ISLE OF RAASAY DISTILLERY

Raasay, Inner Hebrides

We travelled to the breathtaking Isle of Raasay which lies just o the West Coast of Scotland in the Inner Hebrides, to work with the team behind the Isle of Raasay Distillery. Not only do the team dutifully produce the delicious Isle of Raasay Single Malt and Isle of Raasay Gin (tested and approved by Team Gloam), they also operate one of the most beautifully stylish visitor centres we have ever been to.

THE BRIEF:

Initially, to create a large scale installation acting as a vibrant and textural starting point for their popular distillery tours. We were then invited back to build upon designs at various points around the visitor centre and distillery including above the bar, in visitor spaces and in the gorgeous bedrooms.

THE INSPIRATION:

e design direction was taken from the use of stone layering in the architectural details of the building, inspired by the natural layers in the surrounding landscapes. We then designed our own version of a ‘machair’ from the Isle of Rassay and ran with it!

THE IDEA:

Using carefully dried and preserved materials in a palette to re ect the Island and the brand, helped keep the display feeling natural and connected with the building and its enchanting surroundings.

THE FINAL DESIGN:

e design undulates with di erent depths and heights, with the raw materials being used di erently depending on their shape and scale. Barley heads were used to ‘reach out’ from the wall whereas broom and smaller ower foliage were used at a shallower depth creating interest. All of this intertwined with stone and cask elements being used by the architects and interior designers.

EDINBURGH STREET FOOD

Restaurant, Edinburgh

As projects go this was a biggie in terms of scale, colour and wow factor. We relished helping the team behind the global eating experience, Edinburgh Street Food (ESF), transforming over 900 square meters of space into a vibrant environment worthy of all the incredible street food and bar vendors it houses.

THE BRIEF:

To design a series of rich, green, abundant installations to work alongside a vibrant and lively design direction throughout the interior and exterior dining spaces.

THE INSPIRATION:

Taking the lead from our client’s vision for the space, we immediately landed on a neon pink for the hero colour pop to sit amongst oodles of lush foliage. e direction was urban, abundant and FUN.

THE IDEA:

We chose a core collection of foliage that repeated throughout the space with some well-placed statement details exaggerated in size, detail and colour.

THE FINAL DESIGN:

e design included delicate trailing and cascading features, with many of the installations high up within the industrial ceiling area. We created an undulating composition that ‘grows’ into the dining space and interacts more with the tables and diners.

HENDERSONS

Restaurant, Edinburgh

Like most Dunediners, we were so excited when Hendersons opened the doors of its new home on Barclay Street. But there were two main reasons: rstly, because it’s an iconic Edinburgh veggie institution, and has been for over 60 years. Secondly, because we had the pleasure of creating not one, not two, but three dried ower installations to feature permanently in the space!

THE BRIEF:

To create a sustainable, long lasting design to support the warm and inviting atmosphere throughout the interior and private dining spaces. e designs needed to be impactful but feel light and airy.

THE INSPIRATION:

Natural and wild - using di erent wheat, oats, broom and grasses, installing them so that they undulated and owed in rolling waves, with the so pendant lights dropping through at points.

THE IDEA:

e idea for the main dining space was to create an undulating wild meadow/wheat eld canopy suspended from the ceiling. e snug area was to have a more intimate and secret garden feel, with trailing green foliage taking over the statement circular light feature.

THE FINAL DESIGN:

e design included a dramatic ceiling installation. To draw the whole room together we also created a dried ower installation for the banquette area, incorporating dried thistles and owers, as well as bud vases on all tables, a showstopping branch structure over the internal stairwell and a garden inspired design around a large scale light xture in the snug.

THE BRIEF:

To design an impactful exterior display to stand out on the high street and catch passing potential customers, and to set the tone for the interior space. Further installations inside to create a luxurious ‘Parisian’ atmosphere.

THE INSPIRATION:

Materials chosen to re ect the colour palette of the Cafe and its branding using so creams, pistachio greens with pops of gentle and feminine pink and lilacs.

THE IDEA:

To create a look that the owers and foliage have been le to grow in the space and the café has grown into its surroundings.

THE FINAL DESIGN:

An inviting exterior façade, leading to interior dried oral canopy displays suspended from ra structures in the ceiling. ese displays undulated in depth to create drama within the space with a wild and natural feel. Designs carried through to feature arched mirrors and in decorative vase displays.

Wild M d | Banqu e

THE BRIEF:

To design a textural, and meadow inspired installation along a long row of banquet seating to provide interest and delight for the customers.

THE INSPIRATION:

e texture of the installation was also a key design consideration. e materials ranged from so u y grass heads to the more robust shapes of teasels and achillea.

THE IDEA:

A display that appears as if it had been planted and was growing wild from the seating itself.

THE FINAL DESIGN:

A glorious wild meadow of owers that spans the entire length of the co ee shop’s banquette seating.

e team used a selection of dried and preserved grasses and owers, creating a mixture of shapes and interests. Playing with height and scale for added impact.
