Life Just Got Better! With the assurance that their community continues to take all measures to keep them safe and healthy – and a renewed appreciation for the level of security The Glenridge provides – members are resuming normal routines, engaging with each other … and living a lifestyle they say is exhilarating and inspirational. Nothing but the Best You can’t compromise on quality. That’s how David and Jane Karklin felt when it came to choosing a senior-living community. And they should know. As an engineer and businessman, Dave directed quality assurance programs for global companies including Raytheon and Amphenol – and when he and Jane started planning their next move, they were determined not to settle for anything less than the best. “We visited just about every community around Sarasota, but they just didn’t have the same level of quality,” the couple says. “The Glenridge seemed superior for a number of reasons: the services, the amenities, the cultural programs … but number one was the people. We were so impressed by the friendliness and kindness of both members and staff.” It didn’t take long for the Karklins to feel right at home. Jane – a writer, performer, and musician whose poetry

has been published in several anthologies, including her book, “Shadows of Memory,” which is in the Glenridge library – was charmed by the vibrant personalities and rich culture of the community. “It’s exhilarating,” she says. “The social aspect of living here is extremely important, and social interactions are vital – they add years to your life. Everyone you meet is energetic and involved.” For the Karklins, the greatest advantage is peace of mind. “Especially with coronavirus, we’re so glad to be here, because we don’t have to worry – and neither do our children,” Jane says. “During the shelter-in-place, the staff took very good care of us. Our meals were delivered to our door, and everyone was gracious. We know we’re in the best place we could be.”

This Is the Gold Standard

The independence of a Club Home is one of many things the Jehns love about The Glenridge.

In their careers, both Christopher and Mary Ellen Jehn relied heavily on strategic planning. A former defense analyst, business executive, and Assistant Secretary of Defense, Christopher’s responsibilities ranged from directing all work for the U.S. Marine Corps at the Center for Naval Analyses … to management oversight and policy direction for more than three million military and civilian personnel in the

Defense Department. Mary Ellen, an advertising executive, began her career as a media buyer and production manager. After retiring in 2010 to their home in Falls Church, VA, the couple traveled and did volunteer work – but when they decided it was time to make their next move, they set their sights on a new objective: Finding a community where they could truly thrive. They toured dozens of communities from Colorado to Florida looking for the perfect match. “People always said, ‘You’ll know the right fit when you see it,’” Christopher recalls. “But nothing really struck a chord with us – until we found The Glenridge. It was different. Right away, we realized it was the gold standard.” Lots of things about the community stood out: the homes, the Fitness Center, the great “face appeal” – and especially the people. “It was immediately apparent that everyone here has a real zest for life,” says Mary Ellen. “We didn’t see that kind of enthusiasm anywhere else.” Although the Jehns acknowledge that long-term healthcare is a key benefit at The Glenridge, they find the lifestyle equally important. “There’s no such thing as ‘too early’ to come here,” says Mary Ellen. “The sooner you come, the sooner you’ll make connections, get engaged, feel more active – and probably live longer. This place is inspirational!”

That’s when I said, ‘This is it; I’m not going to do this anymore’ – and decided it was time for a change. I emailed my children and told them I was taking my future into my own hands.” MaryAl has always been a “take charge” kind of person. After growing up in State College, PA, and graduating from Penn State, she set out to tour Europe on a budget of $5 a day. “I’m not the sort to let life pass me by,” she says. “I’d rather visit a museum, see beautiful architecture, or take a walk out in nature – there’s always something more to experience.” At The Glenridge, MaryAl is in her element. From staying fit to participating in a women’s faith group, she’s “game to be a part of everything that happens here.” “The Glenridge represents security and safety – but also friendliness,” she says. “I’m impressed by the positive attitudes and commitment to emotional and social wellness. Other communities just don’t have the same sparkle.”

That didn’t change when he moved to the Glenridge: He can often be found tending his garden, sailing model boats with The Glenridge Yacht Club, or exploring the campus with his partner Anita Shelare – and their two golden retrievers, Jamison and Benjamin. During a summer of social distancing, their spacious Club Home – with its thriving garden – has given Le and Anita the freedom to stay as active and engaged as ever. “All you have to do is step out into your garden or one of the walking trails for some fresh air,” says Le. “It’s been a real refuge to all of us.” “Living in a Club Home is absolutely marvelous,” agrees Anita. “I’m a social person, and it’s been so easy to stay connected with our friends. Around sunset, we sit out on the lanai and have happy hour with all the neighbors – and their dogs – passing by. We’ve had no worries at all.”

ven before moving to The Glenridge, Carol Stevenson was a familiar face at the community’s social events. “My friends lived here – and we visited them often – so I knew from the beginning how warm and vibrant everyone was,” she recalls. “There was no question in my mind that it was a delightful place to be.” Now a member herself, Carol is confident she made the right choice. “The Glenridge really ‘has it all,’” she says. “And the attention

Not long after she moved in, the COVID-19 outbreak caused shutdowns across the United States – but The Glenridge took proactive steps to ensure members could continue to enjoy a safe and stress-free lifestyle. “Moving here is my gift to my children,” she says. “With everything going on, they don’t need to be worried about me – they can enjoy their own lives, knowing I have everything I could want or need.”
