At Glenwood Academy, we aim to nurture the potential within every student, creating not only academically gifted individuals but also compassionate leaders prepared to make a difference in the world One shining example of this mission in action is Lauren Hedgepeth, an inspiring alumna whose journey exemplifies the transformative impact of our community
As Lauren prepares to graduate from Central State University with a major in criminal justice and aspirations of attending law school to become a judge, it is essential to recognize the forces that have shaped her success the unwavering support from her house parents, the Masons, and the dedication of her educators, especially Cynthia and Janet Hadnott
Lauren’s passion for law ignited during her middle school years, fueled by a desire to advocate for others and ensure justice is served She shared that her aspirations solidified after spending a day shadowing a judge, thanks to a connection made by her great aunt. This experience affirmed her dream and inspired her to pursue a path to law
At Glenwood Academy, house parents play a vital role in the residential life of students These dedicated individuals live in the cottages with students throughout the week, overseeing daily needs and emotional well-being, creating a family-like environment. The support of the Masons, Lauren’s house parents, was pivotal in creating a safe and encouraging space in which she could thrive Reflecting on their influence, Lauren said, “They were there for me when I needed support and guidance” Their commitment to not only her education but also her emotional well-being allowed Lauren to focus on her studies while feeling secure and valued
Equally impactful were her teachers, Cynthia Hadnott and Janet Hadnott Lauren highlighted their unique ability to engage her in the learning process, ensuring she not only understood the material but also felt inspired to explore her interests deeply. “They went above and beyond to make sure I felt engaged in class,” Lauren recalls The Hadnotts' dedication extended beyond textbooks; they encouraged critical thinking and nurtured her aspirations, empowering her confidence to pursue her dreams.
As Lauren stands on the brink of graduating and taking the next steps toward law school, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact that Glenwood Academy has on its students. Each investment made by our community of donors contributes directly to success stories like Lauren’s, reinforcing the idea that together, we cultivate an environment of growth, opportunity, and achievement

Charles Weinberg: Championing Glenwood Academy for Nearly Three Decades
For 28 years, Charles Weinberg, CEO of MSI Express and founder of the Charles Weinberg Annual Golf Outing, has been a steadfast supporter of Glenwood Academy, an institution dedicated to nurturing and educating children in need. His journey with Glenwood began serendipitously while driving past its campus in the south suburbs of Chicago. Over the years, his curiosity turned into a profound commitment to the students and families of this remarkable institution
In the mid to late 1980s, while working at Clorox, Charles learned about Glenwood's initiative to build a playground, seeking a grant from the company he worked for. Intrigued by the mission of Glenwood, he accepted the opportunity to visit the campus, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of the academy on its students "I was very impressed with the way that Glenwood worked," Charles recalls "They took no public money and truly relied on businesses and private donations to support their cause."
His experience at Glenwood went beyond just constructing a playground; it opened his eyes to the academy’s holistic approach to education and personal development. The school was not just a place of learning; it was a community that instilled life skills, responsibilities, and manners in the children Charles noted how the students were actively engaged in chores and responsibilities, learning essential social skills along the way “When you talk to someone, look them in the eye, be polite, be courteous these are skills that every child should learn,” he emphasizes
The transformative environment at Glenwood resonated deeply with Charles. He recognized that the academy played a crucial role in supporting not only the children but their entire family units as well By providing a safe place for children during the day, Glenwood enabled parents whether they were single, grandparents, or extended family members to work or pursue education without the stress of finding childcare. Charles highlights this as a key aspect that differentiates Glenwood from other schools: “They accounted for the challenges that families face, making it one of the keys that makes Glenwood a truly special place.”
This personal connection drove Charles to dedicate his efforts to Glenwood, leading him to establish the Charles Weinberg Annual Golf Outing, an event that has raised critical funds for the academy over nearly three decades. His commitment serves as a beacon for others to follow; he passionately calls on local businesses and individuals to lend their support to Glenwood Academy “It’s about more than just education It’s about creating opportunities for children to thrive,” he insists.
