Summer fun all summer long GLM is a year-round Montessori program that offers themed summer camps. With special summer activities within the Montessori program, we provide continuity for returning students and develop teacher/child/family relationships with new students.

Toddler Fun in the Sun (18 Months - 3 Years) The summer is a great time for new toddlers to adjust to a day away from parents and other caregivers. The fundamentals of being “in school” are learned in a loving, fun environment. Toddlers attend age-appropriate assemblies and events and enjoy their own outdoor activities such as gardening and splashing in wading pools on warm days.

Summer Fun in the Sun (Pre-K thru Kindergarten) GLM staff have planned special summertime fun for newcomers and returning students.

In addition to the continuity of the Montessori classroom curriculum, teachers will include the following activities: Daily gardening, sports, music/movement and Science.

Weekly games, music, yoga, art, cooking, foreign language and water play.

Intro to the Performing Arts - July 5-15 only (For GLM 5 yr. olds only) Separate Registration

This program is optional for GLM 5 yr. olds enrolled in summer day camp. During Week 1 the children will be escorted daily for 1-1/2 hours, to the performing arts building (Live-Oak classroom) and will then be returned to their regular GLM classrooms for ongoing activities. Week 2, parents must drop children at the theater and staff will return them to GLM. They will learn dances and songs from specialists and will perform in groups as cherry blossoms. Arts, crafts, scenery projects, movement experiences and costumes are part of this introductory theatre program. 9-day attendance is required. Limited enrollment on a first-come, first served basis.

School-Age Performing Arts Camp July 5-15 Grades 1-6 (Ages 6-12 yrs.) Separate fee

In two short weeks, kids learn about theater, audition, casting, memorize roles and dances - and on Friday, July 15, put on an entire children’s opera. Working with theater professionals, this is an extraordinary opportunity for children who are interested in theater. This program is open to both GLM children and the general public. 9-day attendance is required (this year the 4th of July Holiday falls on the first Monday).

Performing Arts Camp July 5 - July 15th, 2011 Grades 1-6

Burning Rice Fields “Burning Rice Fields” A Children’s Opera Based on a Japanese Folktale

The opera opens on a tiny Japanese fishing village nestled against a bluff by the ocean. An old woman rings the morning bell, waking her people for prayers before they start off for work. The men go to the sea to fish, the women harvest the rice in the field atop the bluff, and the children gather firewood in the forest at the foot of the great mountain which rises from the center of the island.

The old woman laments that her life has no purpose; she can no longer work in the rice fields and her husband and children have all died. The only possession she has left in the world is her rice-straw hut.

The evil feudal lord with his geisha girls and warriors comes to the village demanding fish, rice and kindling wood. The old woman has nothing to give so the warriors destroy her hut and leave. The old woman, in despair, goes up to the mountain top to die. When the villagers return from their day’s work and discover that the old woman and her hut are gone, they realize that it is the feudal lord’s doing.

The old woman falls asleep on the mountain while waiting to die. The rising moon wakes her to warn of an oncoming tidal wave that will destroy her village.

She sets fire to the rice fields in order to warn her people. When they come running to help put out the fire, they are saved from the wall of water.

To show their appreciation, the villagers build a temple on the bluff, and erect a throne for the old woman so that she can watch for future tidal waves. As the curtain falls, the villagers go to bed while the old woman, full of new purpose in her life, pronounces a blessing over them.

In two short weeks, your child will have the performing experience of a lifetime.

Whether he or she is cast in a supporting role or a lead, they’ll never forget this wonderful experience of total immersion in the theater.
