GPNF: Addressing Global Issues with Local Impact Welcome to the Global Physicians Network Founda7on’s Physician Expo, Annual mee7ng and Benefit. We are so privileged and honored to welcome you, physician community leaders, our special guests including Dr. Ram Raju, President and CEO of NYC Health and Hospitals Corp., and Dr. Arunabh Talwar, MD, this evening’s CME presenter. We are grateful to all our honored guests, supporters, donors, sponsors, and exhibitors for joining us this evening and for making this program possible.

Global Physicians Network Founda7on (GPNF) aims to connect physicians and healthcare professionals with each other and the community through service and educa7on. Its mission is: to connect, care and contribute for the wellbeing of the community; and to engage, educate and empower healthcare professionals and the community.

GPNF was created in an effort to address long-­‐standing ques7ons; “With our wonderful diversity and individuality, how can we come together? How can we develop an environment of respect and greater understanding? How can we, as individuals make a difference on monumental global issues affec7ng our communi7es? How can we harness our individuality, energy and resources in order to improve our communi7es? How can we collaborate and support each other in our individual efforts to make a difference?”

GPNF was formed with the belief that, while embracing our individual limita7ons and challenges, with our efforts we can make a posi7ve change in our communi7es. GPNF hopes that small acts of kindness can alter our everyday conversa7ons and can hopefully create a ripple effect to beLer our communi7es. In the past, GPNF volunteers have; mentored youth, volunteered in colleges, schools and community centers, provided free public health talks, par7cipated in health fairs, distributed literature on health issues and provided free mental health services.

GPNF is a diverse volunteer team, with women and people with disabili7es in posi7ons of leadership. It also seeks to provide opportuni7es to empower and develop physician, healthcare professionals and community leaders in groups who are currently underrepresented in roles of leadership in our society. GPNF iden7fies global issues and then seeks to effect change locally. GPNF aims to develop and launch model programs which can be adjusted and implemented locally for the improvement of our communi7es. In addi7on, GPNF is working on iden7fying the needs, desires and skills of its volunteers, and then making available resources and training for volunteers to be able to serve appropriately.

GPNF has iden7fied three mechanisms for fulfilling its mission: service, educa7on and networking.

In the past year, it set goals of holding 4 programs in each category. Through its ‘helping hands’ programs, GPNF iden7fied the issue of homelessness, hunger, health and poverty and created its SAWI (serving always with integrity) project to feed the homeless. It sought to raise understanding and awareness of this issue in our community and to take direct steps to impact this locally. Within the past year, we directly bought, prepared, packed and personally delivered over 1200 food items to the homeless, serving about 301 people in need. We also conducted our annual food drive, collec7ng approximately 100 food items for delivery to a local food pantry. This past winter being one of the severest in New York City; GPNF developed and launched its Coats4kids program through the public schools to address the issue of children going to school without having coats. Although small in scale, by providing free new coats to schoolchildren, this program was able to impact the lives of several families.

GPNF held educa7onal programs for physicians, healthcare professionals and members of the community. With physicians volunteering, talks were held on topics such as Ebola update, travel medicine and lung disease. Understanding the importance of developing cultural connec7ons and collabora7ons to further its mission, GPNF presented a talk on ‘Living History’ along with the Art Exhibit on the 1964 NY World’s Fair. It has developed programs in collabora7on with the Godwin-­‐ Ternbach museum at Queens College, Queens Historical Society and the Queens Memory Project. In partnership with Queens Library, GPNF volunteers will provide free health talks to underserved communi7es including the homebound. Upcoming programs for the community include topics such as Anesthesia and preparing for surgery. For the physician and healthcare professional, accredited CME programs, scholarly ac7vi7es and educa7onal programs on topics of health, prac7ce management and leadership skills are being scheduled.

The GPNF volunteers have been ac7ve in mentoring the youth, college students and residents as well as helping students secure internships. This mentoring program will be formally launched in the upcoming year. In addi7on, GPNF plans to bring its programs of health educa7on, in specific areas where there is need, directly into our schools.

GPNF hopes that in the future its name is synonymous with humble service and empowered educa7on. Its long term vision is to support interna7onal collabora7ons which make a posi7ve difference locally in every community. GPNF is extremely grateful to its volunteers, supporters and well-­‐wishers for their contribu7ons in fulfilling its mission.

RAM RAJU, MD, MBA, FACS, FACHE For YouR INSPIRED LEADERSHIP AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY GPNF TEAM

Ramanathan Raju, MD, MBA, FACS, FACHE President & Chief Executive Officer

Ramanathan (Ram) Raju, MD, MBA, FACS, FACHE is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the largest municipal healthcare system in the nation. Dr. Raju was appointed by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in January 2014 to lead the 37,000 employees of this $7 billion corporation, which includes 11 acute care hospitals, five nursing homes, six large diagnostic and treatment centers, more than 70 community-based health centers, a large home care agency, and one of the New York area's largest providers of government-sponsored health insurance, MetroPlus Health Plan, the plan of choice for nearly half a million New Yorkers. Last year, HHC facilities served 1.4 million New Yorkers -- including more than 475,000 uninsured.

Prior to accepting the role of President and CEO at HHC, Dr. Raju was the Chief Executive Officer for the Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) in Chicago, Illinois. CCHHS is the third largest public health system in the country, overseeing a comprehensive, integrated system of healthcare, comprised of two hospitals; a regional outpatient center; a correctional healthcare facility; an outpatient infectious disease center specializing in the treatment of HIV/AIDS; 16 community clinics and a nationally accredited public health department. During his tenure there, Dr. Raju obtained federal approval for a Section 1115 Medicaid Waiver permitting CCHHS to “early enroll� under the ACA Medicaid expansion, reduced the structural deficit by more than $200M, and gained meaningful designation throughout the health system.

Dr. Raju began his medical career in the United States at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn and went on to serve as the COO and Medical Director at HHC's Coney Island Hospital. Then in 2006, he became the HHC Chief Medical Officer, Corporate Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President. While he served there, HHC continued to climb and reach great heights in quality, patient safety and healthcare data transparency. He was also an integral part of the team that embarked, in 2010, on the HHC restructuring and cost containment plan.

Dr. Raju attended Madras Medical College to earn his medical diploma and his Master of Surgery degree. He underwent further training in England and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Dr. Raju is also a physician executive, having obtained an MBA from the University of Tennessee and CPE from the American College of Physician Executives.

Dr. Raju is the recipient of numerous national recognitions, including being named to lists of the 100 Most Influential Healthcare Leaders in 2014, the 50 most influential Physician Executives in Healthcare in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Top 25 Minority Executives in Health care for 2012 and 2014, all by Modern Healthcare, and Becker’s top 25 Health care executives to follow in Twitter.

He serves on Boards of Directors, including the American Hospital Association, America’s Essential Hospitals (formerly the National Association of Public Hospitals), the Greater New York Hospital Association, and the Healthcare Association of New York State.

A longtime resident of Staten Island, Dr. Raju and his wife, a physician, and have two children.

“Feeding the Homeless” - changing my view on life For the past two GPNF projects to feed the homeless, I have been directly involved in the packaging and distribution of the food. Before this program, I had always wanted to do something good for my city, something that would benefit at least 1 person. I’m happy to say that, due to this program, I have been able to help more people than I ever thought I could help. To my surprise, many of the homeless people we gave food to were very happy and thankful for the food. Many of them had not even eaten proper food, let alone fresh food.

The looks of gratitude on many of these people’s faces made me feel that I was making a difference in the world.

This experience also reminded of the fragility of our current circumstances. When listening to these people and reading their pleas for help, I realized that many of them had once been regular people, just like us. Some of them were veterans, others were people who had simply fallen on hard times. Reflecting on how one’s circumstance can change so drastically, I was given many reminders of how fortunate I was to be living in relative comfort and luxury. One particular example of this reminder came in the form of three people I had served on the last feeding attempt. I had only two bags left to give, and these people were just sitting on cardboard, toting signs that read “Any sign of kindness is appreciated”. These people were no more than 5-6 years older than me, about in their early 20s.

When I gave these people the food I had left, I reflected on my current situation – the great school that I am attending, my incessant love for cricket, my love for and ownership of one of the latest technology, and the fact that I can always count on having a good, nourishing home-cooked meal every morning and night when I’m home. I immediately felt very happy to be where I am now, and felt very sad that those people are where they are now.

This entire ”Feeding the Homeless” experience, besides being something to tell my friends about and something to help others, served as a great reminder of how lucky and fortunate I am, and how grateful I should be to be where I am right now.

SAWI Project:

“Feeding the Homeless” – my first experience GPNF is a program with the main goal being to lessen the problem of hunger in Manhattan. By handing out nutritious lunch bags to the homeless we took the first step in feeding the homeless. Each bag contained a fruit, a drink, a croissant, and hearty snacks.

My first experience with “Feeding the Homeless” took me to the area in and around Penn Station in Manhattan. Our group consisted of seven people including Dr. Sandhya Malhotra and her parents, my dad, my brother, and my mother. I was nervous as I had imagined myself being injured by one of the homeless. I forgot that they were human beings just like me and my brother.

However, with every additional bag that we gave out I began to feel better because the people were very grateful and not violent or scary. Most importantly they did not take us for granted.

The program was very organized and made me feel better because I realized that I was helping those in need.

Kushal Sahabir Grade: 5 (age: 10 years) Mentoring Youth Program:

My Experience As a member of the Global Physicians Network mentoring program, Sandy got me an interview with ITV gold to enter into an internship for my major in mass communications. It was my first real experience in a studio were I saw all the working parts that went into producing a show.

I experienced what it was like to be in a studio where I learned what It was like to produce a live show and all the work that it took to produce a show. I saw and experienced how much work and by how many persons working together it took to produce a single episode of a show. It was a great experience for me and I would like to thank the GPN mentoring program for enabling me to have this wonderful experience.

Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: An Overview

Educational Objectives This CME program is designed to improve competence, performance, and patient care practices by instructing clinicians in the highest quality of care for patients with PAH. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: n Accurately diagnose patients through comprehensive screening and early recognition of symptoms n Evaluate the patient’s condition and prescribe optimal long-term management, including knowing when and how to treat and when to consult with colleagues at an established PAH center

Target Audience This activity has been designed for pulmonologists, cardiologists, rheumatologists, internists, and primary care physicians, as well as nurses, physician assistants, and other allied health professionals who help care for patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).

Accreditation and Credit Designation This live activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Washington University School of Medicine, Continuing Medical Education and the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Washington University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Washington University designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Dr. Arunabh Talwar, MD FCCP Professor of Medicine Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine Director, Pulmonary Hypertension and Advanced Lung Disease Program North Shore University Manhasset, New York

Dr. Talwar’s career over the years has included basic and clinical science research, front line academic practice, and directorship of an advanced lung disease program. This array of experience has prepared him to appreciate and respect many facets of medical, organizational, and public policy issues in health care.

Dr. Talwar is a clinician who likes to take care of patients using his research and clinical knowledge. His specialty is advanced lung disease, patients with interstitial lung disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension who need specialized care. This specialized, targeted care is what he provides in the advanced lung disease program that he has been directing for last 13 years.

Dr. Talwar has an extensive list of publications and is the author of several books. Dr. Talwar also views himself as a clinical scientist. He works on translational research in pulmonary medicine with a focus on pulmonary hypertension and advanced lung disease.

He is an Associate Investigator which a clinical track for the Center for Heart & Lung Research; The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research he has been the recipient of ECRIP award twice . At present, he is also a co-investigator on a National Institutes of Health study entitled MIF-Thyroxine Interactions in the Pathogenesis of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Dr. Talwar’s role in the division of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine is also that of an educator. He has been involved with teaching residents and fellows since he began his career with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. He has also taken active role in the teaching of the medical students, first at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and now at the NS –LIJ Health System. Since 2009 he has actively participated in the development of the curriculum of the Homeostasis Course for the Hofstra School of Medicine.

Delivering member focused, efficient clinical service is an essential priority for his practice. On a daily basis, he understands the challenges of practicing medicine. He is a staunch advocate for his patients and he is an integral part of the lives of his patients. He is committed to advocating for all patients and promoting the cause of their health. He would like to continue his endeavors in teaching, learning and clinical practice of Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in a way that preserves the tradition of compassionate and careful care for the patient with all the complexities of modern healthcare.

Meet the Dahka Band: The Dahka band was formed in 2013 with members from Algeria, Nigeria and Turkey. Their style of music can be described as World Music with a modern approach. They infuse traditional sounds from their respective countries with original beats, inspired by their lives in New York City. GPNF is pleased to welcome; Eli Fola, Fathi Tabouche and Muammer Aryar for this evening’s Benefit.

Drummer and percussionist from Algeria Trained in both classical and contemporary music, Fathi has collaborated on projects ranging from rock and jazz to blues and traditional classical music from Africa, performed with Gypsy Kings, L’orchestre Symphonique, Cesaria Evora, Mory Kante, amd made an African tribute to the legendary Miriam Makeba. His first major breakthrough came after Safy Boutella, one of Algeria’s most renowned musicians, invited Fathi to tour with him. In 2010 Fathi was invited to the United States by the US Embassy to join a group of international musicians on a national tour. The tour made stops in Washington DC, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, Iowa city and New York. Since 2012, Fathi has lived in New York City, where he performs with various bands including Inti and the Moon.

Vocalist, songwriter, and saxophonist from Nigeria He started music at the age of 9, while attending church with his parents in Nigeria where he joined the children church choir, and started learning to play different musical instruments like local African drums, congas, piano, and eventually settling with the saxophone. Eli’s musical influences are church music, Fela Kuti, Orlando Julius, Keziah Jones, Wyclef Jean, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. At age 19, Eli came to New York City to pursue college education in Music. He has performed in corporate and private events, weddings, and several spots in the New York club scene such as Shrine NYC, Arlene’s Grocery, Drom NYC, Parkside Lounge, and even the New York City Subway.
