PREFÁCIO

Apartir de um estudo sobre as comunidades brasileiras nos Estados Unidos, constatamos que muitos de nossos compatriotas nunca haviam estudado Inglês, e que bem poucos sequer possuíam conhecimentos básicos da língua para a sustentação de uma simples conversação do cotidiano, apesar de alguns já morarem há vários anos neste país.

Por esta razão, idealizamos este projeto com o intuito de oferecer a estes brasileiros a oportunidade de aprenderem Inglês de uma forma rápida, prática e objetiva, através de um método eficaz que aborda especificamente a realidade diária do imigrante no exterior e ainda com foco principal na conversação.

A experiência didática de mais de vinte anos lecionando Inglês Corporativo para execu tivos e empresários de grandes empresas no Brasil e também para brasileiros nos EUA, possibilitou inserir neste material as 1.500 palavras inglesas mais utilizadas, assim como, o conteúdo necessário para que o aluno em um curto espaço de tempo esteja apto a se comunicar bem. Ademais, este curso possui uma abordagem detalhada da gramáti ca e linguagem bastante simplificada, proporcionando ao estudante o fácil entendi mento deste novo idioma.

Vale ressaltar que para ter sucesso no aprendizado do Inglês, é necessário esforço, disciplina e dedicação, e mais importante, que o aluno possua o desejo ardente de aprender, visto que apenas um bom material ou um excelente professor, não serão suficientes para que ele domine o idioma.

Portanto, o principal propósito deste projeto é capacitar nossos compatriotas no exterior a fim de que possam encarar novos desafios e abrir novas oportunidades, e, por conseguinte, melhorarem a qualidade de suas vidas, resgatando um pouco da cidadania que há algum tempo fora esquecida por falta do domínio do idioma.

COOMPREENDA A NOSSA ABORDAGEM

A Abordagem Lexical Approach, é uma moderna abordagem de ensino de língua com foco nos itens lexi cais (vocabulário e expressões), e não em palavras isoladas e gramática. Na metodologia MEGA usamos essa abordagem em nossas aulas e damos ênfase em algumas sessões, tais como: NEW VERBS / NEW WORDS / EXPRESSIONS.

A abordagem Grammar-Based Approach, é uma abordagem que vê na gramática o ponto central da língua. Na metodologia MEGA, colocamos a gramática a disposição do aluno para que este compreenda melhor a base da construção da língua aplicada até aquele momento, porém de forma superficial, dinâmica e simpli ficada. Desta forma, utilizamos trechos principais da gramática nas aulas, denominadas CLASS (gramática) e CHECK YOUR PROGRESS (exercícios de fixação) , e também HOMEWORK STAGE TWO (exercícios de solidi fixação).

A abordagem Communicative Approach é uma abordagem no ensino de línguas que prima pelo foco no sentido, ou seja, no significado, na interação entre os falantes, sua intenção e funções linguísticas. O ensino de paradigmas gramaticais fica em segundo plano ou é inteiramente suprimido. INTENSIFIERS

Intensifiers are adverbs or adverbial phrases that strengthen the meaning of other expressions and show emphasis as you can see in the examples below:

EXTREMELY — Between 75% and 99% (High Degree)

You use extremely in front of adjectives and adverbs to emphasize that the specified quality is present to a very great degree.

Ex.: The soccer game was extremely exciting last night.

VERY/REALLY — Between 50% and 75% (Intensely)

When one of these words is placed in front of an adjective or adverb, it makes the meaning of that adjective or adverb more intense, more powerful.

Ex.: Snowboarding is a very dangerous sport. She can run really fast.

QUITE — Somewhere between 50% and 60% (Noticeably)

When quite is placed in front of an adjective or adverb, it adds strength, but not as much strength as really or very. One way to think of quite is that it tells you that the degree of intensity is noticeable and more than expected.

Ex.: There is a quite huge ice skating rink at Central Park in New York City.

FAIRLY/PRETTY — Around 50% (Moderately)

Fairly and pretty weaken the adverbs or adjectives. They tell you that the quality described by the adverb or adjective is present.

Ex.: This team is fairly good. They play pretty well.

SOMEWHAT — Roughly between 25% and 50% (Slightly)

The meaning of fairly and pretty is similar to the meaning of the word somewhat

Ex.: Our new uniforms are somewhat comfortable.

AMERICAN CHAMPIONS

Why are Americans so good in sports? The answer is very simple. Sports in the U.S.A. are a very important part of American culture, and it’s particularly associated with education in the USA. Children are encouraged to practice sports, and parents invest a lot of resources on coaching, training facilities, programs, and equipment from kindergarten through high school.

There are youth organizations in almost every city across America that provide children opportunities to participate in indoor and outdoor sports programs throughout the year. To join these programs, the parents only need to sign up for the season, just paying a small fee for sports like: football, soccer, softball, basketball, and baseball, among others. Most of them take place at public parks where there are many public fields.

Either parents who volunteer their time or volunteer coaches coach the teams. The teams can play among themselves, or they can play against teams from across town, which is more common. The best players are usually selected from tryouts and can join travel teams where the competition is at a much higher level.

If the kids are really good and stand out in those competitions, they can even play on high school teams and hopefully get a scholarship to go to college for free. In college, there are a lot of games where players can display their talents and could be drafted to play professionally on the major sports leagues throughout the US and Canada.

The mindset of the American people plays a big role in that, since they are raised with a “champion mentality” from childhood. It makes a huge difference in competition.

Even when we talk about the Olympics, the US has won the most medals of any country. These achievements are even more impressive considering the fact that the American Olympic team remains the only one in the world to receive no government funding.

Make no mistake about it. There’s a reason why the USA is considered the greatest country in the world in sports, and we must recognize that. God Bless America!

Law enforcement agencies are also commonly charged with the responsibility of deterring criminal activity and preventing crimes in progress. Other duties include the service and enforcement of warrants, writs, and other orders from the courts.

On October 29, 1929, also known as Black Tuesday, a major American stock market crash occurred. It started in September and ended late October, when share prices on the New York Stock Exchange collapsed. By 1932, stocks were worth only about 20 percent of their original value.

It was the most devastating stock market crash in history, when taking into consideration the full extent and duration of its after effects. The crash, which followed the London Stock Exchange’s crash of September, signaled the beginning of the Great Depression.

Together, the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression created the largest financial crisis of the 20th century. The panic has come to serve as a symbol of the economic decline that gripped the world during the next decade.

The Wall Street Crash had a major impact on the U.S. and world economy, and it has been the source of intense academic historical, economic, and political debate from its aftermath until the present day. Some people believe that abuses by utility holding companies contributed to the crash and the depression that followed.

The rise of mass unemployment and production downturn are seen as a result of the crash, although the crash is by no means the sole event that contributed to the depression. True or not, the consequences were dire for almost everyone on the planet. It wiped out billions of dollars of wealth in just one day, and this immediately discouraged consumer buying.

By 1933, nearly half of America’s banks had failed. Approximately 20,000 companies went bankrupt, 23,000 people committed suicide, and unemployment was approaching 15 million people, or 30 percent of the country’s workforce.

The relief and reform was named the “New Deal,” and it was enacted by the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which helped lessen the worst effects of the Great Depression. However, the U.S. economy would not fully recover until after 1939, when World War II helped to revitalize the American economy.

When Columbus first set foot on American soil, European universities were already an cient, traditional, and respected. They had already developed great thinkers, leaders, and philosophers, famous for their accomplishments.

Currently, the American educational system is complex and respected, having some of the best universities in the world. Some of these started as colonial colleges. Among them is Harvard Col lege, which was founded in 1636 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Har vard College is well known as Harvard University and is one of the most famous and respected colleges on the planet. Other colonial colleges include Yale University, Princeton University, and Columbia University. Another well-known institution is the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology (MIT), which is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Early colonial institutions, like Harvard, were founded to provide education to those going into the ministry. But after the American Revolution, these colleges began to broaden their focus to include education for medicine and law. In the nineteenth century, the mission of higher education changed radically to include “practical subjects” like agriculture and engineering, as well.

In the twentieth century, there was continuing development of large, complex systems of public colleges and universities, and an ongoing expansion of smaller, private colleges and universities. As of today, there are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the United States. Furthermore, a distinct system of public colleges and universities and private colleges and universities has emerged.

Many of the larger public and private institutions provide for both teaching and research, and some of the largest institutions enroll 40,000 or more students on just one campus alone. Colleges and universities in the United States offer several types of degrees. A community college usually offers a two-year degree known as an associate’s degree.

A college or university usually offers a four-year degree known as a bachelor’s degree. Other colleges and universities offer advanced degrees such as master’s and/or doctoral degrees (Ph.D’s or Ed.D’s). Some other colleges and universities offer professional or specialized degrees such as medical or law degrees.

However, immigrants are many times misrepresented or their role in the U.S. economy is misunderstood. Let’s go over some facts: Immigrants account for 13.5% of the total U.S. population. Many people think that most U.S. immigrants come from Mexico, however, 30% of immigrants actually come from Asia. 72.5% of immigrants believe hard work is the key to success in America. Immigrants are responsible for half of the total U.S. labor force growth over the last decade.

Many people think that immigrants don’t help the economy, however studies show that 7.6% of immigrants are self-employed or have their own business compared to 5.6% of native-born Americans and they founded more than 40% of Fortune 500 companies. The other myth is that immigrants aren’t educated, recent studies also show that immigrants are more likely to have college degrees than native-born Americans and are more likely to have advanced degrees.

There’s no doubt that immigration makes America stronger and more prosperous. No other nation in the world welcomes so many new arrivals and constantly renews itself, refreshes itself with the hopes, the opti-mism, the drive, and the dynamism of each new generation of immigrants. That’s the reasons why America is exceptional and even after two centuries, America is always young and still looking to the future.

The history of immigration to the United States shows the flow of people to America beginning with the first European settlers around 1600. About this time, British and other Europeans settled primarily on the east coast. In 1619, Africans began being imported as slaves.

The U.S. experienced successive waves of immigration, particularly from Europe. Immigrants sometimes paid the cost of transoceanic transportation by becoming enslaved servants after their arrival in the New World. Later, immigration rules became more restrictive.

In 1945, the War Brides Act allowed foreign-born wives of U.S. citizens who had served in the U.S. Armed Forces to immigrate to the United States. In 1946, The War Brides Act was extended to include the fiancés of American soldiers.

HURRICANE KATRINA

Disasters by definition are social experiences and bring profound cultural changes to a society. “Apocalypse” was the word found to better describe Katrina. It was a Category Five storm which struck the Louisiana Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005. It caused over 1,200 deaths, destruction of 204,000 homes and $125 billion in damage, particularly in the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas.

The Coast Guard rescued over 34,000 people in New Orleans. Private citizens also used boats to help in rescues, and offered food and shel ter to people who were displaced.

New Orleans

Flooding occurred to a great extent as a result of fatal engineering flaws in the flood protection system. Approximately 80% of the city was inundated for weeks. It also destroyed most of the city’s trans portation and communication facilities, leaving tens of thousands of people who had not evacuated prior to landfall stranded with little access to food, shelter, or basic needs.

Furthermore, the emergency response from federal, state and local governments was widely criticized. Many investigations in the storm’s aftermath concluded that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was responsible for the failure of the flood-control systems. It had designed and built the region’s levees decades earlier.

On September 5, 2005, all residents were allowed to come back and inspect their homes after the storm, and electricity was restored in downtown New Orleans. But the next day, the mayor ordered all people to be evacuated from the city due to contaminated water and unlivable conditions. Later on, the areas with little or no flooding were the first to be officially reopened, have utilities restored, and many residents and businesses returned.

Another fact was that hundreds of thousands of people who had been evacuated scattered around the Unit ed States to resettle and never returned to their homes.

Yet another challenge facing New Orleans was the surprisingly large homeless population created by Katrina. The number of homeless people living in the streets doubled to 12,000 people. With a post-Katrina popula tion of 300,000 people, this meant that 1 out of every 25 people were homeless, an extremely high number, and nearly three times that of any other US city.

Over a decade later, much of the city appears to have found its rhythm again. Some neighborhoods, such as the Lower Ninth Ward, remain works in progress and are still trying to recover from the disaster.

The Civil War is a central event in America’s historical consciousness. While the Revolution of 1776 -1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would ultimately be. This war decided two fundamental questions left unanswered by the revolution: if the United States was to be a dissolvable confederation of sovereign states or an indivisible nation with a sovereign national government; and if this nation, born of a declaration that all men were created with an equal right to liber ty, would continue to exist as the largest slaveholding country in the world.

The victory of Union forces in the war preserved the United States as one nation and ended the slavery that had divided the country from its beginning. But these achievements came at the cost of 625,000 lives-

-nearly the same number of American soldiers who died in all the other wars in which the USA had fought combined. The American Civil War was the largest and most destructive conflict in the Western world be tween 1815 and the beginning of World War I in 1914.

The Civil War started because of uncompromising dif ferences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slav ery in the territories that had not yet become states. When Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 as the first Republican President who pledged to keep slavery out of the territories, seven slave states in the South seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America. Lincoln’s administration and most Northern residents refused to recognize the legitima cy of secession. They feared that it would discredit democracy and create a fatal precedent that would eventually fragment the United States into several small, squabbling countries.

The event that triggered war came at Fort Sumter in Charleston Bay on April 12, 1861. Claiming this United States fort as their own, the Confederate army on that day opened fire on the federal garrison and forced it to lower the American flag in surrender. Lincoln called out the militia to suppress this“insurrection.”Four more slave states seceded and joined the Confederacy. By the end of 1861, nearly a million armed men confronted each other along a line stretching 1200 miles from Virginia to Missouri. But the real fighting began in 1862. Huge battles like Shiloh in Tennessee, Gaines’ Mill, Second Manassas, and Fredericksburg in Virginia, and Antietam in Maryland indicated even bigger campaigns and battles in the coming years. By 1864, the original Northern goal of a limited war to restore the Union had given way to a new strategy of “total war” to destroy the Old South and its basic institution of slavery. They also sought to give the restored Union a “new birth of freedom,” as President Lincoln put it in his address at Gettysburg to dedicate a cemetery for Union soldiers killed in the battle there. There were bloody battles at places with names like The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. In 1864 and 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman led his army deep into the Confederate heartland of Georgia and South Carolina, de-stroying their economic infrastructure, while General George Thomas virtually destroyed the Confedera-cy’s Army of Tennessee at the battle of Nashville.

By the spring of 1865, all the major Confederate armies surrendered, and when the Union cavalry captured the fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Georgia on May 10, 1865, resistance collapsed and the war ended. During the Civil War, much of the Southern United States was destroyed, farms and plantations were burned down, and their crops destroyed. Then, a long and painful process of rebuilding a united nation free of slavery began.

BILLY GRAHAM

The Evangelist

William Franklin Graham Jr., know as Billy Graham was born on November 7th, 1918 and passed away almost one hundred years later on February 21st, 2018. He was an American Evange list and he was considered one of the most influential Christian leaders of the 20th century.

Billy was the eldest son of a prosperous dairy farmer in North Carolina and was raised by his parents in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. In 1934, when he was only 16 years old, he attended a revival service led by the evangelist Mordecai Ham when he was converted and decided to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

In 1943, Graham married his college sweetheart Ruth, whose parents were at that time missionaries in Chi na. The couple were married for almost 64 years until her death in 2007 at the age of 87.

While attending college, Graham became pastor of the United Gospel Tabernacle, and he had developed the preaching style for which he would be known —a simple, direct message of sin and salvation that he delivered energetically and with no disdain.

From 1943 to 1944, Graham briefly served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Illinois. While there, he learned that his friend Pastor Torrey Johnson’s radio program, Songs in the Night, was about to be canceled due to lack of funding.

After consulting with the members of his church in Western Springs, Graham decided to take over Johnson’s program with financial support from his congregation. Launching the new radio program on January 2, 1944, Graham recruited George Shea as his director of radio ministry.

Graham scheduled a series of revival services in 1949, for which he used circus tents in parking lots. He got to attract national media coverage and the crusade event ran for eight weeks – five weeks longer than he initially planned. Graham became a national figure with heavy coverage from the wire services and national magazines as well. Despite his successes, Graham faced criticism from both liberals and conservatives.

His evangelical crusades around the world, his television appearances and radio broadcasts, his friendships with presidents, and his unofficial role as spokesman for America’s evangelicals made him one of the most recognized religious figures in the whole world.

In 1957, Graham invited Martin Luther King Jr. to pray at a crusade and to speak at a later ministry retreat to help his team understand the racial situation in America more fully. The relationship between the two legendary American preachers continued as King’s notoriety rose.

King is quoted as saying, “Had it not been for the ministry of my good friend Dr. Billy Graham, my work in the civil rights movement would not have been as successful as it has been.”

In his autobiography, he wrote: “I have often said that the first thing I am going to do when I get to Heaven is ask: ‘Why me, Lord? Why did You choose a farm boy from North Carolina to preach to so many people?’ “I have thought about that question a great deal,” he added, “but I know also that only God knows the answer.”
