A Fantastic and Most Memorable Journey Welcome to another edition of Global News and a special edition to commemorate Global Rail’s 15th Anniversary.

It feels like only yesterday when Ivan and I broached the idea to set up our own business, and yet here we are, celebrating 15 years of Global Rail’s success. From our first projects supporting Interserve Rail on the Horsham Resignalling project in the UK and working with Irish Rail in Dublin, we knew we had created something special.

Over time, the Global Rail businesses continued to grow and truly established themselves within a number of industries, whilst delivering a wide range of projects. Relationships with our clients and partners grew stronger and the opportunities presented were born out of trust and confidence in our delivery capabilities.

This is a key factor that we can confirm still exists to this day and a real credit to our people, who ensure that these core principles and values are maintained.

We are so positive about our future and proud to have grown into a leading global organisation; it would be naive to think that Ivan and myself have not faced some difficult challenges and decisions along the way, but these have certainly helped to develop and shape who we are today.

And of course, the success of Global Rail is all down to you – the Global family. This incredible journey could not have been achieved without the dedication, hard work and commitment from each and every one of you – that’s what makes this Company so great and us so proud.

We are immensely proud of the business and in particular the pleasure it has given us to work with each and every one of you. Those encounters have helped us to create one of the best experiences of our lives.

Thank you all sincerely for your contributions to date and helping us nurture and grow our family at the Global Infrastructure Group.

Glasnevin Link Reroutes In 2015 Three Mobile were ordered by the Planning Authority to decommission the Glasnevin SDH Monopole in Dublin. There are 34 links on the tower that needed to be rerouted to different locations and then decommissioned entirely.

GRA Networks have worked closely with the Mosaic Trans Ops team during this continued piece of work.

The works undertaken include: line of sight surveys, installation of patched leads, E1 connections and interconnects for rerouting of traffic.

GRA Networks (Ireland)

Renmore Barracks Tower Build GRA was appointed to install a new mast at Renmore Barracks, Galway, after the previous 65m lattice mast failed its structural analysis test. Kona won the tender for the decommission of this tower, appointing GRA Networks to assemble and install the new 65-metre tower, with works including: 

Assembly of tower sections at ground level.



Erection of the mast using a 100-tonne crane.



Torqueing of flange plate bolts to specification.



Transferring of army dipole antennae from a temporary site onto the new tower.



Installation of a half-inch feeder cable, with cable management, on the tower to army communications room.

Tievenameenta Wind Farm GRA Networks were appointed to install a new 65m mast as part of a new 34.5MW wind farm in Tievenameenta, Co. Tyrone . Works included: 

Movement of tower sections from storage area to mast site by teleporter.



Kildare Blocked LOS The line of sight was being blocked by tree growth. This caused O2/Meteor dropped calls in the Maynooth area. To resolve this we needed to reduce tree top heights beside the existing mast/flood light pole.

We proposed to top a number of trees along a five metre section by 2meters in height.

As instructed, GRA Networks reduced indicated trees height in excess of two meters to clear the line of sight and restoring normal O2/Meteor coverage in the area.

Victory CU Roof & Maintenance Global Rail Services have been awarded the Extension and Renovation of the Progressive Credit Union, Ballymun Rd, Dublin 9.

This project is currently underway and involves constructing a new entrance to the front of the building together with enhancements for fire safety and disabled access to the external areas.

Internally there are further works to enhance the building for fire safety and disabled access together with improving the work environment and the long term maintenance requirements of the building. Works are progressing well and we are on target to get the works completed on time.

Reinstatement of footpaths and carpark surfaces

The works involved safe removal of existing lighting columns and luminaires and overhead cabling. The enabling works are part of a larger accessibility job which GRS have just secured which consists of the supply and installation of a new precast compliant disability ramp into Rathdrum Station, including all associated platform and carpark works. These works are due to commence late September 2016.

Global Rail Services

Global Rail Services recently commenced works at Rathdrum Station on 20th July 2016. The following works were involved in the project:

CCRP Civil Works Package B Global Rail Services commenced this project 27th June 2016. The project comprises a number of areas as summarised below.

The most challenging part of this project for Global Rail Services was removal of the redundant steel gantry. The works took place during full shutdown of the railway. 

Caroline Springs Global Rail Australia are undertaking early services and utility works on behalf of VLine in advance of awarding a main works contract for the construction of Caroline Springs Railway Station. Works are due for completion in July 2016.

Lethbridge Battledeck Job specification was to replace dilapidated battledeck at Lethbridge.

Works included fabricating a new precast battledeck and associated steelwork.

VLine Culvert: Sunshine - Ballarat Line

Project Specification: Detailed design and installation on new 1.5m diameter culvert on the Sunshine to Ballarat Line by means of pipe-jacking on behalf of VLine. Works were completed under full occupation at the end of May.

Job Details: GRA recently undertook the installation of a new culvert under an existing train line at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. The installation of the new culvert had to be carried out in a specific time frame whilst the line was under occupation.

The construction method consisted of auguring a 1350mm diameter bore beneath the train line with the auger bit contained in a steel casing. This is then pulled along by the progress of the auger and is left in place to ensure the bore does not collapse during construction.

Once the bore was completed, concrete culvert sections were jacked into place using the same auguring rig, pushing out the steel casings, leaving the concrete pipes in place.

The programme of works required that the existing culvert be backfilled with concrete prior to preparation for auguring the new culvert. The auguring rig used by Edge underground was delivered to site in sections and assembled on a specially constructed concrete foundation in the week leading up to the job.

Global Rail Australia

The culvert was installed using a mechanical auguring machine supplied and operated by the subcontractor Edge underground.

Auguring began at 6am on Saturday the 25th of May and continued throughout the day until the bore was complete at 10pm. The following day, pipe jacking began at 6am and concluded at 2pm leaving 4 hours before the train line re-opened.

On Monday the 29th of May GRA returned to Bacchus Marsh to install 2 wing walls at each end of the new culvert. The auguring rig was disassembled and the areas around each wing wall was graded to complete the job

East Notts Modular Civils As the East Notts Project now enters into the critical Advanced Level Crossing phase, all emphasis is on achieving and completing as much of the construction works as possible on a modular basis to ensure that the major commissioning phase runs smoothly and to plan.

Global Rail Construction

July and August saw the successful delivery and installation of 7 Si-REB’s (Signalling-island Relocatable Equipment Building) with the final Si-REB installed at Newark Castle.

As the countdown begins to commissioning, the GRCL civils team are on schedule with works being completed to programme.

The 7 Level Crossing’s will be commissioned over 3 stages with stage 1 commencing 17th September at Lowdham and Bleasby.

Completion of Stage 3 is scheduled for 7th November 2016.

Crossrail Gantries A key milestone was met on the Crossrail project recently when we began installation of our first signal gantry which will carry three new signals on the new depot lines in the Ladbrook Grove area.

The team installed 4 helical screwpiles and 2 steel capping plates over four night shifts. Set out and built to Crossrail X09 co-ordinates, the foundations were built within 5mm tolerance.

The superstructure legs, boom and signals have also now been erected. The next challenge is for two cantilever structures to be erected in the coming weeks.

Feltham Area Resignalling Project The Feltham Area Resignalling project took another huge step forward in July with GRCL teams delivering around the clock works in a two-week blockade...and building up a staggering 13,500 man-hours in the process.

The project will see the renewal of the existing signalling, telecoms and power assets covering 80 miles of railway line. As the selected signalling system is new to the UK, a trial area is being constructed on a 6.5 mile branch line between Fulwell and Shepperton. The trial area is planned to be commissioned in March 2017 and GRCL have been tasked with the design and construction of the civil elements of works, completing in September 2016.

The immense period of rain at the end of June tried to cause a problem, but the GRCL teams rallied together to bring the works up to date, in preparation for the 2 week blockade which commenced on Friday 15th July.

August 2001: Global Rail Construction and Global Rail Services were incorporated

Fate brought together Marco Lombardelli and Ivan Holloway in 1997 January 2002: The first projects began.

Horsham Resignalling was the first UK project and cable renewals on the DART route in Ireland for Irish Rail

when Marco joined Finchpalm Ltd and met Ivan. With Marco managing the growth of the signalling division and Ivan responsible for the business contracts they hit it off straight away and worked well together, instantly becoming good friends.

It was a meeting of similar minds and both harboured a desire to start their own business. It was only when the CEO at Finchpalm announced

Great Western Electrification Project Passenger forecasts are pointing to major growth, particularly around London Paddington and Bristol where passenger numbers are predicted to increase by 51% over the next 10 years. To meet these challenges, 13 major engineering projects are planned across the Great Western.

Royal Wootton Bassett ATFS

Auto Transformer Feeding Sites feed electrical power into the overhead line. Power is either taken from the National Grid or via high voltage cables running along the track.

The site presented some challenges, such as major design changes and unforeseen ground conditions, but the GRCL team did a fantastic job ensuring the job was completed on time.

Badminton ATS

Auto Transformer Sites regulate the power along the line. The sites need to be located approximately 10km apart along the track in order to effectively maintain the supply.

All ATS bases, earthing and fencing at Badminton are completed, with ancillary civils commencing shortly.

Little Somerford ATS Ground conditions caused some problems early on in the programme which led to design changes and the added removal of the old platform and construction of a 44metre long retaining wall.

SMOS and AEE bases were installed and the final ATS equipment was lowered into position by a 150 tonne crane in early August.

Banbury - Points system installation Global Rail Construction was tasked with the installation of the Tiefenbach points system - the first of it’s kind in the UK. Here, Global’s points guru Terry Burrows updates us on the progress...

In July, Global Rail Construction went to Banbury Station to be introduced to the new Tiefenbach points system and to plan the installation to the sidings.

The location cabinet had already been built by Global Rail back at Hatfield HQ, so the next step was to run a 27 core cable from this to a cabin which would house a temporary slot panel as an indicator to the signaller for the use of the points from the main line into the sidings. This would allow trains to still run on the main line.

The equipment arrived from Germany, delivered in person by the inventor Mr Rainer Wolber. There was slight apprehension with the new design; there are no stretcher bars, back drive or Roding - which are used on all of our existing point systems.

The unit was fitted to the rails using 2 angled brackets running between both stock rails so the machine mounts the fourfoot. Other brackets are mounted to the left and right switches and connected to the machine using adjustable rods which allows the switch opening to be adjusted with ease.

The same set up is used for the detection of the points when the switch is in the closed position, a lever touches a micro switch fitted in the machine and using the correct gauges, it is adjusted to set up the detection.

The next stage of the project will involve another meeting with Mr. Wolber to discuss the set-up of the back drive.

The new Tiefenbach points machine has received very positive feedback; there is no drilling involved, no heavy parts or a lot of rods - it is very simple to install and a great design.

Global Rail Construction Ltd Awarded Network Rail Principal Contractor’s Licence Global rail Construction has been awarded a full status Network Rail Principal Contractor Licence – a key milestone for the UK railway infrastructure and systems contractor.

This licence provides the company with the opportunity to act directly as a main contractor for Network Rail on the delivery of major railway infrastructure projects across the UK. After successfully being selected through Network Rail’s comprehensive supply chain selection process, and following a rigorous two-stage audit of GRCL’s systems and on site management, the Network Rail Principal

Contractor Licence scheme assessed the competency and application of GRCL’s workforce, operating culture, processes, procedures and HSQE practices, concluding that it is fully assured to deliver works safely, and to the highest possible standard.

Global Rail Construction achieved a provisional licence in 2014, following a rigorous review of its procedures and the success of the works undertaken on a number of projects including the ASDO signalling project for Network Rail’s Wessex route.

Managing Director of Global Rail Construction, Marco Lombardelli, said: “This outstanding achievement is testament to the combined efforts of the whole team since gaining provisional status. Gaining a full Principal Contractor Licence validates Global Rail Construction’s commitment to the control of quality and safety assurance,

and demonstrates a culture of railway excellence that is the very cornerstone of our business.

“These daily practices are part of our company’s ethos and core values and I am delighted with this result as we look to extend our offering into both new and existing rail markets. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank everyone involved in the process. It has taken a remarkable team effort and is acknowledgement of the commitment, determination and ability of our people.”

Global Rail Construction awarded Network Rail Star Award Global Rail Construction Limited has been awarded the Network Rail Star Award for their work sites on the Great Western Electrification Project with an impressive score of 91.6%.

Network Rail’s STAR award programme recognises and rewards sites, work groups or compounds that meet and exceed high levels of health, safety and environmental risk control.

Global Rail Australia granted Commercial Builders Licence Global Rail Australia are delighted to announce the granting of our Commercial Builders licence Medium Rise. The licence which was given to CEO Ivan Holloway, will allow Global Rail Australia to build up to 25 metres in height and undertake bulk excavations up to a depth of 8 metres.

The work permitted additionally includes structural and non-structural fit out work for buildings up to 25 metres in height and also structural landscaping associated with those buildings.

Global Rail Construction reaches final stages of Galvanising Awards GRCL reached the final stages of the Galvanisers Association Galvanising Awards 2016.

The nominated project was Sudforth Lane and Hensall Resignalling in North Yorkshire.

An extension to Hensall platform in association with Resignalling works at Sudforth Lane stretches for approximately 15 route miles.

The final scope of works included a galvanised sub-frame and a 35m extension to Hensall platform. A number of important structures had to be considered including multi-track signal gantries, helical piles foundations and anti-vandal screens that had to meet the approval of English Heritage.

Behind the scenes with….. Donal Kelly Donal Kelly, Mechanical and Electrical Supervisor at Global Rail Services, shares some of his insights...

What project are you working on currently? IESH, M&E Framework, Brake Equipment Overhaul, GSMR Project Why did you choose this profession? I was always interested in electrical work when I was a kid, so I thought the rail industry would be a very interesting place to start... And I’m still here What is your most favourite things about the job? Finishing jobs on target and moving on to the next one, every new project is a learning curve and I get to work with a great bunch of people.

What advice would you give to anyone considering this profession? Make sure you have a great interest in this line of work and prepared to listen and learn.

What do you feel most proud of? Getting through and completing my last job on time always makes me proud.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why? Vegas, to play the world series of poker.

What was your most defining moment in life? Working last night was definitely a defining moment, Anthony Kelly wired up a live fuse board with no mishaps.

How do you spend your free time? With my family What is your greatest strength or weakness? My greatest weakness is that I can’t say NO What is your favourite music? Irish Ballads What is the best compliment you have received? When someone says “I heard Brian McCarthy is qualified”. It was hard work alright...only messing Who do you admire the most in life? My family What is your favourite sport? Horse Racing, GAA, Golf If you won the lottery what would you do? Would you like to learn any new skills? Yes, I’m currently in college at the moment studying electrical engineering. Hopefully this will teach me a skill to get away from all the hardship I encounter in my day to day job (that’s a joke I love it).

Umaira Nawaz, GRCL QSE Assistant, commenced a NEBOSH course (National Examining Board of Occupational Safety & Health) and is hoping to achieve her Level 3 General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

The nationally recognised NEBOSH General Certificate provides an excellent foundation in health and safety for managers, supervisors and people starting out on a career in health and safety. We would like to wish Umaira every success with her studies.

Henry Bonuah, GRCL HSE Manager has been awarded his internal Auditor Certificate: Environmental Management Systems.

The internal EMS Auditor course has been developed to meet the increasing demand for employees with EMS auditing knowledge. The course content is structured so as to meet the principles of ISO 19011 and is of particular use to those responsible for the effectiveness and continual improvement of their organisations EMS.

Nicole Ranger-Gomm, GRCL Accounts Assistant has passed the Association of Accounting Technicians Level 3 and is working towards gaining her Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting.

Richard Horsted, Engineering Design Coordinator is one step closer to his BEng Civil Eng Hons) after passing his Design of Structural Element module with a score of 77%.
