Letters from the Board Chair and President

With heartfelt pride and sincere gratitude, I welcome you to Greater Lawrence Family Health Center’s 2024 Annual Report. As we look forward to GLFHC’s 45th anniversary in 2025, we are filled with excitement to celebrate a milestone that represents our unwavering dedication to delivering compassionate, accessible, and equitable healthcare for everyone in our community.

This past year, we have navigated challenges with resilience and embraced opportunities to innovate and expand our reach. From enhancing integrated care models and broadening our mobile health services to addressing the social determinants of health, our work is rooted in a fundamental belief that everyone deserves access to high-quality care, no matter their circumstances.

Within these pages, you will find inspiring stories from the individuals we serve, incredible achievements from our dedicated team, and the powerful partnerships that drive our mission forward. At the heart of it all are the values that have sustained GLFHC through more than four decades of growth with dignity, equity, community, and social justice.

As we continue to confront the pressing challenges of housing and food insecurity, economic instability, educational barriers, and the environmental effects of climate change, we are reminded of the vital work still ahead. Thank you for standing with us, for believing in the power of equitable healthcare, and for being part of this transformative journey. Together, we will continue building a healthier, more inclusive future for the Merrimack Valley.

It is my pleasure to present the Fiscal Year 2024 Annual Report for Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. For 44 years, GLFHC has provided the highest quality primary health care in the most compassionate fashion, developing patient relationships based on trust, respect, and cultural competency.

As the second largest community health center in the Commonwealth, and an anchor institution in the Merrimack Valley, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of excellence. GLFHC is widely respected for collaborative, comprehensive patient care and our nationally recognized Lawrence Family Medicine Residency and Pharmacy Residency programs.

GLFHC’s physician training program, the first in the U.S. and a model for other teaching health centers, is second to none and we are fortunate to retain about 50% of our alumni. These family medicine practitioners, who receive specialized training and graduate fluent in Spanish, add formidable talent to our ranks and remain in the community providing primary and high-risk care to patients in Lawrence, Haverhill, and Methuen.

In 2024, the health center remained financially successful while caring for over 65,000 patients, delivering over 700 babies, and filling more than 500,000 prescriptions. Our prenatal population is among the highest risk in the state, and GLFHC physicians work closely with these patients to ensure healthy pregnancies and positive outcomes. We have made considerable headway in addressing addiction through our substance use disorder and bridge clinic services, contributing to a 2023 statewide reduction in opioid-related overdose deaths by 10%. And we’re leading the way in value-based care through a partnership with accountable care organization, Community Care Cooperative. Together, we are ensuring affordability in health care while prioritizing the needs of our patients.

Throughout this report, you will read about highlights from the past year, as well as some of the outstanding work being done by our staff and clinicians. GLFHC employs over 800 people, many from the community, ranging from front-line staff members to physicians, nurses, senior management team and volunteer leaders. Our providers are focused on prevention, wellness, early intervention, and improving the quality and length of life of those most in need. I am proud to be associated with such a noble institution.

GLFHC’s success is also attributed to the strong support we receive from you – our benefactors, partners, and volunteers. Thank you for your continued commitment to Greater Lawrence Family Health Center and congratulations to our dedicated staff for another superb year.

In Memoriam: The Rev. James Parker Keller

Keller was one of the health center’s founders and its first Board Chair in 1980

The Greater Lawrence Family Health Center community is mourning the loss of one of its founders – The Rev. James Parker Keller.

Rev. Keller is an important part of GLFHC history. He was the health center’s first Board Chair, serving from 1980 to 1988, and played a major role in GLFHC’s incorporation.

As the Executive Director of GLEAM (Greater Lawrence Ecumenical Area Ministry), Keller noticed the lack of continuity of health care among the Latino community. GLEAM was an organization created by concerned churches to help immigrants assimilate into the community and launch programs to benefit the population. Founding a community health center in a city with a large number of underserved people was a challenge. In Keller’s book, “Three Islands in My Life and Ministry,” published in May 2016, he tells the story of his role in GLFHC’s history and how precarious the proposal of a health center was. Some local physicians and community leaders felt extremely uneasy about supporting the project on a political level, and the financial equation sometimes seemed hopeless due to lack of revenue and increasing debt.

With Keller’s leadership and other community support, GLFHC overcame these early challenges. Four decades later, the health center fulfills its mission every day of providing crucial health care to the residents of Greater Lawrence, regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. In his memoir Keller wrote, “The [Executive Director] reported to us at the end of our first year of operation that the center had provided 10,000 office visits for patients, of whom a majority were Spanish-speaking.”

During a visit to the health center in 2017 with his wife, Gwen, Keller was pleased to see how much the health center had grown – to 230,000 office visits annually across six clinical sites and two school-based health centers.

His dedication to the people of Greater Lawrence is just one small part of Keller’s exemplary life of service marching for peace and social justice. In November, he passed away peacefully at his home in Rhode Island at the age of 93. You may read more about him online by clicking here.

2017, The Rev. James Keller and his wife, Gwen (center) visited the health center and were given a tour by then-Senior Vice President of Community Support Services Donna Rivera.

First Annual GLFHC Community Health Fair

GLFHC North Lawrence

August 10, 2023

GLFHC’s first annual Community Health Fair, held during National Community Health Center Week, was a great success. More than 150 people, including patients, neighbors, community partners, and local officials turned out to learn about health and safety, and to enjoy a beautiful summer day.

Participants visited 10 different interactive booths run by GLFHC staff, including blood pressure and diabetes screenings; CPR demonstrations; nutrition and health information; boating and swimming safety; smoking and vaping dangers; NARCAN administration/distribution, and assistance signing up for MassHealth insurance.

Several community partners joined in the fun:

• The Lawrence Police Department handed out frosty treats from their ice cream truck – and brought along one of their public safety dogs, who welcomed hugs from families and children.

• The Mayor’s Health Task Force provided support to individuals experiencing food insecurity.

• Lawrence Firefighters informed the public about summer fire dangers and provided safety tips on grilling, fireworks, and campfires.

• The City of Lawrence sent a representative to assist residents with voter registration.

Family Medicine Residency Education Center

Main Clinic, Lawrence December 13, 2023

In December 2023, Greater Lawrence Family Health Center proudly dedicated its new physician residency training suite at the flagship 34 Haverhill Street clinic in Lawrence.

The Bernard R. and Lorraine B. Horn Family Medicine Residency Education Center now serves as the headquarters for GLFHC’s renowned residency program, which trains 44 future primary care physicians each year.

Bernard and Lorraine Horn were the lead donors to GLFHC’s capital campaign for the 34 Haverhill Street clinic and pharmacy. Their generous support made it possible to renovate the facility and achieve the campaign’s ambitious fundraising goal.

To mark the occasion, the Horns and some family members, including GLFHC pharmacist Danielle McManus, PharmD, RPh, participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony and reception. Event attendees had the opportunity to tour the residency training suite and engage with clinical leaders and resident physicians.

The Horn family includes Lorraine (second from left) and Bernie Horn; Bernie’s cousin, Linda Silva (far left); and Linda’s daughter, GLFHC Pharmacist Danielle McManus, PharmD, RPh.

Mobile Health Program

Receives $250,000 Appropriation

May 2024

When GLFHC announced the acquisition of its second mobile health clinic, legislators recognized the transformative potential for its Healthcare for the Homeless, street medicine, and immigrant health services. A larger fleet would allow clinical teams to reach more patients across Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill, and Andover.

Thanks to the steadfast leadership of State Sen. Pavel Payano — a dedicated advocate for GLFHC’s mission — the health center was awarded $250,000 in state funding to support expanded operations of its mobile health program. GLFHC is profoundly grateful to Sen. Payano for his unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion, his concern for the communities he serves, and his belief that quality health care is a fundamental human right.

NACHC

Policy & Issues Forum

Washington, DC

February 10-15, 2024

From February 10–15, GLFHC leaders and Board members attended the annual Policy & Issues Forum hosted by the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC).

This event brought together thousands of health center representatives from across the nation — urban and rural, large and small. The conference featured a wide range of seminars and workshops, with a strong focus on governmental affairs and advocacy. On Valentine’s Day, GLFHC leaders joined their Massachusetts colleagues on Capitol Hill to “show the love” to Members of Congress. They engaged in meaningful discussions with U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, as well as U.S. Representatives Lori Trahan and Katherine Clark.

The conversations centered on a critical issue: the urgent need for increased federal funding for community health centers. CHCs now serve more than 32 million Americans — one in 10 people nationwide — while managing unprecedented patient demand and continuing workforce shortages. In Massachusetts alone, health centers provide essential care to over one million patients living in underserved or economically disadvantaged communities.

Mobilizing Health, Empowering Communities

The health center had a milestone year expanding access through its Mobile Health Program

Greater Lawrence Family Health Center (GLFHC) believes health care should be accessible to everyone — no matter where they live. This commitment drives the success of its Mobile Health Program, which continues to break barriers and improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable members of the community.

A Year of Growth and Impact

GLFHC’s Mobile Health Program had a milestone year in 2024, serving over 5,000 patients who face impediments in accessing quality health care. The medical vans provide a critical lifeline, delivering primary and maternal care, vaccines, substance use treatment, behavioral health support, and preventative screenings at shelters, food pantries, schools, and homeless encampments. By partnering with community organizations, the health center connects patients to essential resources, addressing both health and human service needs.

The program’s expansion reflects the region’s growing demand for culturally competent care, driven by rising numbers of vulnerable populations, including migrant families in temporary housing. GLFHC’s two mobile clinics now visit over 20 community sites, offering safe, convenient, and compassionate care to those who need it most.

Increasing Capacity with a Second Mobile Clinic

A generous lead donation from the Arbella Insurance Foundation, along with support from The Yawkey Foundation, Mass Development Corporation, Greg and Ellen Sebasky, Stearns & Russell Trusts and others, enabled GLFHC to purchase a second state-of-the-art mobile clinic. This 30-foot medical van, equipped with two private exam rooms, advanced diagnostic tools, and telehealth capabilities, has doubled the health center’s capacity to serve patients across Lawrence, Methuen, Haverhill, Andover, and Lowell.

Above, Medical Assistant Maximina Pabon is part of GLFHC’s Healthcare for the Homeless Team. She is excited to begin providing care on the health center’s newest Mobile Health Clinic.

Mobilizing Health (continued)

Legislative Support Drives Success

Recognizing the importance of mobile health care in improving outcomes and extending life expectancy, State Sen. Pavel Payano secured $250,000 in state funding to support expanded mobile health operations. Public and private investment ensures GLFHC can keep up with demand and continue offering uninterrupted, high-quality care to the communities it serves.

A Promising Future

The profound impact of the Mobile Health Program is made possible by GLFHC’s dedicated partners, staff, and legislative champions. As it looks to the future, GLFHC remains committed to finding innovative ways to deliver quality health care to marginalized populations. The Mobile Health Program is more than a service — it’s a promise that the health center will meet its patients where they are, eliminating barriers, reducing disparities, and building healthier lives. Together, GLFHC is are creating a stronger, healthier Merrimack Valley, one visit at a time.

Meet the Ramirez Family: A Journey of Hope and Healing

The Ramirez family’s story is one of courage and resilience. Juan (38) and Maria (36) embarked on a challenging journey from South America to the United States with their three children — Sofia (10), Diego (8), and newborn Isabella — seeking a brighter future. Since October 2023, they’ve been living at a Residence Inn in Massachusetts, holding onto their goal of finding permanent housing.

In January, Maria gave birth to Isabella with the support of GLFHC’s skilled obstetrics team. Today, Isabella is thriving, and the entire family has been embraced by the GLFHC community. Alongside providing comprehensive healthcare services, GLFHC clinicians ensured the family was equipped with warm winter clothing, helping them navigate their new chapter.

Sofia and Diego are now happily enrolled in school and are fully immunized. During their care, GLFHC clinicians discovered that all family members, except baby Isabella, have inactive TB. Thanks to timely treatment, they are on the path to recovery.

Juan faced concerns about his own health, but with GLFHC’s guidance and referrals, he was relieved to learn through thorough testing that no significant issues were found. Their son Diego’s journey has been especially challenging. Born with a heart condition, he underwent an unsuccessful surgery in his home country as an infant. GLFHC clinicians

referred him to a specialist, and plans are now underway for the surgery he needs. Diego was also born with a limb defect. With another referral facilitated by GLFHC, he is preparing to receive a prosthetic limb — a step closer to fulfilling his dream of riding a bike.

The Ramirez family’s story is a testament to the transformative power of compassionate care. GLFHC is honored to walk with them as they build a healthier, brighter future.

#GLFHCGIVES

For many of our employees, taking care of patients extends beyond their appointments. The Access to Care fund was created by GLFHC staff to support patients who need assistance paying for items and services not covered by insurance.
