DAREDEVIL FIGHT SCENE ANALYSIS

Format of Daredevil

• Daredevil is an alternative TV series, its alternative because its only released on Netflix. It is a crime/action genre because the main character fights crime and there are lots of fight scenes. • It started in April 2015 and currently has only had one series.

Narrative

• Each episode lasts between 50 minutes and 1 hour. • The narrative is linear but there are flashbacks to him as a child after his accident with his father. • The storyline is realist as there is nothing non-‐fiction but you could say that as he is being a superhero it could become anti-‐realist but the narrative includes a Russian gang and a lawyer suit. • The endings of each episode is left open to lead to the next one and keep the series story flowing, but occasionally the narrative for that episode is resolved. • In this clip the criminals have kidnapped a boy and Matt Murdock, main character, goes to a hallway filled with thugs to rescue the boy.

Technical Aspects – Camera Angles

• This whole scene is filmed as a long take. This makes all the motions that the main character is doing feel smoother and more skilled. • The angles of the shot change with the action like when the main character falls over the camera angle lowers an once he is back up its at a normal level. • The camera movements are very smooth when he kicks one of the men over the door, you can see the criminal standing up then as he gets kicked the camera spins around and faces the action with the hero.

Technical Aspects – Sound

• The audio is even more important in this clip because they amplify the sounds to make the audience feel more like the hero who is deaf and relies on his hearing more. • There is a low tone in the background but once he walks into the room the music gets faster and more upbeat. As the hero approaches the first room he listens closer and a muffle version of the room’s interior is apparent and you get a sense of how many people and how much danger he could be in.

Technical Aspects Lighting

• The lighting is very low key. This could be because they want you to focus more on the sound of the clip or it could be used to show the danger and the stereotypical criminal/villain hideout for hostages. • Even the office/living room that he walks into is poorly lit. Once the door is pushed off the hinges the hallway becomes slightly brighter but still has a ominous green/yellow lighting to it.
