Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University Annual Report 2020-21

Seed Grants The Global Sport Institute thrives on interdisciplinary work that brings together scholars from across ASU. Not unlike sport competition itself, it takes a multi-skilled approach to make advances. Within ASU’s vast academic network, we look to partner with those whose work is innately or uniquely tied to sport. Since our first year of programming, we have sought to support researchers whose insights can make a positive impact at the intersection of sport and the arts, technology, community development, race, mental and physical health, performance, sociology, history and engineering. This past year, we took a special look at sex, gender, and sexuality in sport. In exploring these three terms, we consulted with ASU associate professor Marlon Bailey, who explained, “Sport should be opportunity for self-growth, healthy competition, community, and affirmation.” Despite the challenges of current events, Regents Professor and Global Sport scholar Devoney Looser called for action and said, “This is a time for us to work collectively, and individually for our teams and in the world.”
