation. After a seemingly glorious extended spring break, seniors discovered that the remainder of their classes of their high school career would be conducted online. Talk about stress. Students had to first find access to decent internet and a computer while quarantining, remember old passwords, learn how to “adult” by checking emails regularly, and figure out what on earth their teachers were trying to teach them while only interacting with them via phone calls, emails, and texts, or Zoom or Youtube videos at best. Students’ second semester grades depended on it, and for the class of 2020, these grades had the potential to make or break graduation. Knowing that this year’s graduation would look much different, and that we couldn’t hold our usual awards ceremony, we as a school needed to figure out another way to recognize the Class of 2020’s hard work. Thanks to the seniors’ Gear Up Coordinator Mrs. Noriega, each graduating senior was instead recognized with a large banner that was first displayed at MHS for all to see, and then brought home to display in the front yards of proud family members. Once we knew we wouldn’t have graduates walking across a stage, we had to figure out another way to distribute diplomas to graduates. Mailing these documents is just way too boring; so, like other schools across the nation, we held a diploma drive-through in the staff parking lot. One car was admitted at a time, with unlimited hooting and honking and as many that could fit in both the bed and cab of a pick-up truck permitted.

Class of 2020

BANNERS OF 2020 MHS GRADUATES ON THE FENCE OF THE STUDENT PARKING LOT

Last but not least, we needed a graduation ceremony itself. Waiting for life to return to normal was a gamble; the state’s departments of education and health services advised schools that mass gatherings such as graduations and concerts not be held. So, the Miami Unified Governing Board scheduled a Virtual Vandal Graduation. What exactly that virtual graduation would look like, no one quite knew, but with the handiwork of Mrs. Yazzie, Mrs. Dodd, and Miami’s Out of Focus Film crew, an MHS virtual graduation ceremony was born. On May 29, more than 100 phone, computer and laptop users logged into Zoom to witness Miami’s first ever virtual graduation. Looking ahead, whether or not we will need to hold future MHS senior events in such a unique fashion is unknown. No one yet knows what next year will look like. There is one thing we do know: Class of 2020, you were the first.
