With the growing e-commerce trend in the Middle East, businesses encounter numerous challenges in maintaining efficient order fulfilment processes. High volumes, super-fast delivery expectations, returns management, smaller order sizes, and so on, all require careful attention and continuous adjustments. However, if you currently do no more than 2,000 sorting per hour and are not sure whether the forecasts of 15,000 sorting per hour will come true in five years’ time, it is better to use robots,” asserted Feenstra. “It is possible to start with a small number of robots, perhaps on a larger field, and add robots every year. Expanding a robotic system is much faster and easier than it is with a traditional sorting system,” he continued

he legacy of the annual, illustrious GWC Forum series by Qatar’s logistics and supply chain colossus continues and it is steadily gaining momentum! This year’s annual two-day GWC Forum event in the Qatari capital Doha follows last year’s forum, titled ‘Ready for the Game’, which attracted more than 800 delegates from 59 countries, including 100 C-suite leaders and more than 150 students. Held on the build up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the event generated extensive media coverage, including more than 200,000 video views across GWC channels. GWC announces spectacular Q3-2023 financials Reports a healthy 12% growth in operating profits GWC (QPSC), Qatar’s top logistics provider, announced its remarkable third quarter financial results for 2023. During the nine-month period ending 30 September 2023 (Q3-2023), the company posted a total revenue of QAR 1,136mn (US$ 312mn) representing a 2% growth YoY, and an operating profit of QAR 248mn (US$ 68.11) reflecting a 12% growth YoY, and a net profit of QAR 168mn (US$ 6.14mn). Earnings per share reached QAR 0.29 for the same period ending 30 September 2023. “This year, GWC Group embarked on an ambitious journey, exploring new markets, and diversifying its services. These strategic moves are reinforcing Qatar’s position as a regional and global logistics and reexport hub, setting the stage for continued growth and innovation,” affirmed Sheikh Abdullah Bin Fahad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al Thani, Chairman, GWC Group. “The unveiling of Phase-2 of GWC Al Wukair Logistics Park, the landmark 1.5 million-square-meter integrated logistics hub, during the third quarter is a major milestone for MSMEs landscape. This aligns with our forward-looking mandate and our commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030,” asserted Ranjeev Menon, Group CEO, GWC.

Strategic plan Menon expressed pride in GWC’s strategic plan and their significant progress in achieving their goals, with a strong emphasis on innovation and a people-centric approach. Alain Kaddoum (AK): AI covers all the algorithmic techniques allowing software to simulate a complex reflection, with a view to offering a user assistance that is at least as efficient as that of a human. We are no strangers to this technology; we regularly experiment with it through applications equipped with user assistance modules integrating AI algorithms. Spam email detection, facial recognition for unlocking smartphones, or automatic photo categorization, along with automatic content proposals by video or music applications are just some of the examples that we encounter daily. The designers of these applications are data scientists. Their goal is to collect and analyse information to transform it into decision-making support tools. Depending on the type of issues to address, the data scientists, architects of AI solutions, will

focus on models of one type or another. Even though all these technologies will have substantial impact on the general improvement of processes in the Supply Chain, it is more interesting to focus on Machine Learning and deep learning issues, which represent most situations currently studied in the industry. Regarding logistics and supply chain management, AI solutions are capable of optimising route planning, demand forecasting, and inventory management. This in turn can result in streamlined operations, reduced costs, and improved customer experiences. Businesses therefore are positioned to benefit from improved efficiency and competitiveness, ensuring prompt deliveries and sustained growth going forward. We are strong believers in the power of AI. Blockchain technologies can support information exchange and supply chain coordination in complex, multi-stakeholder networks. Blockchains can also be used to verify compliance and stop counterfeit products entering the supply chain. Improved speed, efficiency and convenience

Unfortunately, supply chain and healthcare digitization initiatives are usually designed and implemented independently. However, bringing those two sides of the digital equation together could pave the way for a positive change in efficiency, speed and convenience. For example, in hospital

settings, dispensing robots could generate replenishment orders automatically based on real time data on demand for drugs and devices on the ward. The required data already exists in the value chain, but it is distributed across multiple different systems with limited interconnections. Integrating this data into a common platform would allow value chain participants to derive new insights and automate activities to a much larger extent than currently possible.

Data optimization For many Middle East players, the emerging challenge is learning how to use all that data to optimize supply chain performance. Launched on the sidelines of Automechanika Dubai yesterday, the logistics experiential showcase will take place alongside Automechanika Dubai, providing natural synergies between the automotive industry and the various verticals within the logistics sector and capitalising on the UAE’s position as the epicentre of the world’s logistics sector, bridging Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

By investing in facilities and capacities across the Middle East and Africa region, Emerson has enhanced its presence in the communities it serves by supporting national localization initiatives, developing local talent, and providing better value to its customers and stakeholders. The company has also expanded its footprint across the Middle East and Africa region over the past few decades. GSC: How has Emerson fared in the region thus far? WH: Emerson is widely recognized for its presence and impact in the Middle East. She became the first female Vice President and GM for Emerson in MEA. In this role, Widad manages an organization of 120 employees covering sales, service, operations, finance, legal, HR and admin. Widad is also a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Executive Council for Emerson MEA. Before joining Emerson, Widad held various roles in engineering, marketing and sales. WH: To cultivate operational excellence, there are several pivotal areas that need to be addressed: digital transformation, asset performance management (APM), and the cultivation of a collaborative workforce. The digital revolution has reshaped how we approach operations, making it imperative for companies to adopt the latest technological advancements. Leveraging digital tools, like IoT (Internet of Things) sensors and AI-driven analytics, empowers organizations to gain real-time data insights, enabling informed, proactive decision-making – in turn, boosting operational efficiency and HSE performance. GSC: Talk to us about your CSR responsibilities, carbon capture, the energy transition and steps to achieving carbon neutrality? WH: At Emerson, we recognize the growing need for a committed, holistic approach to corporate responsibility to maintain good business practices. Today, national and international oil companies are faced with a very delicate balance between increasing throughput and production in the face of energy security concerns in a dynamic geopolitical environment, while making significant progress toward sustainability goals set forth by regulators and governments. All of this must be done while ensuring the highest levels of efficiency and profitability in line with the interests of stakeholders. Similarly, while businesses invest in new, cleaner energy sources, they must also search for additional complementary ways to cut emissions over the course of the short, medium, and long terms. As a result, it will be easier to measure and detect emissions, operate with more effective combustion techniques, and prevent emissions leaks with improved

equipment and strategies. Today, the most stringent emissions regulations are met or exceeded by improved valve designs, which include highly effective stem sealing systems, higher flow rates, and packing for temperature variations. Advanced real-time monitoring of storage tanks and pressure relief valves also aids in locating and reducing emissions. Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology is also emerging as critical components for the future. We understand that getting to a net zero world will depend on sequestering carbon safely in underground geological formations or capturing it at the point of emission and using it in products. Moreover, Emerson’s software solutions also play a critical role in its environmental sustainability efforts.

‘Greening of Emerson’ enhances its sustainability performance by lowering its emissions profile and maximizing its use of water and energy. As a result, Emerson was recognized by IoT Breakthrough as the ‘Industrial IoT Company of the Year,’ an honour we have received four out of the last five years. Our automation technology and software innovation support our customers in key industries in optimizing their operations for increased productivity, safety, and emissions reduction, while also steering towards their set environmental sustainability goals. GSC: What are your expansion plans for the region and what are the opportunities and challenges for Emerson going forward? WH: The most notable expansion initiative is Emerson’s new facility at King Salman Energy Park (SPARK) in Saudi Arabia. The new facility is positioned to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities in accordance with the Kingdom’s localization initiative, and support the company’s net zero emission goals, making it one of the largest investments in the Middle East and Africa region for the company.

In addition to being in line with the Saudi Arabia 2030 Vision, the move supports Emerson’s efforts to localize the value chain as part of the ‘In Kingdom Total Value Add (iKTVA) initiative. Emerson has also recently signed a strategic agreement with ADNOC Technical Academy, this significant partnership covers various facets of collaboration and support, with the main objective of elevating local talent and capabilities and creating a skilled workforce among young Emiratis, addressing the industry’s rising demand for qualified professionals. GSC: What is your wider vision for Emerson for the region for the short- and long-term futures? Oman and Etihad Rail Company signs MoU with Emirates Steel Arkan Deal to transport raw limestone from Oman to the UAE Oman and Etihad Rail Company (OER), the developer and operator of the UAEOman Rail Network, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emirates Steel Arkan, the UAE’s largest steel and building materials manufacturer, to facilitate the export of raw materials from the Sultanate of Oman to the UAE.

n a strategic and mutually beneficial move, two major Government entities— the Oman and Emirates Rail Company (OER) and Emirates Steel Arkan have inked a key bilateral agreement. Accordingly, under this agreement, OER will provide logistics solutions to manage the transportation of raw limestone, which Emirates Steel Arkan plans to import from Oman to its cement factories in Al Ain, UAE. The MoU was signed by Eng. Ahmed Al Musawa Al Hashemi, CEO, OER, and Eng. Saeed Khalfan Al Ghafri, CEO, Emirates Steel, an Emirates Steel Arkan Company.

Enhancing cross border trade “This agreement represents the vision for this project, which was launched to link the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates and aims to enhance cross-border trade between the two countries, linking centers of manufacturing and production,

and connecting import and export points,” commented Engr. Al Hashemi. “This agreement paves the way for integrated logistics solutions for the transportation of raw materials to and from our cement plant in Al Ain, boosting our operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and reducing environmental impact. Oman and Etihad Rail will provide logistics solutions for Emirates Steel Arkan through annual transportation of 4mn to 6mn tonnes of high-quality raw materials to Al Ain. This ensures Emirates Steel Arkan can produce and export 2-3mn tonnes of finished goods to regional markets each year.

NEWS Tristar wins inaugural global award for ESG in London n Dubai-headquartered Tristar Group was recently recognised as the winner of the first Golden Peacock Global Award for ESG (GPGAESG), at the 2023 Annual London Global Convention of the Institute of Directors, India (IOD). Tristar Group CEO Eugene Mayne received the award from Sir Alok Sharma KCMG MP, President of COP26 and Member of Parliament for Reading West, UK, and Lt. Gen. Surinder Nath, PVSM, AVSM (Retd.), President, IOD. This is the first time IOD has instituted an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) award under its Golden Peacock Awards initiative, after they were first introduced in 1991. Since then, the Golden Peacock has come to be regarded as a benchmark of corporate excellence around the world. In earlier years, Tristar has won four Golden Peacocks for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), two for Occupational Health and Safety, and one

EGME is the exclusive distributor of SANY electric trucks in UAE n Emirates Global Motor Electric (EGME), the UAE-based electric vehicle and energy storage solutions provider, recently signed an agreement with SANY, a Chinese multinational heavy machinery and truck manufacturing company, to obtain exclusive distributorship for the latter’s light and heavy-duty electric trucks. The agreement aims to promote sustainable mobility solutions across the UAE and lay the groundwork for a cleaner mobility sector, it was announced via a press communique. EGME, a member of Al Fahim group, offers complete electric mobility solutions with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility options across the region. The strategic partnership between the two parties will allow EGME to expand their product line and SANY to introduce electric trucks in the UAE, with the first batch of light and heavy-duty electric trucks. Etihad Cargo appoints WFS as its cargo handling partner in the US n Etihad Cargo has appointed Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a member of the SATS Group, as the carrier’s US cargo handling partner to enhance its capabilities in the region. Etihad Cargo has expanded its network with WFS to incorporate all the carrier’s stations in the US. From 3 October, WFS will be Etihad Cargo’s cargo handling partner at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), in addition to providing cargo handling services at John F. DHL to acquire all remaining shares in Danzas AEI Emirates n DHL Global Forwarding (DHL) has signed an agreement to acquire the remaining shares in Danzas AEI Emirates from Investment Trading Group. Both parties have been managing the company through a joint venture since 1995, with Investment Trading Group holding 60% of the shares, according to a press communique. NEWS Drydocks World completes conversion of Tango and Excalibur Vessels n Drydocks World recently announced the successful conversion of two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vessels to boost production off the coast of the Republic of Congo. The deployment of the Tango Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) and Excalibur Floating Storage Unit (FSU) vessels – in collaboration with Antwerpbased Exmar and Italian energy company Eni, marks a significant milestone in the ongoing Eni’s Congo LNG project. The project is a world first, joining two vessels by using a ‘spread mooring’ system designed and patented by Exmar. The newly combined assets complement each other to gather, liquefy, store and offload LNG from Eni’s Marine XII block, situated offshore from Pointe Noire in the Republic of the Congo. Drydocks World carried out the conversion which included the addition of 12 steel mooring foundation structures, totalling more than 4,000 tonnes of

steel. These structures are crucial to the combined spread moored configuration. Remarkably, the conversion was achieved in just five months, with over 2 million man-hours invested and zero Lost Time Incidents (LTI). “This high-profile project, completed

NEWS HRH Crown Prince launches Master Plan for New Abha International Airport n HRH Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, has announced the launch of the master plan for the new Abha International Airport. The new Abha airport aims to embody a consistent architectural identity with the heritage of the Asir region, transforming it into a prominent landmark in the Kingdom. Its terminal area will expand to 65,000sqm as planned to complete the first phase by 2028, compared to the current 10,500sqm of the existing airport. This expansion includes the construction of passenger boarding bridges, self-service facilities for streamlined travel procedures, and highcapacity parking facilities. The design of the new airport will reflect the architectural identity of the Asir region and showcase Saudi culture. This design will offer a distinctive travel experience with high efficiency, ensuring seamless services for visitors and travellers. The airport’s capacity will increase to accommodate over 13mn passengers

annually, a tenfold increase from the current 1.5mn capacity. It will also handle more than 90,000 flights per year, a significant increase from the current 30,000 flights. Additionally, the new airport will feature 20 gates, along with 41 check-in counters with 7 new selfservice check-ins. The new Abha airport is expected to

contribute to enhancing the prominence of the Aseer region as an attractive tourist destination. It will also fulfil Aseer’s development strategy and the aviation strategy that aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 by increasing air connectivity to 250 destinations and transporting 330 million passengers, a press communique concluded.
