Partnership Spotlight

Asia University for Women (AUW)

In partnership with ASU, Global Launch has worked closely with the International Rescue Committee and The Welcome to America Project to resettle and support 66 Afghan national women from Asia University for Women, who fled Afghanistan after the government collapsed.

Between January and June 2022, 36 AUW transfer students completed and graduated from the Global Launch English Language Program, fulfilling the English proficiency requirement for Arizona State University admission.

Kyoto Sangyo University

In February 2021, a cohort of 39 students from Kyoto Sangyo University in Japan arrived for the first in-person group program at Global Launch after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. The three-week program focused on English for tourism and business, including guest lectures from the Valley’s business community and hands-on experiences such as a meeting with Phoenix Suns executives and a tour of Phoenix Suns Arena.

English for IT

Through an innovative partnership with English4 IT, Global Launch co-developed a course for professionals in both technical and non-technical business roles, covering specialized vocabulary, key language structures, and soft skills for the tech industry such as career searching and resume pointers.

Istanbul Bilgi University

Bilgi University, an ASU-Cintana Alliance Institution, has worked closely with Global Launch to create online English conversation events between students in Turkey and ELP students in Tempe, AZ. Bilgi students have the option to come to Global Launch to study on campus and fulfill their English requirements for Bilgi University.

Mesa Gateway Aiport

For the first time, Global Launch joined with Mesa Gateway Airport to host 26 Airline Hospitality students from J. F. Oberlin University in Japan as part of a long-standing partnership between ASU and JFO. Along with improving their English language skills, each student volunteered in the ‘Gateway Aviators Volunteer Program’ to practice their new language and hospitality skills with travelers in the airport.

Universidad Autónoma de Baja California

Two cohorts of undergraduate and graduate students with UABC’s School of Odontology, Tijuana campus took part in a program to improve their English for future careers in dentistry, including techniques to communicate with patients and conduct business. The program was so successful that it was revised and expanded for students of nursing at UABC’s Mexicali campus.

After the Afghan women deplaned, it was all smiles from ASU, Wheels Up and Delta Air Lines representatives at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Srinarayana, Sona. “Valley Aviation Community brings Afghan refugees to ASU” Full Circle. (2021).

“It was [challenging] at the beginning. It was challenging meeting people through live stream and feeling that contact of people from all around the world on the screen. But I can say that it was totally enriching all the classes, all the activities. It was very personalized because in each classroom we were we were like ten people maximum. So I feel like it was like VIP classes somehow like that. Everything was perfect. I still talk with some friends from Saudi Arabia. I remember them, Rema and Fatima. I love them.”

“In my first day, I was totally nervous because of the language. I was so worried that my teachers and my classmates made me feel so confident and so comfortable. Global Launch team members volunteers – everyone was so kind with me and they helped me a lot. I’m so grateful for having them in the process.”
