2024 Summer Service Adventures

AND HIGH
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL FOR MIDDLE
SCHOOL STUDENTS

Global Works Experience

For over 34 years, Global Works has been an industry-leader in providing exceptional community service, cultural exchange, adventure travel, and language immersion programs for teens.

Our educational and student-centered approach builds independence, resilience, and leadership skills within participants to foster personal growth. Global Works programs are the bridge for meaningful cultural exchange with people around the world. Global Works has a welldeserved reputation as one of the most professional and well organized student travel operations, with an established culture of safety.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION STATEMENT

Global Works believes that travel is a vehicle for growth and social change. We value a culture of diversity with inclusion of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and socioeconomic status – this starts in our home office and extends to the teachings of our staff and program partners around the world.

Global Works strives to be a team and develop accessible programs representative of the many backgrounds and identities of those we seek to serve.

Achieving these goals requires commitment and focus. We have integrated DEI policies and initiatives into our programs and office operations, which we continue to build upon. Read more about our Policies and Initiatives.

DIRECTORS’ LETTER

Welcome to our 2024 Summer Service Adventures catalog. Not too long ago, we would print and mail out thousands of these catalogs, visit your home, and sit in living rooms showing slideshows to families. Technology has changed, and with it, our modes of communication. It’s easier and faster to communicate than ever before, but these digital connections are falling short, especially for our teens.

Intentional and immersive travel experiences connect us to other cultures and communities in a way that builds empathy and leads to personal growth. These journeys aren’t always the easiest; in fact, our most vivid memories come from the times when we are awakened by a new and fresh experience so impactful, it changes us.

Next summer, we invite you to break your routine, turn off the phone for a bit, and embrace a new place with new people. Being part of a community matters, and we invite you to join ours.

A journey worth taking is one you will remember for the rest of your life.

See you next summer!

Leadership

OUR TRIP LEADERS, THEY’RE INSPIRATIONAL!

With so many returning staff (about 75% each year), we feel our staff leadership is one of our greatest strengths. Global Works hires a diverse group of skilled, knowledgeable, fun-loving adults who organize and lead trips according to high standards of quality, safety, and of course, fun! They are leaders chosen for: experience working with students, flexibility, organization, language skills, cultural competency, a sense of humor, and responsibility. Additionally, the average age of our staff is 28, with a majority of our leaders working as professional educators.

With at least two adult staff on each summer program, we are able to achieve a sensitive awareness of the needs of our participants and partner communities. Most of our programs have an additional, onsite country director to serve as the logistical backup for our groups (while working closely with the Global Works Home Office in Louisville, Colorado). Each of our staff leaders must be certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR and participate in our annual staff training.

Universal Learning Goals

Universal Learning Goals are threads that run through all Global Works programs. They embody Global Works’ aspirations for holistic programming. These goals are non-hierarchical and are rooted in the Global Works mission, vision, and inclusion statement, staff input, and developmental needs of teenagers in today’s world. Before and during programs, Directors and Trip Leaders intentionally map out these goals across the various stages of their program to instill this ideology in all of their participants.

PURPOSE:

Students will discover their North Star- a set of interests and values that inform and give meaning to the next steps in a student’s work, study, and life paths. Students will develop their own sense of purposeful, responsible, and authentic experience.

WONDER/CURIOSITY/INSPIRATION:

Students will cultivate curiosity and a sense of wonder about the natural and human worlds that will inspire them to continue to seek knowledge and understanding through experience. Global Works programs are a gateway.

RESILIENCE AND CONFIDENCE:

Through the right balance of challenge and support, students will develop confidence and resilience to persevere in the face of challenges.

LEADERSHIP:

Students will understand the power they possess to provide an example for others, to lead, to make space for others to lead, and to follow; and to make a difference in their communities.

GLOBAL MINDEDNESS:

Students will gain a broader perspective, unlearn habits of hierarchical thinking when they encounter cultural differences, and understand that though others may see problems differently, they can also be right.

EMOTIONAL AWARENESS AND SELF-REGULATION:

Students will develop greater self-awareness, understand what shapes their expectations, and learn to manage their own emotions. They will learn to prevent emotion from creating unnecessary conflict.

SELF-RELIANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY:

Students will develop skills to solve their own problems constructively, communicate what they need, and take accountability for what they can control.

SUSTAINABILITY/CITIZENSHIP/CONSERVATION ETHIC:

Students will recognize their contributions to a sustainable future, their obligation to live in right relationship with the planet, and the complex change required to balance the needs of diverse stakeholders.

LIVING IN COMMUNITY:

Students will wholeheartedly commit to the Global Works ethic of inclusion, value compromise, practice constructive communication, learn firsthand what it takes to keep a community healthy and strong, and take steps to repair relationships when necessary.
