No Business Like Show Business

By Roger Gros

T

hose of us who are in the business of or who once ran trade shows and conferences were thrown for a loop two years ago when the world shut down and events were canceled left and right. For those folks whose livelihood was meetings and conventions, it meant a complete shutdown and re-evaluation of their business strategy. Most jumped quickly to “virtual” conferences and trade shows. The conferences worked well because they did what they were supposed to do. But the trade show element not so much. Connecting exhibitors to buyers proved to be much more difficult in the virtual world. And they both suffered from the same problem: They didn’t produce nearly as much revenue as a real-life meeting or trade show. But there were some lessons learned. Since the conference element did what it was designed to do—disseminate information—it became clear that a “hybrid” element could work. “Virtual” attendees could join live attendees in a session that could add hundreds of people that would be able to actually show up—and they might pay for it! But first we had to get through the hard part. The Indian Gaming Tradeshow was the first to be impacted in 2020. Most of us were preparing to head off to San Diego for our annual meeting (San Diego in March is always awesome). But when the states began reacting to the Covid disease, restrictions were imposed and then the entire event canceled by the state of California just a week before it was to be held. (N)IGA tried to reschedule it several times that year, but it didn’t reappear until July 2021 in Las Vegas, because California would still not allow gatherings of any kind. And while it was a successful trade show given the circumstances, many of us didn’t attend (Vegas in July is horrible). Maybe not so ironically, the Indian Gaming show was the first to come back sans restrictions when it held its 2022 show in Anaheim in March (still not such a bad place). Attendance set a record for the show and exhibitors were back in full force. The traditional networking events and golf tournaments went off without a hitch and the show was deemed a huge success. Other conferences and trade shows have been held since then and attendance was good at most of them. So now we’ve got G2E coming up in October in Las Vegas (best time of year for Vegas!). The AGA and RX made a valiant effort in 2021, and all things considered did a great job. But the lack of international travelers and exhibitors was quite noticeable. And the mask mandate and vaccination requirement didn’t help. But G2E is back this year with no restrictions or mandates, and thank the Lord for that. And we know 4

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

that the other major show for gaming, ICE London, will go on with similar freedoms in February. But what happens after that? For years, the gaming industry has been complaining that there were too many trade shows and conferences. Marketing directors were getting hit up almost daily from a different event asking for sponsorship and exhibitor dollars. And of course when you agree to exhibit, the costs don’t end there. They soar, with design fees for a booth or stand; construction of said stand; costs for drayage from a third-party exhibit company; travel, food and housing expenses for your booth personnel; and not to mention, the “parties” for your clients that can be as reasonable or astronomical as you decide. And now that we do have at least a “hybrid” option, what is really feasible for any supplier? How many is too many? I think we can look at the iGaming and sports betting segment to start. Yes, these are relatively new disciplines for the industry. There’s a lot to learn and not a lot of time to learn it as competition ramps up quickly. Just in the past year, there have been at least three brand new conferences that all offered something interesting but not so different. So far, there has been a divide between trade shows and conferences for iGaming and land-based casinos. But that began to break down years ago at ICE—today the iGaming element is larger than the land-based— and will happen more quickly for G2E and Indian Gaming. So what show will survive? I think we can all agree that G2E, ICE and Indian Gaming aren’t going anywhere. But what about the rest? Both of the groups representing gaming attorneys are at risk. If your target market is only sports betting, that will shrink as the number of competitors shrinks. If you add iGaming to your market, it gives you a little more time, but really, how many shows are necessary in the long run? If you have a niche like the lawyers, or you focus on a single region, it might last. But as markets mature and the industry growth slows to a crawl, how necessary will your show be? So while we welcome back G2E in a big way, we have to wonder as things get back to “normal” how the companies that fund these shows will react when the event is either repetitive or examines topics that are settled for the most part. Good luck to all participants!

Korbi Carrison Event Vice President, G2E, RX

W

hen Korbi Carrison was named by Reed Exhibitions (now RX) as event director of G2E five years ago, she was the first person with gaming experience to take that position. With more than 20 years experience in gaming, now Event Vice President Carrison understands the concerns and issues that exhibitors and attendees bring to G2E. “She speaks our language,” said one major exhibitor. “She knows what we need to get out of a trade show and helps us reach our goals like no one before her.” In her five years with G2E, she has helped to navigate the most disruptive business interruption in modern trade show history. When the 2020 show was canceled, she helped RX partner American Gaming Association to produce a virtual show that made sense for both exhibitors and attendees. When G2E returned last year with major restrictions due to Covid mandates, exhibitors and attendees returned with lower expectations. But 2022 is different. With most Covid protocols set aside, expectations are sky high and Carrison is determined to deliver. She met with GGB Publisher Roger Gros via Zoom in August to explain what to expect at G2E 2022. To hear and view a full podcast of this interview, visit GGBMagazine.com/Progressive-Products-Preview.

GGB: What kind of response are you getting from the attendees and the exhibitors looking forward to this year’s G2E? Carrison: The response has really been great. Everyone is really looking for-

ward to being together again. Looking back over the last couple of years, we were digital in 2020 and we did a hybrid event last year, which was really well received but of course it wasn’t the experience that everyone looks forward to with G2E. This year will be so much more like that experience that everyone knows and loves with G2E. We’re really looking forward to being a global event once again that is able to convene safely. Will there be any Covid restrictions this year?

Just keep in mind that we are staying with the local Covid policies. Right now that means no masks and no verification of vaccinations. Of course, we have to be agile. And if there is some sort of a restriction that would come into place, we’re going to follow that. But right now there are no restrictions in place and we’re back to the way that we are accustomed to G2E being. That doesn’t mean people can’t wear a mask, if they feel more comfortable that way, correct?

Right. It’s all about what you, as an individual, are comfortable with. Certainly, if you would like to wear a mask, we invite you to do so, and we will have masks and hand sanitizer there available for anyone to use, but it’s up to your individual level of comfort. We want everyone to have a great experience at G2E.

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

How many exhibitors are you having this year as compared to the last fully live show in 2019?

We are up to over 300 participating companies, which is a lot more than we had in ’21. And we still have over a month to go. There is so much excitement daily about how companies can participate. So we are really looking forward to a robust show for this year. From what we’re hearing, this should be a record year for online gaming participants.

It definitely is a growing segment. It was growing last year, and even more so this year. We’re seeing growth not only on the expo hall floor with iGaming companies, but across into the education program as well. And they really do come together everywhere you experience G2E, whether it’s in the hallway, meeting up with someone, there are just a lot of new folks who are interested in this segment, that we are certain is going to grow for us and the future. What kind of educational sessions are you offering for iGaming?

There’s a full track on iGaming, so I would encourage anyone to check that out on the website, globalgamingexpo.com. There’s a link under education for the schedule and the sessions. So you can check that out, decide if that’s something that you want to participate in, but yes, definitely a lot of content on iGaming. And it does cross over. It transcends the education program over to all of the G2E experience. How will people use G2E’s interactive tools this year?

The G2E mobile app will be there as it has been in years past. That is something that will really help people to connect with one another and to get the best experience possible out of G2E, whether it’s connecting with another attendee or looking at the recommendations that are served up to you, based on the specifications that you make, when you register for G2E. The app will recommend for you different exhibitors to visit based on your priorities

“One other new thing this year that I encourage everyone to be on the lookout for is a G2E networking lounge. That is something we haven’t done before, but we’ve heard from people in the post-show surveys that everyone wants to connect with one another around topics of interest.”

and even potentially some education sessions that might be interesting to you. So we definitely do encourage the download and use of the G2E mobile app. One other new thing this year that I encourage everyone to be on the lookout for is a G2E networking lounge. That is something we haven’t done before, but we’ve heard from people in the post-show surveys that everyone wants to connect with one another around topics of interest. So we are putting together a space and we’re populating it with different meetups and just different opportunities to come together with people of common interest so attendees can sit down, chat with people and connect with your community. One of the things we always look forward to is the keynote events. And I know G2E likes to add that as a surprise toward the end, but what can you tell us about that for this year?

There will be three keynote addresses this year—one Monday, one Tuesday, one Wednesday—and rest assured they will all offer content that people will be really interested in hearing about, how the industry is growing, the future of the industry and what that means for all different people, different constituencies across the industry. Tribal gaming is always an important element of the show. In the past, it’s been about 40 percent of the attendance. Do you have something planned for this year?

Well, the Indian Gaming Association has long been a strong partner with G2E, and that doesn’t change for this year. We partner together with them to produce a large number of education sessions. They have a full track across three days of different tribal gaming topics that are relevant to folks who work in the tribal gaming space. And even outside of the tribal gaming space, it’s just really great information, and they will be represented on the expo hall floor as well this year. So no question the Indian Gaming Association is a really important partner of G2E, and that relationship will continue. In August, the AGA came out with the nominees for the Gaming Hall of Fame, three terrific candidates who receive their awards at an invitationonly event. How important is that Hall of Fame event?

It’s really critical to the industry. And of course, the American Gaming Association is our partner in G2E. So it it’s really wonderful to be able to look upon the selections of the Gaming Hall of Fame winners and reflect upon all of the contributions that they have made to the industry over the years.

And the candidates are terrific—Gavin Isaacs, who was behind the success of several companies, such as Aristocrat, Shuffle Master and Scientific Games; Mike Rumbolz, who has experience on all sides of the industry, from operator to regulator and manufacturer, where he really elevated Everi. And then of course, Virginia McDowell, the former CEO of Isle of Capri. But even since her retirement she’s making a difference by really getting Global Gaming Women off the ground. GGW is a good partner to G2E.

Global Gaming Women is a great partner with G2E. I don’t want to steal their thunder because they will soon announce the time and location for their annual Kick Up Your Heels fundraiser, and they also will have a networking breakfast in the morning on Thursday, which also people can sign up for. It’s really a wonderful way for everyone, not only women—everyone is welcome—to participate and really lift up women’s voices in the industry. We’ve just seen two spectacular revenue years for the gaming industry—2021 was a record and 2022 is looking to be even greater than that. What does this say about the health of the industry and the importance of G2E to help keep that going?

Well, I think those numbers are a testament to the health and resiliency of the industry. This is a strong industry built by strong people, and G2E is here to be the platform for that. So we’re really excited to once again be the show that everyone looks forward to, and that really creates an experience that is valuable to everyone and helps them reach new heights. Any suggestions for people attending G2E this year?

I can just make one suggestion for everyone who’s prepping to come to G2E. Make sure you do some pre-planning. Make sure you get your badge in advance because no one likes to stand in the line at G2E. Just go on the website, globalgamingexpo.com, get your preregistration all taken care of, check out all the opportunities for special events or education that you might want to participate in, get those things organized on your calendar. If you haven’t made your hotel reservations, the discounts are going away really soon. Do that and you will get the best pricing and the best experience.

Spreading the Sports Maximizing profit with modern sportsbook design By Jess Marquez

N

obody ever said operating a brick-and-mortar casino was a bad way to build big business—once the doors are open and the action starts flowing, expansion and development are just about inevitable, barring nearly anything other than a bona fide pandemic. That being said, it’s never been the easiest business to maintain, because operators’ lists of obligations and competition seem to grow almost daily, and these days, if companies want to offer a comprehensive player experience, that needs to include a bright, well-stocked and state-of-the-art sportsbook (local regulations permitting, of course). In an industry with many trends, the revival and revolution of retail sportsbooks is perhaps chief among them. They have become places to congregate, cheer, eat, drink and hang out, which certainly wasn’t the case even 10 years ago. The landmark Supreme Court decision in May 2018 to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 created an unprecedented opportunity for both tribal and commercial operators across the country to take the old mold of the sportsbook and completely rethink it, and sports fans everywhere have been rejoicing ever since. But in order to make them come, you have to build it first, which takes oodles of planning, compliance and vision. On the surface, it seems simple to set up a few chairs and plug in a few flatscreens, but at their core, casinos are about entertainment, and sportsbooks are no different. Casino patrons are often rigidly categorized by their game of choice, so it should come as no surprise that sports bettors aren’t necessarily looking for the same things as slot lovers and baccarat enthusiasts; they want to feel the energy of the game, and designers need to replicate the sports bar experience on a grander 8

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

scale to convince fans to leave their La-Z-Boy and NFL Sunday Ticket or NBA League Pass behind. Operators have never been more eager to build eye-catching sportsbooks, and in most cases, they’ve never had such blank checks and blank canvases to do so—it’s just a matter of finding the right people to bring these visions to life.

Don’t Bring Your Own Beer Nowadays, casino architects are essentially the world’s best Tetris players, in the sense that they are tasked with maximizing a given space in order to squeeze out as much profit as possible over an extended period of time. Everything must be multi-use and versatile, and when talking about sportsbooks that means one thing above all: the utilization and implementation of food and beverage options. Brett Ewing, principal at Cuningham Group Architects and executive director of its Play studio, has decades of experience helping operators solve the ever-evolving puzzle of making sportsbooks fashionable. For him, they’ve become much more than just “rows of seats and screens”—at this point, “it’s almost turned into theater with the video and the different technical opportunities.” And after all, what is a theater without the

p. 8 sports:Layout 1 9/1/22 9:19 AM Page 10

proper accouterments? What Ewing and others have found is that sportsbooks work better when they are essentially turned into sports bars that also accept wagers. “If it’s a well-designed restaurant food and beverage space, I think you can use it for other events, like get-togethers and parties whether it’s somebody’s anniversary or birthday, things like that,” Ewing says. When you really get down to it, some casino-goers really just want a nice space to hang out, and a sportsbook is often a markedly different environment than other areas of a casino floor, often built with a more down-home, wholesome brand of comfort than can be found elsewhere. “The gathering aspect of it, congregating—I like to use the word congregate—people like to congregate and get together and have fun,” says Ewing. “So it’s a whole different level now, and food and beverage is a huge piece of it.” When compared to other forms of gaming, sports betting has much higher levels of volatility and much lower margins, which is why it makes sense to tether it to other revenue drivers that are more consistent. It’s easier to stomach a tough loss with burgers, beer and guac, and that’s true for both bettors and operators. There’s also a certain communal sense of being in a sportsbook, similar to a busy craps table but magnified about a dozen times. HBG Design is one of the leading casino architecture firms in the country, with a portfolio of projects that spans from New York to Arizona. Practice Leader Nathan Peak understands the importance of getting the atmosphere right, because “betting is often more fun and more appealing to a much broader customer base if it’s a social and communal experience,” he says. “Most often, we find that clients are looking for a way to incorporate the sportsbook into an already-active area of the casino, sometimes to create synergy with an existing adjacent amenity,” says Peak. “This helps build energy into the sports gaming experience and infuse activity into nearby amenities. Rather than locate a vital revenue-generating amenity like the sportsbook in the smoky shadows of the property, we want to make it highly visible. Several of our recent sportsbook concepts integrate sports betting into the center bar or into existing restaurants or into multi-use venues… Think, camaraderie with your friends, big TV screens, multiple games on at once, comfortable chairs, tables and bar seating with great food 10

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

and bar service.” The possibilities have become so vast so quickly that it’s hard for everyone, including the architects, to keep up. For 40 years, retail sportsbooks existed solely in Nevada, and now the sector seems to be expanding monthly, if not weekly. According to the American Gaming Association, brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are live in 28 states, and an additional seven have passed legislation but have yet to launch. Indeed, we’ve reached the point where Iowa, Colorado and Arizona feature more sportsbook options than New Jersey, per Sports Handle. Because of this, firms and operators must tailor their designs to fit the local market as best as possible—Ewing notes that with sportsbooks specifically, an easy way to accomplish this is to tap into local teams and franchises. Cuningham has worked with tribal operators in the Seattle area, and “it’s all about the Seahawks up there for the most part in that region, so you can have these ‘home teams.’ The regional aspect of it, I think is very different today too, since it’s pretty much gone everywhere.” Regardless of where the sportsbook is located, collaboration is crucial, especially in the initial stages of planning and design. For Peak and HBG, the two biggest challenges when starting a new project are understanding the “client’s needs from an operational standpoint” as well as “what their customers desire.” National firms may not be in touch with some of the smaller markets, but “clients understand their customers and markets better than anyone else,” so it’s often best to start at the source to sculpt a blank canvas into a functional, money-making space.

Big Screens Equate to Big Profits It’s nice to think about all the extra features you can add to a sportsbook, but they don’t mean much if the technology isn’t top-notch. In 2022, nearly every residence features a high-definition TV, so companies are tasked with going above and beyond to provide the ultimate viewing experience. Christopher Urhahn, senior project manager at TBE Architects, notes that “today’s sportsbooks are very lively,” not just because of the energetic fans but also because “there’s a lot of technology, they’re bright, because of all the different TV screens and monitors.” The appeal of actually watching the game is still foremost in sportsbook design, and in that way it truly has become similar to theater in a lot of ways, much like Ewing alluded to. This also creates somewhat

of a dilemma with regards to space, because as Urhahn notes, “you need room to sit back and be able to view and take it all in,” and we all know the sinking feeling of walking into a crowded theater with only front-row seating available. For TBE and others, the design process now starts with the technology first, then moves outward. “The technology is really driving the space; it’s not ‘let’s design a space and put technology into it,’” Urhahn says. “It’s about ‘what’s the technology, what are we trying to achieve with that?’ And then we design space along the technology, which a lot of times when spaces are designed is kind of counter, but really the sportsbooks are about the technology and then the design comes based on (that).” Aside from challenges with the space itself, bookmakers must also wrestle with the reality that sports are inherently cyclical, and every night is not going to be a blockbuster. Urhahn notes that sometimes designers have had to come up with ideas to “utilize the space as overflow,” especially in situations where there’s “a stage or concert venue” in the immediate vicinity. Thankfully, however, sports have become such a constant, 24/7 industry that there’s almost always something that operators can throw on the screen, even if it’s low-profile or international. Soccer, rugby, MMA fighting and other events are constantly taking place overseas, usually during the mornings and early afternoons, which are typically considered to be down times for books here in the U.S. “There is always some type of sporting or competitive event happening, which provides continuous opportunities to promote and hold special event nights in the sportsbook, particularly on off nights,” says Peak. And, if worst really does come to worst, operators can always put on sports TV outlets such as ESPN and Fox Sports, in the hopes of convincing stray hotel guests or passersby to stop and watch highlights or talk shows by the bar.

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

One of the newest and fastest-growing trends in sportsbook design has been the proliferation of partnerships between operators and new-school bookmakers such as FanDuel, DraftKings and Barstool Sports. These crossovers are good for bringing customer bases together, without having to do much other than simple branding. Often, these brands bring years of experience and customer loyalty to the table, and all designers have to do is make sure that everything comes together nicely. “We did the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma for the Puyallup Tribe,” says Ewing. “And they brought in MGM as their partner. So with the graphics and some of the signings, that’s very key… There’s some of those branding elements from that partner that have to be addressed. But I don’t think as much, so much they’re going to influence the layout, more of the content that’s put into the space and where it goes.” Some brands, such as Barstool, have a following that goes beyond sports and into pop culture, and that additional bit of influence means a lot to regional operators who might not be able to create the same excitement otherwise. This even applies to international bookmakers as well, who are increasingly searching for new opportunities within the expanding U.S. market as a way to increase traffic around the world. TBE is close to opening a new facility that is a collaboration between a tribal casino and U.K.-based bookmaker Betfred, according to Urhahn. He asserts that the partnership will ultimately “offer a better product to the guest” because well-known bookmakers are often able to “provide the odds and things that maybe your regular casino doesn’t have the ability to do.” In today’s market, bettors want more, faster, and in most cases, the operators and firms who can keep up with those demands will win out. By now, the level of competition to build the biggest and brightest sportsbooks has nearly reached that of the sports they broadcast. It’s a heavyweight fight for certain, and operators and architects are working harder than ever to increase their arsenals—you want food and drinks? Say no more. You want wall-to-wall, movie-quality screens with all the big games? Coming right up. You want a book that’s partnered with your mobile app of choice, with all the latest parlays, props and in-game lines? Step right in. And if you want more on top of that, you certainly won’t have to wait long, because in this industry, profit always breeds innovation.

cres Manufacturing is showcasing Acres Cashless Casino. Powered by Acres’ Foundation technology, Cashless Casino is the industry’s only solution capable of both processing real-time gaming data and conducting cashless transfers to and from any slot machine or table game. Acres’ efforts to innovate solutions that enable a more intuitive adoption of cashless gaming technology set the stage for the option of a completely cashless casino gaming floor within a few years, eliminating cash-handling expenses and driving a better overall player experience. Early deployments of Foundation’s cashless gaming have proven that players increase their play and visitation by more than 20 percent. Casino operators are increasingly expressing wide-scale interest in deploying cashless gaming technology. However, implementing cashless gaming quickly becomes a burdensome, do-it-yourself project for operators as they struggle through the limitations of decades-old legacy casino management system technologies to integrate a payment processor and user interface while accounting for dispute resolution and regulatory compliance. Cashless Casino addresses this challenge by making the rollout incredibly easy and intuitive, as it enables operators to focus on player education and the gaming entertainment experience. Even

Sovereign AXES.ai • Booth 2844

XES.ai has launched a cashless platform designed to provide an easy cashless solution. Too many companies are providing small, unintegrated pieces of the evolving customer cashless experience with separate visions, agendas and technology bases. The lack of integration is causing high friction and low adoption, and defeating the purpose of what cashless is all about. AXES officials note that cashless has many components from bill acceptors to loyalty cards to ATM, kiosk and cashier desks. More importantly, the migration to a mobile app means the ability to greatly increase customer loyalty, engagement and satisfaction. All these companies are looking for data to fuel their own strategies, therefore rendering all pieces of the cashless puzzle a highly competitive and friction-full environment. Sovereign is a cloud-based platform that offers all the traditional functionality of TITO, player tracking, players club, smart card, cashier, ATM, kiosk and more in one integrated, seamless platform and code base. The

16

If you do have an existing casino management system, Sovereign integrates in parallel or in synchronization to ensure customers are happy and loyal. Sovereign is based on virtual server technology. Sovereign is a workflow-based fintech platform that understands a customer’s journey from anonymous to KYC and from low/no recognition to VIP. Sovereign is a platform of fully integrated products with the same code base, so real-time everything is possible. It was created to make the journey to cashless simple, easy and frictionless for the casino and the customer. For more information, visit axesnetwork.com.

Big Mech Bluberi • Booth 2859

tanding over 9 feet tall, Bluberi Gaming’s Big Mech cabinet debuted in 2022 and the latest theme, Fortune’s Forge, showcases content depth for this larger-than-life product line. Big Mech features a traditional pair of three-reel, single-line mechanical slot games, but it’s the etched metal reels and the ability for players to peer directly into the barrel mechanism that delivers an experience that is anything but traditional. Three LCD screens are hidden behind each of the etched reels, offering promising surprises like bonus triggers, wilds or credits. The screens are a modern touch that embodies Big Mech’s balance of the traditional with some on-trend surprises, which Fortune’s Forge leverages with a mix of classic elements (wheel spins, cherry pays) and contemporary effects (voice-overs, cash on reels). Big Mech was designed with high-denomination players in mind, and offers them the chance to finally see the literal inner workings of a slot machine with its transparent reel barrel and stenciled symbols. Now with playerselectable multi-denomination, operators can utilize it as a true high-bet dollar product with a $5 minimum wager or as an aisle and end-cap placement, with a friendly $1.25 entry bet for more impulse play complemented with a “come-hither” bench seat. It’s a true spinning reel product available in Class III and Class II markets to complement Bluberi’s product offerings and aggressive focus in the low-denom video segment. Tablet Taxforms CasinoSoft • Booth 3833

O

ver two years have passed since the beginning of the pandemic, and despite many casinos packed with customers on a busy floor, they are still short-staffed across the board, and all over the country. Slow jackpot payouts, time-sucking inefficient trips back and forth to print tax documents, obtain signatures, pay out customers and file paperwork is no longer a process that casinos can afford to have. CasinoSoft’s Tablet Taxforms have drastically cut down that time, while eliminating some of the manual process. The slot department employee picks up a jackpot on their handheld mobile device, on an iOS or Android-driven application, right at the slot machine, and processes the jackpot, confirms or updates patron’s ID using the tablet’s camera and ability to read the barcode on the back of IDs, and even do TINChecks and update any other patron info. The employee can quickly determine and auto-calculate any taxes to take out, know if a patron is on a banned list, check for any required intercept payments, obtain digital signatures, and email a copy of the patron’s W-2G or send tax documents to any printer on the casino floor if a hard copy is needed—all within the Tablet Taxforms application. Since the patron has already signed for their applicable tax documents, the documents are automatically saved in the patron’s profile and CasinoSoft’s Title 31 system. This includes IDs that are updated with the tablet. The last step is to pay the customer and get the machine quickly back into play. The entire process is complete in under five minutes with pouch pays, and under 10 minutes if picking up the jackpot win from a kiosk or cash dispenser. Some other key features of Tablet Taxforms include shortcuts to do quick TINChecks and process promotional wins. This has been a timesaver for multiple departments to quickly process a promo win for slots, bingo, drawings, etc., right on the tablet. Tablet Taxforms syncs and works seamlessly with CasinoSoft’s Taxforms for Desktop, Title 31 and ADM software modules. and has been quite the hit with customers. nterblock’s Universal Cabinets hold a special place in the company’s line of luxury products. These personalized gaming machines are the result of Interblock’s technological and design progress. In their simplest form, these devices offer a first-class playing experience. Whether placed in the center of a casino floor or making use of a remote area, Universal Cabinets offer a universal answer to all casino questions. The well-accepted Golden Ball game is now also incorporated into the Universal Cabinet offer. Using the Universal Cabinet Vertical Roulette as a base to introduce a new product to the players, a necessary redesign was done to match the overall look with other Golden Ball products. The roulette betting layout is the same as with the any other Golden Ball game—the red betting fields are colored gold. The players place their bets on betting fields and/or on the side bet field. The game starts by them pressing one of the physical buttons on the station. This will finish the player’s betting time and a mechanical display of the roulette wheel will start spinning in the clockwise direction. The ball will spin in the opposite direction. When both the ball and the wheel stop, a result will be declared. Since the mechanical display only displays one ball, the golden ball event will randomly be announced by special lights and sounds after bets have been closed (in the “no more bets” stage). Lights around and inside of the roulette ring as well as the LED armrest will light up in a golden color and a voice will announce the appearance of the golden ball. Unlike with the electromechanical roulette wheels, where each ball has its spinning time, the UC Golden Ball’s game time remains the same as with its predecessor. The RNG, hidden inside the cabinet, grants complete randomness with golden and white ball distributions without interfering with the regular game time. Due to its design, the Universal Cabinet can be assembled and displayed in a straight line, in a round carousel, or back to back using minimal effort and allowing optimal use of any casino space. BLE Mobile I/O JCM Global • Booth 4039

N

ow there’s another convenient way for casino gamers to play thanks to JCM’s new BLE Mobile I/O technology, the latest innovation from the engineers at JCM Global.. BLE is an acronym for “Bluetooth Low Energy,” and the BLE Mobile I/O device is an internal module that enables contactless transactions at any EGM. Installation is simple: the BLE Mobile I/O is plugged into the USB port of JCM’s Peripheral Network Adapter (PNA) unit inside the EGM. Once connected, mobile applications developed to interface with BLE Mobile I/O allow players to use their mobile device to securely identify their EGM location, conduct transactions, receive and act on marketing and promotions, verify their wagering ID, and more. To complete a transaction, information is communicated from the user’s mobile device to the PNA through JCM’s FUZION system. JCM’s BLE Mobile I/O has a wealth of benefits. Because it’s Bluetoothbased, it enables connection with any mobile device, and 2D barcode pairing provides an easy path for installation. Any application can interface with BLE

Mobile I/O through secure APIs, plus applications can notify patrons of available promotions, expiring player funds, or specific events. Additionally, because it’s mobile-based, it allows for location-based services, such as geolocation. The BLE Mobile I/O is system and EGM-agnostic, so it is compatible with any EGM that has JCM’s iVIZION or UBA Pro bill validator, GEN5 printer, and FUZION technology. The BLE Mobile I/O also improves compliance with enhanced KYC and AML capabilities. It allows for easy identity verification for every financial transaction, and any suspicious activity or money laundering activity is easily traced back to any user account. Exponentially increasing the size of the menu and the scale of the betting options which bettors have at their disposal, the power under the hood required to offer this level of combinability across sports and interrelated outcomes—and in such a manner that placing these combinations is intuitive and accessible for the bettor— should not be understated. in key areas such as multi-game capability and paybacks, and will soon be extended to NBA ahead of the new season, offering basketball enthusiasts the same level of product fans in other sports have come to appreciate. To expand on Game Parlay’s capabilities, it’s worth emphasizing how significant the market’s reaction has been to the product. Looking at the previous NFL season, Game Parlay accounted for approximately 25 percent of all pre-game bets during the regular season, rising to a third of pre-game bets in the postseason. Alongside this, 40 percent of regular season Game Parlay bets featured more than one game, rising to 45 percent during the playoffs. During the Super Bowl, pre-game there were more Game Parlay bets placed than moneyline, spread and points combined. Meanwhile, 50 percent of pre-game bettors placed a Game Parlay on the Super Bowl and 31 percent of all pre-game bets were a Game Parlay. For more information, visit kambi.com.

real-life casino experience, with real dealers, streaming 24/7—Live Dealer is where the iGaming and entertainment industries meet. A well-established iGaming vertical across major markets, Live Dealer is still a relatively new proposition in the U.S., offering immense potential for operators. Playtech’s dedicated studios in Michigan and New Jersey are built around its best-in-class technology, creating opportunities to tailor live content both to the local market and individual brands. But as well as leading on technology, Playtech’s mission is to deliver the most innovative content too, including concepts unique to both Playtech and North America. Buffalo Blitz Live Slots – Hosted in studio, Live Slots brings a new “community play” experience to the genre. All players bet on the same spin, creating a sense of both shared engagement and competition, with the dealer interacting with players to build on that excitement, just as in a landbased casino. Buffalo Blitz is one of Playtech’s most successful slots, with the Live version combining the appeal of a proven hit with genuine innovation. Adventures Beyond Wonderland – This interactive gameshow, built around a bespoke revolving studio, and combining live hosting with augmented reality, defies categorization. The game is hosted by dealers in magical costumes who, along with their animated friends—the White Rabbit and Walter the Caterpillar—host three different bonus games.

In Wonderspins, a spin of the White Rabbit’s wheel can trigger multipliers of up to 50X, with the chance of extra spins and multiplier boosts too. In the Magic Dice game, each shake can award a multiplier, up to a potential maximum of 100X. In the Mystery segment, players can choose a special free spin or a pre-determined fixed prize. Everybody’s Jackpot – In this new live slot game, players can win one of two progressive mystery jackpots—the guaranteed Daily Jackpot, and the Grand Jackpot. When a lucky player triggers the jackpot, they win 50 percent of the prize pot, with the other 50 percent shared between the other players. The game also offers four different in-game features—Free Games, Walter’s Bubble Bar, Pick Me Plaza and The Block—delivering on varied, engaging game play and great win potential. The New Normal? Every G2E has been different, and it’s never “normal”

I

f you’ve attended the Global Gaming Expo for any number of years, you know every year has been different. Yes, they all have keynote presentations. They all offer insightful education sessions. They all have great networking opportunities, whether it’s during the day between sessions or on the exhibit floor, or at the evening functions where you can find delish food and drinks, and friends you haven’t seen for a while. This year, lots of attendees and exhibitors are hoping for a return to normal. The last two years have been brutal, and it’s no fun when your routine is interrupted so rudely. But with G2E, what really is normal, after all? Normal might be the celebrities that gather to promote the products. Or the high-profile keynotes that make news and attract attention. Or the packed conference sessions which offer information to improve the way you do your job. Or the acres upon acres of slot machines, table games and related devices that will attract new customers and boost your gaming revenues. 2022 G2E AGA

Proof of Resiliency G2E arrives at a time of record revenue for the industry— Let’s keep it up! By Bill Miller

A

s we approach October, the global gaming community once again turns its attention to the Global Gaming Expo. Last year, we were proud to help lead the charge to bring meetings and conventions back to Las Vegas as one of the city’s first post-pandemic expos. And this year, the American Gaming Association and our partners at RX are thrilled that G2E 2022 (Education: October 10-13 | Expo Hall: October 11-13) is shaping up to be the best G2E yet. This year’s show will reflect the progress the world has made in dealing with Covid-19. The expo floor, conference sessions and networking events will resemble a pre-pandemic atmosphere. We will also see the long-awaited return of G2E’s international crowd thanks to eased travel restrictions to the U.S., putting the “global” back in Global Gaming Expo. G2E 2022 will highlight the incredible progress we have made as an industry in the past year. Through June, AGA’s U.S. Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker shows 2022 revenue is pacing 18 percent ahead of 2021, which was the highest-grossing year ever for the industry. Gaming’s sustained growth through the first half of 2022 is a testament to our innovative offerings—with new and expanding verticals, like sports betting and iGaming, but also with the traditional casino experience, which has continued its record popularity even as competing entertainment choices of all kinds have reopened in full force throughout the country. Across the board, these three sectors are experiencing their best starts to a year ever. While we should remain cognizant of how economic trends and contractions could impact the industry through the rest of the year, our foundation for success is strong, and G2E 2022 will build on this foundation. More than 280 exhibitors are ready to showcase the newest products that will shape the future of the casino floor, advance payments modernization, be the next big thing in sports betting, or make another breakthrough in iGaming. G2E’s education agenda will also drive the industry forward as gaming’s best and brightest share their perspectives on where the industry is and where it is going. Detailed in our education schedule, topics will range from cryptocurrency and finance to tribal gaming, international gaming and everything in between. Speakers will include leading industry executives who will share their perspective on the keynote stage. Each year, three things are guaranteed at G2E: participants will learn more about our industry, make important new connections, and conduct meaningful business. This year will be no different, and the AGA looks forward to hosting you this fall in the heart of the American gaming industry.

“While we should remain cognizant of how economic trends and contractions could impact the industry through the rest of the year, our foundation for success is strong, and G2E 2022 will build on this foundation.” —Bill Miller, President and CEO, American Gaming Association

Q&A Changing Partners 2022 G2E AGEM

The new executive director for the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers has big shoes to fill

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Daron Dorsey, Executive Director, AGEM

By Roger Gros

W

hen Marcus Prater announced his intention to retire from his position as executive director of the Association of Gaming Equipment Manufacturers (AGEM), there was a bit of consternation. After all, Prater had served AGEM ably for 14 years, growing the membership to a high of 190 members (there are still more than 170 members after the pandemic). With the hiring of Tracy Cohen as the European executive director and Connie Jones, who heads the responsible gaming efforts, the influence of the group grew exponentially under Prater’s leadership. The solution, however, was right at hand. As the general counsel for Ainsworth Game Technology, Daron Dorsey had been a member of the AGEM board for several years and was familiar with the policies, procedures and issues that faced the organization going forward. Dorsey spoke with GGB Publisher Roger Gros in June. To hear a full podcast of this interview, visit GGBMagazine.com or ProgressiveProductsPreview.com. GGB: Congratulations for being appointed as AGEM’s executive director. It’s a tough job given the accomplishments of Marcus Prater over the years. Daron Dorsey: Thanks for that. Marcus did a great job for everybody for

“We try to find issues that the industry can always agree about, and then find ways that AGEM can help solve those problems, whether that’s interfacing with a regulatory authority or a legislative authority. This is an industrywide issue, not one company having a particular problem it wants to solve.”

more than a decade, so my job is to pick up on the success that he built, and continue it forward on behalf of the entire supplier sector. Did you lose members during that period? You’ve been in office for a few months now. Has it been drinking from a firehose?

Not quite. Because as you’re aware, I was an officer in my role at Ainsworth Game Technology. But it has been interesting closing a financial year, and starting a new one. You learn a lot about the membership base, because it’s not just the big suppliers; it’s also the suppliers to the suppliers, and the different levels of our members, learning who all the different contact points around the world are. So it’s been busy, but it’s been fun, and I’m excited for where we get to go from here. You were a member of the board when we all went through the pandemic. That was a very difficult period for everybody, but for an organization like AGEM, you had to take into account how your members were being impacted. So to soften the blow you didn’t collect dues for a year, correct?

It was over a year. Yes, correct.

Just a handful. If you could go back to the spring of 2020, nobody really knew what was happening or what 2022 would be like. Some companies recognized that they needed to save money; thousands of dollars here, thousands there may have made a difference. But overall, an overwhelming majority—especially our members on the voting board of directors, member companies which are manufacturers, have the big restricted or non-restricted licenses across the world—all stuck with us. So we’ve paid dues for the ’21 year, and we’re 170-plus strong at this point in time. And you keep adding new members.

We’re trying to find new opportunities, companies and people that want to be affiliated with AGEM, whether that’s professional associations, companies in the interactive gaming space, or sports betting and those types of opportunities. And anybody who wishes to join, they are welcome on the boat with us.

The members of AGEM are very fiercely competitive, as you well know having worked for a few of them in the past. In AGEM, however, they get together for the betterment of the industry. What does it take to continue that level of cooperation between all your members?

AGEM has always had great relationships with the regulators, especially in Nevada. We know that the chairman of the Gaming Control Board regularly addresses AGEM, as well as the leaders of its technology division. Do you have that same relationship around the world, with other regulators?

Everybody has a same common theme, which is, everybody wants to see expansion and continued progress for regulated gaming opportunities around the world. That’s where everybody is. We all have a common thread, and we can figure out ways to work together and solve issues, where we’re not stepping on each other’s toes. If there’s something that’s in Europe that AGEM member companies need to be aware of, we have those relationships there with the European Casino Association (ECA). On responsible gaming issues, we’ve got a great resource with Connie Jones, and she represents our organization very well. She’s got longstanding decades relationships, in the U.S., Canada, and abroad. And Tracy Cohen, who helps us as our representative in Europe, does valuable work. She’s been in the industry for decades, and represents our member companies there. She’s got her ear to the ground, and knows what’s going on and can create opportunities for us to engage and communicate on these issues. So, there are a lot of great people, and I’m excited and I’m looking forward to building on these prior relationships that Marcus had and AGEM had in the past.

We’re working to get there. I was fortunate enough to be a licensee personally, through my prior role, so that’s part of my mission. Now that the world is opening back up in the months and years to come, the goal is to reengage a lot of those relationships on behalf of AGEM, and see how we can help our member companies.

Let’s talk about the responsible gaming. Connie is a terrific resource. But the fact that AGEM has really put its reputation and its funds behind her to battle this important issue in the industry—is that the way you see it?

I think it really takes care of itself in a lot of circumstances. What I mean by that is, yes, everybody’s competitive in a commercial marketplace, because a business opportunity that one company gets, maybe they’re fighting with other member companies for that opportunity. But the privileged license, regulated business environment is the same for everyone. We all hold the same licenses, we confront the same regulatory challenges or issues that confront the industry as a whole. And so I think that’s where everybody can use AGEM and the American Gaming Association as well. We try to find issues that the industry can always agree about, and then find ways that AGEM can help solve those problems, whether that’s interfacing with a regulatory authority or a legislative authority. This is an industrywide issue, not one company having a particular problem it wants to solve.

Everybody’s always interested in gaming expansion, particularly the suppliers. How do you keep track of that around the world?

Since it’s a global, interrelated business, publications like yours are very good to keep us informed. Then again, regulatory conferences, trade industry conferences, those are interfaces where you’re able to have a preview of what’s coming down the road—having an idea of any roadblocks or stumbling blocks that people are confronting. So it’s really about communication. You follow the Mexican situation very closely. What’s happening there?

The industry in Mexico is confronting all the challenges of the new oversight and regulatory regime that’s overseeing gaming there. One item that’s new there is one of our member company representatives for the Mexico subcommittee, Eduardo Álvarez from AGS, has taken that ball from Carlos Carrion at Aristocrat. Like Carlos, he’s got a direct relationship with them. There’s some ongoing efforts to try to get some engagement, almost education opportunities for those new regulators that don’t have any experience with gaming. We want to help them figure out what organizations can help, whether it’s the International Gaming Institute here at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, or the IMGLs or IAGAs of the world, and try to get those resources to those new regulators. A lot of people that don’t have exposure or experience with gaming are the ones that then end up overseeing gaming. So, there’s a lot of learning curve associated with that, and as the member companies, we try to provide that for them.

You’ve mentioned the alphabet soup of gaming organizations— AGA, ECA, IGSA, GGW, IAGA, ICRG, as well as NIGA, which is now IGA. How do you put that all under the same umbrella so that you’re all working together?

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

Yes, Connie understands the commercial issues. These are companies that provide tens of thousands of jobs, and provide lots of direct and indirect economic revenue, while at the same time, we operate in a privileged license/regulated environment, and we need to be doing so in a responsible way. So, she at least has experience in that balanced approach. Remember, gaming, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. It’s a very good thing. It just needs to be done in a responsible manner, and if there are issues or needs fore certain research, certain resources allocated to helping solve or confront some of those issues, we want to seek the industry’s involvement and engagement in helping solve those problems. The AGEM-JCM golf tournament has raised millions of dollars for the International Center for Responsible Gaming. I’m guessing you have a great relationship with their new leader.

Yes, it’s a great organization, and its new President Art Paikowsky is a fundraising whirlwind machine. We’ve had conversations with folks at the ICRG, and it’s great for them to hear that the mission is, “Let’s really separate the wheat from the chaff and identify the issues.” Just because something might have some bad effects or some negative effects on a small basis, let’s then direct the resources into solving and researching those issues. We can’t just create a giant one-size-fits-all approach. Art is putting together a lot of great efforts—whether that’s fundraising, engaging, and bringing new people into ICRG that haven’t been there in the past, from the operator side and from the manufacturer side, and from the academic side.

AGEM has moved into the new UNLV Black Fire center in Las Vegas, which also features many of the gaming companies in that same building. What does that mean to AGEM?

It means we’re growing up. And I think that’s where we’re trying to be. You know, AGEM started a decade and a half ago, with a handful of companies, just trying to have a voice for the supplier industry to not get drowned out by operator-specific issues on gaming. And like I said, my predecessor, they built this thing up to be something that is meaningful and can do a lot of good. Having a new office in such a prominent location is a good for our organization. But more importantly, to be involved in a project that has both UNLV and some of the major gaming companies is truly a step up. Caesars was an original investor in that, and a co-partner in getting that development off the ground. It’s a great synergy for what AGEM wants to be a part of. We support educational initiatives, both at UNLV and other places, and our commercial gaming partners on the outside. And being able to have an office location that spotlights gaming, and where gaming is now, and where gaming can go, that’s the perfect place for AGEM to be, and to build its future in the next several years. Sometimes there’s not agreement between the suppliers and the operators—for example, in the states where they want to introduce the slot routes, things of that nature which may compete with the casinos. How would you handle something like that?

At AGEM we try to take a collaborative, cohesive approach. And if there’s consensus on a particular issue, that’s where AGEM wants to get involved. But if there are situations where for our member companies themselves there’s not agreement, that’s an area where AGEM will simply be agnostic; we’re going to be Switzerland, because that’s a competitive issue between our members, and we try not to get in the middle of that. So, it’s either we want to advocate on behalf of everyone, or we want to let the marketplace decide what the ultimate outcome is.

So, we’re excited, and we hear that it’s going to be another successful year. It’s trending in the right direction. From AGEM’s perspective, we just want to be there to support the AGA and the show operator, so that’s as successful as possible. And on a personal level, I live in Las Vegas, and events like this are great for the Las Vegas community, because a lot of people from a lot of different places come here and get to experience all the good of Las Vegas. Where would you like AGEM to be in the next few years? What kind of goals have you set for yourself?

We want to continue on the course that we’re on. We’ve got a great foundation in building that. I think what would be a good opportunity for AGEM is when there will be new emerging markets—whether that’s domestic in the U.S., or possibly some other international markets—AGEM can be there on behalf of the supplier sector to advocate on the supplier-specific issues, whether that’s technology standards, regulatory standards... We’re different than operators; our technology companies, and supplier companies, they operate everywhere. They’re licensed in every jurisdiction around the globe, because they supply customers of all shapes and sizes, in the regulated gaming space. The supplier sector has a really good handle on what those issues are, and some of the best practices, and how they can be improved. We’d like to see AGEM have a seat at the table, and to be able to help as those new markets come to pass.

AGEM and the AGA have had a good relationship down through the years, and the relationship extends to G2E. It’s an exciting time for the industry with the show back in full force. What plans do you have for G2E this year?

I think that’s the expectation: that it’s going to be a little bit closer to what “normal” is, and we’re excited for that, because we really have a vested relationship with the AGA and RX on that show. And again, it’s another showcase to show the world that the gaming world has come to pass, another step towards getting back to 2019/2018, or pre-pandemic levels. Because as last year was successful, it wasn’t quite full, because you still had international travel a little bit impacted. Hopefully we’re a little closer to where those doors are opened up further, for a lot of the participants to be there. 2022 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW P3

The Race for Cashless Supremacy Heavy hitters prepare to unveil cashless innovation at G2E By Dave Bontempo

T

he next cash cow in the gaming industry may well be… cashless. This dynamic industry sector sparks optimism for vendors and operators alike, who seek to enhance both bottom lines and customer satisfaction with this prominent, cutting-edge niche. Technology advancements drive the innovation that helps the major stakeholders unclog the congestion of signup and collections lines. Their race to bring enhancements to the fingertips of gamblers fuels new products and plans, all of which will be on display at G2E 2022. Let’s take a look at some of the latest advancements from the leading figures in today’s cashless market:

IGT: Maximizing the Resort Wallet “IGT has been the leader of cashless innovation since TITO in late 1990s and continued to lead when we introduced our Resort Wallet solution,” says Ryan Reddy, senior vice president of global product marketing and payments for IGT. “The new era of cashless is about enabling players to fund their Resort Wallet with external funding methods. IGT’s solution for this is our awardwinning solution which combines IGTPay with Resort Wallet. There is a tremendous amount of interest, and we expect a significant amount of growth in this area via casino adoption and player adoption.” At G2E, the company plans to unveil a major showcase involving these products, along with related features in its IGT Advantage casino management suite. IGT’s systems team will demonstrate the company’s awardwinning Resort Wallet with IGTPay cashless gaming solution and how it can integrate into point-of-sale systems for enterprise-wide use. The company also will highlight Resort Wallet’s integration with Marker Trax casino marker technology. As modules of the IGT Advantage casino management system, the fully integrated, turnkey cashless gaming solution generates a range of demonstrable benefits for both operators and players, Reddy indicates. “Prior to land-based casinos adopting cashless gaming, IGT was providing cashless payment technologies and services to iGaming, lottery, iLottery and sports betting operators across the globe,” he asserts. “In fact, last year we hit the $1 billion milestone for transactions processed in the U.S. 60

since 2018 across our payments solutions for clients.” Reddy says Resort Wallet and IGT Pay offer players a variety of advantages. “Besides giving players added choice and convenience for how they fund play, IGT’s cashless solution affords players a range of security and safety-enhancing features,” Reddy says. “Additionally, a player’s virtual wallet sits within a PIN-protected Cashless Wagering Account on a smartphone mobile app which has many proven, embedded controls including face and fingerprint biometrics, and multiple password controls. As another security measure, patrons cannot create Cashless Wagering Accounts without meeting verification of identification requirements.” IGT’s Resort Wallet and IGTPay systems also have many embedded responsible gaming controls that can be made available to players. Such features include daily deposit limits, maximum limits for their Resort Wallet balance and a module that alerts players based upon individual budgeting thresholds. The Resort Wallet-IGTPay combination has been an integral part of the company’s product rollout amid major industry transformation. Whereas TITO was a technological and behavioral shift specific to the

gaming industry, the expansion of mobile convenience apps such as IGT’s Resort Wallet and IGTPay is part of a global transformation that extends far beyond the footprint of a casino. “We have been experiencing this growth in technology adoption for decades, but the pandemic and consumer adoption of cashless solutions generally have significantly accelerated the cashless gaming trend, and operators quickly became interested in IGT cashless gaming solutions,” Reddy says. “Cashless gaming is just one of many ways that operators can offer their patrons an attractive, future-forward experience that many guests have come to expect in retail and entertainment environments. Cashless is no longer an aspiration of the future; it is here, slot players are using it, and it is helping our customers achieve their goals.” For operators who are not ready to take the full leap into cashless gaming with external funding, IGT offers “Carded Cashless” and “Cardless Cashless” deployment options of Resort Wallet, Reddy indicates. Guests at a casino with a Carded Cashless solution can use a casinobranded loyalty card. Players load cash into a secure Cashless Wagering Account from either the casino cashier, kiosk or any slot machine, and access those funds from any slot machine, electronic table game or kiosk using the card. At casinos with Cardless Cashless deployments, players can use an app on a mobile device to access a Cashless Wagering Account, and load cash into the account from either the casino cashier, kiosk or a slot machine, then tap their smartphone on a slot machine or table game to card in, he says. They can then transfer funds between slot machines onsite, as well as between a casino’s sister properties.

Acres: Foundation of a New Era “Cashless is in the ‘Prove It’ era,’” says Noah Acres of Acres Manufacturing. “A few pioneering operators have rolled out cashless and the rest of the industry is eagerly watching to see if the technology functions as advertised and if it delivers new profits. Some solutions will fail and be forgotten, while others will succeed and become widely implemented or even become the industry standard.” Acres Manufacturing just released Cashless Casino, which Acres says is the industry’s best breed of cashless solution. It is an app that works with the company’s Foundation casino management system. “We’ve installed more cashless gaming terminals in 2022 than all other systems providers combined,” Acres says. “At this year’s G2E we’re going to be showcasing how the loyalty and bonusing experience can be integrated with a cashless app.” The application runs on Acres Manufacturing’s Foundation system, but casinos can continue using their existing CMS from Aristocrat, IGT, Konami or Light & Wonder, among others. Acres also touts Double Jackpot Time, a mobile bonus that players earn and choose to redeem via their mobile app. When the player pushes the Double Jackpot Time button during a live gaming session, all pays are doubled during the bonus round.

“Double Jackpot Time is thrilling to players while profitable for casinos,” he asserts. “Our objective is to produce revenue to the casino. Players will spend to earn Double Jackpot Time and continue their spend during the bonus period, but get enough fun and excitement in return to keep them coming back for more. This is directly counter to existing casino rewards, which are mainly non-revenue producing gifts like free play.” Casinos want to wean their players off the free play addiction, Acres believes. Free play is expensive and quickly becomes an entitlement, which can become a real headache for operators. The online market brings a unique element to all industry niches, including cashless. Patrons can play numerous games at their fingertips without having to travel to, park and walk through a brick-and-mortar facility. Operators and vendors want to bring the best in both of those worlds together. “The online experience is personalized and delivered in real time,” Acres says. “Amazon, Facebook, Google and even online casinos are constantly analyzing your behavior to identify how to increase your engagement and spend. Everything we create is designed to bring the online experience to the bricksand-mortar casino.“ Acres believes that cashless should be one part of a unified player experience. “When casino players use a cashless app, the relationship never ends. Cashless gaming systems that do nothing but move money to the game will have low player adaptation. We’re focused on using the loyalty and entertainment elements.”

Aristocrat: Advancing the Oasis Brand Aristocrat believes digitization of the gaming experience through mobile devices will play a key role in how the industry progresses in the near and long term. What excites Aristocrat leaders about mobile apps is that they are the centerpiece of convergence in Aristocrat’s land-based and online real-money gaming vision of the future. Digitization in the land-based space converges with online gaming apps in a very interesting way for players to have new ways to engage with the operator’s brands. Aristocrat’s Our Oasis Digital Wallet enables players to seamlessly experience online and land-based entertainment from a central funds location. Nearly 17,000 land-based devices and counting are connected to the Oasis Digital Wallet, which is a part of the company’s Oasis casino management system offering, officials say. Oasis has stayed true to the company’s open architecture structure and has created a vast network of certified funding partners. This network ensures casino operators can select their preferred funding partner in their digital and cashless strategy. That’s a big difference for operators, because it allows them flexibility while also encouraging competition among funders to provide the best service and rates, officials say. Aristocrat officials consider this sector an exciting part of gaming’s future. At G2E, the company will demonstrate how its Digital Wallet is providing flex2022 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW P3

ibility and convergence opportunities to create the best choice for operators. Players can have a completely digital experience, in which they can fund their gaming wallet and game play through the app, or load cash at the cage or game level. Once the wallet is funded, the player can download credits to the slot by using the mobile wallet feature through PlayerMax, or the casino’s preferred concierge-style app. Operators have many choices on implementing their cashless strategy. They can engage with their funding partner of choice, then select their mobile concierge platform of choice. Finally, they can choose if they want nCompass only, or would like to have an elevated, truly cashless, contactless experience by implementing Mobile nCompass.

Marker Trax : A Credit to Cashless Marker Trax officials consider this an exciting gaming era. They believe the industry has not enjoyed much conscious, deliberate innovation since the advent of TITO. But now everything has kicked into high gear, in their estimation due to the rise of cashless technology. The technology is progressing at an incredible rate, and they expect Marker Trax to be a major player. The company believes that most other gaming products, regardless of their sector of the industry, target primarily either the end user or the operator. They say Marker Trax (which is the name of both the company and the product) addresses the needs and concerns of both, through a cashless casino marker system that is both convenient for the player and wholly secure for the operator. On the player side, the company tries to get players right to their favorite games. After completing the enrollment process on the convenient mobile app, funds are immediately available for download to the player’s machine. Most players can sign up, get approved, and be back at their games within 10 minutes. It’s a completely cashless solution. The marker is loaded directly into the player’s account via the resort player’s card, so all they have to do is insert their card and play. On the operator side, Marker Trax significantly reduces the inherent business risks of issuing traditional markers. Rather than waiting for the player to pay the marker back in person, Marker Trax credit lines are paid back as soon as the player pushes the cash-out button on their machine, officials say. This reduced risk, combined with requiring lower overhead costs than traditional, multi-step approval processes, also opens up a brand new customer base to casino credit. With less risk overall, operators can offer credit to more players. The company considers this an important consideration, estimating that upwards of 15 percent of all casino drop comes by way of markers. Occupying such a large segment of the total money being spent, it was absolutely fertile ground for innovation and, locally speaking, credit drives business on the Strip—some properties see upwards of 50 percent of their gross gaming revenue from credit. Marker Trax also sees a connection between TITO and cashless as industry advancements. Its officials believe people see TITO as a massive convenience over the old coin-in/coin-out process, but notes that the innovation was also designed to maximize a player’s time on the machine, benefiting the operator. Marker Trax says the cashless realm and its product is different because it is designed to benefit both sides. Cashless systems ideally produce higher profits 62

for operators, but they enhance the player experience with a system more convenient and secure than dealing with cash. The company has big plans for the big stage of G2E, as it will unveil a new level of payment efficiency with KOIN Mobile, LLC. KOIN combines all the traditional advantages of a digital wallet with the added benefits of being a fully integrated financial network. This next-generation cashless payment network will show operators how cashless can and should be utilized to transform gaming, the company says.

Axes: Awaiting the G2E Stage “We are in the ‘dazed and confused’ era of cashless,” according to Earle G. Hall, CEO of Axes.ai. “Ignorance, misinformation, and fake news are poisoning the most important quantum leap in the history of land-based gaming,” he asserts. “Cashless reminds me of blockchain. It has been marketed and integrated all wrong.” Hall says Axes is the only true cashless company in the land-based gaming industry, and the company was created to do just that. Axes will correct the cashless failure curve, and G2E is the launch of its offensive, centered around three core products: • Its Go Cashless Platform that integrates all types of cashless • Its Captivate & Engage Platform that drives player loyalty • Its Business Intelligence Platform that feeds real-time information to everything the company offers. “G2E is a hallmark year for Axes,” Hall says. “After 10 years of developing and deploying parts of its products, technology, and platform, we will be demonstrating at G2E the entire platform for the first time. ” Here is how Hall breaks down what Axes will show: Go Cashless - Open & Closed Loop Full-Service Platform

The platform will be demonstrating two main processes:

1. Seamless open-to-closed and closed-to-open loop transactions with real-time bank account opening and cash transfers directly to the machine and back to the bank account, including all KYC and client onboarding.

2. Integration between all cashless products such as e-wallet, smart card, TITO, cashier desk and kiosks. Captivate & Engage - Player Engagement Platform

According to Hall, cashless is 100 percent dependent upon how to captivate and engage clients to give them the motivation to migrate to cashless. The company will be demonstrating: • Real-Time Promotions and Rewards • Fully customizable Player’s Club Engine • Dynamic Research and Extensive Criteria Marketing Campaign Engine • Mobile Gamification Engine in the Player’s App • Point of Sale Integration for promotions, rewards and player’s club Business Intelligence Platform

One of Axes’ key strengths is fully integrated, real-time information for everything happening on a casino floor. Some of the things the company will be showing include: Standard and on-the-fly reports with real-time information

• Automated reporting that can be scheduled and sent to anyone at anytime • Custom reports from “Wizard” that can handle up to 100 separate criteria

• Player journey and player value reporting • Player behavior and stickiness reporting • Machine performance and machine value reporting G2E also is the debut of the company’s Digital Out of Home (DooH) Realtime Media and Ads Platform. This real-time ad management platform is connected in real time with ad buyers from all over the world to capture the untapped value of media at a gaming machine.

Global Payments: The VIP Realm Christopher Justice, CEO of Global Payments, believes the cashless realm needs to continue its steady ascent. “Cashless payments in the gaming industry are still a relatively new phenomenon,” he says. “Just a few years ago, the idea of using a mobile device to fund wagering was unheard of. However, we are beginning to see cashless payments for gaming grow more sophisticated and catch up to the rest of the payments industry.” The shift to cashless payments has made casino gaming more accessible to a broader group of people, he adds. People are less likely to carry around large amounts of cash and more likely to pay for things virtually, so casinos that offer cashless payments are more familiar to more people. Because it makes commercial gaming available via the internet, where it is legalized, new funding methods have been introduced. “iGaming was one factor that bridged the gap between old-fashioned casino gaming and cutting-edge digital payments,” Justice says. “Ideally, iGaming payments mirror other online transactions, leveraging digital technology for unparalleled convenience. Online payment solutions are not limited to iGaming. As online gaming becomes more popular, patrons may expect that same payments experience at in-person casinos.” At G2E, Global Payments will present its innovative solutions within VIP Preferred , such as VIP Mobility, VIP Financial Center and others. “VIP Preferred is our industry-standard e-check network,” says Justice. “VIP Preferred connects patrons with more than 400 online and in-person gaming institutions. It is the fastest, safest payments solution for the gaming industry, enabling quick and easy funding.” Justice says VIP Mobility is the industry’s first mobile solution enabling true cashless gaming. It allows patrons to fund their favorite games and pay for other amenities around the resort on their mobile device. VIP Mobility allows patrons to scan their favorite slot or table game using a QR code. They can then fund their games with their VIP Preferred account, all while having full control of their spending, right from their smartphone device. VIP Financial Center is Global Payments’ all-in-one self-service solution, complete with self-service TITO ticket redemption, bill breaking, VIP Preferred e-check, ATM and cash advance capabilities, according to Justice. VIP Financial Center is a full-service kiosk solution. Patrons need only select which service they need, whether it be entering their TITO tickets, accessing their VIP Pre64

ferred account or simply getting cash. “Our products utilize Global Payments’ e-check offering, Choice4,” he adds. “Choice4 allows clients to extend e-check settlement by seven, 14, 21 or 28 days. Through Choice4, Global Payments offers the highest limits in the industry by underwriting the risk for those transactions in order to protect the casinos.” VIP Preferred makes funding simple and straightforward, he says. VIP Mobility gives patrons the same payments experience they have come to expect in all other aspects of life. It’s also an all-in-one cashless funding solution. Patrons can use VIP Mobility to pay at bars, restaurants and other locations around the resort. VIP Financial Center allows patrons to access the services they need without having to wait in line at the cage. It is a complete payment ecosystem for the gaming industry.

Flexia: Eliminating Barriers for Entry Flexia CEO Craig Libson says the company will showcase the Flexia Cashless app with a multi-account Flexia Mastercard (digital or physical) at G2E. “We’ll also highlight the Flexia Platform, which bridges the closed-loop gaming platforms and the open-loop financial networks,” he says. “We’re also excited to demonstrate the fastest, most efficient onboarding process in the industry.” Libson says the company designed the Flexia solution to eliminate the consumers’ pain points by providing instant enrollment, instant funding, and instant access to funds, with meaningful benefits. “We are now working on our fourth casino management system integration, expanding Flexia’s potential footprint to reach hundreds of casino locations, and as we tailor the casino systems and use cases to the various needs and wants, we are really seeing how revolutionary the Flexia system is,” Libson says. “We are being asked for a Blackberry and we are delivering an iPhone, and the reactions from our partners and casino operators is incredibly fulfilling.” He says that in three minutes, the company can register and onboard a customer, putting a Flexia multi-account cashless product in their hand. “As many operators have realized, one of the major obstacles to player adoption has been the lengthy enrollment process of some of the cashless systems in the market,” Libson says. “Our easy enrollment process removes those barriers, and the Flexia Cashless app and multi-account card are a much more efficient method of engaging with the machines. Also, through our open-loop Flexia Mastercard, operators have access to and can track player preferences and spending habits outside the casino—something they didn’t have before—and can utilize this data to market to their players more effectively and customize promotions in the app.” It should be some show at G2E.

PURCHASING

The Reset Button When supply chain issues hit your FF&E budget, maybe it’s time for a change By Carl Long

W

e’ve all had to do it—when a device isn’t working correctly, we have had to push the reset button. It normally happens at the worst possible time. You try to connect to your network to get something done, and your computer freezes. You must join a video conference, and your camera stops working. You are on a call, and the signal drops. Finally, you ask for help from an expert, and you are told to reset your system in order to restore it to the way that worked previously. Consider this article an expert telling you to push the reset button on how you manage your project purchasing. Over the course of the global lockdown, project teams had to go to extraordinary efforts and find new ways of overcoming the challenges of a global supply chain rocked by inconsistent production, labor shortages and shipping delays. As the industry moves past those challenges and the supply chain normalizes, it is good for casino developers and project managers to consider the lessons learned over the past two years and incorporate them into their project delivery plan in order to reset their projects to a better way forward. Three lessons from the last two years can help owners move ahead: First, project teams should start working together earlier. By bringing together the various disciplines on a project early, owners can leverage that expertise for a better outcome. There are concerns and market-specific conditions that a contractor and purchasing agent have that an architect and interior designer may not, and vice versa. Identifying those concerns early gives more time to plan and develop a strategy to overcome those challenges. Project teams can also use a tool, like we do at PMI, called FF&E Conceptual Budgeting to develop a sourcing strategy for their project. This helps owners mitigate their delivery risk while pointing the design team to vendors that fit the owner’s desired sourcing strategy. If the expectations are clear at the beginning, the talented designers in the gaming industry can deliver great casino design while being mindful of where the product is produced. Assembling a project team early also helps focus on the project timeline correctly. As the owner, architect and interior designer work through the design process, the contractor and purchasing agent continually give insight into production lead times. The planning phase of a project has always been important, but the team now needs to have more players earlier. Second, a project purchasing timeline should be indexed to the current FF&E market. Over the last two years, changes to sources and lead times caught many owners by surprise. Formerly reliable suppliers struggled to meet deadlines or quality standards. Shipping took longer and cost more than ever before. Owners had developed timelines based on a rule of thumb that no longer applied and then tried to expedite their own projects without well-defined standards for expediting. It was as if owners were trying to change a flat tire while the truck was driving down the road. That combination of a faulty understanding of the re66

P3 PROGRESSIVE PRODUCTS PREVIEW 2022

alities of the current marketplace and poor expediting delayed their projects. Owners should rely on project purchasing experts to build their purchasing timelines and expedite their projects. Qualified third-party purchasing companies with gaming experience can provide information early in a project to help owners and contractors develop their purchasing timeline. At PMI, we collaborate with the contractor to understand the construction critical path and then utilize our in-house expediting department to keep on that path. Project expediting of FF&E is a unique skill that many owners do not do properly; the best purchasing companies have separate expediting departments that focus on nothing but expediting the production and delivery of product for their projects. Third, expertise in FF&E and OS&E purchasing for casino projects is important, and that expertise was lost at many companies because of the “Great Resignation.” The loss of that project experience across the industry has impacted the ability of many companies to complete projects properly. Many of the lessons learned by leaders in the gaming industry are not being passed down to the next generation of project professionals because those people who were at the cusp of ascending to leadership positions left the industry. The reductions of staff and a desire to maintain close control of all expenditures during the economic downturn led many owners to pull purchasing in-house. Some owners used property-level staff, often without purchasing experience, to complete projects. In the end, this ended up costing more time and money and frustrated project teams. As the current market for casino development and renovation activity grows, casino owners should recognize that third-party purchasing companies that specialize in gaming projects are the best source for the industry’s institutional knowledge. The scope, size and speed of casino projects can easily overwhelm in-house departments or purchasing firms that are trying to learn the gaming industry. Finding the right purchasing company with gaming experience can help an owner reset their project plan and deliver their project in the new post-lockdown environment. Just like resetting a computer has specific steps, resetting a project expectation starts with some specific steps: • Assemble a complete project team early. This means different types of members than in the past. • Create a timeline based on expert knowledge and use professional project expediting. • Leverage the institutional knowledge of purchasing firms that specialize in gaming. Pushing the reset button is often the best way to get something right. Casino owners and developers should push that button now. Carl Long is senior vice president and partner at Purchasing Management International, the leading FF&E and OS&E purchasing company in the industry.

Powering Casino Call Centers With Artificial Intelligence

Cutting-Edge Solutions for Next-Generation Gaming

C

A

all centers are an integral aspect of casino resort operations. Even as guests are becoming more comfortable with booking travel online, the call center remains a major channel for casino reservations—especially for loyalty members who are often required to book through their assigned host to receive special offers. With conversational artificial intelligence, or AI, casino resorts can implement an innovative booking solution that reduces the need for live agents. Conversational AI is the most popular form of artificial intelligence (e.g., website chatbots) as it enables consumers to communicate with the application the same way they would with a human agent. Integrating AI into a casino resort’s call center can streamline operational efficiencies and staffing issues, which comes at a crucial time for hospitality. Launched in August 2022, Cendyn’s new AI Call Center integration was created in coordination with PolyAI to provide casino resorts with the ability to reduce call wait times and create a streamlined system for new bookings, with additional benefits for loyalty members. Cendyn’s AI Call Center application speaks and responds in natural languages, designed to handle any and all aspects of completing a new reservation—including collecting credit card information, proposed room types, stay dates and more. The AI is also trained to ask for loyalty member information if the caller does not automatically provide their details, while also identifying any special offers or comps that member qualifies for. This is a major development for the industry, as many current casino setups do not allow loyalty members to book these offers on their own. Integrating Conversational AI into casino resort call centers brings a new level of convenience and efficiency to casino bookings. When it comes to AI and hospitality, the future is bright. The technology coming to market has the potential to solve some of the industry’s most pressing issues concerning staff shortages and training. With this integration, casino resorts can streamline operations while allowing in-person associates to concentrate on improving the on-property guest experience and creating the memorable moments that keep those guests coming back again and again. For more information on Cendyn’s AI Call Center integration, visit cendyn.com or email info@cendyn.com.

INCREDIBLE TECHNOLOGIES

A Catalog of Proven, Industry-Leading Products

I

ncredible Technologies (IT) is a gaming manufacturer committed to delivering industry-leading products to locations and networks around the world. The company headquarters are in Vernon Hills, Illinois, with an additional office in Las Vegas. IT products represent the very best in innovation, serviceability and entertainment. IT was founded in 1985 with a focus on providing hardware and software for the coin-operated amusement industry and PC games. The company is most famously recognized for the creation of Golden Tee Golf, one of the most successful pay-to-play video game franchises in history. The passion and knowhow to create games in pay-to-play markets led the company to diversify its products portfolio and enter the casino industry in 2011. Since their introduction to slot floors, IT slots have become known for their industry-leading innovation. The Infinity product line produced industryrecognized hardware like the first-of-its-category Infinity Skybox with its skyhigh presence and practical hardware, as well as the groundbreaking Infinity V55 Edge display, allowing operators to place games in never-before-seen configurations on floors. The company has since created franchise gaming brands like Crazy Money and Ultra Rush Gold with innovative game mechanics and a reputation for rigorously tested math models. A new era of innovation continues with the nationwide rollout of the Prism platform. The new generation of hardware and software at IT is marked with Prism VXP—a G2E 2021 debut product whose potential is now realized and recognized in the marketplace. The cabinet utilizes three game-integrated monitors and cutting-edge technology for a show-stopping presentation, as the VXP display physically expands more than 13 inches. With recent software upgrades and successful installs across the country, IT is ready to flex its muscle with PrismVXP in an upgraded presentation. Game software will now utilize the expansion feature even more during game play. The curb appeal has been upgraded, too. When a PrismVXP bank is empty, the monitors will raise and lower themselves to create a “wave” feature, capturing the eye of passersby. With fully game-integrated PrismFlex Edge monitors, attract modes and game play span beyond just an individual cabinet, reaching the monitors placed between games for extra player comfort and peak on-floor branding. Placed with high-frequency expansion and compulsory PrismFlex Edges, the PrismVXP is advertising and delivering its full potential. IT is also heavily invested in its partnerships beyond Class III gaming. The company continues to grow its footprint throughout tribal casinos with its Class II system and compelling games. Additionally, IT plans to bring its industry-first Class II innovations to G2E, along with its Grand Crystal 2 electronic table game, featuring automated roulette and craps. MORSE WATCHMANS

The Developer and Global Leader of Electronic Key Control

S MARKER TRAX

The Cashless, Digital Marker Alternative

Y

ears ago, Gary Ellis passed a slot player on the casino floor who was waiting in line to take a marker out at the cage, and he thought, “There has to be a better way.” That simple moment was the inspiration for what eventually became Marker Trax, a cashless, digital alternative to casino markers. Developed and patented by Ellis in 2018, it’s the first product of its kind to offer regulatory-compliant casino marker technology that makes issuing advances a truly efficient process. It provides casinos with the tools to manage their casino credit underwriting and repayments, and allows players to be scored and given access to their markers in minutes, all through seamless integration with casino operating systems, allowing for easy startup and player tracking. Marker Trax has further updated the traditional casino marker process, in line with the demands of today’s cashless-forward consumer. Players simply apply online or through the mobile app, and within minutes their cashless marker is available on their favorite machine, ready for immediate play. As convenient as the process is for players, operators benefit from its seamless integration with most existing resort infrastructures, eliminating the need for costly overhead. Marker Trax also significantly reduces an operator’s financial risk, as credit is tied directly to the player’s account and the digital pay-back process occurs at the end of the gaming session when the player elects to cash out. Since its founding four years ago, Marker Trax has built and fostered close partnerships with industry leaders, including Konami Gaming, Aristocrat Gaming, IGT, Light & Wonder, Acres Manufacturing and others. Its technology is powering cashless, seamless advances in player programs at resorts throughout Nevada, as well as at tribal casinos and other properties nationwide. Recognizing its promise and relatively rapid growth, global fintech company Euronet WorldWide Inc. invested in the company’s future in March, setting the springboard for future expansion and optimization into areas beyond slot play, including online gaming, sports betting, table games and even the digital wallet sphere. Stop by the Marker Trax booth at G2E 2022 to learn more about the company’s sector-defining work, and visit its website at markertrax.com. 84
