Looking Forward

O

n a weekend stay this spring — the first in nearly 18 months — our grandson Ollie accompanied my husband and me to the garden center to pick out hosta varieties to plant by our stone wall. That afternoon we walked my flowerbeds and herb gardens, running our hands through rosemary and sage and lavender to take in the delicious scents. The next morning as we wandered the stalls at the outdoor farmers market, ripe with nature’s offerings and crowded with people eager to be out, Ollie, who had just returned to in-person school, said, “Meema, it’s like the whole world is waking up.”

Indeed, the world is awakening, country by country, beginning to bloom as surely as a rose unfurls its petals one by one to greet the generous springtime sun.

And so it seems especially fitting that, in this moment as destinations reopen, we can present to you the 2021 Global City Guidebook, chock-full of ideas and information to inspire you to return to travel. This has long been one of my favorite GT issues, providing a snapshot of each destination and its people. It always reminds me

of just how much of the world I have not explored.

When you are ready to roam and you’re faced with the dilemma of deciding where to go next, start here, with the Global City Guidebook. Our team assembled a collection of destinations near and far, rich in diverse culture, fascinating history, great cuisine and attractions for all ages. Maybe you’ll start closer to home, discovering iconic American cities like Seattle, New York and Chicago or coastal cities like Charleston and Santa Monica. Or will you seek a new perspective farther afield? Get a true change of scenery as you look out from Mount Entoto, the highest point in Addis Ababa, or from Kingdom Centre SkyBridge in Riyadh.

Perhaps, like me, you simply yearn for island time.

I have yet to encounter the unique cultures of the U.S. Virgin Islands or Barbados, and I dream of someday enjoying the tropical treasures of the Cook Islands.

Wherever we decide to go, as we return to discovering the wonders of the wider world, I hope we travel mindfully. Travel can inspire our curiosity, uplift our spirits and spark our empathy. As we emerge from the dormancy of a long, lonely pandemic, most things will not be the same. Better days lie ahead.

In the meantime, let’s travel with gratitude and handle the Earth — and each other — with care.

t’s the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel!

The way I see it, it’s a much-needed refresh.

The Acropolis No visit to Athens is complete without a trip to the Acropolis, the most famous hill in the capital.

This landmark is home to so many significant Greek ruins. From the Parthenon at the summit travelers can view many monuments and enjoy a panorama of the city.

Panathenaic Stadium Although built by the Ancient Greeks, Panathenaic Stadium plays an important part in sports history. It was originally constructed around 300 B.C. and rebuilt in A.D. 144. The stadium hosted several Olympic Games and marks where the Olympic flame begins its journey to each host nation for the modern games.

ntil you visit, you may never know the extent of Buenos Aires’ cosmopolitanism. From design and architecture to technology and banking — and across all the arts — Buenos Aires truly has a global feel that rivals Paris, New York and Tokyo. While it’s on the water, Buenos Aires is not a beach destination like Rio but rather a port city — hence locals are called Porteños and have a zest for life and want to share it with all who visit.

Almost as soon as you enter this beautiful Argentine capital, it becomes obvious just how fantastic this energetic metropolitan city truly is. You’ll likely spend most of your time between upscale, classic Recoleta; chic, eclectic and fashionable Palermo; and the romantic and gentrified San Telmo, where you’ll find a sprawling open-air antique flea market each Sunday. But the Central Business District of La Citi, between the San Nicolás, Montserrat and Retiro neighborhoods, is home to the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange, Argentina’s Central Bank and other financial institutions.

the European influence on the city’s architecture. Waves of immigrants from Spain, Italy and Germany — and what now comprises the world’s sixth-largest Jewish community — all arrived in Buenos Aires in the 19th and 20th centuries, bringing with them design, culture and gastronomy. All over the city their impact can be observed by simply walking around the neighborhoods and looking up at the homes and buildings. You’ll especially see it at Teatro Colón, one of the most important opera houses in the world, where singer Maria Callas famously performed and which offers group tours. At the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, modern and folk art converge in permanent and rotating exhibits. You can experience it in any number of the city’s top spots to watch the romantic, sensual tango shows — and learn a few moves yourself in this, the world’s tango capital. You’ll even encounter it in La Recoleta Cemetery, a neighborhood in its own right where some of the city’s most important residents, including Eva Perón, are buried.

Often noted as a destination catering to all ages and tastes, Tampa, Florida, at the heart of Florida’s Gulf Coast, boasts a sparkling waterfront, world-class cuisine, family fun and the influence of the Cuban culture. GETTING THERE & AROUND

Tampa International Airport, five miles northwest of downtown Tampa, is served by most major airlines.

Yellow Cab, United Cab, Uber and Lyft are available from the airport, as is public bus service, with a stop at the Rental Car Center. Travelers, however, might want to consider renting a car for getting to/from the airport and around Tampa. St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport is also nearby but not as wellserved as TPA. If you’re not driving, Tampa does offer some public service options. In Town Trolley runs north to south every 10 minutes, 6 a.m.–6 p.m. All-day passes are available for downtown’s pirate-themed water taxis, which make 14 stops, including Riverwalk and Channel District. The vintage replica streetcars of the TEC Line Streetcar are modern, with air-conditioning, and are free to ride around downtown, the Channel District and Ybor City.

Visitors to St. John can fly into St. Thomas and then take an inter-island ferry to their destination. A cruise to the U.S.V.I. is an excellent way to get a taste of the islands. Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport lies about 16 miles south of the city.

Trains into the city depart the station on Level 1 in Terminal 1 every hour (about $3, 45 minutes). Hourly CTM buses also make the 45-minute trip from outside Terminal 1 (about $2.25). Taxis, located at Level 0 of the arrivals area, cost about $30. Within the city, local red petit taxis can take a maximum of three passengers and charge a minimum fare; ask the price in advance. You can reach most areas of Casablanca via the city’s modern tramway.
